Taiwanese Bubble Tea Chain Gong Cha Is Coming to Austin | Eater Austin

"The campus location at this Guadalupe Street address—dubbed Dobie—is now open and offers the same made-to-order bubble-tea experience aimed at students and campus visitors. Teas and pearls are made fresh every four hours and drinks are tailored to individual sugar and ice preferences; the extensive menu includes brewed and milk teas, coffee and yogurt drinks, and smoothies, with toppings like tapioca pearls, basil seeds, red bean and coconut jelly. A signature slightly salted milk foam crowns many drinks, and seasonal toppings (for example pumpkin spice milk foam) rotate in. The concept traces back to 2006 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and is part of a network of over 1,500 franchised locations worldwide, including in Texas." - Erin Russell

Google
Used to be my go to place but now the customer service is absolutely atrocious. Constantly sounds like you’re heavily inconveniencing the employees playing on their laptops or phones. Terrible attitude and not attentive. Completely forgot the mini pearls in the mini pearl strawberry milk tea, even after verifying the orders were correct. Even thought the small pearls would be at the very bottom after drinking all the other toppings but there were none !!

I've been to Gong Cha twice so far. Really liked my drink the first time, lychee oolong tea with mango popping pearls. Get the pearls. They're really good. The second time I had their dirty brown sugar milk tea. My exact order was: a medium dirty brown sugar milk tea, tapioca pearls, whole milk, regular sugar, no ice. I'm putting the exact order on here because it was quite possibly the best pearl milk tea I've ever had. It was very creamy, probably because the no ice option makes sure the drink isn't diluted. The texture was just heavenly smooth. The pearls were cooked to absolute perfection. The tea and brown sugar flavors were strong, it didn't just taste like sweet milk as pearl milk teas sometimes tend to. It was just so delicious I had to review it. The service could definitely be a little more friendly. They did their job just fine, but getting boba is just such a fun experience in general that having a stony faced server stands out. The location is super convenient. Of course the university food court vibe isn't the most aesthetically pleasing, but if the boba always tastes like it did today, it won't matter anyway cause I'll be transported to my happy place on the first sip :)

Google
Best boba on Wampus by far. I go here at least once a week and the drinks are consistent and good! Customer service is good as well.

Google
I got the Earl Grey Milk Tea with 3Js @ 50% sugar. It's in between watery and creamy, making it a good light milk tea that won't make you feel so bloated. The tea flavor isn't really too strong, but the toppings (pearls, pudding, grass jelly) is quite nice. Pearls are more on the firmer side than soft and chewy. I like my milk teas to be stronger in flavor, but Gong Cha is not too bad especially if you want to get some decent boba. Compared to Moge Tea (which was 100% watery and mid as heck for it's higher prices), it's prices are good/fair. Will be coming by again to try a different kind to see 👁️👁️

Google
Service was unable to answer which ingredients their drinks had and was overall not warm at all. The drink I ordered was ordered with 30% sweetness and was so sweet it was barely drinkable. Would not recommend.

Adrienne Y.

Google
We loved our experience at Gong Cha. I love that you can choose the ice and sugar levels of your drink. I tried the white pearls and really liked my drink. The kids had a dirty and a brown sugar boba. All of them were good. The customer service was great too.

Google
Nut allergy friendly, still just let them know. Parking here is awful (have to pay to be in the garage) so I wouldn't go out of my way to find this place. I'm not a huge fan of Gong Cha and this location is no exception. The oolong milk tea has very little tea flavor. The sweetness is alright at 30%. The boba texture was a bit too stiff and doesn't really have any flavor.

Michael L.

Google
Great tasting tea and all the slush we ordered were really good (strawberry, mango and peach). Service is what I would expect in food courts. Decent parking during the summer when school is not in session. White pearls were better than standard pearls.

Yelp
I came here to get taro bubble tea after exploring around the Domain for some shopping! It was easy to order and the staff was helpful if you had questions! There's indoor seating and they have a variety of flavors if you aren't sure what to get! I recommend coming here for some boba tea!

