We tried the classic fish and chips, and it was absolutely delicious! The chips were out of this world! The service, food, and atmosphere were all top-notch. However, be aware that if you order just one meal for two people, they might charge you an extra 5 pounds (as we noticed on the menu) for the second person who didn’t order anything. To avoid this, we opted for a salad instead.

We were served by Aliza, Nahari & Maria who were all so lovely & friendly. Thank you. This was the best fish and chips we have ever tasted! Everything is made fresh, all tastes homemade & such good quality. The chicken & mushroom pie was also delicious. We have already recommended to family & friends. 5 stars!!

First fish and chips I had in this current visit to London and it doesn’t disappoint. The fish wasnt oily at all so I can enjoy the crispiness and flavour of the fish. The portions are very generous and I was 100% full after my meal. Service is great as even when the shop started filling up, the orders came in a very timely manner.

A mate told me this was one the best fish and chip places he's gone and it didn't disappoint! Was super tasty! I had the haddock and my GF the cod and we both agree cod was better and less fishy tasting. The chips were fried well but I'd like them but crisper. Overall really solid. Loved the vibe of the place too. The milk shake was kinda meh but the fish and chips nailed it!

Seems like the first fish and chips I ever tried in my life has ruined me for any that may follow. I found this place by looking up good fish and chips places in London and it kept popping up. Despite the quite steep price, the food itself is amazing. The fried batter around the fish is crispy and flavourful, the fish itself soft and melts in your mouth. The chips and the sauce were also something to write home about. Genuinely can’t praise the food enough. Do look out for the “service charge” on the bill though. It is automatically added and can rack the total amount up quite a bit. We found it to be quite tacky, that the tip was expected.

I had a pretty disappointing experience at Golden Union. The waiting time was far longer than expected, with very little communication about how long food would actually take. Even after ordering, there were noticeable delays before the food arrived, which made the whole visit frustrating. On top of that, the smell inside the restaurant was unpleasant and lingered throughout the space, making it hard to enjoy the meal once it finally came out. Overall, between the long waits, delayed food, and uncomfortable environment, this wasn’t a great experience and I wouldn’t rush back.

Crispy thinly battered fish which was not over seasoned. A big portion of chips perfectly fried. Servise was exceptional. It will be hard to get better fish and chips anywhere else.

Fresh food takes time. Lots of research and referrals. This was good for locals and tourists; but not filled with tourists. Food was fresh; great service. Our family made the right decision. Ambiance was busy; free jukebox. Chips/fries were great as was our meals; I would go back

Stopped by here for dinner on a Sunday during my trip to London. We kept seeing fish and chips on restaurant menus and felt it was a must while in the city. We found this place online as we were having drinks in SOHO. We made a good choice. When you walk in, it's there take away area. Continue to the back and you will be seated by their staff. I ordered the "Old Jamaica Ginger Beer" it was really good. Something I hadn't tried before and it was worth it. I ordered the Haddock & Chips. honey had the Scampi & Chips. The Haddock was really fresh, fried with a thin batter and crispy and less flaky. Paired with the tater sauce it was really good. I enjoyed the scampi too. It was battered just right and if I return, I will definitely order that. They have a juke box, but the selection of Beyonce music made the restaurant a vibe. Overall a great place for a quick bite of you're in the SOHO area.

The fish is definitely the star of the show! Come here to Golden Union! This is definitely a busy location. I was fortunate to come here just before it was peak dinner time and I did see a lot of people waiting. If you look to come here at usually meal times, be ready for a wait! What Is great about this establishment is that they have many options for your fish in case you are craving something in particular. With it being my first time here, I was looking to try either the Haddock or Cod, and decided on the Haddock. Once I received my fish and chips, I was ready to eat and wow the fish was so good and well fried. I tasted how good the fried batter was while all the flavor of the fish was still inside! I could eat this fried fish all day! The batter had the flakiness to it which added a nice texture. As for the chips (fries), I will say that they were average and nothing too special. However, keep that appetite for the fish! Make sure you finish that! Service itself was pretty fast and prompt. They definitely look to get your food quickly so you can enjoy your meal so they can accommodate as many people as possible.

As a UK tourist, the one thing you must get is fish and chips. With the thousands of recommendations of where to go, my first fish and chips experience was very much worth it! I loved the decor when walking in, I thought it was so fun in there! You can choose to take away or sit in the restaurant (which my friend and I did). I ordered the cod and chips and my friend ordered the haddock and chips. The portion of the haddock was HUGE so come hungry.

