Best Restaurants Off I-80 Between San Francisco, Sacramento, and Lake Tahoe | Eater SF

"A former Tahoe burrito maker went west to settle down in Truckee, where he established this temple to one of San Francisco’s favorite portable dishes. A favorite of snowboarders and skiers headed to the mountain, the dishes here are enormous, and the prices — like a tri-tip sandwich for under $10 — are unbeatable." - Dianne de Guzman

Quaint, casual Mexican eatery located next to the DMV office in downtown Truckee. The rotisserie chicken was tasty, but the tri-tip was a bit bland without the hot sauce. Beware, the hot sauce has a serious kick to it! Fast and friendly service. Large free parking lot shared with other local businesses. Good place for a quick bite.

The food was good and portions were large for the price. The food came out sooner than expected 👍🏼 The beans could be better, it tasted as if it came from the can and not authentic.

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Golden Rotisserie absolutely blew us away! We came in as a hungry family of four and they did not let us down one bit. The whole chicken was cooked to perfection, tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The sides were just as impressive, the rice was spot on and the potato salad was out of this world, probably one of the best we’ve ever had. We also tried the tri tip, a sandwich, and the quesadilla de al pastor, and every single bite was delicious. You can tell they put real care into everything they make. On top of the amazing food, the people working there were super nice and welcoming, which made the experience even better. If you’re in Truckee and craving hearty, flavorful food that hits the spot, you’ve got to stop by Golden Rotisserie. We left full, happy, and already talking about when we’ll come back.

Google
Not sure what the hype is about or if we just happened to come on a bad day, but the food was atrociously bad. Burrito had zero sauce in it, Tri-tip was very dry and over cooked, and the burrito looked like it would be something off a kids menu. The other plate was a platter full of the same tasteless dried out Tri-tip and the most dry chicken I have ever eaten in my life. Nothing had flavor, except the medium salsa we got with our chips, that was all liquid. Not sure if thats their style, but it was basically just watered down hot sauce. Really odd, it certainly wasn't salsa. The Mexican rice was cold and bland on both plates. Tasted old and left out all day. $50 + %20 tip and neither of us finished our food. Horrible experience, there were at least 6 people working and not a single one of them looked like they cared about anything. I get its hard to hire up here, but if you have 6 people working, odds are at least one should know what they're doing. If you like dry meat, no sauce on your food and zero customer service, this is your spot.

Google
Average. The burrito was okay, great salsa. Biggest issue was how much beans there was compared to meat. Not bad, but there are better options.

Google
I don’t understand the good reviews. It’s quick and cheap, but the food is not even good. My wife got two tacos, meat and tortillas were decent, but that’s all there was to the taco. No onion, no salsa, no cheese… I mean these aren’t even street tacos. I was excited to try the chile relleno stuffed burrito… but it was pretty bad. Maybe the normal burrito would have been better, though I kinda doubt it. The chile relleno itself was okay, but it was the burrito outside some sad rice, beans and maybe I got pork, but didn’t see much of it. Anyways, not worth returning. Too many good restaurants in Truckee.

Google
Food is pretty darn good. Staff seem put out, especially anytime within 30-45 minutes close to closing. Expect chairs on tables and feeling rushed out.

Google
This may be insignificant, but it's a matter of principle. The last bullet point for a Family Pack is "Salsa". I was refused salsa because I didn't order tortillas. The second bullet point says "Tortillas or Garlic Bread". I was told that salsa did not come with garlic bread, which I ordered. Clearly, the menu needs to be updated to reflect policy. However, the cleck was indignant.

Yelp
I would have never guessed that Golden Rotisserie is such an awesome Mexican restaurant for a quick, inexpensive, and tasty food, located right on Donner Pass Road in Truckee! And it's probably the only Mexican restaurant that serves tasty and delicious tri tip tacos! The service is awesome. The line is long but the server got it under control to get everyone ordered fast. The place is friendly and warm, even though it's super cold outside. Food arrived quickly and tasty. The ambiance is fun, cool, and simple. I like the decor on the wall. I will return and you must stop by too!

Yelp
It's always so hot inside the restaurant. We did take out for Music in the park. Service was fast and the order was ready in minutes. The chicken tostada was delicious. Chicken was juicy and plentiful.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Quarter Chicken, Rice Only - No beans for the safety of others. Wow, this was good and you can't beat the value. My dish was only $8.50. It also comes with tortilla or garlic bread, but the rice was enough carbs for me so I declined. Chicken Golden Burrito - Wow, this was also surprisingly good as we ordered exactly how it is recommended, beans and all, lol. I was worried that it was too small, but as light eaters, it was more than enough food. The flavors worked very well together. Small menu done well. Decent soda drink selection, see picture. Fountain drinks are also available. We chose healthy self-service water from their soda fountain. Atmosphere - Small local business. Open kitchen, see picture of rotisserie oven. Indoor seating, a few tables. Counter seating is also available, see picture. Cool decor, see pictures. Clean organized single unisex restroom. Small mall parking for so many businesses, but we were lucky enough to get a space in front of the business. Service - Good, friendly, and amazingly quick service. By the time I paid, our lunch was pretty much ready. I did take extra long at the register as I was confused on what we wanted for lunch... Sorry. Price - $22, inexpensive for what we got. Owner Suggestion - Congrats on your 11+ years of success.