Yelp
We came here on a weekday evening and there was a trickle of customers here. The staff were very nice explaining whether some drinks have milk in it and how much. We order an oolong tea and also a passionfruit yogurt slush both with 30% sugar. We were surprised at how sweet the drinks were despite the request for less sugar. The lychee oolong was pretty good and not as sweet as the yogurt slush. It was unfortunate because they were so sweet that the drinks were difficult to finish. They can definitely work on making sure the drinks are adjusted by sweetness as ordered.

Yelp
Very centrally located at UT Austin and a 10 minute walk from the capitol building. The service and staff were kind and great and the drinks were brought out quickly. The only reason why I didn't rate this place 5/5 is because the quality of the drinks did not match the quality of other Gong Cha's I've been in the past. Potentially this was a one off.
google avatar

Jacqueline D.

Yelp
Located in the food court of campus, the service is mediocre and drinks are even worse . I ordered a mango green milk tea and it tasted like a cup of slightly sweet milk. There was absolutely no hint of tea or mango whatsoever. I honestly considered throwing my entire drink away but didn't want to completely waste my money so I managed to drink half of it. Never again.

Yelp
I always stop by here to get a refreshing drink! I normally get the strawberry green tea with coconut jelly or the lemon aiyu with star jelly. I prefer their fruit teas over their milk teas, although they are all very good. Their drinks are on the sweeter side, so I recommend not getting the full 100% sugar. They make the drinks very quickly but driving around the area is sometimes really annoying and it is hard to find parking.
google avatar

Ethan T.

Yelp
I went to buy a pink strawberry milk smoothie, instead I was given a brown tea with red strawberry jelly bits crushed up in there. The drink wasn't good and tasted watered down, the red haired employee was also very standoffish and inattentive.

Yelp
This gong cha is located inside a food court near University of Texas. We came in the afternoon on Memorial Day, and there was no line. I got the chocolate caramel with boba, which was sooo good. I got less ice and 30% sweetness. It had a great flavor, and the boba was the perfect texture. It was just the right amount of sweetness. Perfect for a hot day. There could have been more boba, but overall I was content
google avatar

Bella G.

Yelp
For my pearl milk tea, I ordered it with little sugar and light ice. The boba pearls are nice and jelly-like and the tea itself tastes like sweet milk it was overall pretty refreshing and light. I think I may do a series at Gong cha and try/review their top flavors (it's just an excuse to drink more boba but just go along with it)
google avatar

Darian C.

Yelp
I get the combo drink (the 3 Js). It's the price of a regular drink but come with 3 toppings (herbal jelly, egg pudding, and boba). I tried their fruit teas before and I didn't really like it, I think it is too sweet even when I asked for less sugar. Their green milk tea is a bit too light for my taste too. I like their brown sugar boba but because I am stingy, the 3 Js is what I usually order and J always like it! It is a bit filling though so i ask for less boba and usually order a medium (the picture is a large though).
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I got the brown sugar milk tea and a large was only $5! I feel like that's pretty cheap for any drink these days. It's inside Dobie food court and there is street parking or a garage nearby (all parking is paid). I went around 1 pm on a Thursday and there was no line and they made the drink quickly. I thought it tasted delicious and if I'm near UT campus again, I'll stop in!

Yelp
I go to many gong cha locations but this one the most as they are closest to my job. Every single time my order is incorrect. Today I ordered my usual crème brûlée and today it came with none... just foam... even ripped off the top to confirm.

Yelp
I was visiting Austin and met up with a friend at Gong Cha. We had heard good things about Gong Cha and both love boba, so it made sense for us to go. It was a little hard to find since it's in a food court-like area. The line was a bit long, but they were very quick. It only took five minutes from getting in line to receiving our order. My friend ordered a Strawberry Milk Tea and I ordered a Brown Sugar Milk Tea. I LOVED mine. I would absolutely go again. It was the perfect afternoon pick-me-up. However, my friend said that it was one of the worst Strawberry Milk teas he has ever had. He said it tasted like cardboard and they didn't add the correct ice/sweetness. Overall, it seems like this place is a hit or miss, but I really enjoyed it.
google avatar

Jenna Z.

