On the Grid : Golden Patty

"Look past the hole-in-the-wall exterior, and you'll find the best place to get a hot and fresh Jamaican patty cooked the right way, with a warm flaky crust and perfectly seasoned meat filling. A staple of the neighbourhood, Golden Patty (formerly Patty King) owns a soft spot in the hearts (and stomachs) of many native Torontonians. With a wide variety of patty flavours, you’ll be tempted to visit every time you roll through the neighbourhood. Besides patties, they have tasty rum fruit cake and ginger beer." - Charles Lim aka Ched

It's always Patty Time at Golden Patty. Such a great place to stop for a snack or meal. Pastries and baked good area amazing too. You will want to buy everything. Smells delightful in here. You can follow your nose to this place. Staff are so friendly. Cash only please.

Google
A must try spot! I was told to check it out and I did. Doesn’t look like much but the mild beef patty I had for $2.85 was unreal. Very tasty and great value, would recommend.

Google
I love beef patties so when I came across this place, I had to try them. I ordered a spicy beef patty and it was so good. The lady gave me a fresh one right from the oven. Reasonably priced too!

Abhay Santhosh Koduru

Google
Got spicy beef, jerk chicken, and curry goat patties. All of them taste good but very disappointed how thin the curry goat and jerk chicken patties are compared to spicy beef. They were half the size (by weight) but cost more. Would go back here but not for the chicken or goat patties.

Google
Follow @bredgyeats for more food videos! A golden patty shining under the glimmering sunlight, that serves as the perfect snack on the go. The buttery pastry flakes and crisps with ease, shedding its numerous flavourful layers into your mouth. It's contrasted with a smooth minced beef filling, adding a savory umami with its distinct spiciness and Jamaican-style spices.

Google
I do not even like beef patties that much, but this place had me completely rethinking that. I took one bite and instantly wanted more. The crust was light and flaky with just the right amount of crisp. The beef inside was moist, perfectly seasoned, and layered in a way that made every bite feel rich and satisfying. It was the kind of flavor that lingers in your mind long after you are done eating. What really surprised me was how affordable everything was. The quality you get for the price is almost unbelievable. I am already planning to go back, and this time I have to try their doubles. If they are anything like the patties, I know I am in for something amazing.

Google
Great place for Jamaican patties! They’re pretty good, pretty solid. It’s nice and flaky, filling could be a little more flavourful but still good. I’ve seen a lot of reviews about this place and was excited to try it. It’s a really great snack for a great price of $2.49. Although if you spend below $4, you are charged $0.50 extra if you pay by card (credit or debit). The spicy beef isn’t spicy, so get the spicy over mild for more flavour.

Google
Golden Patty I’m not gonna lie I’m very bias towards this place. It feels like nostalgia every time I go and it’s always a treat to be back. The location in Kingston is a trademark of the culture! Little shops in every nook and cranny, dirty but in the most beautiful way, messy but organized chaos. How I think beautiful brains and personalities look like. Good pricing good service and amazing flaky Jamaican Pattie’s! Lots of variety of fillings but I went with the classic: Spicy Beef: 9.5/10 always my favourite Jerk chicken: 7.8/10 bit dry but was hitting the spot Vegetable: 7/10 just not my cup of tea and that’s okay

Yelp
Loved the flavor of the filling! (Jerk chicken patty). Quick food take out spot for various flavours of Jamaican patties. Was here around lunch hours, this place was packed! The crust was thinner with layers. Flaky but not overly flaky - absorbing moisture of the filling to a perfect level, yet leaving a good texture. No unpleasant dry crunchiness. Liked it! I wished there were more filling! But the small amount of filling may be the reason of their popularity- it hits the good balance with their thinner crust. Cannot wait for trying other flavors!

Yelp
Great spot in Kensington market to get a beef patty. I ordered a mild beef patty and there wasn't too much spice but I did enjoy it. They had several other patties and pastries to choose from too. I'd go back here if I was in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I really wanted to give this place a higher review because it's such a staple in Kensington with very affordable prices. Most patties are $2.60 with many cake and bread options as well. However, the patty we had was not great. The crust felt old and dry, the flavour inside was not there. It reminded me any frozen patty that's been heated up at a gas station. Still an affordable option, but there are some other patty spots that are $5 and much more enjoyable. Service was efficient and friendly.

