The 24 Best Restaurants in Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec | Eater

"When the Senators played the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL playoffs, then-mayor Jim Watson bet a plate of Golden Palace egg rolls on his team (and won). It’s just one sign that Ottawa’s quintessential dish has got to be the egg rolls from this Chinese restaurant, which has been in business since 1960. A concoction of pork and veggies is stuffed into a golden-brown fried wrapper blackened at the tips, and it’s especially great dunked in hot mustard or delicious plum sauce. While the rest of the menu is just okay, people come from far and wide for these egg rolls." - Joel Balsam

Extremely disappointed and outrageous ripped off. The portion of the food was very small for the price. I still give 3 stars for the food because of egg rolls even though it was soggy when we got it still tastes good but overall experience was horrible. I place a takeout order and I was surprised how fast it was served. I understand how bad the inflation right now but the value for money in this restaurant was unbelievable. $41 worth of food. Chicken fried rice was bland and dry (probably left over) same with the chow mien that looks like just reheated in microwave.Just order EGG ROLLS only so you won’t be disappointed.

I was so shocked to open my containers from here especially from Golden Palace. They are always rated #1 but not too sure what happened today, I did takeout and got Soo Guy asked well done but as you will see in the picture, 1. Not a full container, 2. Slimy, 3. Not well done at all. I paid over $80 for rice, chicken balls, soo guy, beef and broccoli plus 4 egg rolls just too be very disappointed. I find they are going down hill but raised prices.

It pains me to write a negative review about a place that’s such an institution in the city but the meal I just ordered was terrible. Not accounting for lack of flavour.. the beef and broccoli wasn’t good, broccoli was soft and the beef was very tough. The spare ribs weren’t edible. I got the large portion and I think combined we ate 3. Tried every single one in the container but the meat couldn’t even be chewed. Last and least was the lemon chicken. I’m not sure what was going on with this dish. Lemon sauce was good but the dish was an absolute mess. We weren’t able to eat it. The pieces were so hard that we couldn’t chew them. Im not sure what the batter is made with but I’ve never experienced something less edible that was meant to be eaten. The chicken inside wasn’t good either and hard to find. We ordered the food delivery so I can’t comment on service or atmosphere. I hope one day the food is better but I’ll never know since I definitely won’t be back. It’s unfortunate though because the eggrolls were as good as always today.

A few people at my work place were talking about Golden Palace’s egg rolls and how they order them by the dozen for take out and, I comprehend why, then were delicious! I ordered a combo and my spouse ordered Cantonese chowmein and the portions were huge!! We brought more then half home to eat for lunch the fallowing day. I would recommend this place and will return. The old decor is rather nostalgic and the service was efficient and friendly: thank you.

Google
So this was a shame the general Tao chicken is breaded so the container is half dough the coating is a wet bread that falls off the chicken it done to make it seem bigger the order of chicken can't feed a family and is way over priced for rhe size what is wrong with them the egg roll way over cooked read the reviews b4 you est or order this is a scam look at pictures save your cash you gonna be sorry look at rating you take a fork full chicken and just get breading what the ....

Google
Ordered $200 worth of food and barely received enough to feed a family of 3. I’ve never seen chicken balls smooshed into the smallest possible container to the point where you try and take out one and an entire soggy ball comes out instead. Save your money and order from somewhere that will provide you will good quality food. Absolutely outrageous.

I no longer live in Ottawa so I can't speak for the rest of the menu. But I always stop by and pick up a huge order of egg rolls to freeze. They have the best egg rolls I've ever tasted.

Came here for Christmas Eve dinner after many years. The actual restaurant is like walking back into time. It’s quite cozy and quaint - typical old school Chinese restaurant. The servers all wear red jackets which is a nice touch actually! What we had: Egg rolls (of course) - they are bigger than your average egg roll. This place is famous for them after all. In my opinion they are good but nothing to rave about. Won ton soup - I didn’t try this but it was a hit with the fam General Tao chicken - I wanted to love it based on the atmosphere of this place but the best way to describe it is a chicken balls with a chilli Thai sauce over top. Cantonese chow mein - fantastic ! They use a different kind of noodle and not your usual skinny egg noodle. Almond soo guy - I was a fan - it was delicious. Chicken and black bean sauce - also quite good ! The portions are a little small compared to other Chinese restaurants we have been to. Also their drinking glasses are tiny. I generally drink a lot of water so as odd (and silly) of a complaint this is, I would have preferred a larger drinking glasses (or at least a jug of water for the table).