Yelp
I was very excited to get the strawberry milk tea based on the picture but what a disappointment!!!! First of all, the color is completely not correct! It looks and tastes like they just mixed milk tea with some strawberry chunks. I'm really unhappy with how this turned out, it doesn't taste good at all and it doesn't look good either. Very sad, I've always really liked this gongcha and it's been my go to for boba on campus. :(
google avatar

Danielle Z.

Yelp
Yummy and so fast!! There for me when I needed them, I was afraid I wouldn't have a good reliable boba spot on vacation, but they delivered. Service is so nice too.
google avatar

Yelp
This is located inside second floor food court. I guess there's something off about my boba tea that didn't really wow me. This was a Saturday afternoon. I ordered taro milk tea with boba and a coffee milk tea. The boba was on the softer stuck- together side, maybe left out a little too long. The tea and coffee tasted a little weak, as I was looking for more of a potent coffee taste. The taro was alright. The service was fast, and it was a pretty quiet day. So maybe it was an off day for me, since Southern California gongcha is really good.

Yelp
If you wanna get drunk, go instead to a GONG BAR If you live nowhere near Katy, this location is too GONG FAR Unless you don't mind a nice ride in your GONG CAR To come and get a Dirty Milk Tea here at GONG CHA If they get all hipster they might serve drinks in a Mason GONG JAR If the sharp end of the straw cuts your face, you'll get a GONG SCAR I like to take slutty picture here, along with my Porn GONG STAR But if you want the best milk teas, come to GONG CHA WHAT Busy but friendly location of Gong Cha which was the first place - no, the second place - where we saw the cardboard cutout of that pale cute guy and people posing with him and molesting him and whatnot. Good Brown Sugar Milk Tea and Ginger Milk Tea and grapefruit products and well worth stopping by if you like this stuff - especially the reliable kind that you get from a major chain. But their new "dirty" menu is where it's at. See below. What to get: Dirty Brown Sugar Milk Tea, Strawberry Milk Tea, Regular Milk Tea, Waffle w/Boba if they have one. What not to get: Inseminated by your bf's micro-prong-cha. Gong Cha is one of the best chains there is, especially if they have some of their standout items such as the Dirty Brown Sugar Milk Tea on their new Dirty menu, and I also recommend the surprisingly excellent Strawberry Milk Tea, or the regular Milk Tea. Certainly the milk teas are the highlight for me, and these three are exemplary. This location is packed with college kids, right on UT campus, inside the Dobie Mall, and you'll love it if you love the Gong. Now speaking of Gongs, if loving you is Gong Cha, I don't wanna be right.

Kevin A.

Yelp
The service was quick and friendly. I had the matcha latte with 70% sweetness and it tasted great with the perfect level of sweetness. My girlfriend ordered the dirty brown sugar milk tea with boba and she loved it. There's a large space with plenty of seats to wait at for your drink. The setting is overall great for getting some good drinks and studying.

Yelp
9/23/2021 Came here with two friends! My first time trying boba in Austin and first time around the UT Austin campus. Small little boba place, very busy when we went! Staffed by very friendly group of at least five, most of whom seemed to be students of East Asian ancestry. Line of about 8-9 people, with a similar number waiting for their order to be filled. I ordered a large taro drink in the Creative Series with no ice and no sugar, on account of a recent cold and sore throat, and had to wait quite a long time for my order as their existing taro blend was at half sugar. Both my friends had received their orders (large milk tea and medium taro) after about 8 minutes. After 14 minutes, I inquired the status of the taro, and a guy with blonde dyed hair cheerfully said, "It'll come along." I asked again to a different person 23 minutes into my order, and it appeared they just forgot it, yikes. They made the drink in a minute and gave it to me. Taro drink was very delicious despite no sugar! Having not been at a collegiate food place since June '19, it felt invigorating to be around so many young students. Waiting 20+ min for boba is not so fun. 4 stars baseline. -2 stars for forgetting my order completely, +1 star for quick comeback.

Yelp
I recently made a purchase and tried to pay with credit card but the transaction was denied twice, so I ended up paying with cash. However, I noticed the next day that there were two charges of the same amount on the card and asked the store to reimburse both transactions. They said they would look into it and get back to me, but no progress was made over a week and they stopped responding to my last few text messages. I ended up contacting the credit card company myself and submit disputes for the transactions. Not happy with how the store handled this. I'm being tempted to file a complaint with BBB.

