The Gonville Hotel, Cambridge, England - Explore & Book

"Cambridge is having a bit of a moment. Lauded for its venerable history and iconic colleges, punting along the Cam and vibrant arts scene, the city is also home to scientific and technological innovation - the epicentre of Silicon Fen. The Gonville Hotel epitomises this winning combo of heritage and high tech. Sited on the south side of 500-year-old green space Parker's Piece, it began life in 1830 as a Senior Fellows house for Gonville & Caius College. The intervening years saw an evolution from guesthouse to contemporary 92-room hotel - family-run now for over 50 years. There's a welcoming restaurant and bar on the ground floor serving good all-day bistro fare as well as high quality dining - perhaps on the terrace on a fine evening. Following the acquisition of neighbouring Victorian villa Gresham House, a delightful wellness spa was added into the mix, along with a further eight botanically themed and romantic rooms, and a garden for outdoor movie nights in the summer. Highs A good range of rooms to suit all budgetsLots of thoughtful details in rooms including iPad conciergesA good breakfast buffet and the excellent Terrace Restaurant; on Fridays and Saturdays there's live jazz in the convivial Atrium BarEasy to get to: the railway station is a few minutes' walk away and there's car parking on siteLovely friendly staff who strive to go above and beyond Lows Not in the very centre, it's a 10-15 minute walk to the collegesClassic rooms are compactFaint traces remain of The Gonville's former life as a chain hotel; these are being expunged over timeCar parking costs extra" - Nadine Mellor

The Gonville Hotel | Best places to stay in Cambridge | Bucket List Travels

"A recent revamp has elevated the Gonville from a comfortable base to a super-chic bolthole with a renowned restaurant. Genteel pleasures abound – evening drinks on the pristine lawn, live jazz in the Atrium bar and Modern British cuisine in the Terrace restaurant.  The hotel has its own separately located spa, Gresham House – on oasis of botanically-scented calm in a coolly-restored Victorian villa – just the place to dust off the city’s bustle for an hour or two.   The hotel makes exploring the city easy; there are bikes to hire, or guests can book a guided tour by Bentley. This one’s ideal for couples, looking for a romantic base among the bustle.  " - Annabelle Thorpe

We’ve had a wonderful 2 days team meeting at Gonville Hotel in Cambridge. The meeting room was perfect, same with meals. The cherry on the cake was a tour in a vintage Bentley. Mike, our driver, was exceptional. He showed us around the Cambridge marvels, taught us plenty of cool facts about the city and even very kindly drove us to the station, even though it was well out of his way. Big big thanks to him! Highly recommended!

Had a wonderful stay at the Gonville. Staff were amazing and the rooms were well appointed and clean. The lunch in the dining area was fantastic and breakfast was good with a good range of options. Highly recommend a stay and I will be visiting again. Impressive service and customer care. Parking can be tricky, but parking is available next door at the Queen Anne Terrace car park. Location is perfectly placed for other restaurants, bar and attractions.

This was a charming boutique hotel a shortish walk from the centre. Our room was cosy, nicely decorated and romantic, although there wasn’t much natural light. The bathroom was small - one at a time only! We liked the bar with the free jazz and good selection of drinks. Recommended.

This is a well kept, well run hotel overlooking the large green space called Parker's Piece. The City Centre is an easy 10 minute walk. We used the Park & Ride which was excellent. Car spaces at the hotel are expensive and at a premium.|This was a celebration meeting with friends and we made reservations in the restaurant for both evenings of our stay. A month prior to our stay though we were told by Abbie that that the restaurant would no longer be available to us on day 2 as they now had a private booking for the room. We could be accommodated in the bar instead. The bar menu is not a substitute and I was disappointed in the manner of this cancellation (this resulted in my 4 stars not 5). That aside though everyone could not have been more helpful special mentions to Jana and Nico.|Star of the show though is Zane and the wonderful Bentley Experience which is not to be missed. An hour tour around villages and the city centre gives you a very good feel for the place and where best to target when time is limited. |At the moment the hotel is a picture of Christmas with classy and colourful decorations. This looks to be a place with much going on eg. jazz evenings, so do check what is happening during your stay.

The hotel was not what I expected. I feel it’s all style but lacks the functionality. The room I stayed in had a few issues: the window that does not stay open (also opens about 20 percent), the lack of view (facing another building), the basic mini fridge that was not on and does not get cold properly (on/off only), a constantly flickering light bulb, and the ancient air conditioning system that has no control of keeping a constant temperature… my bathroom only had a rainfall shower head, which I suppose makes cleaning challenging? The surface of the bathtub was not clean on my check-in so gave up on having a bath. Parking was possible only if a space is available, first come first serve basis, for £28 per night. I only found it out after booking a room and contacting them, so I just decided to leave it at a park&ride. The bed was comfortable and the location was superb, and it looks nice on the outside. Nothing extraordinary with the staff members, the reception staff was rather indifferent. All in all, a huge disappointment. Would expect everything to be smooth and comfortable at a 4 star hotel.

A wonderful dining experience at The Gonville Kitchen with exquisite dishes and thoughtful wine pairings. I loved the commitment to local producers and seasonal flavours. A very special, bespoke corner of Cambridge that you won't get anywhere else.

My friends and I had a great stay at Gonville Hotel. Reception staff were lovely and helpful. Great location - walking distance to central Cambridge. The free Bentley experience with Zane was a nice touch. |Great breakfast, bar areas, and comfortable bedrooms. I would recommend and stay again.