Yelp
I grew up on the Golden Palace and on two trips through Ottawa in the last several years I went back twice. I was more than disappointed the first time and gave it a second chance a few years later in case I'd been there on an off night. They used to serve gorgeous big shrimp: now they chop up the shrimp. Chopped shrimp! Who does that. The eggrolls used to be in a class by themselves crammed with fresh veggies and fried in a cylinder - as opposed to the pinched ends everywhere else. They still make the cylinders but instead of crispy vegetables it is filled with some inexplicable mushy substance I was not able to identify. Ground pork and somethings more...could it be pureed veggies? How the mighty have fallen.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer for 50 years. The food is dreadful now. Eggrolls went from the best in Ottawa to the worst. Do not eat here. I will never ever be back to G P. James C

Yelp
Disappointed. I have really good memories of my previous visits to this restaurant. The food was so-so. Decor was dated and bare. I had hi hopes going in and left underwhelmed.

Yelp

Yelp
My husband has been eating here since they opened in the 60s. Not much has changed and it is so refreshing to come back to town to visit family and find something that is the same. We've never tasted better egg rolls the world over and the garlic chicken balls are to die for. I hope they are here for the rest of our lives. You will have a flashback to A Christmas Story but is that a bad thing?

Yelp
In covid Canada one would think that the golden palace egg roll would have replaced the loonie as a unit of currency, however things have not gone well for the restaurant. For those unfamiliar, the egg rolls are sold at the ice hockey stadium and an absolute staple in Ottawa. Over a number of years I have watched diners sit in the 1970s original diner ordering plate after plate after plate. Amid The twee but genuine 1970s decor waiters reminded me of extras for Hong Kong movies of the era and I always imagined a sudden Bruce Lee style martial arts display erupting, but then that's my imagination. The reality is that the restaurant is now grimy, dirty and inaccessible - offering yet more real estate for the little old ladies who come in each morning to lay more golden egg rolls for the owner. It is sad that any covid government subsidy was not spent on renovation. In a sense the Golden Palace is 'last man standing' in terms of that era of dining - perhaps the owners missed a golden opportunity to recast themselves... Diners preorder if they can get through on the decrepit telephone are then trapped in a glass vestibule until handed a brown paper bag and credit card receipt. Getting in the car we found no cutlery - all they offered when pushed were a pair of chopsticks - try eating soup with those - great money saving idea for the owners. Perhaps my taste buds have changed over the past 2 years as well but sadly the magic has departed the palace - it now really does look old and has become more clearly than ever simply an asset being sweated to death. That said the egg rolls are still OK, but in the health and wellness mode we are in, quite probably more nutritionally dangerous then covid...

Yelp
Where's the love? Their burnt-end egg rolls are to die for. They were full of meat and with the duck sauce, it's perfection! It's a must try if you are in Ottawa!

Yelp
We've been driving to Ottawa for several years now (2hour drive) just to pick up their amazing famous egg rolls and let me just say they are by a huge Gap THE best egg rolls in NORTH AMERICA!!! The rolls according to their website have travelled around the globe to more countries than I have in my entire life ahaha!!! (No joke) People order them by truck loads uncooked just to bring it back home to cook it. The Rolls are huge and jam packed stuffed with A burst of flavour I challenge you to check out their website it's fun how they indicate all the places people have brought the egg Rolls back to their households. Since we live about 1:30 away we usually just bring home 2 dozens and freeze the first dozen and devour the first dozen as a feast. They are so delicious and sometimes we can't control them they are beyond delicious and so worth the drive. Overall, this place has been around for decades and they still to this day are the best egg roll makers , if only I knew their secret recipe ahaha I'm drooling just thinking about the next time I decide to take a drive to pick some up for dinner.