Yelp
Finally got to try Gong Cha. Can't believe I didn't try them out when I was a UT student. Anyways, I got their Mango Yogurt Drink with Boba. Very sweet drink as the mango puree comes out strong, so not much sugar needs to be added here. In fact, the yogurt gives it a smooth balance of flavors. All in all, they have a good variety to choose from and prices are fair. Satisfied!
google avatar

Corey A.

Yelp
Not much to say but I will say that this a very quality spot. I enjoy how specific you are able to be in customizing your personal Boba. I wish the place was in a different location or made bigger to accommodate the large influx of people that are always there. Personally, I got the Passion fruit Slushie and wasn't disappointed.
google avatar

Suriya S.

Yelp
One of my favorite bubble tea places ever! I love the flavors however they are often out of mango and some other popular flavors alot
google avatar

Emily N.

Yelp
Not the best in Austin but surely the best around campus/UT. Much better than KFT (Kung Fu Tea) or K-Bop or Coco's Cafe or the like around West Campus, but not as good as Ding Tea. Expect to pay $4.00-$4.50 for a basic milk tea w boba or $5.00+ for a bougie one like "brown milk sugar" or whatever Worth going to, but not going to be mind blowing Free boba on your birthday tho! with ID
google avatar

Daysi L.

Yelp
Didn't get a picture of it, but I had the Brown sugar milk tea with boba. This place is usually super busy so expect to wait a couple minutes. Decently priced as well, a Medium drink with boba is only $5! The milk tea was very delicious but the boba was rubbery and bland. I got the full sweetness and it was perfect!
google avatar

Jessie C.

Yelp
The boba here is quite customizable. You can pick your level of ice from regular, less, light or no ice. You can also pick out the amount of sugar in your drink. The reason that GongCha only gets 4 stars is because their drinks are completely made from concentrate except for the Tea part of the boba drink. The mango green tea drink is made out of mango syrup which is quite disappointing since this drink was $5. If you don't mind the syrup though, the drink is otherwise tasty but overly sweet even at 50% sugar. Also there is almost always a long line at this location especially after 8 PM.
google avatar

Thao T.

Yelp
I got the oolong lycheee and it was so good and refreshing. I think we waited close to 15 min for our drink cause there was a big delivery order. My friend got the brown sugar milk tea but it looked like nothing like the pictures advertised which was odd.
google avatar

Minly L.

Yelp
Great place for a boba fix. The location in inside Dobie Student Spaces, with a bunch of other restaurants on the 2nd floor. . The service was pretty off today, but there were only two workers so it's understandable. The tea was great. Not too sweet and still creamy. Just the way I like it. They give a lot of toppings so if you aren't too keen on them ask for less. Recently been into pudding and I very much enjoyed it here. It's sweet and still subtle. Overall, great tea and toppings, but service could be better.
google avatar

Nasiah R.

Yelp
This is such a convenient spot near UT campus to grab boba. This location is a stall in the Dobie Mall food court. I ordered the matcha latte wit boba. This place never disappoints. The location can get a bit crowded at times, but the wait is never longer than 5-10 minutes. If you are looking for a fun boba shop with lots of combinations this is definitely the place to try. This cafe has a variety of options including cheese foam.
google avatar

Jodi H.

Yelp
Management needs to do better in supporting their understaffed problem! Seriously. Having to wait over 20-30 mins for a boba is not cool. I felt so bad for the two workers that Sunday afternoon. This Gong Cha is inside the mall, so parking is street or pay. After walking inside, I noticed a huge group of people (mostly young college kids) waiting for their drinks, and asked a guy who was waiting how long he's been waiting. He said he just got there, but noticed that the orders kept on getting mixed up. I debated for a solid minute before deciding that I came all the way here, so might as well just wait it out if I had to. I ordered a regular pearl milk tea with my usual 0% sweet and 0-less ice. My order came out correct, but I felt like they were less giving in the amount of boba pearls. The pearls weren't as QQ as Kung Fu makes them, but the milk tea was solid. Can't mess up black tea and milk. I actually got my drink order before most of the people there who were waiting for theirs, so I felt really bad. But there definitely should have been more than 2 workers that day for the amount of people that were there. Not sure how to resolve that other than putting the blame on management. I don't go to this mall, so it took me out of my way to get here. So with that inconvenience and the lack of proper service that day, I'll still stick with Kung Fu for now. However, I think with time and better organization Gong Cha will become a solid spot for boba.
google avatar

Lingzi H.

