Detroit’s Best Delis | Eater Detroit

"Three-quarters of a century old Italian sub shop Gonella’s is situated in the Oakwood Heights area of Southwest Detroit. It maintains a loyal following for its deli sandwiches stacked with layer upon layer of meats and cheeses. Everything is topped with shredded lettuce and tomato. Customers can also pickup sides of marinated olives, mushrooms, pasta salad, and even cannoli." - Danny Palumbo

Tried Gonella’s for the first time and went with the smoked turkey sandwich, fully loaded. The ingredients were super fresh and the turkey had nice flavor, but overall it didn’t leave a lasting impression. Even the sauce didn’t pop like I hoped. That said, it’s a good quality sandwich and a full meal (chips + water) for just $10.76… can’t be mad at that.

Google
Detroit's BEST Sub. I'm a big guy, and Italian, I know my my way around some food. This is THE best Italian sub I've ever had, so authentic and absolutely delicious. Saw it on ChowDownDetroit, had to try, and so happy I did. The team was great, owner was so dang nice. Get the 8-Layer, add Banana Peppers 🤌🏼🇮🇹

Google
DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY. They prepare your subs on a dirty metal surface with no paper underneath. There is lettuce and a bunch of other clutter around it too. The I saw them wipe the knife on the metal surface to remove what was on it then wiped it off with sub wrapping paper instead of washing it properly. Subs are straight, onions could use an ice bath to take away the harshness.

Can’t go wrong with a pit stop here for lunch. Quality ingredients turn an ordinary deli sandwich into extraordinary. There are several chips and pasta salads to choose from for sides. You can also buy pasta noodles and other Italian ingredients here as well. The homemade tuna salad is my favorite. I’ve seen them making platters and platters of sandwiches for catering orders as well.

The elder gentleman at the register is a sweetheart, as is the middle-aged man who works behind the deli counter. The young girls behind the deli counter? WHEW! They're some of the nastiest, most unprofessional and generally unpleasant individuals I've ever met in my life. They test your patience and that's all I'll say about that. The sandwiches aren't that good. This shop uses what I call bubble meat -- deli meat that's so processed that it doesn't resemble the meat it is in any way. I can't deal with that texture at all, so this place is a big no for me. Prices are fair. I got a turkey sub with American and pepper jack cheeses; it had a lot of meat (which only made me gag even more because I don't like that "bubble meat); the sandwich was $8.35. Other reviews that allude to the cleanliness of the sandwich station, are somewhat accurate. It was covered in lettuce. That didn't really bother me though because it was otherwise clean, it was lunch and they were busy AND the surface is only used for sandwiches from what I can tell. I do love the bread they use. If you're not particular about lunch meat, then you'll love this place. I

I tried Gonella's Redford for the first time today. Hands down the best sandwich I've tried in a long time. We ordered a turkey, Italian and chicken salad sandwich. I loved all three. The rolls, lunchmeat and toppings, all fresh. The staff was quick to help and friendly. I look forward to my next trip to Gonella's.

Sometimes a good Italian sub is what I am craving and that is what brought me to Gonella’s for lunch last Saturday. The store is easy to find just off Telegraph in Redford and parking seemed to be sufficient. I got an 8 layer Italian on the hard(outside) roll as well as 6 pepper poppers and a towne club soda. My bill was just under $20. The sub was exactly what I expected and was seeking. Stacked meats, plentiful veggies with a good dressing on a nice roll. The poppers were absolutely delicious as well. Pricey, but delicious. I think they probably work out to about $1.20/each and they are a la carte so get one or ten(I would lean towards the latter and green ones - but both are fuego) I will definitely be back and may stray to try and create your own sandwich and try the soft bread next time as it may soak up the dressing better - although this would require a prompt consumption and not great to go. Anyways check out Gonella’s if you want a classic Italian sub. Also, they are not just a sub shop and offer all sorts of cold deli selections(meat/cheese/salads) and a small assortment of Italian grocery items. Great selection of craft and local sodas.