The restaurant is like a smaller takeout with table service. The staff kept the tables very clean and kept them moving. We had the fish and chips with a side of mushy peas. We chose the haddock, the white fish was nice and flaky and the batter was crisp. The fish might have needed a minute or two before being plated to get off some of the extra oil but it didn't ruin the meal. I asked for the crisps (fries) crispy and I'm glad I did, they came out excellent and not overcooked. we wanted to get some fish and chips but also wanted a place that wasn't greasy and also offered alternatives so looked online and found Golden Union. It's a relatively small place so there's a wait but the service is pretty quick. we got the fist bits plus chips, battered halloumi and chips, a bread roll and gravy. the batter on fish and halloumi were really good and not greasy at all. the taste was good if not a bit bland - the gravy we got on the side definitely helped! the chips were average. portion size was really good as fish bites were really plentiful. the bread was extra and was basically a regular bun with lots of butter. overall a nice place to get good fish and chips and other!

Amazing fish and chips! Small restaurant but excellent customer service and food. You can watch them cooking the fish and chips as you enter. Ate here several times and the food was consistently good. The portion of fish and chips for the price is HUGE and could be split with two people if desired. Look around hardly anybody leaves food on their plate lol. The fish is fresh, moist, piping hot, and just delicious. Tried the haddock and cod fish and chips. Loved both. The tarter is also homemade and compliments the fish well. I also enjoyed the crips but their onion rings are outstanding. I was a little shocked that it came with BBQ sauce but it was actually really good as a dipping sauce. On the second visit, we decided to get only fish with onion rings. So you can order the fish a la carte and other menu items. Do yourself a favor and make this your first fish and chips stop! You won't regret it.

We visited London and obviously had to try fish and chips and Golden Union showed up on many must eat lists. We arrived around 2pm and there was a line for dine in but there is the option to takeaway as well. We were seated within 15 minutes and decided on haddock and prawns and chips and got gravy and a side salad. This was the best fish of fish and chips I have ever had. Perfectly cooked white wish that went amazing with the tartar sauce and the breading was so light and crispy. Prawns were also tasty and well fried. The chips were okay... I understand they are not supposed to be crispy but softer and chunkier but I'm learning to like chips for what they are. The gravy took the chips to the next level though, so highly recommend that combo and grateful our waitress told us to do that. I was not a fan of sauces like the tarter costing extra but you do get a small portion with your meal but if you like more sauce, be prepared to pay more. Overall a delicious meal and would definitely come back if we're ever in London again!

Was hoping to get good fish & chips while in the UK and this was it! For three, we shared the cod & chips and pollock & chips (it was a lighter meal). I can tell the slight difference between the dishes but it's both white soft fish and both had good flavor and friedness. Both pieces of fish were bigger than I expected. They do have curry sauce which apparently is a common thing but we just stuck to tartare sauce this time around which was a great addition. The restaurant is super lively, staff is friendly and attentive, would come back again!

When in England, London specifically, it only makes sense to get fish & chips. This place served up some pretty good fish & chips at that. Nice breading, tender fillet, good flavor, and the fries, aka chips, were golden brown with the right amount of crispiness.

Haddock fish and chips was great. If you've had cod before and enjoy it, try this haddock!

I heard about Golden Union from watching "Worth It: Fish & Chips" episode on YouTube. So I bookmarked this place to try for our London trip. We weren't super hungry so we shared the cod & chips and side salad. The cod was quite a big piece of fish and tasted pretty good. We also did the add-on for tartar sauce for an extra 1.50 GBP. Overall, we came here for the experience of having a traditional fish & chips meal while in London. The food was a bit pricey for what you get- IMO. At least, we had good service while dining here.

while visiting london, i needed to try fish n chips at least once. we decided to go to golden union due to the high ratings. i was pleasantly surprised that the inside of the restaurant was quite nice and modern with plenty of seating. service was friendly and efficient. note: there a 12.5% service charge included in the bill. also, there is a 10 pound minimum per person, so if you split a dish with someone, you have to order a side or drink to meet the requirement. lastly, tartar sauce costs extra which seems a little unnecessary. // cod and chips // my friend and i shared the cod and chips with tartar sauce. the employee mentioned cod and haddock are the most popular -- haddock has a stronger "fish" taste and is a bit larger/chunkier in size. the photos don't do it justice but the portion is quite big. the batter on the cod felt light which i appreciated. the cod itself did not really have much flavor, and i felt like in general the dish lacked salt or seasoning/flavor. but, for fish and chips it felt better quality since it wasn't too bready or greasy. the chips and tartar sauce were standard and the lemon wedge helped add flavor. we also got the elderflower soda which tasted like elderflower and apple juice.

