WHAT
I was going to write this review the day this shop opened but that would have been a little "Gong Ho."
What to get: Brown Sugar Milk Tea, or Brown Sugar Oolong Milk Tea (not on menu, but they'll make it for you), hot (if they actually make it hot) or cold, it's wonderful
What not to get: STDs, so just be careful out there kids.
Yes they have amazing drinks, but the main reason I'm in love with this location is the wonderful employees. The tall guy who always dyes his hair (like, often) who I consider a friend - sadly he moved to Sharetea - life goes on. The girl who works at every busy-AF place in Dun Huang, Tien (sp?). And all the other wonderful Gong Cha employees who treat me like a King, or like Prince, in 1999, in Minneapolis, but wayyyyy more humid than Minneapolis. More like a Mega-apolis.
Love this location:
- Consistently good tea
- Sometimes, they will make the Oolong Brown Sugar Milk Tea (not on menu) for me
- So busy, so great for people watching, and sometimes hotpeople watching
- They will usually serve you (begrudgingly) right up until closing time, and rarely close early
- They don't close their bathrooms early unlike their eternal Dun Huang rival, Sharetea
- As unfriendly as KFT can be, Gong Cha is friendly. So, so friendly. Angels, one and all
Bad points:
- Lines are extremely long, even longer than my oh hi
- $5 credit card minimum
- People smoking at the door and outside need to GTFO.
Gong Cha is a wonderful international bubble tea chain which I first tried in NYC. Some of the locations have really unfriendly employees (cough cough Queens and Manhattan), whereas others are awesome (cough cough Toronto and this one), but all of them put out a consistently delicious product.
The Brown Sugar Milk Tea rivals the very best chain store examples of how good Boba can be. It's milky, perfect, and has that deep brown sugar taste that gives it a real texture difference from your average milk tea. The hot version is wonderful in cold weather, and the cold version is delicious in any weather. I prefer the Sharetea version (Okinawa), but it's a close contest and mixing it with Oolong here (not on menu, but they might do it for you) is a great way of switching it up.
While I still prefer the Okinawa (same type of tea) at Sharetea just down the road (or rather round the corner in the same plaza), Gong Cha is a wonderful addition to the Bellaire Houston drink-and-dessert East Asian scene, which is one of the best Chinatown-areas in North America.
And one way in which it absolutely matches Sharetea is in how nice the employees here are.
And if the Triads come after you outside this place, you're in front of the wrong place - that's "Gang Cha."