Yelp
I came to Golden Patty on a food tour in Toronto. We were each given a Jamaican beef patty. It was cooked fresh and hot out of the oven. They are so good. We didn't sit inside. We were served one patty as we stood outside. Great service!
google avatar

Yelp
Patties are good but can use more filling we got the shrimp, ackee and saltfish as well as the doubles patty and the shrimp had the best flavor but the doubles had the most stuffing. I would say that they were fresh and for the price it was worth it.
google avatar

Nolan F.

Yelp
I asked the employee for a rec so I tried a goat curry patty. Pastry was crispy but could use salt. Goat curry was tender and flavorful but very small on portion. It's the perfect cheap snack as you're exploring Kensington Market.

Yelp
It was on my to-do list to try a Jamaican beef patty, and I am so happy that I chose this restaurant from the long list of options in Toronto! I have no idea what ingredients go into this dish, but the the pastry was flaky & the beef was a flavorful bite. There was the perfect amount of meat without being too spicy. And really you just can't beat the price. We bought one to enjoy while we strolled through Kensington Market on a Sunday, when the streets are closed to cars.
google avatar

Yelp
I would love to give this place more stars because I really enjoyed the jerk chicken patty I purchased, but the counter person was not friendly or welcoming like EVERYWHERE ELSE IN TORONTO!! It was like being back at home. BB

Yelp
WHAT I ATE - CANADA @ Golden Patty Kensington Market, Toronto, Canada https://www.youtube.com/@whatiate2000 We came to Toronto's Kensington Market looking for Jamaican style Oxtail. Before we had dinner. we strolled along the quaint, bohemian neighborhood. The crowd here was a mix of soccermoms pushing strollers while trying to relive their carefree university years in a place where old hippies go to fade away in the care of government social programs. With the air filled with the sounds of raggae and the scent of exotic smoke, we found Golden Patty! This bake shop has a number of Jamaican bakery favorites and hot food items, but we zeroed in on their fragrant and flaky Jamaican beef patties! They made a nice street snack before having dinner a little later. We were amazed at the flaky, fragrant crust. Though the filling was not so spicy, it was still tasty and a good amount. Golden Patty will be on our list to visit the next time we are in Toronto. VIDEO LINK: https://youtu.be/5WQNUXDbyn0

Yelp
I probably should have ordered just the beef patty but decided to try their goat patty with coco bread. I love Jamaican beef patties. When I came in on a Monday in the afternoon there was a short line and it moved fast. 2 ladies behind the counter were taking orders. I liked the flavor of the goat. However there wasn't much filling. The pastry itself was just ok. The coco bread added nothing else except unnecessary carbs. Eaten together with the patty it tasted a bit dry. The coco bread was toasted. After a few bites, I just ate the patty by itself. Wish I could feed the birds with the coco bread but ended up tossing it in the trash.

Yelp
When you need a bite of warmth, Jamaican patty is just the thing! One spot to find it is Golden Patty, nestled in Kensington Market, in the vibrant multicultural heart of the city. This is where you can find patties for about $2 each, and a little more if you want it wrapped in coco bread. I enjoyed the flakey Curry Goat patty in coco bread, along with a Spicy Beef patty. For about $5, this made for a quick yummy meal reminiscent of my childhood in Toronto. This is the spot that Simu Liu showcased as one of the "Worth It" spots in the city. You can also try other Jamaican bakery goods here as well as chicken roti and jerk meat with rice for a more fulsome West Indian experience.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at the Jamaican patty store in Kensington Market. It was a great hidden gem and a favorite amongst the locals. This place was highly recommended by my friend Jennifer P. It was also nice to see this place offers vegetarian options, giving a variety of choices for different preferences. We ordered the Vegetable Patty, Chickpea Patty, and the Curry Shrimp Patty. The vegetable patty had a subtle spiciness which we found quite exciting. The curried shrimp patty was also another favorite but we did wish they offered a bit more shrimp filling inside. Both of them were so savory, we were very impressed! The chickpea patty was our least favorite as it was underwhelming in flavor and surprisingly, texture. It was just okay. The efficiency and friendliness of the staff is definitely a plus. They accept both debit/charge cards and cash, with a preference for the latter. We went to a nearby coffee shop as a workaround for the lack of seating in the store. This way we were able to savor the delicious snacks and enjoy a warm beverage to wash it down. Should I find us back in Kensington Market, this place is definitely on our list to revisit! Service: 5/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 Food: 5/5