Best fish and chips that I've eaten. First time trying mushy peas and I loved it! It melted in my mouth and was very flavorful. The tartar sauce is also amazing. Definitely recommend this place. Small wait, but food came quick.

Some authentic and delicious traditional fish and chips to be had in London. Ambience is unremarkable, but don't let that discourage you from waiting for a seat for the best fish and chips in London proper! The fish is worth the wait, and you can watch them grab your favorite fresh fish filet and hand bread it in front of you. The chips are thick and tasty. You are going to love the homemade tater sauce. They have plant based options for your vegan friends. And a unisex toilet for your non binary friends. The Coiley fish was soft and sweet, but it's hard to beat the haddock which my son had. The service was friendly, and several beer choices are available along with sodas and Pellegrino.

Really good fish & chips. It was my friend's first time in England, so he wanted to try a staple, I guess. We found ourselves here at Golden Union Fish Bar, which despite being a bit crowded and seemingly hectic, was actually run fairly well and quite smoothly. We were seated, put in our orders, and also got the tartar sauce. Unfortunately, you had to pay extra for it, but not a dealbreaker. They offer a few different types of fish on the menu, so it's hard to decide if you don't really know what you want. We honestly picked our fish at random, but they were both really quite good. The lady who took our order and served our food was also lovely, and overall, we had a good time dining here. Would definitely recommend it!

First meal in the UK and it was a good one. We arrived shortly after they opened for the day and were promptly greeted by the gentleman behind the counter. While casual, it is a sit down restaurant with waiter service. The two of us ordered the cod and chips, though you can choose from a couple different types of fried fish. The fish was crispy, hot, and decent portioned. They do charge extra for tartar sauce, which from a US perspective is odd but perhaps that is the norm here, not sure. The tartar sauce had a lot of dill flavor to it which was unexpected but interesting. Overall, a bit expensive for fish and chips but very good and I'd go back if I found myself on Oxford Street.

Have been waiting to try some authentic fish and chips as i had tried one last week at a pub and it was far from what I was hold consider authentic. Came across Golden Union as I had read some reviews from on them. Decided on a lunch when I was on a walk in Soho. Dined alone, was promptly seated. The restaurant has only about 10-12 tables. Ordered the small haddock and chips for lunch. The meal was served super hot and generous portions. The fish was crispy and tasty. iOS there was more of their freshly made tartar sauce was served.

This is a great place for fish and chips. Price was fair. Clean bathroom. Ambience was good. Plates are Texas-sized so it's good to share. Fries were great. Coleslaw was awesome. They forgot the tartar sauce but the lemons did the job. Do recommend! Sorry forgot to take a picture of my plate but presentation was nice as well.

Food was so so so good. I love fish and chips so it was very much up my alley. Went there two days in a row. Loved the haddock.

Great chippy! They serve both dine-in and takeaway. Not a lot of tables. Table service hostess stand is on the right just past the kitchen. Ordered the pollock basket. Came out hot. Lightly breaded, not the thick crust covering dry fish you'll find in some pubs. Generous portion too. Tartar made in house was thick and tasty. Best I've come across. Even the ketchup for chips was more like Heinz than some of the watery stuff you find here. Seating was near full but service was friendly, prompt and attentive. I had gone by Mayfair Chippy first and it was mobbed with tourists (Saturday at 1:00 so should have expected that). This is a short walk away and very good.

A bit pricy perhaps and the food took a while to come out but beautifully fried fish, crispy chips, delicious mushy peas and great tartar sauce. Don't know about it being a great example of the genre but I sure killed it!

What's up: When in London, we had to try a fish and chips place. A friend recommended Golden Union, so we went looking for the place. Parking: Did not apply to us since we took the Tube and walked everywhere. Environment: As you walk in, you have the option to order to go at the counter or go towards the right and eat in (which was what we did). The toilet (only one) is located in the back towards the left of the neon red "Golden Union" sign. Food and beer menus are on the table as well as the condiments (ketchup, salt, vinegar). The staff was friendly. What was ordered: In addition to a bottle of the London Pride Ale, we had the Cod & Chips and the Haddock & Chips. The plates were huge and came with tartar sauce. Both fishes were lightly battered and fried nicely; also yummy. Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. The food was good and the portion size was larger than expected. Our first fish and chips experience in London was enjoyable. Credit cards were accepted.