Yelp
I am so surprised to find a Gong Cha in Austin, I am so excited!!! It is absolutely better than Kung Fu Tea and has milk cap teas!!! My bf got regular bubble tea and I tried the milk foam winter Mellon drink (which does not have tea in it so I am able to fall asleep at night) and it is so good, you may ask them to lower the winter melon syrup so it's less sweet but overall it is very nice, surprising and I will definitely visit it often! We also got free upgrade on July the 4th which made us very very full hahaha. All Asian people grew up in China thank you.
google avatar

Christine Y.

Yelp
No lines or crowds (yet) at this Gong Cha location. Solid drink options with everything tasting fresh. The earl grey milk tea is very good and definitely a basic must. My friend got the green tea yogurt and it was refreshing and flavorful. Everything needs to be adjusted for sugar levels! I recommend starting at 50% and then adjusting from there. A drink with one topping will run you $4.
google avatar

Wayne N.

Yelp
Gong Cha is great. I love the fact that Austin is catching up with the times and the big boba chains are finally starting to come here. Gong cha will bring a welcome reprieve to Texas summer for sure. At other Gong Cha's, my go to drink is earl grey milk tea with pearls and the rendition here is pin point perfect. The pearls are nice and bouncy, the milk tea creamy, yet not to the point of muting that distinct earl grey tea flavor. Gong cha's tea game is quite strong and its a point of pride for them - if you're used to super sweet boba, this one is definitely more on the other end of the spectrum. I prefer to fully embrace and appreciate the strong tea taste by cutting sugar to 50% (though that's up to you). Glad to see Gong Cha on campus. All the asian people who grew up close to chinatown in Houston and Dallas thank you.
google avatar

Juliana F.

Yelp
I feel the need to start this off by saying that I've only tried this on Uber Eats. I found myself craving a boba tonight but I didn't want to deal with the parking by UT, which is where all the good boba places are! So I had Uber Eats bring me a large taro milk tea boba with tapioca plus coconut jelly. It was soooooo good! I'm really picky about boba. I've had some high quality boba in my day since I use to live in Las Vegas where you can find boba on every corner. The 30% sweetness level was perfect for me. I find a lot of boba to be too sweet even when I ask for reduced sweetness. The tapioca boba was good -- perfect chewy level. And the coconut jelly added a fun touch. Oh and their large seems larger than a lot of other places. Possibly 24oz instead of 20oz? I'm sure I'm going to order from here again.

Kevin N.

Yelp
Worst gong cha I have been to. Stood in line For 15 minutes then at 9:58 2 minutes before close ni warning at all say they are not taking anymore orders when there is only 3 people left in line. No manage just bunch of slow kids working here
google avatar

Tara R.

Yelp
I tried this shop in Boston and fell in love. If you love boba definitely try this place out! There are many options of flavors and the customization of toppings, sweetness and ice levels. I have gotten both fruit teas and milk teas and have not been disappointed. This time I got the dirty brown sugar w/ pudding 50% sweetness. A sweet milky deliciousness. The pudding isn't the best one I've had but there was so much of and still tasty. Highly recommend! It is a small spot so it can get busy easily. Located right near UT!
google avatar

My Dao N.

Yelp
I had the matcha green tea latte with soy milk which makes it vegan. It was normal to me, not special or worth going out of the way to get. But that is because what I got was not their specialty. My sister got their foam dirty brown sugar milk tea which she loved and she doesn't even like milk tea!
google avatar

Shirlyn S.