Yelp
Saw a review on YouTube and had to try this spot. It was exactly what I expected. Fast and friendly service. Awesome deli counter and nice store. Had a 12-layer original Italian sub. It was amazing. This is a Detroit tradition that I didn't know about until yesterday. Glad I saw that video. Check it out.

Yelp
4/4.5 The Italian is so good, I have yet to try other sandwiches. Hard roll over soft. Thank me later. Love a place like this over corporate sub shops any day. They run out of rolls sometimes, especially hard. Might want to call and check.

Yelp
Places like this are why I know the state of Michigan to have awful food offerings and absolutely no taste or standards. These subs were mediocre on a good day. They're bland, mostly flavorless, needlessly messy, and are something any kid could make better on his own with a trip to the grocery store. Nothing about them can't be easily replicated. I once gave this place a 3/5 - a bit better than Subway, but with less zip and neatness. Things have somehow gotten way worse since it opened up. This place is now as much of a dump as the city it's located in. The meats used to be cut fresh for every sandwich, which was one of the major selling points. Now, they preslice meats and have trays of them to grab from. One of few edges are lost to a place people who come here would probably mock."Everything" doesn't mean what it used to either. You used to get mustard, mayo, a choice of pepper...now, you get Italian dressing and peppers if you remember to ask and specify which you want. Hard rolls were always sold out fast, but now I think they stopped bothering and just don't have them a lot of days. I haven't trusted the deli items for about a year now. They just seemed off to me. Once great, now kind of bleh. It seemed like they made them and just kept them around for a few days to a week to save on costs. I've now seen confirmation in the form of "packed on" dates being for days that haven't even happened yet. It's so fresh it's not even made yet, and won't be for another two weeks. Lucky you, future boy. The sub making area is also a mess. The counter is drenched in salad and other ingredients, and so is the floor. These aren't just gripes but are signs the food isn't actually sanitary or safe to eat. There used to be a woman that worked here who was great at fixing up orders and generally being a pleasure to interact with. She seems to have left. Good for her. The owner is cool, but he can't do it all alone. If you want some Uncle Ray's chips or other convenience store items it may still be worth a stop, but I can't recommend anything else. Location: 1* Convenience: 3* Service: 1* (4* for previous worker and owner) Product/quality: 1* Aesthetics: 2*

Yelp
It's not just a sub shop, but if it was, it would be the best quality sub at the best price. My family of 5 hungry men love their classic Italian sub with quality meats, thinly sliced lettuce, tomatoes, & onions but they say the best part is the family secret sauce recipe. Whether regular or spicy, you'll want the recipe & spend too much time trying to figure out what's in it. The shop is a pleasant surprise from the moment you enter & smell the fresh ingredients to seeing the large gourmet olive bar, the specialty chips, pretzels, Italian cookies, cakes, homemade cannoli & pasta salads. I was thankful they were so fast making the subs. I could do a lot of cc damage given too much time.

Yelp
I ordered the standard 8 inch Italian, no cheese sub banana peppers. I ordered one for myself and someone else. I ordered over the phone because it was lunch and I was expecting a wait. There was no wait. At all. And I'm shocked. Those sandwiches were so good!!! $7.50 each and I could only finish half. The store is cute and looked like a typical Italian sandwich shop or deli. Lots of jars of pickled veggies, breads, cookies, chips... I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Continue to eat at the originally Gonella's. Their Italian subs are unbelievable. Lots of fresh sides, desserts, chips and drink options. The owner is personable. Been frequenting this place for years now. A really great lunch that is fast and fresh. Or don't feel like cooking? Bring home some subs for dinner.

Yelp
This is the place you wanna go if you want a good Italian sub without tearing a hole in your pockets...... The place is clean and the workers are always helping.... I try to make it here at least once a month....

