12 Hardcore Portland-Area Brewpubs | Eater Portland

"McMinnville’s Golden Valley Brewery opened this Beaverton brewpub in 2012, with a sprawling dining room that seats 200 and a south-facing patio that can fit another 85. Its full menu and vibe certainly feel more restaurant first and brewery second, but the beers made by this old school craft brewer have been dialed in over more than 25 years, and the attention to detail by brewmaster Piper Gladwill is apparent. The portions at this family friendly brewpub are massive; for instance, the cider-brined pork schnitzel comes covered in a lemon caper brown butter and loaded up with kolsch-braised cabbage and confit fingerling potatoes. It washes down well with the Carlton Kolsch or the gold medal winning Beaverton Blonde ale." - Ron Scott

Google
We got their chicken pot pie and fish and chips. Fish and chips were good but tartar sauce wasn’t tasty to me. The chicken pot pie was pretty unique looking; pie was good, Zucchinis and onions were only partially cooked.. too much herb flavor. Prob not ordering again. The crispy thin one is just straight burn taste.

Google
Such a wonderful place with excellent service, great food selection, and extensive beverage menu. The Fresh Hop Hazy IPA was really good. The outdoor seating is very well done.

Had a great time at Golden Valley. I had the pretzel appetizer and it was delicious, with a fantastic whole seed sweet mustard and creamy cheese sauce. For my meal, I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was probably the juiciest sandwich I've ever had. Also had the Wild Roots Moscow Mule for Mule Monday, which tasted amazing and was only $7. The entrees are a bit pricey, but considering how amazing they tasted, I think it was well worth it.

Google
Nice GV pale ale after a loooong day in the sun. I had their halibut. Pretty dang tasty!

Google
Had a wonderful valentines dinner thank you to our server Don! It was just a lovely time wonderful food I got a pork schnitzel! And a strawberry lemons drop drink :)

Google
Got the steak with chimichurri and and old fashioned. Old fashioned was on point but my steak was a little underwhelming. Chimichurri was heavy on the cumin for my taste. Overall nice place and I'd go back again.

So I booked a hotel that had an in-house restaurant near by. Sadly they didn't have a cook as I discovered after ordering a beer. I began looking for food delivery options when it occurred to me to see what was close. This spot was a skip and 1 hop from my hotel. I read a couple reviews and when one mentioned the candied bacon, I didn't even finish my $8 hotel beer, tipped the bartender $2 and yeeted myself right into my truck headed for candied bacon bliss. On arrival the hostess was slick, seated me and of course raved on the Dish of the week. Schnitzel Au Poivre. I settled in, looked at a few beer options and went with the Tannin Bomb. Great winter beer btw. The candied bacon arrived and WOW it did not disappoint. I actually started writing this with the one piece left in my photo. Waiting on my Schnitzel. And now it has arrived....damn boys...GTG..food waits for no man!.

Google
Visited Golden Valley Brewery while in town on business. Wanted a steak and this place was recommended by local coworkers. I'm from Texas where steaks are king. I was pleasantly surprised at the 12 oz steak at Golden Valley. As a post work treat, I also decided to have a ,"soon of a peach and it was really good If you're ever in Hillsboro Oregon... Stop in and check this place out #rodpverified

Yelp
Visited multiple times, and it's consistently great. The food is delicious, with fresh ingredients and bold flavors. Service is friendly, attentive, and efficient every time. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place is amazing. I have several dietary restrictions and they have so many options for me. In addition to the usual suspects, gluten and vegan, they also offer options for avoiding alliums, soy, and nuts. They also have Bauman's on tap, which is a bonus because it's my favorite! I brought my daughter (4) and they were great with her too! Loved the atmosphere and service, and we will definitely be returning often!

Yelp
We dined here for an early lunch but they took so long during the entire process that we were late for our appointment!! Don't know if the guy was new or what. [NOTE: I talked to the floor manager and she says he has been here for a while, so I guess the services is just s-l-o-w!!] Everyone enjoyed their food, I appreciated that I could have my burger medium-rare. But the chips that came with it were awful, no flavor and too over-cooked. The ceasar salad was good. The soda was flat. But the reason for the 1-star is that I just got my credit card statement and noticed that they added $2.00 to my bill!! Unbelievable. I will call them right now to see what they have to say. [NOTE: apparently they added $2.00 to their tip!! They will refund me the $2.]