Yelp
I love gongcha. The tea is better than coco's and taphouse. There's a reason why they have it all over Asia. However, the service here at dobie is just plain trash. They have more than 5 staff on duty, but only one at the register and 2 making the drinks. What are the rest doing, you wonder. On their phone or playing Nintendo switch. My drink took 10 minutes to get to me when there was absolutely no line. And the worse thing is, I ordered less ice, but I had the regular amount of ice with LESS DRINKS. What blasphemy is this. If you're a GC fan, I'll recommend you go to other outlets

Ellen G.

Yelp
Ordered the black tea with milk foam topping-quite tasty overall and not too sweet. Tea tasted strong. I can't speak to the boba. Service was swift. Location is tricky as it is in the Dobie mall on second floor so not convenient unless on foot. I also saw they have a decent selection of toppings and a section for tea latte which I look forward to sampling on my next visit. It will set you back about $6.50/$7.00 in 2022. I wouldn't say it is better or worse than KFC or Mogee taste wise but if you prefer black teas, there is a more of a selection. I look forward to trying the earl grey latte-looked delish.
google avatar

Keira A.

Yelp
Gong Chanis great! The only boba place I trust to make amazing boba everytime. The drinks are very customizable and boba is always the right amount of chewy! And theyre not greedy when it comes to portions.
google avatar

Lucy H.

Yelp
Best boba place near campus, lots of customizations and toppings, and the drinks are made pretty well. The fruity ones are really good, i suggest lychee or passion fruit green tea. I wouldn't suggest the slushes though! it's hard to finish when they freeze up. This place can get really busy during optimal times of the day, so sometimes the lines are really long. But having it in dobie is super convenient on the way home or just meeting up with friends!
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
Love their boba for the taste and convenience! One of my favorites is the wintermelon milk tea. The wait can be pretty long sometimes on the weekends, but for good boba it's worth it!
google avatar

Sue T.

Yelp
Worst customer service ever. I even had to ask if the cashier was unhappy to see us walk in. Ordered 7 drinks and he didn't even help the employee in the back. We were the only customers in the store. It bothered us so much that we had to ask if our presents make him uncomfortable. He smirked at us. If you can't give people what they deserve, just close the store instead, then go home and play on your dam phone. We love Gong Cha but this experience was extremely unsatisfied.
google avatar

May C.

Yelp
Best place for boba if you want actual tea and not just powdered drinks. Milk foam is great, boba is chewy and perfect, and their level of customization on ice and sugar is unmatched. would not recommend slushes.

Hector S.

Yelp
Unbelievable that they talk shit about customers in front of your face. Grow up. Maintain some sort of professionalism until your customers at least walk away from the counter. Shame on this place.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Arrived at a busy time. Staff was nice and efficient. The only reputable boba spot around UT. Not my favorite boba chain, but it did the trick.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Cashier blatantly asked if we were going to tip before swiping our card. The girl who handed out the drinks had terrible customer service. She just slid us the drinks roughly and yelled "Here you go." One of our slushes had a dome lid but the slush was no where filled to the top. Pictured is a drink that we ordered with "regular ice" but clearly has more ice. They made her drink with the wrong topping. They did not make enough of a new drink for her, so they simply asked for her old drink back so that they could fill her new one up to the top. Overall, not a good experience and would not recommend to anyone else.
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
Best boba drinks at UT! It's sooo good I finished my drink in less than a minute. Elite Boba!!!
google avatar

Cathy L.

Yelp
This is the go to place for most UT college students looking for their boba fix. It isn't a physical store but a section in the dobie food court. Like other gong cha's it has all the selection of regular and speciality teas. Gongcha has never really disappointed me and I just dock a star for the location because dobie food court does tend to get crowded and this location isn't a typical shop location. But this place is definitely convenient stop and go place if you're craving boba. Sugar and ice levels are customizable. They have a variety of topping options. My favorite is the aiyu jelly or white boba. If the calories of boba make you feel guilty just know white boba/jelly/aloe Vera are all great toppings that are more diet friendly ;) last time I was here I had the honey green tea with aiyu jelly. Really yummy and quenched my thirst. Another drink I used to get a lot was the kiwi fruit tea with aiyu jelly. I love the kiwi bits they add.