Yelp
It's just okay. Got the rotisserie chicken burrito. It was really expensive for just a regular burrito for a pretty small size, felt skimpy. You also only get 1 salsa for your burrito, you have to pay extra if you want more. Nickle and dime you for everything. \

Mary B.

Yelp
Great food and service. Good value. I like that they have the traditional Mexican sides and also other great options. I was just confused by their green salsa; it was extremely runny and slightly sweet.
google avatar

Gabriela E.

Yelp
We got a burrito that was good for a quick bite on the way home from Tahoe. Quick spot that's convenient for a road trip. The salsa wasn't very good but the chicken is great in the burrito.

Yelp
Picked up food here during our weekend trip. Located at a small shopping plaza. Plenty of parking. It was busy when we went in but the service was very nice and helpful. We ordered a relleno burrito and 2 carne asada tacos. The tacos were fine, pretty average. Wish it had more flavor/additions like onions or cilantro. The burrito was also really average. I didn't like their hot sauce, it was weirdly sweet? Pretty pricey for what we ordered, came out to around $28.
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
Bottom line: amazing meat. You can see everything--tri tip, pork, chickens--cooking away on the rotisserie. No question about what you're eating. Nice guys, even better food.

Yelp
IMO this is the Best Mexican Food in Truckee, potentially all of Tahoe region? 2nd time coming here (last time was about two years ago when we last visited truckee) and this time it was even better!! Everyone is nice and friendly. Ordered for the family: Tri-Tip Burrito Chicken Quesadilla & Tri-Tip Torta The quesadilla & Torta was my personal fav. The burrito id come back for as well any day. Hope this helps.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
Chicken and other offerings good. Prices fine. Service fine. It's more of a takeout. Worth trying.
google avatar

Nathan N.

Yelp
Some decent tri-tip and chicken options, such as plates and burritos. Was filling as it expected with Mexican food, but obviously a far cry from the usual fare found in SoCal and the Southwest. Nice affordable meal in Truckee though.

Lisa H.

Yelp
Ordered las trip end of April. Read good reviews about it BUT to me it was not good! WHO are the people rating this place! Ordered 1/4 quarter chicken plate which looked disgusting when I got it! yuck
google avatar

Tommy J.

Yelp
Today was awesome. These burritos were really spot on. For the price, This is one of the least expensive places to eat in Truckee. But even though it's cheap, the quality of the food is really nice. What we ordered: 2x Tri-tip burrito, no beans no rice Pork burrito, no beans 2x chicken burrito They're definitely faster. Took about five minutes for the whole order. Place could be a little cleaner, but they have such a high turnover with people, probably hard to keep up. Since this is the cheapest place to have dinner in town or lunch, there's always a line. But again it does go fast. Will definitely be back again and again lol

Yelp
This place is freaking awesome. Food is amazing. It's inexpensive, it comes out fast and it's just awesome. Service is good.

Yelp
Was hoping for more flavor but service was great! A warm meal in the cold weather. Staff is very attentive and courteous.

Yelp
One star because there is nothing else I can give. Store business and info online state open at 10:30am on Sundays. 5 past 11, with employees inside the shop, and doors locked. Perhaps call ahead.
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
It was good not The best rotisserie chicken but the tri tip had an ok flavor. Great service though and clean atmosphere their sides had good flavor.

Yelp
Being really hungry can be a good thing because it forces you to wipe your plate clean even when the food is only *okay*. After a long day we came in starving and trusted that Yelp reviews wouldn't disappoint. It is Tahoe after all and given that I live in San Jose where we have the best Mexican food and lots of it, I have to say that I'm pretty spoiled. I know what it's supposed to taste like so I can be picky. The Tacos Al Pastor plate was reviewed the most so I thought I would give them a try. They didn't skimp on the lime which I loved-- one slice to squeeze in for every taco. Once I took a bite, I was already disappointed. The meat tasted like it had just been sitting for awhile and just warmed up for the order. The black beans were also okay-- lacked in flavor. Off the top of my head, I can name 2 spots in San Jose where they do the black beans just right. As for the Mexican rice- this was decent but also lacked in flavor and a little overcooked. The salsas were pretty watery and their version of "hot" wasn't hot at all. For what it's worth, this place will get you full if you're hungry.
google avatar

T H.