Yelp
The food is overly priced for the proportions received. My son's and I got nachos for our appetizer and it was had only one layer of chips with toppings. I was disappointed because the last time we went there, the nachos plate had more chips with a ton of toppings for the same price. Overall, the food was just okay for me. My gluten free burger arrived late since they forgot to make it gluten free so I had to take it to go. The fries weren't crispy, the coleslaw was bland. It was expensive mediocre, old people food. We won't be coming back.

Yelp
All American beer brewery and American food fare. Wide selection of craft and bottled beer and classic foods with decent service. No complaints for the price and ambience, lots of ample parking as well! Enjoyed my steak salad, a tad to vinegar and interesting take with out cutting the lettuce but they do leave you a steak life, LOL

Yelp
I would love to tell you how the food was here, but today, six of us got seated and 15 minutes later we left. We never were acknowledged ( with the exception of the host who seated us), let alone offered drinks. While we sat and waited for someone to even recognize us as patrons, two tables who came in after us were served. It wasn't that busy (2 pm 6/21) and there were servers, but one server was sitting down bussing a booth instead of even saying hello, and the rest worked the tables on either side of us, but just not us. Ridiculous. As we all walked out, not a word. Six people getting up and walking out, and they didn't acknowledge that either. Nah, I think we will go give our business to someone who wants it.

Yelp
Mimosa cider.... so good. One of the best ciders I've had in Oregon. Also had the avocado BLT sandwich. I'm a sandwich lover, the sandwich was fine, expected more/different sandwich options. Service was quick and waitress was great. A great place to meet up with friends for food and drinks.

Yelp
Great hospitality and wonderful service from the hostess and our server. We needed a late dinner and they were very kind even though we showed up 20 minutes before closing. The hostess made several great recommendations and we ordered all of them and loved them. Rueben was juicy and fresh. The grilled chicken salad was fresh and we liked the citrus vinaigrette that we substituted. The Korean chicken sandwich was okay, but not bad. Their french fries are the double fried kind that are nice and crunchy. I would definitely come back when we are in town.

Yelp
We had family in town from Europe and we all decided a last minute dinner together. 16 of us... not easy to find a place to take us last minute but Golden Valley was able to accommodate us. With large parties, gratuity is included and they can slip the check 4 ways, this made things super easy. I love that menu offers local meats and there were vegan options for one of our party members. I ordered the Korean bbq ribs... talk about fall off the bone tender! The full portion was worth it because I had leftovers to pop in the oven at home. Im coming back for these! This place is great for large parties and the service was wonderful. Our server was patient and she did not have any mistakes! Thanks for such a wonderful experience. We will be returning

Yelp
I agree with folks that this place is very overpriced. We went in for lunch today and got a $22.00 crispy chicken salad small layer of lettuce , followed by a thin layer of toppings and a warm piece of chicken not super crispy. (1) cider and (1) kid Mac and cheese and a pretzel (which unfortunately was stale but the mustard side was very good). The service was good -- there was a large table that sat down right before us and perhaps they were short staffed because it took awhile for them to find us and take our order -- but it was fine. All and all, we spent too much for just a 'meh' meal.

Yelp
This is the Dutch baby! So bomb. I would suggest a bit more powdered sugar for that sweeter flavor (personal preference) my partner got the breakfast sandwich that had French toast as the bread and eggs on top (Benedict on the side) but it usually comes on the Sammie. We also had the espresso martinis, 100% suggest! The staff was attentive and friendly, the establishment was clean and has views of the lake! Try sitting by the fireplace inside, or outside! Also important, I'm on crutches and they have easy access to into the building and to seating avoiding stairs.

Chelsey S.

Yelp
Met some friends here on a Friday night...$21 for a burger. We understand that the cost of everything has gone up, however, the burger that we received at the table was a fraction of the burger we used to receive. Also a very small handful of fries. Restaurants cannot continue to keep raising prices AND shrinking food. It is noticeable, and I do not plan on returning.