Google
Without a shadow of a doubt the best hotel to stay in when in Cambridge. We stayed here on the evening of our wedding and the staff were so helpful, efficient and friendly. They left us a complimentary bottle of fizz and a congratulations card. We have stayed many times since and have always had a wonderful stay.

Yelp
This review is not about the hotel, it's only about the afternoon tea service at the restaurant. We visited the restaurant during a time when some renovations were taking place therefore the entrance to the restaurant was blocked. We went to the hotel lobby and asked for help finding the restaurant and the person there didn't seem to know where the entrance was. I always thought whole afternoon tea thing was so overrated but I figured I'd give it another chance (when in England). My opinion has not changed, in fact it was reinforced by the experience at this restaurant. The pastries were not good, didn't taste like they were made by a pastry chef, tasted more like they were store bought.

Yelp
Very comfortable hotel. The bed was very comfortable, the steam shower was great, and the breakfast each day was great. Located across from a park, easy walk to shopping.

Yelp
We came as a family of 10, ages 11 to 82. Without asking whether it was appropriate, our 18 year old, 6 ft 5 inches grandson was assigned a limited accessibility room designed for a wheelchair. The sink is 3 ft high. This was totally against what should be protocol - namely asking before assigning. Did the desk just think these were likely one time guests and what the heck? It's really bad form and bad manners

Yelp
Positions itself as a boutique, luxury hotel on its website. It is not. The common areas have recently been renovated.... and are fine. But the rooms are TINY and need a refresh. I booked a room with a King bed, 3 months in advance with a specific note around why we needed a King (exceptionally tall partner). I paid close to USD$300 for a room that - had two separated single beds - had no wardrobe - had nowhere to put bags, the space was so small we had to move them around to open and close the door - didn't have working wifi - the bathroom was so small that there was nowhere to put a small toiletry bag - overlooked a carpark - the towels had a strong chemical smell I complained - the staff were really nice and apologetic and admitted they should have given us a King room given how far in advance I requested and the special note applied. They promised me they would give me a 30% discount to my credit card on Monday (they charged my card in full a few hours before I arrived at the hotel). It is 7 full days since I checked out, I have chased and got no answer and then I sent a follow up email to another address and finally someone answered. Now I am waiting for someone to call me so I can give them my credit card details so the can provide the discount.

Yelp
The 5 stars are for the bartender Louis. He makes THE BEST Cucumber Collins, White Russian, and Burned Breakfast. He is also one of the nicest guys I've talked to - super caring and patient. When I couldn't decide what to get, he recommended drinks that became my instant favs! His Cucumber Collins also turned me into a Gin lover. I've had nice bartenders back in the US, but Louis is totally at the next level. I wish my trip was longer, and although I've just been back home for a couple of days, I'm already craving those delicious drinks and the great experience. Thank you Loui. Hope me and my coworkers will have a chance to meet you again in the future!

Yelp
Terrible service and no empathy. I booked a hotel for October to go to my friends wedding. The wedding was cancelled and the hotel refuses any refund with multiple weeks notice of cancel. They say I booked a guaranteed rate through hotels.com and they won't make any exception for the extenuating circumstances. The manager was incredibly rude, offered no condolences for the situation, and seemed to enjoy delivering the bad news in my opinion. One of the employees promised me the day before if I called back and explained the circumstances that the hotel would refund me. Now I've wasted time talking to rudest hospitality manager, and I would refuse to ever come here and deal with such an appallingly terrible leadership team to oversee my stay. Thanks for being the worst in my opinion

Yelp
If you like live jazz, this is the place for Friday and Saturday from 7 to 9pm. A pianist and bassist fill the comfy cocktail bar with jazz of all flavors: straight-head, blues, bossa nova, straight ballads, etc etc. They encourage requests and, in typical jazz fashion, seem to know every song ever written. Highly recommend Robin and his band, great guys to talk to in between sets as well! Oh and the cocktails are good and food is good...they have a great twist on a classic Caesar salad.

Yelp
I have stayed at this hotel a few times and the rooms are ok (got even better after the renovation) but the breakfast is terrible and since they increased the price it is not even close to worth it. I'd say you'd be better off somewhere else.

Yelp
Good location but an unreasonably dated hotel that was a poor value. No irons in the room. If you call and request an iron you'll get it for the day but then it will be reclaimed by the staff while your out. Call again each and every morning for the iron or iron everything you want ironed at one time. Uncomfortable bed. I stay in a hotel 2-3 times a month on travel over the past 10 years and this is the worst I've stayed in.

Yelp
I loved this hotel! The staff was welcoming and the layout clean and comfortable. Their food and breakfast buffet: delicious. They have a vintage Bentley and a gallant Chauffer, Elliott, who is charming and always willing to drive you to a nearby location. They have bikes to loan out to their guests which makes for a wonderful Saturday past time especially when the weather is nice (which it was!). I am definitely going back. Keep up the great hospitality.

Yelp
The Gonville Hotel is in the heart of Cambridge and boasts superb views over Parkers Piece. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the venue is spotless and makes a great venue for weddings.

Yelp
Expensive dump - this is how best I can describe it. I paid 170 pounds per night The rooms are tiny They don't even have a cooler for storing food The hotel had remodeling in progress The elevator was not working
