"Classic diner breakfasts await at this Lakewood staple, where folks have eaten since 1980. Founder Virgil Sanchez, Sr. died in 2017, but his family keeps the grill going. Be sure to try the John Wayne, a hangover-alleviating concoction of eggs, cheese, salsa, hash browns, bacon, and tortillas." - Eater Staff

"Gold Rush rose to the top of Dallas’ favorite greasy-spoons, featuring breakfast standbys with Tex-Mex influences like huevos rancheros or one of its best selling dishes, The John Wayne, with eggs, bacon, salsa, and cheddar cheese. The eatery is well-loved, as evidenced by its 4.7 star rating on Facebook and the reportedly huge customer turnout at Sanchez’s funeral. Positive reviews verbalize what many Dallasites feel makes the place so special. “The customers range in age from the 30s to the 80s, and they have all been coming here for decades. I bet some of these folks would vote for Gold Rush to be their last meal on earth,” one commenter wrote in his five-star review. “You don’t get more of a comfort feel from a restaurant than this. It just puts a smile on your face. Their food is just right and their heart and hospitality are as big as Texas.”" - Alaena Hostetter

Google
Very small restaurant but the food was very good and classic. I got the steak and eggs and added a side of ham. The steak was pretty good for a $14 value. The ham was amazing, most definitely savory and I loved the char on it. For the amount of food I was heavily satisfied with the price.

Google
I love this restaurant! The food is terrific when you go there. Please try John Wayne. I’m not a big fan of salsa, but this place's salsa is impressive. The cozy and comfy restaurant also!!! Don’t forget to get the waffle!! The price is reasonable too. Thanks for the good food! I will come back again.

Google
The food was delicious! I shared with our server, Tony, that I liked spicy food and let him order for me. Ended up with a John Wayne, over medium and a bottle of Melinda's Trinidad Moruga Scorpion sauce. It didn't disappoint! Love having the server order when visiting somewhere different because I get to experience something different. This was a great choice!

One of the heart of East Dallas jewels! As soon as you step inside you will feel the warmth and hear a hello! Then seat yourself - tables or one of the deliciously old school vinyl seat wrapped booths. George, owner and chief welcomer is sure to be swiftly at your spot, looking you in the eye and sincerely asking how your day is rolling. The eggs anyway you want, just right greasy sausage Patty's always hit the spot. Don't miss there John Wayne! Music and movies add to the delicious funky diner vibe.

Google
Goldrush Cafe delivers an old school atmosphere of a small town diner. The people are friendly and the food is affordable. I ordered the Reuben Sandwich and it tastes delicious. The place is always packed during lunchtime so seating will be difficult to find. Also, the bathroom is clean. I love the environment and I will definitely be returning!

Google
We went Thursday morning around 11a.m. it got pretty active at that time. It's a family run restaurant with Virgil/Mark working hard in the kitchen and George working just as hard taking orders and working the register. Because is so good several folks walked in and stood waiting for a much sought after spot. I ordered the John Wayne which has hash browns, sunny side eggs bacon and salsa piled into a beautiful crescendo. It's much a throwback spot in clouding a John Wayne velvet painting on the wall. Tell them Lilia sent you.

Google
Wow! Have never seen this place before. I had the Chicken Fried Steak, and I will rank it as the 2nd best in Dallas! Even the Texas Toast was amazing. We will be back!

Google
I found this little gem of a Cafe running errands across the street. Now that I have found it I'm definitely going to come back. Judging by how crowded it was when I got there and the whole time I was there it seems I'm late to the party on this place. It's hard to mess up bacon, eggs n hash browns but I've seen it done before. My eggs were perfectly overeasy, thick cut bacon done just right and finally a cook that understands "well done/twice fried or extra crispy hashbrowns" The coffee kept coming and was fresh and flavorful. The best part? My waitress was a beautiful, super friendly, and personable young lady. She was always smiling/laughing while making small talk with everyone she came into contact with. I'm definitely saving this place to my favorites list. I shall return and keep up the great work!!

Yelp
Good food, great service. Got in right away and had great coffee within a minute. A mom and pop place that is a Dallas gem.