Yelp
This place is good, but wtf is with them taking the phone off the hook all the time. Then it claims they were open to have two guys sitting eating waving you to leave because they aren't or won't open. Go to Incline and get T's!! That is the OG with better customer service.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Not great. Not even close. We ordered the 1/4 Chicken Plate and 1/2 Chicken Plate which I think many reviewers have been referring to as rotisserie chicken meals. The chicken was rather flavorless. We expected much better based on the reviews. The mexican rice side was better than the meat. Black bean and slaw sides were fine. The cashier told me to go with medium salsa instead of hot. The medium turned out to be very mild. It's provided in a very small plastic cup about half the size of a dixie cup (1 or 2 ounces at most) and isn't enough for a 1/2 Chicken Plate that lacks flavor. When I later asked the cashier for a little bit of hot salsa he told me I'd have to pay 75 cents. No way. Sadly I tipped 15% when I placed my order. Not only did I get no service, he never gave me a receipt. I don't recommend this restaurant. There's a much better restaurant called T's Mesquite in Incline Village if you happen to be in that area or are willing to make the drive.

Yelp
Special Gem in Truckee. For a quick and tasty meal Golden Rotisserie is our go to. From chicken burritos to whole chicken meals with sides. The food is delicious. For the whole chicken meal, you can order your choice of sides and they are big! You get a whole chicken and your choice of garlic bread or tortillas. It is a walk up and order spot but service is always quick as they are usually busy busy! I recommend calling your order in especially if you are planning on getting a whole chicken. They tend to run out when it's super busy! The ambiance is like a regular at taqueria, nothing special but you go for the good eats or most folks take it home or on the road. Probably only like 8 tables in the place.

Yelp
I've been here twice now after a day of skiing. The first time I thought omg this is fantastic. This second time I brought someone with me and they said it was the best rotisserie chicken they have ever had. The flavor is amazing. Juicy. Cooked to perfection. Crispy skin. I also got the tri-tip (both times) which was delicious. The spicy salsa isn't too spicy. I got the rice and beans on the side. Throwing it all into a tortilla and dipping it in the hot sauce was a 10/10 experience. Both times. The first time I took it to go and this second time I dined in. The workers are so sweet. I'll keep coming back here for my post ski meals!

Yelp
The food was tasty, the dining area was clean, service was kind. As with every food place in Truckee, the bill adds up. We were charged $0.25 for a to-go container which is a new law here that I was unaware of. Keep this in mind if you're visiting and prefer to bring your own to-go container. At first I was irritated with the charge, not realizing it was new law and having tipped 20% already, but I get it now.

Yelp
Delicious pork taco's with hot sauce!!!! Tri tip burrito with hot sauce is excellent! Best in Truckee. I've been going there for years. Also try burrito with half chicken half pork. So good.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
Food is great, especially the tri tip burrito and the service good. Don't sleep on the green salsa! Try and stop here every time we're in the area.
google avatar

Jeanette P.

Yelp
I ordered a half chicken plate to go. The staff was friendly and let me know that there would be a little bit of a longer wait time while they cooked more chicken which I appreciated. Once I got my meal, the food was delicious and their red salsa was good!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
A Mexican version of rotisserie. We picked the family pack and an order of tri-tip. We were able to taste all 5 sides (2 from the tri-tip order were small, the 3 from the family pack were large), our favorites were rice, potato salad and black beans. Nice to have option of tortillas or bread with both meals. The medium salsa was a personal highlight. Also ordered the guacamole and while it was good, it was better when you added some salsa for a kick. Ordered for takeout and our full order only took 10 min to prepare on a weekday evening.

Cort C.

Yelp
Stopped in to grab some cheaper food while in town and was really pleased with this place! We all got burritos and they were simple but tasty. I think I really missed out by not ordering the chicken--- oops! But my burrito was tasty regardless. My friend with me mentioned that the chile rellano was a bit flavorless but that was our only complaint among the whole table. Overall, we all really enjoyed it!
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Juicy chicken burrito, slapped with a sweet and tasty verde sauce. Im used to burritos that are a little larger, yet this is a perfect portion size not to knock you on the sofa.
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Please change your open hours on Google if you're going to close early! It sucks to drive out of your way and see that y'all have closed early.

Michael Varela

Yelp
Good food good service. Always nice to come in and be greeted with a smile. Definitely a go to for lunch.
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
All things considered, for a Tahoe trip this was decent. We ordered a ton of items that I can't even remember, but they ended up forgetting a few of the sauces as well as the garlic bread. But for less than $90 for 6 people with leftovers, it's hard to complain. Chicken itself is not terrible but the rest of the food is too salty and no real flavor. Way too much beans and rice in the burritos. Salsas are also mediocre.
google avatar

AL S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious roasted chicken! Get the family deal! Great for a family of 4. Everything is always fire here. Cashiers are allergic to smiling or being very nice...But I still recommend this spot to anybody looking for a roast chicken dinner. The cucumber salad and habanero salsa smacks too!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Food is always great! Service could use some refining. Seems to be distracted and unfriendly
google avatar

Terry F.