Awesome, laid back spot serving a British stable. Not just serving but executing it flawlessly. The "it" in question is fish and chips. The fish is fried to perfection, leaving you with a light, crispy crust and delectable fish that you can taste and enjoy. The crisps (fries) are plentiful. Do yourself a favor and get the house made tarter sauce. I highly recommend Golden Union.

Pretty good Fish n Chips. The batter is super light. If you squeeze lemons on it the batter will become soggy. I'd recommend skipping the lemon. Tartare sauce was good and the chips were decent too.

I love fish and chips. I love it. I didn't think I would but I do. They have a small basket or a large basket. The price difference is negligible so just stick with the large. Haddock was flaky and the cod was chunky. Both very good. Batter was light and crispy - you'll need to salt it though Chips were good and the tartar sauce was excellent. Mushy peas were excellent. One is good enough to share between 2-3 people. Not better than Fish at the Borough market IMO but still a solid choice.

This was solid, but it's got tough competition surrounding it. The restaurant is very clean and quick. I loved the (fake) garden through the window on the back. The toilet is unisex, one room in the back. It was clean. The fish and chips was good but nowhere near as good as I've had in other places. The chips were pretty blah. The mushy peas are a definite standout. Our server mentioned that it's a lot of butter. I'd definitely recommend. Tartar sauce is homemade, with tarragon. Service is quick and friendly. I also loved the playlist at the time- I was definitely reliving high school.

This was my first meal in London & it set the tone of the entire trip which was to eat like a local. The fish was fresh, flaky, & gigantic! I couldn't finish the small despite how famished I was when I arrived. The service was great too. The area feels like a 1950s diner. Shakes, neon signs, jukebox, red & white checkered decor. Going back to the food, I really appreciated the freshness of both the fish and the chips. Only thing I would change is that I think the fish could use a little more seasoning before batter is applied.

The food was amazing I loved the fish, chips, curry sauce and mushy peas #AMAZING NO WAIT around 9pm Wanted a glass of champagne but they only serve by the bottle. Only problem was the waitress said they dnT give out the WiFi password and that's sad being that many tourist frequent this place!

Excellent food! Yesterday for brunch, I had Traditional Fish and Chips Perfection. It was delicious meal. really great location, The restaurant itself provides a welcoming ambience with a genuine vibe. And everyone there is so welcoming. The menu was fantastic, fantastic service too.

When in London of course you have to have Fish & Chips so decided to give Golden Union a try. We had a not so great experience at another Fish & Chips spot, the night before, that had great reviews (4.5 stars). They closed at 11 & we arrived at 10:20. Our options were takeaway only so we took ourselves and our business elsewhere. Back to the Golden Union. We arrived on a Tuesday evening around 7 and were seated immediately although they were full by 8. We started with a couple of local Lagers from a can (can't remember the name) which were very good. They have a great variety of fish to choose from which I haven't seen before. From Haddock to Cod, Plaice, Pollock, Hake & Rock Salmon. We asked our server which is most popular. Haddock & Cod. She suggested ordering two different ones and we did. Fish was fried and battered to perfection. Very light and not greasy. Chips & Tartar sauce were also excellent! That said, we couldn't really tell the difference between Cod and Haddock. In addition to the variety of fish, they have Prawn, Halloumi & Sausage dishes. So much more than fish & chips. Located in soho and with excellent service & reasonable prices. We will be back!

Loved this place! ‍ First Fish & Chip stop in London and it was awesome! The waiters were supper friendly and helpful. The food came out hot and crispy! I really recommend the Cod & Chips with the tartar sauce! They also have great beer on the menu as well!

Wow. The Cod was so juicy and tasty. However, I wish it was a bit more crispier. We got a small size and it was bigger than expected. It looked like a large but it was the small size. The prawns were good but wasn't as big as I thought. It looked like shrimp with a thick batter. It was good overall. Nice little sit in spot. Lots of variety on the menu and different drinks too.

As an American visiting London I felt compelled to try out fish and chips at a traditional shop. My husband had the haddock while I had the cod and honestly both were fantastic. The servers were super kind and helped us understand the different kinds of fish before we ordered. I really appreciated the care that they had and loved everything we got there. I ordered the curry sauce for our fries, erm, chips* and that was definitely a hit at our table!

When in London... Great customer service in a casual setting. The fried cod was super juicy with a light batter. The tartar is creamy and delicious. Portions are humongous! I would recommend this place for getting your fish and chips fix.