Yelp
This was my first visit here and I must say it lives up to it's reputation. Since I and my family were sitting near the door I wasn't able to take in the full ambiance of the place but from what I saw I'd say "quirky " with a nod to Elvis. The food was good diner fare and the servings were generous. I had the Taco Omelett. Topped with a generous amount of cheese, the filling was well seasoned taco meat. I opted for the refried beans and toast. Delicious and filling. Others had the eggs, sausage, hash browns, and biscuit And a pancake. The eggs were beautifully sunny side up. The biscuits looked light and fluffy. Pancakes came with butter and a shot glass of syrup. Service was unobtrusive and efficient. And the place was packed with folks waiting outside. Parking can be tight in front. I'm not sure about other parking options. The Gold Rush Cafe's reputation is well earned. I'll be back.

Yelp
This place is like a Texas version of Luke's Diner from the Gilmore Girls. It's homey, loved by the community and the food speaks for itself I ordered the chicken fried steak. It was perfectly seasoned. The gravy was very tasty. I didn't order coffee but my friends did and the staff was very attentive when it came to refills. If ever in Dallas, I'll be sure to come back. Thank you for the energy boost Goldrush!

Yelp
Embarrassed it took me so long to try this place but it's great for breakfast. Classic diner treats (and they have beer/wine!). Expect to wait but it's worth it.

John W.

Yelp
Came here in the morning looking for a quality breakfast experience and was definitely left satisfied! The service here was great and the ambience, especially if you're from Dallas, was awesome. They have plenty of memorabilia to gaze upon from Dallas sports teams to John Wayne. They really do have a little bit of everything. Their menu is exciting and fun to look through as they have tons of breakfast options to pick from. The names of some of their dishes are interesting too as one is literally named after John Wayne himself. I had the corn beef and hash with eggs over easy. It also came with hash browns and a choice of grits, toast, or English muffins. Overall, I definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice hole in the wall breakfast joint in the Lakewood area of Dallas!

Yelp
Waited 10 minutes and no ONE acknowledged our presence. Place was not even busy. Workers glanced at us and just kept on with their day. We did not "blend" with the crowd there, i am really hoping that was not the case. Either-way, will not be back. Very dehumanizing experience.

Laura O.

Yelp
wonderful food, staff and ambiance. cheap food that's never disappointing. lots of marilyn and elvis regalía

Carol S.

Yelp
The pumpkin pancakes are a must.coffee was great and never ending, great service friendly neighborhood vibe.

Yelp
Update: The Gold Rush now has their beer and wine license and can not allow for BYOB. The last time I walked in, I saw new beer and wine glasses and bottles, confirmed it with the manager. It was one of my favorite places to bring in wine with my burger, but no more.

Jessica A.

Yelp
I have been coming here with my boyfriend for about 7-8 years and it's always wonderful service and delicious food . Anything you order you'll love our favorites id the steak and eggs and chicken fry steak .

Bob Z.

Yelp
What a staple in the community. Been going here for years now. I was rd there after being away for a couple of years. It was like I was away. The food was still on the money and maybe even better. George and the crew were on point as usual. The place looked just like it always had. Cozy. I recommend.

Vivian L.

Yelp
I was looking for a place nearby where I was at the time in Dallas and this popped up as a great breakfast place. I would have to agree. With a nice selection on the menu, my meal was great, the service was great and a nice atmosphere.

Payton W.

Yelp
The most amazing hole in the wall restaurant I've found in Dallas! The service is excellent. Their food is what makes it special though!

Leah M.

Yelp
Food was hot and delicious. It really hit the spot. Not the nicest decor, but I didn't go for that. The staff visited with the regulars. Everyone seemed friendly.

Maria H.

Yelp
The place is small and there was a wait line soon after being seated, the food was quite good and priced reasonable. You'll be pleasantly surprised but expect to wait for a table if you're coming after 9 AM.

Rachel R.

Yelp
This place is walking distance from my house, so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did! I had pancakes with eggs, sausage, and hashbrowns. My spouse has the chicken friend steak. We both were highly pleased with our food. I actually liked his better. The only thing I'd change is for them to have biscuits and gravy on the menu. They have both biscuits and gravy, so I'm sure they would have served me some if I would have asked!

Travis S.