Yelp
A good place for a quick snack in Kensington Market. Unfortunately I already just finished lunch when I came here but it smelled so good I had to go and grab one anyways. Service is really quick as all the patties were pre-made but they were still warm. I ordered the spicy beef and it really wasn't spicy at all, but it was okay if I thought of it as a regular beef patty. I also wished there was more filling, it did feel a little pastry heavy but I guess for the price I can't really complain. Perhaps a double would have been better. I'd love to come back to try their other selections next time on a more empty stomach.

Yelp
Not much I can say that is new about this already iconic spot in Kensington. The patties are always great, probably my favorite in the city and my favorite offerings of this place, particularly the spicy beef. The oxtail and jerk chicken are very flavorful also, but I'd probably opt for rice options over the roti. The service is quick, and prices absolutely reasonable (check them out on ToGoodToGo also!).

Yelp
It's the pastry that separates a good patty from a bad one. For me that's what makes the difference and these were excellent.
google avatar

Taz M.

Yelp
Got a box of ackee n saltfish patties for $26 and got a standard spicy beef patty for $3 and one other patty which could be jerk patty... The spicy beef and jerk patty were alright, though, the filling ratio vs crust and such is not even. The ackee n saltfish was same issue and it was more salty than anything. For the price point, it wasn't very good overall.

Yelp
Saw this spot on tiktok and decided to stop by during our trip to Toronto to try their filled patties. We got the mild and spicy beef patties, which were warm and flaky. Overall a really yummy treat and super affordable (only a couple US bucks)! I definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the Kensington market area for a treat. It is a small bakery, so there is no seating. Their patties are easy to eat on the go though.

Yelp
I learned of Golden Patty from a YouTube video and found out it has a pretty large following in Toronto. Finally got to try it while I was in town for a cheap yet hearty quick lunch. Kensington Market, where it's located, is not my favorite area in TO as it can get pretty chaotic and intimidating especially for a tourist like me. Still, Golden Patty was worth the visit. I got two Jamaican patties-spicy beef and jerk pork. I also added "coco bread" to the former thinking it's a sweeter bread of some sort but it turned out to be another bun that would hold the patty. I thought doubling up the carb was unnecessary but its crunchy exterior and soft insides grew in me after a few bites. The Jamaican patties were amazing as I've expected. Flaky puff pastry and flavorful filling. I love the spicy beef more than the jerk pork but both were good. They do take cards here so no need to bring cash. Next time I want to try upgrading my patty to a whole sandwich where you can add veggies and cheese, as per their menu. DEFINITELY A BANG FOR YOUR BUCK!

Yelp
On our recent trip to Toronto, my Staten Island raised wife was on a quest to find the best Jamaican beef patty. The winner (by a sizable margin) was Golden Patty. The entire establishment screams authentic and homemade, with many of the customers coming from the local community. Both the spicy beef and the jerk chicken varieties were fantastic with well seasoned meat and flakey crusts, and the kids enjoyed the mild beef ones, as well.

Yelp
While walking through Kensington Market I saw this spot on the corner and decided to try it out. This location is small but there was a line so it was a good thing. I decided to try the spicy beef Pattie's and they were amazing. I wish I would've tried the pork Pattie's ( I normally dnt see pork Pattie's). Inside was small, there wasn't any sitting room so it's more of a pick up your order and go type of place. The Pattie's are actually worth it. My friend had the mild ones and she enjoyed them also. I felt my Pattie's had a good amount of spice and I would get some More if I was in the neighborhood again.