Yelp
I have been going ton this restaurant since the 70's. Décore is old but makes it interesting and brings back family diner souvenirs. The food is pricey but well worth it. It's always a treat to dine in. Server have always been great. Don't forget the egg roles as they are amazing. Always take a douzen for home after.

Yelp
Tonight Feb 3, 2024 got takeout 6 Egg Rolls Chicken Fried Rice Chicken Balls and Almond Guy Ding $66.70. Egg rolls were not crispy, tasteless like they were a week old. Chicken balls were a few pieces stick together in clumps of doughy batter, chicken was dry dry dry. Rice was okay, just okay. Other dish very average. It only had onion and celery and a few almonds. No mushrooms no broccoli. Very glutinous sauce with no flavour. Have dined in and had takeout dozens of times over decades. Tonight was NOT GOOD. Had we been eating in the restaurant I would have sent the food back. Not sure what has changed but I won't be in a hurry to go back. Food was ready 15 minutes from phone call, several bags were on the counter cooling when i walked in. Very disappointed. This used to be the best!

Yelp
I finally got to try their famous egg rolls that I've been hearing people rave about for years and years and yes, they are, without any doubt, the best egg rolls on the planet. It's like stepping back in time inside. The waiters are dressed in red tail jackets with black lapels and white shirts and the place looks like it probably did in the 50s or 60s. Apart from the egg rolls, I had a won ton soup that was very 'middle of the road' and my brother had a curried chicken dish that was good but didn't have a whole lot of chicken in it. Apart from their two dollar egg rolls, their prices are not cheap. When I got the bill, I thought they'd made a mistake but apparently not. Our waiter was very entertaining

Yelp
The burnt-tip egg rolls definitely live up to expectation! After hearing about their famous egg rolls, I decided to order from here for dinner. Overall, the meal was pretty great. I ordered the chicken egg rolls and they were delicious. Nice, big and filled up with chicken and filling, they were finished within seconds! It comes with a dipping sauce as well as hot mustard. The other dishes the really stood out were the hot pepper with beef and the general tao chicken. They were both really good. The beef dish was spicy, something I was really hoping for. As for the general Tao, it was nice and crispy, with minimal breading on the inside (another plus!). The only thing I would change is the sauce on the general tao. I found it very similar to a sweet chilli sauce. The other dishes such as the chicken chow mein and beef and brocoli were fine. I would've preferred having less sauce and more crispy noodles in the chow mein, and less sauce in the beef and brocoli dish. Also, I think both dishes could've used a bit more flavour. Overall, I really can't wait to come back for more of their egg rolls!

Yelp
I used to live in Ottawa, and one of the greatest things about them is their understated food scene. There are a ton of restaurants that don't try too hard and succeed on being great but not fussy. I like this. Segue: I am a huge fan of Ruby Inn Chinese Food on Walkley Rd. They, in my opinion, have the best egg rolls ever made, and all of their food is excellent. I've never gotten anything bad from them. But all I keep hearing about is this challenger called Golden Palace and how their egg rolls rival Ruby's. Well, you know what's next: while on a visit to see friends, I had to try these egg rolls. Let's get to the skinny: They're quite good, they're very tasty, they're excellent. And they're huge. They're the Fats Domino of egg rolls. These are a meal on their own. The flavor is a bit different than Ruby's. I taste more veggie than meat, and they're a little less contained than their opponent. But. They're not as good. This is my opinion of course, and there's not a chance in hell I'd say they're not good on any day of the week, but they're not as good as Ruby's. Other than that, the plum sauce is different, the egg roll itself is different, but no matter, they're still very good. I'll leave it at that. Service is efficient and friendly. We got a gentleman named Bat who served us. 21 egg rolls and they were on our table in 3 minutes, I kid you not. This guy and place mean business. Also got fried rice which was good. Tasted slightly burned which didn't deter me. It was still good. Only complaint, is the place is very expensive. Lemon chicken is about $22. I live in Toronto, this city is expensive, but I haven't ever encountered lemon chicken for that price. One of my friends who was at the egg roll fest got beans in a lo mein sauce and it was $12. Pricey. Anyhow, next time I'm in Ottawa I'd go back. This place knows how to throw down