Yelp
I'm not going to be negative about this review. The service and ambience was well received. However, there's a few things that can be improved. My wife and I saw some of the reviews, and believed that it would be worth the drive for a good sandwich. We called ahead and placed our order, specifically asking for a customized sandwich. When we arrived 20 minutes later, we discovered that they hadn't started the sandwich's yet. I was not in a hurry, so I placed the order again, and asked that they take their time and not rush. When we unwrapped the sandwiches at our destination, we were "shocked" to see that they were not the same as what we'd expected. The mayo and dressing just added to our dissatisfaction with the fact that they didn't listen to our requests. I called them back, and again they were very friendly on the phone. They offered to give us the missing items (peppers and mayo) when we came back. At the least, our expectation was that they would make it right by replacing the sandwiches. We're quite a distance to drive back, and it was kind of weird to be only handed some peppers and mayo. This place makes great sandwiches - They just need to be more active listeners, especially when taking special orders. Note: It was close to closing.

Yelp
This place offers variety of deli sandwich options as well as salads and other sides. They also have a lot of "made in Michigan " items for purchase as well!

William E M.

Yelp
Wow if you want an outstanding sub from three layers to 12 or 15 layers, you can't beat this place and yet it's reasonably priced based on the quantity given and the quality.

Yelp
One of the best places in all of Southeast Michigan for an Italian Sub. You order by how many layers of meat and cheese you want on choice of bun, the 8 & 2 on a hard roll being our favorite ! When I worked in the area Gonella's was tops on our list for lunch. Now whenever in the area...still tops on our list !

Yelp
Over the past 15 months, during COVID, my food preferences have altered. I have had more pizza over these months than in the past decade. I discovered that I really love almond croissants. And I will go out of my way for a good Italian sub. I've been to the Gonella's near my work but the only time I pass this location is when I have to take a detour onto Telegraph. I note the location but it is too far from work or home, generally, to consider it for lunch. Today, though, the stars were aligned and I was able to pull in to the small lot during lunch. Yay! The store is quite large. At the center is a self-serve olive bar with all kinds of brined goodies. Against one wall are shelves filled with chips and popcorn. Perpendicular to that wall is a huge refrigerated wall of drinks and colas. I love different flavored pop but today, I was focused on my mission, the famed Italian sub. Pricing is based on the number of layers of deli meats and cheese. I went with the 14 layers, on a soft roll, with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and Italian dressing. By the time I got home, the dressing had soaked through the wrapper, so I knew my sub would be good. I was so not disappointed. The sandwich was loaded with layer after layer of salami, mortadella, ham, and cheese. For $10, I felt that I received a lot of value. Service was quick and friendly. Before I could scope out the deli case of yummy-looking salads, my sandwich was done. The staff must have wizard-like sandwich-making skills.

Yelp
It's a Market! I had no idea as I'm just ordering away haha. They were very polite in taking my order, I was surprised they were a small Italian market as I had always thought they were a small sub shop and the website is horrible at displaying or showing anything the actual store has to offer. The food was superb though! Excellent bread and I will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
First time in the place today, and I will be back soon ! Their Italian sub a real masterpiece, a classic done REALLY well. They use premium meats, cheeses, and the bun is perfect. get it with everything, you'll LOVE it
google avatar

Yelp
Great sandwiches for every appetite. The service is quick and efficient. As far as ambiance, it's just a sandwich shop.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was quick and efficient. The ambiance is a great mom n pop spot. Definitely gonna be back.

Yelp
Home of the Famous 18 & 3 Italian Subs, I get my on Soft roll. Just right for 2 hungry folks. Still the Famous Oakwood Bakery Buns, they stayed open just for a few wholesale customers. Alcamos Dearborn owners retired, they really should buy the place. They sold over double the subs each day of the 2 combined Gonellas locations for 65 year's. The perfect location for another shop Michigan and Schaefer comes with thousands of regular customers, yeah they just don't get it. #gonellasfoods #gonellas #gonellassubs @originalgonellas #italiansub #bigsubs #detroitclassic #downriverfriendseat