Yelp
Tucked away in Kensington market and a long standing store in the area. They offer patties and sandwiches. Other products they offer include baked goods, cookies cakes, bread, and pastry. I got the cassava cake, it wasn't too sweet, but I found the baked golden brown areas to be hard. The service is quick and staff are friendly. The bakery inside is not decorated, a true market feel in there, you get your goods and leave. Not a place to linger to look at other things. I'm sure this is a good place since it has lasted a long time in the Kensington market area.
google avatar

Yelp
Super tasty and affordable beef patties!! Tried the spicy beef and jerk chicken and they were both so good. They came out piping hot and it was such a good snack to munch on while walking around the Kensington Market area. Will def stop by again the next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Geraldine G.

Yelp
This place is what one would call a neighborhood gem . It's a small space inside so with space and capacity limits it's common to wait outside but even before Covid this place always has customers. Whether it's Delicious Patties, baked goods or dishes to go like oxtail or curry goat. Definitely, not a place to eat inside. After all this time I'm surprised I haven't done a review! I usually go there for a patty and their version of a corn bread loaf. Whenever I'm in the area I try to grab one. They have a lot of bread options but this one remains my favourite.
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
Got a mild beef patty to share with my daughter. Ewwwwwww is all I can say. We get boxed Tin Neal's patties from the grocery store that are 10000x better. A patty from a convenience store is remarkably better. When I think of a beef patty, I expect a flaky crust. This was disgusting-- an abomination. The doubles, on the other hand, were passable. But I just can't get over the patty. Ugh. 2 stars.
google avatar

Terry C.

Yelp
The value for money is good. However, you need the quality and taste to go along with that. Had the jerk chicken dinner. Great price - $7.99 and you get the chicken, rice (I had rice and peas), cold slaw, and a piece of lettuce and tomato. The serving portion was good. The chicken was not bad tasting but not exactly jerk chicken. While it did have some spice to it, it wasn't jerk chicken flavour. It tasted like it even had hoisin sauce in the seasoning. Just making chicken spicy doesn't make it jerk chicken. The rice and peas was horrible. It was just rice with beans thrown in. No seasoning. The cold slaw was also lacking. I also had a patty. Not enjoyable. It came in a Patty King bag, so I'm assuming it is that brand. It was no better than buying it from your supermarket frozen patties.

Yelp
Had to stop here after seeing it featured on "Worth It". Ordered a spicy beef patty and a double. I prefer doubles made with roti, and the flavor fell a little bit short for me. The spicy beef patty however, OMG so good and comforting. If you're strolling through Kensington Market and need a snack, this place is definitely worth trying out. Especially for the price! There's no seating inside so prepare to stand outside or do some multitasking of walking and eating. Def worth trying and hope they get some good business after being featured on Worth It!

Yelp
I buy the beef patty every time when I pass by Kensington Market. It's yummy and cheap Jamaican snack! :)

Yelp
i heart golden patty!! yummy patties love getting a dozen. their toogoodtogo deals are always a steal as well.

Yelp
Sure, patties are a cheap snack when you're in Toronto but that weird goo almost all of them are filled with does tend to suppress the appetite if you think too hard about it (which factors into their being cheap). Never fear - Golden Patty makes patties that are higher quality than your average patty. The range of patties here is wider than what you get virtually everywhere else. Besides the classic beef (spicy/mild) there's also vegetable, chicken, callaloo (Spinach), curry goat, ackee & saltfish, curry shrimp & jerk pork/chicken The curry shrimp patty is pretty small - smaller than the others. It was OK, with a sharp taste The jerk pork was decent tasting: not too spicy and actually had quite a lot of recognisable bits of meat inside (wow!). Ackee & saltfish had a nice mix of flavours - salted cod and fruit. Curry goat was decent and had discernable bits of meat inside The Ginger beer was rather dilute, with a hint of spiciness The patties get even better if you warm them in a real oven (their warmer is paltry) - you get to really appreciate the slightly flaky crust

Nicole W.