Yelp
Today was my first, and last, order from Golden Palace. Simply put, it was the most disappointing chinese food I've ever eaten. While the chicken balls/general tao seemed to be hand-breaded (a nice change), they tasted stale and were hard to cut through. The sauces were watery (especially the beef in black bean sauce), and none of the dishes were terribly flavourful. Also, the portions were disappointingly small compared to other local offerings that are comparable in price. And the egg rolls? I guess they were good, but I can't say they were the best I've had and TBH I don't understand all the fuss. UPDATE: My wife is still ill from it more than 12 hours later.

Mike S.

Yelp
Ordered egg rolls, almond chicken guy ding and beef with broccoli for pick up. Egg rolls were fine BUT when we went through the plastic containers it was void of the main ingredients. Beef and Chicken. 5 tiny little pieces of meat in each dish. For 15.00 per dish I would expect more than soggy vegetables. Never again.

Violet S.

Yelp
The food is alright, lacking a lot of flavour. For example, the rice was very very dry, the sauce for the egg rolls was water downed and the batter for the chicken was soggy. All of it was SO pricy for the amount they actually gave you (chow mein was $12 for 90% bean sprouts... :/ ) The egg rolls are very good but only that is worth it. Go elsewhere for Chinese food that will give you large amounts of food for fair prices and lots of flavour.

William J.

Yelp
We had egg rolls from Golden Palace yesterday. I have been eating food from here for over 50 years. I have quit ordering any other dishes as the quality kept going down and the prices up. Yesterdays order will now be the last of the egg rolls as they were tasteless and gave stomach issues to both my husband and I. Its time to say goodbye to what once was a family favorite.

Yelp
I can't do anything but to laugh at this point. I understand during covid and especially it being Mother's Day things are hectic but how does a business charge 16$ for an each/item only to come in a small tub!? Had 6 people to feed and well ... you can see in the picture it was not enough ESPECIALLY FOR THE AMOUNT I PAID lol. Had egg rolls as well (not included in picture) and they're good I'll give them that/has it going for them but I've had many "Chinese" take outs from other places and they give so much more that it could last you a week! heck ..hole in the wall places give way more then this place. My mistake for wanting to try something new after hearing about good things (maybe it's better dining in?) Worse is I called to ask if this was normal and I quote "it's been like that for decades" ......................................lol get your moneys worth and go somewhere else! beside taste wise 3/10 tasted like smoke/cigarette smoke infused food. Never again .. no thanks!
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
Yeah. It's true about what they say about their egg rolls. They're incredible and a close second to the east coast egg roll (salty mushy goodness #yum)! But, I think that's what GP has going for it. They've surrounded their brand behind the egg rolls that they've forgotten to put much effort behind the rest of their menu. It's good Chinese food, but not great. If it weren't for the egg rolls, I probably would never go back. They need to focus on the rest of the menu since they've already perfected the egg roll. Once they do this, it might be the best Chinese restaurant in the city!
google avatar

Ginette P.

Yelp
This review is based solely on the amazing egg rolls that we travel long distances for. And the friendly service when we're there. It always seems relatively busy when we do pick up the egg rolls which I'm guessing speaks well for this venerable restaurant.
google avatar

Kayla W.

Yelp
My grandpa used to work here back in the day. This restaurant has a rich rich history to Ottawa. The decor and design of the restaurant is extraordinarily and feels like your in a movie with multiple rooms. The egg roles are a must!!!! My folks buy them in bulk and we eat them from home year round. The owner, staff are honest hardworking individuals and you can tell by the quality of the food. Wow best Chinese place in town hands down.