Yelp
Great for grabbing & going, service is great and ALWAYS polite. Pricing is very reasonable and the small market that's housed there is awesome
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
This is a very high quality sub made with proper meats and cheeses. I suggest ordering it on a nice crusty, hard roll. Several pre-made sides are available; mac salad, coleslaw, antipasto, stuff olives. A much better sub and sides than what is served at Flubway. Located on Telegraph, only one short mile south of I-96. The same family as the Oakwood Blvd (refinery neighborhood) store.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
If I could give 10 stars I would. The stag and the food is amazing. I specifically like the 18 layer sandwich on hard roll, with dressing on the side and heavy on the mayo. This is usually at least 2 meals and sometimes 3.

Thomas W.

Yelp
Delicious subs and at a great price. Staff have always been nice. I have been back many times!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh My Goodness! Cannot believe it took me so long to discover this sub sandwich gem. Super simple sub menu, reasonably prices, love how it is topped with finely shaved lettuce. Only drawback is short hours believe they are only open to 6pm & with they had a better website menu...but hey the deserve not to work their life away, right!?!? They also sell some choice grocery items so you get a deli salad or two & the quality ingredients for a pasta dinner.
google avatar

Anitra R.

Yelp
Love the sandwiches here!! Always a hit! The staff is very friendly! Fresh bread and quality meat and cheese!!

Yelp
I was looking for a great place for subs in the area and I read the reviews on this place and they were awesome. So I decided to give it a try I ordered the create your own three meat sub with ham turkey and salami. The meat was so fresh, the veggies were fresh. I really enjoyed the sub. The customer service was also awesome I advised them I had never been there before and one of the guys gave me a cool speech on the options there. I also ordered a cannoli which are baked fresh every day. Really enjoyed my lunch I will be back today.

Yelp
*ATTENTION ALL COLD SUB LOVERS!* Gonella's is definitely a place you want to check out. With different kinds of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Capicola, Mortadella, Smoked Ham), and condiments (cheese, onion, tomato, lettuce and their homemade dressing) you can't go wrong! This sandwich is delicious. You can customize your sandwich as well. The way you order your sandwich very unique (posted below). Not only do they have great subs, but they are also a Italian market! I have been coming here since before covid-19, but I have been impressed with how they are handling the safety of their employees and customers. Fast lines and everyone was wearing a mask. I was even able to get a face mask! If you're reading this now drop what you're doing and give Gonella's a try! 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese $6.00 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $7.00 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $8.00 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $9.00 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $10.00 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese $6.00 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $7.00 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $8.00 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $9.00 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $10.00

Yelp
This place was such a pleasant surprise, I can't help but to give it five stars. I was hungry for lunch at work today, and wanted something different. I found this place on Yelp, and figured I'd give it a shot. Going there, I wasn't sure what to expect. Is it going to be a dump? Will the food be awful? These are a few things that crossed my mind on the way in. Sometimes, places can be icky on this side of town, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Walking in, the place was clean. I mean, sparkling! It reminded me of this one Italian place I used to dine at in Scottsdale when I lived there that was very popular. Walking in, there was shelves of Italian products to choose from. Noodles, pasta, crackers, cookies and a bunch more. Plus, most of the stuff is Michigan local! NEAT! Now, to the menu. It's not huge, but they have tons of meats and cheeses to choose from behind the counter. I got a two meat one cheese sub with all the fixings for $5.50 on soft white bread. You can get it on crunchy, but why? I went with Roast Beef, Turkey and pepper jack cheese. They also have a nice olive selection (I don't eat olives) along with cheese and pasta stuff down below that's prepackaged for a reasonable price. The staff here seemed to be really on point and moved quickly while other patrons came in and ordered food. After wards I decided to get a drink, but no fountain pop was around. I looked up against the wall and they have a entire cooler wall of drinks! (think like a gas station.) It was loaded with the usual suspects of water, pop, iced tea and the such. Nice! Overall the place was great. Clean, organized, and the food was delicious! I plan on going again in the future because I liked it so much. Also, prices are seriously reasonable as well. You won't drop a ton of money, but you will walk away with a full stomach full of good food. Also, as a side note, there wasn't any place to sit and eat in house while here. So, it's basically carryout only. Loved it here!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
If your looking for health food or gourmet, go elsewhere. For a great italian sub with lots of meat this is IT!! Great value! Really good quality and service.
google avatar

Andrea T.