Yelp
Pretty good food for an adequate price. Good if you in the area and are looking a for a quick snack.
google avatar

Corey W.

Yelp
Outstanding value. Really tasty beef patty. We got a spicy and a mild, both were outstanding. The spicy definitely had the better flavor and just enough kick. The coco bread was wonderful too. Slightly sweet with great cloud texture.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by because I saw a line up so I thought it must be good! Got a classic beef patty. I thought they make them inhouse but they buy it wholesale from Patty King in Scarborough...says on the paper bag it's wrapped in (I'm from Scarborough so I could've saved myself the trip!). Not the healthiest snack with all the shortening, colouring and MSG, but it brings back nostalgia, reminiscent of my high school days. The jerk chicken rice my boyfriend got was bland. Plain white rice with no beans or sauce and the chicken was dry too :(
google avatar

Brittany A.

Yelp
Stopped in while wandering the market with my hubby. We each ordered a patty. Bae chose the chicken curry option and I went with the spinach kind. This shop also sells various bread items and a few other foodstuffs. The patty was delicious. The pastry was super flaky yet thin and the spinach filling inside was so yummy. Babe said he really enjoyed his patty as well. Make sure you ask which patties they make home made and try those flavors first, so good. Great place to stop in for a quick snack!

Yelp
Chill place. quick. beef patty was amazing. Literally a requirement in life to try one

Yelp
Saw a long line of people waiting to get in and caught my attention. This place did not disappoint. The patties were delicious! Flaky and crunchy exterior and amazing flavor in the fillings. I tried the mild beef and the curry shrimp one. Both were very good, but my favorite was the curry shrimp one. It came with few pieces of small shrimp and the sauce was really good.
google avatar

Yelp
This place sell the best patty in town. I like the spicy beef patty and vegetables patty. Haven't visit since pandemic and today craving for good patty, still long line up because only 2 customers at a time. Worth to wait, and I also try their curry goat roti, so good, taste just right and texture right! Very impressed! Recommend!! $$

Yelp
I'm a Trinidadian and my most recent trip to my home country I ate my body weight in doubles. What is doubles to the ones who don't know? It is a flour based dough fried and stuffed with a curried chickpea base with pepper sauce. When I left Trinidad and went back to California it was sad knowing that I couldn't go to the savanna or the avenues to pick up a double or five to enjoy whether it was 1 in the afternoon or 2 in the morning. I tried making them, they came out ok, but there seemed to be something lacking. When my boyfriend and I were freezing over in the Kensington market area, I saw very small a little sign stating "doubles". Can it be? IT WAS! I walked in and took a look at the menu, in not sure if it was the -15 degree weather or the shear happiness from seeing the doubles but I was stuck in place. I was so excited! We were actually on our way to grab some lunch so I only ordered one. While I was waiting I noticed that they offered plenty of island flavor food, meat pie, jerk chicken, roti and many more. Of course within seconds my double was handed to me so I bundled up and took it to go. The slight heat was perfect with the insane cold weather! I loved it and it was a wonderful snack that took me back to the maracas beach even though I was freezing.

Protorontonian C.

Yelp
I found it really bland & lacked filling. The veggie patty lacked taste & filling. And where's the veggie protein? They should put some tofu or chickpeas/beans. I felt like I was just eating crust. & it wasn't even buttery crust. The beef pattie lacked filling 2. I remember the good 'Ole days when everywhere where I bought a pattie, it was gushing with juicy meat & gravy & no transfats.
google avatar

Prasiddha H.

Yelp
When in Kensington Market, I saw quite a line here of lots of people getting stuff from here. Thought I might as well try this place out. I have had Jamaican food, but never tried West Indian food, and definitely not a patty. I ended up getting in line and ordering the Curry shrimp, Chicken and Beef patties. These were pretty delicious and when heated up in the air fryer went well with coffee and tea! Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Kristen P.