Yelp
A staple in Lakewood for years past and years to come. If you don't get here early enough on the weekends you will find yourself waiting 20 min outside for a small table to open up. Worth the wait. Once you step through the doors you go back in time to a simpler place where things are fun and easy. Great coffee to start. Read the paper. The John Wayne is my go to order with the salsa on the side. A quick and easy hangover cure everything you don't get to eat with your fork, well wrap that bitch up in the tortilla that is still crispy sitting on at the bottom of your grub just waiting to make you happy. I've also had the burger here and it was solid. An old school Kitchen like this can not do any wrong in my book. All the decor is very interesting and has roots to Dallas past. Take a trip back in time with the very fair prices as well!

Angie C.

Yelp
First off...... the care and family feel you get at this place is AWESOME. If you're a frequent they know you. They talk to you like family. THEY are a family. EVERYONE is extremely nice. Clean. Fast. THE FOOD. OMG. the food. BEST. PANCAKES YOU WILL. EVER. EAT! that's how I found the place. I told my friend where can we go to get the best pancakes. He took me here. I love the food. Honestly. I always eat just the breakfast food because their are many options they will make it exactly as you like it...... they have little newspapers to read and little magazines (I love that stuff). Awesome vintage records looking menus. I took my daughter there (she does not like to go out to restaurants) she's 15. She fell in love. We go every time she is here. Took my dad and stepdad from Cleveland oh. They won't quit talking about it. Love love love. They have T-shirts (bought some for my parents and they were so excited. ). Thank you thank you for your service. You're hard work and your kindness. I see how hard all of you work and I know it's not easy.

Stephen W.

Yelp
We popped in here for a late breakfast/late lunch on a Sunday and nabbed the last table. The interior is modest and I guess funky. Based on previous reviews I had it bookmarked, although I must say I don't really get the hype. Our experience was ok but certainly nothing outstanding. I got the jalapeño burger and after a while a burger was served but not the one I ordered. So the waitress suggested I keep the original plate and eat the tots while she asked the kitchen to do my order correctly. I said ok and asked for ketchup for the tots but was given three small packs which was not nearly enough. When the correct order finally came, it was fine but nothing special. It was juicy but the meat had not been seasoned. The wife got the corned beef hash that comes with eggs and a waffle on the side. The hash is made from canned corned beef. The eggs were cooked properly and the biscuits were good. But the waffle was too dense and not good at all so it found its way to the trash when we got home. Service was friendly and efficient.

Mark S.

Yelp
Been coming here for years (25) good standard fare and really good service. Enjoyed the scratch biscuits

Carolyn H.

Yelp
I mean-- what can you say to 2 ample meals and 2 beverages for under $20.00? This is a regular old, local-yokel, unassuming place hiding in a small strip of businesses. It's like you stepped off of the sidewalk and back in time about 20 or 40 years (I doubt the place has changed much in décor or menu options in that time. And the prices haven't changed much, either!) Feeling no-frills, and like not dressing up, and like eating on-the-cheap? This is your place.

Monie H.

Yelp
This is a tiny place, so get here early if you're coming for weekend breakfast like the hubs and I did. The staff is very friendly and attentive, even though the cafe was always full (it's teeny tiny). There was always a line of people waiting near the door and outside the door - - which was distracting, but necessary due to the limited space. Our breakfasts were reasonably priced. The food (only speaking to breakfast) was OK. I had waffles, eggs, and sausage patties. The patties were definitely the star of my plate, as they were well seasoned and not salty. The waffle was warm and not crisp on the outside. My husband got the pork chops and eggs with biscuits. The chops were beautifully thinly cut, but overcooked, so they dried out. The biscuits were pretty, but not light and fluffy as they looked. The biscuits and waffles definitely lacked flavor. We only had breakfast here and I'd certainly pick this place over a chain (i.e. Dennys, etc), but I'd try lunch or dinner next time rather than breakfast.

Terry B.

Yelp
Service was slow food was over cooked I won't be back just wasn't fun I'm always looking for something new but not this day

Michelle T.