Yelp
First there are some veg options, which was nice. Cauliflower wings (not sure how this is an entree?), Brussels, coconut curry, salads. The veg burger is a black bean burger so that was a hard pass for me. We started with a pretzel - hot fresh and tasty. Loved the mustard. For dinner I had the coconut curry which was surprisingly spicy and really tasty. Hubs had the ahi salad. We liked both of our dishes. Service was friendly, we sat in the bar area and for a Sunday night they weren't busy at all (though it WAS crazy hot outside). Didn't care for their blonde ale - thinking with IBU low it wouldn't be hoppy, but I found it more bitter than I like (should have ordered a porter probably). All in all solid, wish there was a better veg burger option though.

Yelp
The Pretzel. Wow. with the mustard seed dip, WOW. We have not been here in years, so we decided a nice lunch break was in order and wanted to try it out again. The staff was great, very attentive, never an empty glass. It was semi busy for a Saturdays lunch. The only real drawback is the prices have really creeped up there, we spent 60 dollars on two of us, with out an alcoholic beverages.

Yelp
Twice we ordered butterscotch pudding from this restaurant via Doordash. Both times, the restaurant got the order wrong. Then when they butterscotch pudding did arrive, it was absolutely THE WORST pudding I have ever had. The restaurant was not helpful and I would NEVER eat there or order from there ever again. Disgusting!

Yelp
Reservations for 6PM for party of 4. Arrived around 5:50 and seated promptly in a booth. The main restaurant was already busy busy busy! Noise level wasn't crazy, tables spaced out with just the right amount of leeway. Drinks served up fairly quick & dinner order taken. Super friendly & attentive service by all. House salad is tasty! Pears & sunflower seeds are a welcome change to most restaurants otherwise boring salad. The fried Brussels were crispy yet tender. But the star of the show? The juicy 12 oz prime rib, medium rare. There was no skimping on the rosemary and garlic crust. Packed full of flavor. I brought half of it up as leftovers! A side of broccolini & mashed potatoes also accompany the dish. Dessert was oooey, gooey goodness, hot and cold at the same time. Just the right amount of sweet. Margarita was a tasty change from my norm, no disappointments there. Will definitely be back... and will be smart to stick with making the reservation, just in case!

Yelp
The place is really reliable for great hearty meals. I had the ribeye for my rare treat of steak. It came perfectly prepared on a creamy ample bed of mashed potatoes with asparagus. Yummy. My husband had the fish and chips and was not completely pleased with dish. It was not at their usual high quality level, it was just ok. Too much breading and not enough fish. Wine with dinner for him and strawberry lemonade for me, both very nice. We had the amazing berry cobbler and that is a real treat. Home made and the real thing. We both had latte's with dessert. I have to say they need to step it up on the coffee. While the beans they use are flavorful and there is no complaint in that department, not heating the cup or saucer is not acceptable. Also, to give you a plastic cocktail straw to stir in your sugar cube was just not ok. They do make small espresso spoons and that would be better for use and ambience. Parking is close, ample and free. One of the best parts of this place is the atmosphere and that it is always well staffed. Crowded or not, you always get great service. Will be back as they use real ingredients and next to staying home and making it myself, this place does it all right.
google avatar

WW T.

Yelp
It's a great place to enjoy a steak and wine with colleagues. The atmosphere is casual, and the restaurant is family-owned. Although they made a mistake with our order, they quickly rectified it, so it wasn't a big deal. I would recommend it for a casual, relaxing lunch or dinner.

Yelp
After visiting their location in McMinnville a few times, we finally tried the Beaverton Golden Valley. The interior is about what you'd expect, cute and cozy and American pub-like. Booths could have been a little more comfortable and there was a draft, but nothing bad. Service was very good, we were seated right away and our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Food was decent, the onion rings were not anything special, the brussel sprouts appetizer was good if you like blue cheese! I ordered a side salad and it was good, if not very pretty. Hubby got the clam chowder and a Caesar salad and liked both. One of our friends got the sausage platter and that looked pretty good, no complaints from him! Overall nothing was exceptionally great but nothing was bad. It was an easy and acceptable lunch. Probably more three and a half stars but I'm giving them four because the beer was good.
google avatar

Suzanne W.