Yelp
The staff look like they're having a blast while they take your order and have your food ready before you can blink an eye! Amazing prices.

Ellen T.

Yelp
Wondering why today on a Sunday at 11 o'clock there's two guys sitting at a table eating no one behind the counter and all they do is shake their head no and that's it so no management nobody knowing that they're open and they're just turning customers away. Guess I'll just drive to Incline like I always do.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Come here almost every time I vacation in Truckee and it didn't disappoint this trip. I don't know how they can make the orders as fast as they do but it's like a NASCAR pit stop. Order, sit down and the food is ready. The burritos are delicious and just the right size. Not so big you feel like you can't eat for 24 hours but not so small I need to get another one. The choice of meats are delicious and have a great spice to them. I'll be back again next time I stay in Truckee.
google avatar

Randy B.

Yelp
If you need a fast, no-frills, affordable burrito. This is a great place. If you n your way to ski or on your way home from skiing, this quickie Mex will hit the spot. I have always been confused by the name, thinking it was a chicken meal place. But it is fairly authentic Mex! Their "hot" sauce is nicely hot.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
I love golden rotisserie! I always come here when I'm in the area and I really like how their burritos always are fresh and hot and there's a really nice mix of spices in it to give it that authentic Mexican taste. Also it's awesome that they are Manchester city fans!

Golf A.

Yelp
Had the Al pastor taco plate with rice and beans, as well as cucumber salad and potato salad as sides. Tacos are flavorful and cooked right, beans yummy, two side dishes both fantastic. What a hidden gem in Truckee
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
Stopped here on a wym after sledding. As the name says, they feature rotisserie cooked meats in all sorts of Mexican entrees. Service style was order and pick up at the counter. I had the asada burrito and it was large and good, loaded with meat, beans, and rice. Looking back i woulda added some veggies to it like lettuce or peppers as it needed some crunch. Meat was flavorful but burrito was a little too juicy and by that I mean watery (not sure why). Also had the chips and pico de gallo, which were excellent. I could tell that both were house-made and fresh. My son had the cheese quesadilla, which was not good and barely had any cheese at all in it. Prices are average. I'd go back if I happen to be in the area but not going out of my way.
google avatar

Macy R.

Yelp
Amazing burritos at an affordable price. I can't wait to be back. The best spot for after snowboarding

Mike T.

Yelp
We were looking for dinner options in Truckee after a great day skiing. Golden Rotisserie came up as an option for Mexican (even though the name made me take a second look). We had a Tri-tip golden burrito and the special tacos al pastor plate to go and both were AMAZING !!! Even the rice & black beans sides for with the taco plate were fantastic. Definitely recommend & definitely will be back... maybe tomorrow
google avatar

Lora C.

Yelp
When you're in truckee the options are limited in a small cozy town and you want to try new things. We stopped upon here and we all ordered our own plates which comes with 2 sides. I had a tri-tip with potato salad and rice. My tei tip was dry dry dry, the nice sauce that had a good kick didn't really help it. The potato salad was good and creamy... The rice was bad.... bad bad bad.. Most of us who ordered rice agreed on that.
google avatar

Lan N.

Yelp
Pretty cool place. They serve mexican food and also have rotisserie chickens. Needing some dinner for the family, I came here to grab a family meal which consisted of a whole rotisserie chicken, 3 sides, salsa and tortillas or bread. I got the rice, potato salad and cucumber salad. The chicken was pretty tasty and a good size. The breast was a little dry. They cut it up for you so it is easy to eat right away. No need to break down the chicken. The rice and potato salad was good as well. I wasn't a fan of the cucumber salad. It was a little over 30 dollars for all family meal. The tacos and burritos sounded good, but the family meal was way more than enough food. Maybe I can give them a try another time. If you're in the area at an airbnb or hotel and need some food for a family, this is a good place to check out.
google avatar

Aimee W.

Yelp
This place has been on our dining rotation for many years while we are in Truckee. The family rotisserie pack is still the best deal in town. Can't pass up a rotisserie chicken, sides and great salsa (love the medium spice) for our family of four. We've also had their Mexican options - the tostadas are one of our faves.
google avatar

Taylor S.

Yelp
Best chicken burrito I've ever had. Hits the spot after a long day in the snow. Service was so fast also.
google avatar

Shannon F.

Yelp
A go-to for easy weeknight dinners. They're FAST and consistently delicious. Prices are reasonable and ingredients always fresh- not too greasy. We eat here about twice a month and we're never disappointed