Yelp
Carry out sandwich spot. You pick how many layers and they stack it up! Service is always friendly. Nice place.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
The Italian sub here may be the best I've ever had. Eight layers of meat and two layers of cheese on a soft roll...what more could I need. Definitely give Gonella's a try when you're craving a sandwich.
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
I'd visited the Gonella's in southwest Detroit once and was very impressed. So you can guess how happy I was to learn of a Gonella's close by!! Literally the best Italian subs around!!
google avatar

Lionel B.

Yelp
Gonella's opened in the 1940's in Detroit. The original is still going strong over by the salt mines and Giovanni's. This Gonella's Redford location (more central for Metro Detroit) opened in 2017. Fantastic subs made fast. Get it on a soft roll and add banana peppers. The subs have Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Capicola, Mortadella, Smoked Ham), provolone cheese, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Gonella's homemade dressing, vinegar & oil. These babies are massive too! And you can't beat the prices. Plus these guys are faster than Jimmy John's. Fuhgetaboutit. Here's Gonella's current price list: 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese $5.50 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $6.50 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese $7.00 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $8.00 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese $9.00

Yelp
Went today got the six meat on a hard roll with the dressing on the side. Quick fast delicious. Today was excellant. Always clean and friendly service. At 7.00 bucks great sub too!

Yelp
I found the "Original" a few months ago during a trip to Detroit. This time, I am in the Livonia area, and just happened to stumble upon this place, and so glad I did. As far as Italian subs go, there is nothing better. The standard Italians are ordered by the number of layers of meat and cheese you want. I opted for the 12/2, which is 12 layers of meats, and 2 layers of provolone cheese. Fresh, high quality meats and cheese, on a your choice of a fresh hard or soft Italian sub bun, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and their signature dressing. Absolutely incredible, and THIS is a true Italian Sub, not what these fast food sub shops serve.

Norissa M.

Yelp
The best sandwiches in the city. I'm sad theY close early and only have 2 locations. But that's what keeps it classic. Any amount of Layers of deliciousness. The more layers, the more delicious it is. A favorite go to place for a fresh cold cut. Never had a bad experience. Always clean and friendly service.

Yelp
This review is based on three visits to this location. If I had written the review after my first visit it would have been 4 stars. Clean bright carry out spot which has a small deli, various Italian products and cooler drinks in addition to their featured subs. I really enjoyed my 8x2 Italian sub on a soft Oakwood bakery roll. Quality meats and cheese, fresh veggies and their tasty dressing made for a yummy lunch. However on my next visit, they were completely out of sub rolls. Ok it happens but a wasted trip. When I returned 2 days later, I stood in front of the counter for 15 minutes without ever ebeing acknowledged so I gave up and left. It's not like they were busy. Only 3 other customers (2 of whom were together) and 5 employees. Would it really be so hard to make eye contact and say we'll be right with you? Very poor customer service. Not sure if I'll be back. Update: I decided to give this place one more chance and it was a big mistake. We ordered a couple of sandwiches. I asked to swap one of the meats on the Italian sandwich since my son can't have the mortadella due to food allergies. Very simple request and wouldn't cost them a penny more. The manager denied my request stating no substitutions and was extremely rude. He told me they could leave off the mortadella but I would have to pay extra if I wanted a different meat in its place. Seriously? So I can pay the regular price for less meat or I can pay more for the same amount of meat. Zero customer service at this joint. Never again.

Yelp
This place has delicious subs and it's always great customer service EVERYTIME that I go for my family. They also sell other deli items, pop, chips and etc for a very reasonable price! Highly recommended

Megan H.