Yelp
Great service by Matt. Being out of town guests he made us feel welcome and spent time to give us several recommendations of where to go. Great place to check out!
google avatar

Angela V.

Yelp
There were 6 of us. Burger was dry and flavorless- my steak (filet) was perfectly cooked as rare, another steak at the table was asked to be medium rare but was rare and cold inside. The manager replaced it per our request for Mac and cheese which was very good. I will say however that although my steak was amazing, the seasonal veggies which ended up being some kind of horrible wilted or cooked salad and the fingerlings had no seasoning and tasted like vinegar. Hoping they see my review and change things up a bit.
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
Our party of 6 adults did not care for the beer selection or food. We were also disappointed that we couldn't sit outside because they couldn't seat 6 on their patio. I felt like they stuck us in the back and forgot about us.

Yelp
So not super impressed with menu. Burger was good but not sure worth the price. Service was great everyone was very friendly and fast. The place itself is very nice looking. My wife likes it alot. She love the Happy hour menu and beer. I would go back with her.

Harmony G.

Yelp
Needed a place between our homes and Golden Valley was right in the middle. We were more focused on visiting, so were not so picky. I had never heard of this place, so were flying blind. We were really pleased with our meals! One friend had the Ruben sandwich. A bit messy, but he said it was delicious! Another friend had the hamburger - again a winner. I had the junior burger with fries - and it really hit the spot. The service was attentive but no overbearing. Our food arrived really fast, but we were only the second party in that morning. The restaurant has cute décor and was really comfortable. If you are looking for a place conveniently on Hwy. 26, give Golden Valley Brewery a try!

Theresa L.

Yelp
Fantastic food! The candied bacon, OMG, so good. Likewise, the cornbeef sandwich had just enough kick to be exceptional. Ask for Brandi! Great service and great guidance on the choices. We aren't from here and will be back every time we're in town!! The bar is a work of art and the bartender, it's very early/slow since we're operating on East coast time, was cleaning all the bottles. Wonderful place!!!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
We're never disappointed with the food or service at GV. They clearly take care in what they serve, with fresh ingredients deliciously prepared. The staff is super responsive and friendly. It's definitely one of our go-to, favorite spots.
google avatar

Sue G.

Yelp
The food and service here are fantastic! I love their monthly specials and it is a great local hangout.
google avatar

R B.

Yelp
Yeah, it was fine. Local to the hotel. The beer was good. The service was good. I had the Korean ribs. They were just okay. They weren't bad, just meh. Could have had more flavor. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I didn't care for the kimchi slaw. I like kimchi and I like slaw. This just didn't work. It's not a bad place. I'd go back, but it's not 5 star amazing.
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
Nice server and decent ambiance/location and plenty of parking but wow - insane prices for what you get. $23 for a Carl's jr tier burger with a small serving of fries Lol. The burger was so small the dude behind us demanded to know if it was the "junior happy hour size" he was so shocked. Their beer is average at best and overall just avoid this place at all costs unless you're desperate
google avatar

Tori H.

Yelp
Good quality food that comes with a price. I ordered the pulled pork nachos which is a staple for me at any restaurant. The meats were juicy and flavorful. The additional toppings, specifically the salsa blend lacked flavor. But overall still happy with my order! HUGE PORTIONS, could feed at least 3 people!
google avatar

Yelp
My last review was 9 years ago. A LOT has happened since then. I have been eating here many, many times since then and I still have not had their dry aged steaks. On today's menu ribeye is 45 and new York is 40. Maybe that's holding me back. Anyway, I have had many items on the current menu and randomly many specials. Here is a short list of regular items: Baked Mac & Cheese - Blasting Cheesiness Alaskan cod fish & chips - Awesome pan roasted Salmon - sensational Not yo mama's meatloaf - mighty good POT ROAST - possibly perfect House ground asr beef Chili - Clearly very Cool. Service is spot on. Table service always polite, highly interested in your experience and very friendly. Good crew! Facilities: lots of places to sit including outside, lots of windows even in the bar. Good music in the background not to loud and not to soft. Location: right off the 26 but there is not a lot of freeway noise even outside. Lots of parking. BEER! A good range of their wonderful brews from pale ale to stouts, along with a full bar. Stay away from the Bourbon Aged Panther - It's All Mine, don't touch any, I want it all for myself.