Yelp
The Gold Rush is a true gem in the Dallas Breakfast landscape. The fare is exactly how I would hope good diner food would taste. I typically stick to the breakfast items, but I've tried a few of the lunch plates and have not been disappointed. I highly recommend the waffles, which can be ordered ala carte. The Gold Rush uses real butter, which may seem like a small detail, but to me carries a lot of weight and enhances what are already amazing pancakes and waffles. The eggs, bacon and hash browns are also praiseworthy. The restaurant can get crowded at times, so you may have to wait. There are only about 2 chairs dedicated as a "wait" area, so most often when waiting for a table to open up, you may find yourself waiting (whilst standing) in the entrance way. But, it's definitely worth it, and on my longest waits, I would say they've never exceeded more than 15 minutes. Of course, I have never been during peak breakfast times as I am a notoriously late riser due to my nocturnal nature. Great food though- if you are craving delicious breakfast foods without corners being cut at a reasonable price, this is the go-to place in Lakewood.

Conner N.

Yelp
Food was amazing!! Classic cafe with wonderful service! Would recommend to anyone looking for a great breakfast or lunch!

Ben M.

Yelp
Gold Rush cafe has been a favorite of mine for the past couple of years. They have great prices, amazing food, and a cozy atmosphere. Service is even better!

Shannon M.

Yelp
This place is a literal greasy spoon, with a maze of tables packed into a small strip mall space. Adding to the confusion is the seat yourself situation. My meal (hash browns, biscuits and bacon) were fine: not great, not bad. Same goes for our server. There's a note of whimsy in the Elvis-themed ladies room. Overall, an average breakfast choice.

Mikayla L.

Yelp
Food is always fast and amazing. The pretty lady in the doc martins is always the nicest, I think her name is Jennifer? Not to certain. Anyways. 10/10 love this little slice of paradise.

Adam C.

Yelp
It was busy when we walked and now I know why. Talk about good big food on the cheap. I had the number 1. The eggs aren't as hard as requested but that's alright. All good. Service could have been quicker but to be honest, the Australian open was on so it was good. Their menu is pretty cool.

Phillip M.

Yelp
I have been coming here since the late 80s. Not much has changed. The owner, George is still the guy who waits on me mostly. He is a great guy and the big reason many people are loyal to this place. I come here mainly for breakfast and it's always great and very reasonable. This is one of those rare places where you'll hear old hippies discuss politics next to a tatted up body builder next to a business man next to an older couple in their 80s. Its more than the food; its a community. I love this place. Highly recommended.

Tony G.

Yelp
Was excited to come here. They did not disappoint. Good prices and good food. I will be back.

Laura O.

Yelp
I don't know what I would do without the Gold Rush Cafe! Their breakfast is always just what the doctor ordered. If you want lunch instead, the cheeseburger w tator tots is simply perfection. And I love how the place isn't overpriced like so many places are in Dallas these days. Thanks for keeping it real, Gold Rush! We love you!

Junee B.

Yelp
Top notch, welcoming and outstanding little big world this cafe has imprinted me with. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this place , period. I had the famous "John Wayne" breakfast dish with a cup of OJ because duh.. you can never go wrong with simplicity. The staff seems .... friendly and not too serious (in a good way, humorous even) .. a very good friend chose this place and I wouldn't have it any other way . Plus, new sites . !!!!!!

Mike L.

Yelp
We found this place on a whim and I'm so glad we did! This is a small, but substantial place for the perfect breakfast, brunch or lunch/dinner meal. Breakfast is served all day and the food is not only presented well on the plate, but wow does it taste great. This place has soul and a heart and you can tell...from the numerous awards and recognitions on the wall, the memorabilia and the people that work there. Overall, this is a GREAT place to try! Enjoy.

Drew J.

Yelp
Very nice home style cooked cafe. I accident happened to run open this cafe one day and would recommend it. Would eat there again. Service was fast and good.

Victoria G.

Yelp
This is our favorite brunch spot around! Try the John Wayne!

Sandra ..

Yelp
First time here and definitely won't be the last! Breakfast is your basic yet well made eggs, hash and bacon! Biscuits are fluffy and the waffles had the perfect outer golden crisp, fluffy inside. Anything under $20 for two with a happy belly after is what I call a deal! Also the staff and owner are a pretty coool crew..now, nap time. :)

Ray F.

Yelp
The best breakfast in Dallas! Quaint place with a belly filling menu to make sure you'll need to work out later! Staf is fantastic only to be topped by great food. This place makes breakfast the way it should be, good hot, filling and with a smile. It isn't a large place, but I've never had to wait. Crowd seems to always be regulars. PLUS... great price. Better than the big places you have to wait in line!