Yelp
I have enjoyed this place for my 37 years in Ottawa. While i love their food, certain reviews on other sites state that it's not "authentic" enough, that it's too greasy, or that it's too expensive, etc. In the end, I realize that all our opinions are subjective. But let the facts speak for themselves: (1) It's existed for a very long time. Is it because most people like it? I think that would be the only logical explanation. I do agree that certain fans might praise it so much that new visitors might feel disappointed or let down. But the fact that they remain in Ottawa after 40 plus years speaks volumes, does it not? (2) Golden Palace always busy. Is it because people like it? Again, logic dictates that they must. (3) Service is abrupt. Is this because they're busy? I think we see where this is going. The people who faithfully buy their food don't have big enough issues with this or the fact that the quality of English spoken by the staff might be hard to understand. Sure, they're abrupt. They certainly aren't rude enough to steer people away from them. (4) It's expensive. Yes, it is. Why would this be? Because it's well-liked by most people. And those people put a high value on the product at Golden Palace. If they didn't think Golden Palace's food was excellent, they wouldn't pay as much for it. It's not truly Chinese food. Most Chinese restaurants we have here in Ottawa do not serve "authentic" Chinese food either. I've never heard of "authentic chicken balls". But whatever its classified as (I think most would call it Canadian Chinese food), people enjoy it and have kept it open for 40+ years. Some former Senators have had their egg rolls flown in across Canada to relive the GP experience when they've been traded to other teams. So, at the expense of sounding like a follower and like many other GP fans, I love it too.

Yelp
I quite hate to do this, but I was SEVERELY disappointed in this place! Was so excited to finally eat here, but I really and truly was not at all impressed. Yes, the egg rolls they're famous for are just as good as they say - crispy, tasty, and, strangely enough, even tastier with their 'hot' mustard.. which was my first indication of the fact that they serve North American Chinese food. If you don't know what this means, then you've never had authentic Chinese food to begin with. Their lunch deals are not so much deals as they are stupid amounts of (not so fantastic food) for not so fantastic prices. They give you a small selection of about 3-4 specific dishes to choose from, which include chicken fried rice, almond guy ding, plain chop suey, and something else that did not even seem remotely appetizing at the time and I now cannot remember. Pretty sure there's also another option of garlic spare ribs, but, of course, it's extra. I found the dishes fairly bland, so I added some soy sauce, which I never do, but then accidentally drowned my lunch special. Though, to be honest, not much of a loss there. Don't even get me started on the chop suey - plain chop suey pretty much just equals bean sprouts. No, thanks. I have gotten into the habit of taking pictures of literally everything I eat, especially at restaurants and the like, and other than the egg rolls, no food porn pics for me from this place. No moo shu, no beef with black bean sauce, no flat rice noodles, generally no noodles at all, other than different chow meins. I paid something like $20-25 with tax and tip for a lunch I generally did not enjoy. I would have given it one star if it hadn't been for the egg rolls. My advice? Stick to the egg rolls and go elsewhere for some good Chinese food. 1/30 #30DaysOfYelp

Yelp
I came by here when my friend wanted me to try the best Chinese food in Ottawa and knows I'm picky with Chinese food. Just a heads up, it's not a traditional Chinese place, more of a Canadian-Chinese take out restaurant. This is not an authentic Chinese restaurant for you foodies. The food wasn't great from the items my friend ordered but I must admit the egg rolls weren't bad. Fortunately for me we didn't get terrible service. The place is a little dated and overpriced but if you like the old school Canadian-Chinese restaurants this place might be for you.

Yelp
Ordered Golden Palace last night for dinner egg rolls were good, but fried rice tasted burnt and their version of general Tao chicken basically chicken balls with chilli Thai sauce, very disappointing will not be ordering again

Yelp
Came for egg rolls and they were excellent. Other dishes were good, environment was dated but clean. Service was excellent - friendly and attentive.