Yelp
Enjoyed the Beaverton Blonde, a lighter beer...so good I had 2. Started with candied pepper bacon (6 slices), good but a bit greasy. Ordered a half rack of ribs. A bit too much pepper for me. Ordered a side of BBQ sauce but was sweet (plum?) and peppery; not a fan. Came with fries (delicious) and also a red cabbage/red onion cole slaw. Boyfriend had the fish and chips. Although the fish was heavily battered, he said it was a light batter. He enjoyed it.

Yelp
We had not been to GVB in a long long time. It is 5 minutes from home. They discontinued brunch, then Covid, then I got sick and was doing chemo. But I am feeling better and eating a little better so when we looked at another brewpub's yelp and found the reviews had dropped we thought we would get our takeout here. My personal door dasher/ minion picked up the food. They were bringing it to the front right as he arrived. The place was packed. What we got: Nachos- all the ingredients arrived packed separately, there was no guac, no cheese melted on the chips, and the queso was super salty. All the ingredients were the wrong temp -even after assembling it and heating it in the microwave, Minion was disappointed. We have gotten nachos for pickup pre-assembled before that were just fine, so you can't blame it on that , GVB. My ABLT - it was ok, but icy cold as were my sweet potato fries. The ingredients were nice, the avocado was perfect, the sandwich overall tasted fine, but it was not warm. So, it was edible, on time, a little expensive, and not amazing. Adequate. Not sure we would return.
google avatar

Nancy Z.

Yelp
Amazing... out of this world. The flavor is spot on. They don't always have the Pot Roast but If it there it's a must order.
google avatar

Melodie P.

Yelp
We ordered salads. The wedge salad was butter lettuce with a gob of dressing. There was 2 small tomatoes halved and a few sprinkles of bacon. The butter lettuce was only a few leaves. My partner order a Caesar salad. Obvious from a bag as the lettuce was browned and nothing special just a bunch of dressing and small croutons. NO BREAD - only a diet coke was added. The bill came to nearly 40 bucks!! oh don't forget the tip! The waitress was kind! Not going back

Chris R.

Yelp
This place was a true disappointment. I haven't been in for a few years, but my previous experiences were always pretty good. First of all, the server lacked knowledge of the entire menu and never refilled our drinks. The drinks are outrageously overpriced at $4.50 for a fountain soda and $8.50 for a pint of beer. The food is also overpriced for the lack of flavor each dish has. The bar area seemed to have an ok ambience, however we were one of the only tables in the dining room at 6pm on a Saturday night and it felt very dingy. Overall, I would not recommend this place. You are better off going to an Applebees...

B M.

Yelp
Server didn't come and check on us at all. 2 of the sodas that were ordered didn't ever make it to the table. We both ordered fish and chips and both of us got raw fish and very under cooked gooey batter. The outside was barely even crisp. Such a bummer. This was my 2nd visit to Golden Valley Brewery and the 2nd time I was disappointed. Won't be back.

Scott B S.

Yelp
The food and service was excellent. Plenty of choice in the menu. I didn't try the beers however there was a really good selection offered.
google avatar

Simon B.

Yelp
Great local place. Beer is good. Food is fine. Dining room has a family, neighborhood vibe, totally fine for families with kids. Bar area is great for adult groups or just hanging out at the bar or a booth. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Shane S.

