Yelp
My cousin who I used to work with moved to the east coast and just recently came back to the islands for a visit. She wanted to get together with another colleague and when asked what she was craving for, ramen was mentioned. Suggested to them Golden Pork Tonkotsu Ramen Bar (GP) which they both agreed. This is a biz that's been on my radar for quite some time now.
Located on S King Street, not too far from Keeaumoku with neighbors of popular Sushi Que, GP has been in business for over 10 years offering the milky white, deep and rich pork bone broth ramen that hails from Fukuoka. Dang! Cannot believe I waited so long to try this joint out. I guess because I'm a creature of habit and tend to patronize a rotation of restaurants that's family approved.
I was advised there's a small private lot behind and with my lucky stars, a car was just about to pull out as I entered. It was a little challenging waiting for the car to exit and then have me back into the stall.
We arrived shortly before 630pm, and a table was just about to leave so our wait time was minimal before we were seated. There's a waiting list at the hostess stand where we witnessed groups of people had their names added as they arrived.
While checking out their limited menu, I saw their HH specials that's from 5pm - 630pm. I looked at my phone and it was now 627pm. The Chinese in me wanted to take advantage of the specials after quickly discussing with dining mates, we flagged down one of the staff and put in our HH orders. Our ramen was ordered after and we used the waiting time catching up with each other. Once the food arrived, we snapped some photos, and it was finally time to dig in.
THE VERDICT:
Overall, I found the food pretty good. The HH specials were delicious, made to order and a great deal. Loved the gyoza - ordered 2 and they came separately with a waiting gap in between. Worked out well as it was eaten hot and fresh without having it get cold on our table. The karaage was juicy and flavorful. Served with Japanese mayo, shredded cabbage and lemon wedge. The spicy cucumber was surprisingly delicious. It had a great crunch, and the crispy garlic chili oil served on top was divine. These sides are highly recommended.
We all order bowls of ramen and we each ordered different ones. I opted for the Spicy Red Miso Dragon with egg. The broth was delicious and although I went with mild, the lowest of the 3 spice levels, it was a kick that woke up my palate. It was indeed spicy but manageable to my palate. The egg was executed perfectly - - jammy yolk that I enjoy a lot. We all asked for thicker noodles for a $2 surcharge, as recommended by my colleague who has been to GP before. It had great texture and crew. I kinda thought the noodle portion was on the smaller size but my colleague mentioned to can add extra noodles for another surcharge.
Service was above average. Staff came to our table periodically to check up on us and even refilled our water pitcher and brought containers for our HH leftovers. We didn't stay that long but noticed the restaurant is quite lively with many conversations going on for a lively atmosphere.
Overall, a great first experience and looking forward to a repeat visit. Next time I'd like to try their popular Golden Pork Classic and sample other offerings in their HH menu.