Yelp
Wonderful place. I love the kind workers there and all the other treats they have there. Especially the cannolis. Chicken or tuna sub with a pickle is amazing!! Little market vibe with tasty food

Yelp
Drove a half hour to and back to get these. The Best sandwiches in the area. Only wish they were located closer.

Yelp
It's about time this place showed up in Yelp. They actually opened this location (there are 2 others) back in late June '17. And its not really a truly new location. These are the same guys that were operating for many years out of La Cantina Market further south on Telegraph. I was a big fan of the old place. This one? Same great Gonella's quality and same great Gonella's value in a spiffy new location. Subs are built quickly, customized to your instruction and priced quite reasonably. They cater as well. Had one for dinner last night, a 14-layer on a hard roll (you can get soft if you like). Wife & son brought it back to Berkley after spending the day visiting with friends in Redford. I put the sub in the microwave for 1 minute, then added in the viniagrette (came on the side) afterwards. Delicious! The heat brought out more flavor from the meat (especially the capicola) and warming up the dressing just a bit and seemed to make it bloom. Probably the best sub I've had from Gonella's. The attached pics show that 14-layer and also an 18-layer from about 10 days ago. The new location is a bit closer to Berkley and easier to justify the trip. I'll be a semi-regular from now on.

Yelp
This place is amazing! I've been meaning to stop here on my way home since I pass it everyday. Today I decided to stop in and see what it was all about. The owner explained the menu to me and I got the classic Italian (8 meats, 2 cheeses). It's basically the best Italian sub I've ever had - and I LOVE sandwiches! I also decided I needed a cannoli which I was told the owner hand makes himself - I could truly tell. Stop in here! Great service - amazing food!

Nancy S.

Yelp
I have been going here for most of my life. Don't ask for a alot of changes on your sub, order 6 layer 8 layer ect. soft or hard bread. If you want to pick and choose go somewhere else but if you want the best GO here and kiss.

Terreance C.

Yelp
Gonella's has one of the best Italian sub sandwiches in metro Detroit. My favorite is the six layer Italian on a soft roll. The different meats are fresh and full of flavor. The turkey sub is also quite tasty. Even though the prices have increased, the sandwich is worth it. The staff are super friendly and the inside is always very clean. They have various deli products that can be purchased. The hours vary so check before you go.

Natalie C.

Yelp
Been going here since I was in high school. Great place to get a simple but fresh ingredient Italian sub. Love the hard and soft bread.

Greg W.

Yelp
Stopped here for the 1st time today. Ordered an Italian Sub, 8 layers meat, 2 layers cheese on a soft roll for $8.50. Also picked up a medium Antipasto Salad. Very good taste on both. The quality and value are awesome. My new go to sub shop.

Yelp
One of the best itailan subs I've ever had. Will definitely go back many more times. The meat and cheese and dressing wow!! So good !! The service was fast and great during lunch. So much better than the chain sub shops.

Amy V.

Yelp
Tony just brought home my "veggie" sub. Told the girl everything on it. I said to him "what do you mean by everything" he looked at me funny and I showed him this. When we called them, the guy on the phone said a veggie sub is lettuce, cheese, onion and tomato. (I did the mayo trying to fix up something)Clearly NOT! And if that's all they put on a veggie sub, I'll stick with about 10 other places before ever going back here.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
When I'm craving a sub, I come here. Have not been back to Subway since this location opened. Everything is fresh and consistent. They treat you like family here too.

Rochelle D.

Yelp
In a time when venturing out for food should be a special treat, this sub was a huge disappointment. The veggie sub had nothing I couldn't find in my fridge. It had shredded lettuce, tomato, onion and three cheeses (American, Swiss and provolone) on a thick white bun. That's all. no pickles, no yellow peppers, no green peppers, and no special sauce to make it unique. This sandwich that lacked any semblance of imagination costed $6.50. I could have saved my money.