Yelp
I really hate to give them three stars- I do. To be fair the food was pretty good. The egg rolls are literally the best we've ever had (as I'm sure you can see from many other reviews). We also had the garlic spare ribs and they were very delicious, as well as the general Tao which was ok but did not taste like any traditional general Tao we've had before. Kind of felt like the general Tao was glorified sweet and sour sauce over lightly breaded chicken... Over all the food was pretty good. And then there is the location..... The reason I can't personally give this place a better rating is because of the extreme lack of care the owner has placed on his restaurant. The place looks like has not been renovated since it opened like 50 years ago . . The filth of the walls- which are old faux wood paneling that you would see in a 60s basement, had scratches and wear and tear beyond belief. The light fixtures, falling apart. Dirty and filthy - aside from our table wear which was clean. The kitchen doors were completely filthy and scratched up and beat down with wear and tear. The curtains next to our table were literally- I'm not kidding you- shredded at the bottoms so badly they were falling apart. (Will post pic) The odd part is this restaurant is constantly busy which leads me to believe this owner has more than enough means to renovate and clean this place up a bit. No need to take away any of he classic old school vibe just pain and repair - clean it up. It's really bad how run down. The other thing we couldn't believe was the price our our meal. Two egg rolls each and one side dish each with two small rice and our meal came to $70! We didn't even take drinks at this price, just outrageous for the run down atmosphere. Again, we won't go back.

Yelp
I don't understand why I read such great reviews of this place. The only good thing for lunch today was the wonton soup. My water glass was chipped. Substitutions were allowed on the menu for combo meals but not by staff. The egg rolls they are so famous for were premade and reheated. The chicken fried rice was burnt. The sweet and sour chicken 'balls' were also premade and reheated. We also weren't ever advised as to what made the house chow mein special, and it turned out to be shellfish, which we can't eat. It's not mentioned on the menu, and we deliberately ordered items that shouldn't have had shellfish. The decor is incredibly dated and in need of a refresh, even if the ceiling is kept. The wait staff are pushy and not exactly accommodating or welcoming. We will not be back, and I can't even suggest the famous egg rolls!

David H.

Yelp
OMG, been a fan since forever but recently Golden Palace went waaay out of their way to support me. Best Chinese food, best customer service ever! Egg rolls are legendary. Lemon Chicken is mouth watering!!! Thanks Bill at GP for being son great to deal with!!! David from Waterdown ON.

Yelp
This anachronism has tacky stereotype decor unchanged since the 50s and now obviously shabby. It's what non-Chinese back then thought to be an authentic look. Now it's humorously retro, an artifact that can't be updated since that will destroy a key reason for continuing popularity. The menu is still the 50s cliches of egg rolls (it's widely known for them), fried rice, chow mein, spare ribs in sweet brown sauce, chicken chunks in sweet red sauce, etc. This is Chinese in the sense that Chef Boyardee is Italian. Eating at the GP, as locals call it, is to experience Chinese from the era when we were more or less clueless as to what that really meant. By all means go, because the food is okay for what it is, if pricey, but do it with a wink as a throwback experience, not as credible Chinese.

Yelp
The egg rolls...they are a staple in my diet. Have only tried the egg rolls. Only need to eat the egg rolls. The plum sauce has a hint of ginger which is amazing. Also...the sauce is considered a liquid at the airport so, if you are flying with them anywhere...make sure they are in containers that are 100mL or less!

Yelp
Met friends for lunch on Friday, May 26th, and this was the worst I have experienced. The atmosphere is a time warp with a phone at entrance desk ringing too loudly constantly to enjoy our visit. The portion for our dishes looked closer to half portions and the dishes were almost tasteless and mediocre. The Beef and Greens were sad pieces of beef overly smothered in bok choy - should have called it Beef and Bok Choy. Their special chow mein, a disappointment to me. Won ton soup okay. And expensive as well.

Pat S.

Yelp
Egg rolls are NOT THE SAME anymore, bought 6 this past sat May 18th, I could not eat half of one, tasted like pure pork instead of the pork an veg, vegies coarsely ground compared to normal 50 years and I am not going back, why? Because they will not acknowledge anything I say cheers !' Pat

Yelp
Went here recently with some friends to try out the famous Golden Palace eggrolls and I was not disappointed! While the the eggrolls were a bit pricy, it was totally worth it because they were crispy and stuffed with tons of meat. I thought that the customer service was great as well, and the employee that helped me checkout my takeout order was very kind and helpful (I think his name was Justin)! I'll definitely be coming back and recommend this place to my friends and family.