This was is probably the American in me but I was not impressed with the fish and chips here. I had the one piece and chips and it was pretty bland. Not very flavorful at all. Definitely wasn't expecting that for my first fish and chip experience in London.

The one thing that I wanted to make sure I ate while in London was a properly prepared fish and chips. I had did a search on Yelp to help me out with this and after looking at multiple places I decided on here. When you enter you are entering an authentic city establishment. Greeted by a counter that kind of guides you to the dining area. The setup almost reminds you of a diner setting. Once I was seated I looked over the menu rather quickly because I didn't really care about what else was offered, I already knew I wanted fish and chips. However, I did ask the server what her take on the best option was. Without hesitation she had said I should try the haddock and chips. So without me hesitating, that's what I ordered. I'm not sure what I was expecting for fish and chips, but when they arrived I was surprised by the serving size. This piece of fish barely fit on the plate. The breading on the fish was amazing, perfect amount of crunch factor, give it a spritz of lemon and you can dive in. I will admit that I was a bit leery of tartar sauce in general, but I figured why not give it a try. Was I ever glad I did. I'm not sure how they prepare their tartar sauce but it was so flavorful. Having that mix with the fish and touch of lemon was an extraordinary blast of flavor. Needless to say, but that fish didn't last long on the plate, no matter the size. The chips, oh my god, the chips. I felt as if I had died and gone to heaven. I am such a potato person and I couldn't help but gobble these chips up. So fresh. I usually don't use ketchup due to allergies, but I couldn't resists here. Plus the bottle was irresistible to not use. I mean, come on, a tomato shaped ketchup bottle, this makes you want to use it. The staff were amazing and attentive. I didn't have many questions while I was here but they did answer every question I had with ease. And I must have timed it just right when I arrived here as the place was nearly empty. So service was fast and the atmosphere was great.

We stalked Golden Union Fish Bar a few months before coming to London and it didn't disappoint! Now, I heard it's all about timing - we came around 7pm and got seated pretty quickly, but then it started to pick up a little bit after the fact. You have the option of take-away or to stay-in, and I recommend eating there if you have the time. For food, we went with the large portion of fish and chips. Jaime got salmon and I went with the cod. Now, the portions are insanely large. Like really effing big. But for a few more pounds it's totally worth it if you're on the hungrier side. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and kept that nice crunchy texture until the very end. I think I was more in love with the cod over the salmon because of the big thick chunks of meat that were being produced, but loved the taste of the salmon too. The chips (fries) were ample and thick cut and wonderful as well. Used them to consume the remainder of the tarter sauce that was leftover from our fish. I was curious about the rose hip gin & tonic and it was amazing. It's fragrant without being over the top. I'm going to look for these in the States because they were that wonderful. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area and want some fantastic fish and chips!

A trip to London would not be complete without fish and chips. So here we are after going through a Top Ten fish and chips recommendation. We had the cod, haddock and plaice. The batter were the same fluffy and crispy beer batter. Quite greasy. The cod is buttery and juicy, but lacks flavor. The haddock has better flavor but is drier. The plaice is huge, but a bit fishy for me and not as juicy as the cod. I am not a fan of the fries here at all. I prefer crispier versions. The portions are enormous. I was stuffed to the brim with just a Small. The mushy peas and pickle was interesting to try a little bit of. My London host said this is the best fish and chips she have had (and she have tried many fish and chips here). I had surprisingly better fish and chips in both USA and New Zealand.

Came in based on the great reviews. I ordered the fish bites and chips because they consist of both cod and haddock. I got the regular which was a pretty big plate of food for one person. I thought it was ok to be honest. The chips were pretty good, but the fish was ok. Felt a little greasy to me. The tarter sauce was pretty good. I'd suggest going to Poppies instead which I think does better fish and chips. This place is ok if you're in a rush and craving fish and chips, but I've had better. I will say though the customer service was great for me here. Server was attentive and kind and they also played good music here too.

We split our cod fish and chips because we were so full but we have to try this place. We ordered a side of curry sauce too. The breading is so light and flaky! The chips are chips always awesome, we dipped it in curry sauce. Service is friendly. I always love a place when they don't give you attitude when you split because when I travel, I want to try a little bit of everything.

Huge massive portions, their "small" is nowhere near small at all. Light flaky delicious fish with a delicate coating, and thick crispy chips. I love their ketchup in the squeezable cute tomato containers, and I like to load up my chips with lots of their vinegar. They just added calamari to their menu, and it's served with a lovely sweet chili sauce. Everything about this meal just hit the spot! Everything is fresh cooked to order