Donnie Z.

Yelp
This is a great spot. Love the hole in the walls! Breakfast was perfect long with the coffee! We will be back!

Reagan B.

Yelp
Hands down best restaurant in Dallas. Great food great service and great prices which is hard to find around here! Definitely recommend the John Wayne or the Cheeseburger

Benjamin N.

Yelp
This is the sort of diner you want to grab a good hearty breakfast at. The place is small and probably hasn't been renovated in years; they have a mix of booths and tables, the staff is nice, and the food is decent except for the cornbeef hash... At new breakfast places I always like to compare the hash and unfortunately, the hash here is from a can and a hard pass.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Nice comfortable little spot for breakfast. Standard breakfast classics with a few tex-mex options thrown in. We came here after there was a line at Benny's Bagels and glad we discovered the spot. Service was good despite how busy they were, they did a good job of getting people in and out such a small spot.

Barry J.

Yelp
How this is 4 stars i have no idea. Food is average. Burgers are okay, eggs are okay. Usual diner. When you walk in seat yourself. For some reason employees let people walk and stand in the doorway until they see a dirty table open for 10 mins. Also enjoy seating yourseld at the dinner table while the waitress wipes the crumbs in your lap. Dont mind the mold on the wall or ceiling. And if you want to pay and leave you have to stand at the cashier for five minutes. Youre lucky if you can pay and leave under 10 mins. If the staff looks like they hate... they probably do. And if you wanna throw up look behind the cashier and see where they keep the ice

jessica c.

Yelp
Best!!!! No more Words Needed!!! If you're a local... ya.. know it's legit. Best services in town. Great food and price.. is unbeatable.

Ashley M.

Yelp
Best little cafe in Lakewood. Food is great service is hospitable! Definitely coming back

Tonya S.

Yelp
love this place!! it's small so you got to get there , the prices cant beat 10 bucks for steak and eggs great after a night of partying if you catch what I mean !!! it's close by parking sucks it's in a lil strip mall but the food will make u forget about the parking and sometimes there is a line outside the door , that should tell you something!

Ben F.

Yelp
It's okay breakfast but what I really love is the chicken fried steak and eggs ! One of the best chicken fried steaks, in the DFW area , better than Norma's . Great family run business, real food , friendly atmosphere.

Kay A.

Yelp
Decent breakfast place. It's a hole in a wall joint, with outdated decor but the food is pretty good. I got a veggie omelet, with hashbrowns and biscuit.

Allison F.

Yelp
Line out the door for Sunday morning breakfast. Coupled with the great reviews, I expected some pretty good food. We waited quite a while for service. Our waitress didn't know anything about the menu- she was unable to answer really any question. "Are the beans vegetarian?". Blank stare and idk. "What's in the Greek omelette?". "I don't know". Perhaps you could go ask? After asking another waitress who didn't know either, the answer returned from the kitchen: feta cheese and nothing else. So I settled on a Belgian waffle which didn't have much taste and the texture indicated it had perhaps been sitting around for quite a while. It was strangely dense. My boyfriend got the 'John Wayne' which lacked in flavor and was wholly unimpressive. BF had to get his own coffee refill. Upon finishing our meal, we waited for a bill with customers lined up out the door. We asked the waitress for the check, and were told to pay up front. The cashier didn't have our check either, and asked us to recite what we had. Unimpressed.

Yelp
In 2018 we moved to Dallas as our son lived there, we were retired and wanted to spend some quality time with him. To that end, our son introduced us to the diamond in the rough, Gold Rush Cafe off of Skillman and Oram streets in Dallas Texas. George the owner~operator has kept this wonderful mom & pop business serving some of the coolest folks in Dallas for over 40 years, what an amazing testimony to great food for a great price owned by a great man. GRC has served scores of folks and George knows all their names and stories. My son and I more than bonded there we became close. George knew that my son would be late, so he served the best coffee ever and we shared a laugh or two while I waited. George knew what we would order as soon as we sat down, ( he always double checked with us) but we rarely changed. George became a one-day a week best friend. GRC and George have survived ton of tough times, because, if you have been there once, you will go back ~ I promise. For your own sake ~ go.