Yelp
Hands.Down. The best Chinese food restaurant ever. They are award-winning when it comes to their egg rolls. Although parking is limited it's so worth it.

Yelp
Am I the only one who was really, really disappointed? Yes, the egg rolls were good but they weren't great. The rice was dry and tasted burnt and the general tao was so aggressively spiced that I couldn't eat it. I can handle spice but after 2 bites, I couldn't do it anymore. If you plan on going with children or elderly folks, be mindful that things are SPICY! I asked if they had anything that wasn't spicy and the man at the counter laughed and said 'Yes. Rice.' I should have listened. My husband on the other hand... LOVED IT!

Yelp
I get that people love the egg rolls, as do I. However, the rest of the food is SO bloody expensive. While I believe that the dishes that I have tried are good, it is far from being great.

Yelp
Best egg rolls you will ever eat in your life!! Golden Palace egg rolls are close to the top of the list of things I miss most about my hometown. No trip back home is complete until I have eaten my weight in them. That being said, the food is the only reason to go. The restaurant's decor is very outdated, right down to the dishes. Parking is limited at busy times (and it's pretty much always busy). We usually just get it to go. I don't think anything about this restaurant has changed since I was a kid!

Yelp
I have often had their famous egg rolls, but today I decided to try more. Unfortunately, I was VERY disappointed! We ordered 3 dishes, which cost us over $50! The portions were extremely small, and the food was dried out and tasteless. The spare ribs we ordered were stripped down so much that there was barely any meat on them, and they were extremely tough. Every time I go in there the place is completely empty. I'm guessing that the general public has wised up on their terrible food, and only orders egg rolls to go... which is all I plan on doing with this place in the future. Also, the staff was extremely rude and unhelpful. Very disappointed, as I had such high hopes from their egg rolls.

Yelp
THE BEST EGG ROLLS ON EARTH! Golden Palace dishes out delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine with fast, friendly service. They make their egg rolls and plum sauce from scratch and you'll be amazed how delightful they are! You can take home half-cooked egg rolls to be served at home as well. The menu is like most Chinese-Canadian restaurants, but the quality is like no other I've tasted. How 'bout them egg rolls Mr. Goldstone?

Yelp
Golden Palace is a Chinese restaurant on Carling, and a popular one at that. Just looking at the building, you can tell the restaurant has been around for a while. It's not too run down, but it certainly shows its age. The biggest challenge with the restaurant is parking; on busy nights finding a spot isn't always easy since they have a very limited parking lot. Parking on a nearby street is your best bet. The inside is pretty big, with a fair sized waiting area and a good amount of tables. The decor is interesting. The atmosphere is obviously Asian, but there is a lot stuff packed in there. It doesn't take away from the tables, but it does look a bit cluttered. The food is good, darn good. That is why people come here constantly, and that is why they continue to stay busy. It's all the classic Chinese food you'd want. The bar, however, is a bit lacking. The physical bar itself is incredibly small and serves as a service bar. The drinks are limited, with domestic beer and basic liquor. Come here for the food, not the bells and whistles.

Yelp
Went to the Palace for lunch last week based on our memories of the egg rolls. The egg rolls are still wonderful, tasty, large, good etc.. The rest of the lunch was abysmal! Tasteless, lacking in everything! Ridiculous bill for what we had. Interior hasn't been updated ever. The whole thing was like this is a restaurant trying to quit the business!

Yelp
Very disappointed. The food was terrible -- very bad flavour and quality. We used to like the Golden Palace some years ago. What a disappointing change!

Yelp
Best Chinese food hands down, their egg rolls have no equal. That said, make sure you are going for the food. The decor of the restaurant is nice, but it's very old. They don't deliver. Limited parking spots for a place that is always busy.