Yelp
If you're hungry and want something inexpensive to fill your stomach, this is one place I would recommend. You can order a beef patty regular or spicy, and with or without coco bread. I've only had it spicy, but both with and without coco bread and I prefer it with coco bread. The spicy beef patty may not seem too spicy at first, but towards the end it can get quite spicy. The coco bread evens out the spiciness with its sweetness. There's nowhere to sit inside, but you probably won't need to sit for this meal. It's quick to eat and plus you should walk around Kensington Market instead :)

Yelp
My review is strictly for the patties and their hardo bread loaves. I was walking by in Kensington Market and saw some patties in a window. THEY HAVE ACKEE AND SALTFISH PATTIES!!! I ran in and grabbed one of those along with a callaloo patty. They were HOT. They were FLAKY. They were like $2 US or less! It was beyond satisfying. On my last day in town, I came back and got another A&S patty, got my parents a sample of their cakes (Mango butter cake, sweet potato pudding cake, bread pudding cake, cassava), and a loaf of 9-grain hardo bread. Out of the cakes, the sweet potato one was the BEST. And that bread was phenomenal. What a gem this place is.

Yelp
Delicious beef patty, not dry at all and flavour is perfect. So many variety of different flavour patties

Yelp
I'm an American who was visiting Toronto for a few days and I just happened to pass by here while walking around the area trying to find something to eat. My family is Jamaican, so I miss Jamaican food all the time. When I saw the logo I was excited! I wish I could have this place back home in america. The prices are SO reasonable, it felt like I was back home. I love patties in coco bread. I got a coco bread sandwich (a patty in coco bread with lettuce and tomatoes) which used to be my favorite lunch special while I lived in Jamaican. The sandwich taste exactly like home EXCEPT there was too much mayonnaise. That was my only complaint. I loved seeing all of the pastries in the cabinet, they smelled so good. Also they had fresh loaves of bread (hardo bread) just piled up and if my suitcase wasn't already full I would have bought a few. This bakery is a Caribbean mix, patties and coco bread for Jamaicans and doubles for the Trinidadians. If you have a chance I recommend visiting!
google avatar

Yelp
My favourite Jamaican Patty place. I would change this review if my favourite changes. Will get it approved by my Jamaican friend soon (if not, I'll modify or take down this review). The dough had the perfect amount of crumble and it was thin enough to enjoy the filling inside. I've tried their beef, goat, and shrimp. They were all amazing. Shrimp had this curry taste with some fishy-ness to it but I could taste the seafood paste/curry. So it might not be your thing if you don't like anything that's slightly fishy. The price is pretty good for what you get and the service was smooth and nice as well.

Sanford H.

Yelp
Great Jamaican patties. They sell frozen patties as well. First time trying will definitely be back for quick bite.

Yelp
My first time here but da hubs has been here a few times. We made a quick order of cocobread with meat patty, double, and a pop all for $6. Double was super flavorful with curry and good portion of chickpeas to bread. Meat patty was a little dry through the first couple bites until we got to the meat, but then the meat is so good it was worth it. Great deal. Delicious food!! Cool little shop. Ate outside while we took in more of the Kensington vibes. Definitely will come again next time I visit Toronto.

Yelp
Pretty good! It looks like a hole in the wall in Kensington market but the service is fast and the food is good. I only tried the coca bread and the chicken patty which were both great. The bread was soft and warm. The chicken patty had great flavor with just the right amount of spice. I would recommend...

Yelp
When one is in Kensington market, one must do a food run. Golden Patty made it on our food run list today. We tried the saltfish patty and curry shrimp patty. They are definitely a twist from the original beef patty. The saltfish patty has mashed fish in it, every bite is fishy goodness. The curry shrimp while taste is good, it is a bit difficult to eat because all the shrimp sink to the bottom of the patty. So you don't get any shrimp until the last few bites. The store also sells different types of breads. They also have curry goat, jerk chicken, ox tail for lunches. The owner speaks Chinese and is really friendly. He told us the patty we got were super fresh right from the oven and told us to be careful eating it. We sat on the little bench in the store and munch down our two patties. Satisfied. Now...on with our food run....

Yelp
Great beef patties in Kensington Market. Their sweet potato pie bar things are good too.