Yelp
When: Mon. Oct 10th 5:00 pm; Party of 2 Adults The main reason for choosing GVB was its close location to our hotel. Our expectations were minimal at best, expecting "normal" bar food and OK service at best...My wife and I left with an honest WOW experience and look forward to returning when visiting the area in the future. We were greeted by a cheerful hostess who sat us promptly without any pretentiousness, that we normally would find, at the Thirsty Lion at Washington Square...Our server JT was cheerful with a subtle humor, that made our dining experience a great one. Even the bar runner and food runner were professional & courteous when bringing our drinks & food respectively... A definite must try as a starter, would have to be the Spent Grain Pretzel, it comes to your table piping hot and more than enough to share with 2 to 4 guests. My wife ordered the GVB Junior Burger with a side Caesar...since it was still happy hour, the burger was discounted $2.50 off the regular menu price of $12.00. My wife raved about the quality of the beef and deliciousness of the potato burger bun... Since I wanted some sort of home cooking or comfort food and I choose the Not yo' Mama's Meatloaf with fingerling potatoes and steamed broccolini. It was hearty and satisfying, but I still found a way to make room for dessert...To Go that is, JT recommended the Homemade Oregon Berry Cobbler and it was a definite home run...

Yelp
Walked in on Valentine's Day with my wife, hoping to get a table without a reservation. We were seated in the bar at a high top with very uncomfortable stools. When asked if we could sit at a table we were told they were reserved. Very understandable, except for the fact that there were 5 tables and 1 booth completely empty from the time we got there to the time we left. Also, expect to pay a pretty penny. For example, as you can see from my pic, they charge $12 a glass for wine that costs $14 for a bottle at the store. Now THAT is ridiculous!

Sue B.

Yelp
Lots of noise. Very expensive and small portions. $8.50 beer is crazy. $18 burger the size of a cookie and 5 onion rings seems a little steep.
google avatar

Tammy Y.

Yelp
We stopped on a whim because we were at the place next door. I had the cranberry kiss, Steve had the Octoberfest Lager. We ordered strictly off the happy hour menu. The house salad was odd. The flatbread was average. The stand outs were the steak bits and the baby back ribs. The service was good. The restaurant was clean and seemed very organized. The food was very quick. The beer selection was heavy on the IPAs. The cocktails were not the usuals but what I had was good and I'd order it again.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I'm so-so on their beer selection, but the food menu keeps improving. Today I enjoyed a BIG portion pork schnitzel: so good! Other than the version at Stammtisch, this might be my favorite. I was mixed on one of their creative beers: golden blond mixed with Pinot grapes served in a snifter glass.

Mary S.

Yelp
Prompt service, great steak salad, fish and chips yummy. Exceptional selection of beer on tap

Alix U.

Yelp
Food was really, really bad. Like, I couldn't eat it bad. I had the Cobb salad, how can you screw that up? They found a way. I wouldn't return.

Yelp
Disappointing meals! Disastrous Cocktail! Thanksgiving: Meals contained far too many common ingredients,' side veggies was same as the soup, which had a strange taste/tanginess that destroyed the flavour profile (yogurt perhaps?) Salmon was over cooked with an overly sweet sauce. Prime Rib tasted good but my friend's Prime Rib was cut nicely with a proper portion, whereas mine looked like it was cut with a chainsaw by a blind person, and was very crooked and way under portioned. Horseradish sauce had less flavour than Arby's Horsey sauce. The Turkey had a tough texture and was chewy rather than supple and tasty, gravy had little flavour... disappointing. I ordered an Old Fashion to drink and it had enough bitters in it to choke a bear, I sent it back and the bar tender threw a tizzy fit and threw a bottle so hard that it exploded with an unnerving sound. I eventually received a replacement that was meh... unfortunately all the employees seem to live in fear of this man! I was offered no apology and my mis-mixed cocktail caused an obvious disturbance in the entire dining room. We have eaten at this restaurant and the one in McMinnville for years and we all were very unimpressed with our experience! The food servers were wonderful (despite their obvious intimidation from the bar tender) and were it not for them, it would have been a total loss! My opinion as a chef and former owner of several restaurants, there's a staffing issue!

Yelp
Great Service and Great Beer (Love the Coffee Stout). Best Burger EVER. The lamb burger with the mint-tomato jelly and aioli was amazing!! Will be back when I come through this way again.

Yelp
One of our go to places, best BL&AT on the planet, excellent menu, delicious food, the service is impeccable, restaurant always clean, restrooms are lovely - always stocked and clean. Plus, their ESB IS the BEST red beer anywhere!!
