Where to Eat New Orleans’s Greatest Sandwiches

"A whole shop centered around rotisserie chicken? Yes, please. Good Bird nails satisfying sandwiches, the kind to seek when you’re extra hungry (the salads are also hearty without over-filling). The Larry Bird is a prime example of this, combining rotisserie chicken, bacon, and avocado in a tangy sauce and topping it off with lettuce and tomato. The sandwiches, which include excellent vegetarian and vegan options, come with a choice of bread, but they’re best on the chewy ciabatta." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Google
Delicious sandwiches! I love Good Bird for a quick bite. Their servings are generous and the sandwiches make great leftovers. Also perfect for plant based options! I would recommend the green bird and the falafel sandwich. The side salad had a great dressing too. I'll be back.

Google
Every time I come here I HAVE to get the Larry Bird ⛹🏼‍♂️ sandwich. I know there are other great items on the menu because of how consistently busy and packed the place becomes at times, but i can not speak to other items on the menu because I seriously cannot get away from the Larry Bird Sandwich 😂🤷🏽‍♂️. When I am really hungry, I also order the Avocado Salad (which is delicious also)🥗 with 2 Izze drinks. All of it is not only fulfilling, but satisfying. The wait staff is ALWAYS great and the atmosphere is intimate and chill. They are always so friendly, energetic, & down to earth. The owners are great also and really personable when engaging with customers. It makes the experience that much better when you meet great owners like that. Do yourself a favor and visit this location & order the Larry Bird ⛹🏼‍♂️with an Avocado Salad 🥗.

Google
Overall, Good Bird was great. Me and my girlfriend got a sandwich along with a salad. We ate the pita chips first that came with the sandwich and they were surprisingly really good. The sandwich itself was decent, which was the Larry Bird Junior, it possibly needed a little bit more seasoning. Other than that, the salad was excellent, the pairing of almonds with goat cheese as well as the add-on of rotisserie chicken was phenomenal.

Google
Absolutely loved our meal at GoodBird! The Buddha bowl was outstanding- salads were excellent- and sandwiches were just great. Large portions and lots of dressing options. We will definitely be back! Great job!

Google
Great lunch spot for sandwiches and salads. Counter service is very quick, and the food was all very fresh. Highly recommend the Birdman Jr. and the Sue Bird salad. The house made vinaigrette is insanely good. Glad they were able to move to a larger spot to accommodate dining in. Highly recommend.

Ashley Bordes

Google
Grabbed a Sue Bird to go and will definitely be back. Food was fresh, made to order, and had a variety of healthy options. Highly recommend the Sue Bird as it was super tasty! Can't wait to try their other options! The restaurant is cozy and uses sustainable containers.

Google
Hands down my new favorite breakfast spot in uptown. The breakfast bowl is some kind of crack. I added falafel and mind blown (arugula, sweet potato, eggs, goat cheese). While Good Bird might be best known as a sandwich & salad joint, the bowls and avo toasts are truly exceptional. Fresh. Healthy. Delicious.

Google
Had two hairs in my sandwich but it tasted pretty good. Chips were good as well. Price was ok. Their cutoff for breakfast is very strict at 11am, even on a Saturday.

Yelp
The Larry Bird was a very good sandwich. The salad was fresh and the dressing was light and had a ton of good flavor. It is pretty pricey for the amount of food you get which is my only knock. But the Larry Bird was a legit sandwich and I recommend it 100%

Yelp
I came here for lunch one day. The place is really tiny and filled with lots of college students. The walk-up counter is great if you just want to order your food and leave; I decided to dine in. It is off street parking. Everything here was clean including the bathrooms. The staff were fine as well. I ordered the Sue Bird, this one had goat cheese and sweet potato chunks in it. I had never had a salad with sweet potatoes in it and I was very intrigued. I took my first bite and I first thought was how fresh it was, but then I started understanding the flavors and noticed how different it was. I wasn't sure that I liked it yet. I took more bites with the mix of the dressing and the goat cheese flavors and I liked it more and more. The bowl was a huge helping, you don't just get a side salad here, this a humungous entree salad here. In fact, I should have just eaten half, because towards the end, I started thinking I didn't like the sweet potato chunks as much and began to leave some of the chunks while I enjoyed the other parts of the salad. I really like the uniqueness of the salads here and I love the portion sizes. I only wish there were more salad options here. I will be back though.

Yelp
This place is legit delicious! Finally some good healthy rotisserie chicken that tastes absolutely delicious. Not dry and gross like most rotisserie chickens sitting out for a long time. Upon entering the cafe is laid back and quite clean. I like my cafes clean as it speaks to the general hygiene of the place. I did notice this lovely lady cleaning and removing dishes non-stop. She was very diligent and even came to take my plates away even though they have a drop zone for cutlery, plates, etc. she didn't need too, but she did. So 5 / 5 for her alone. Now the food.... You order by the counter and they bring the food to your table. I ordered the south west salad ( no bacon) and my hubby had the good bird. The food came out pretty quickly and it looked great. The salad was absolutely delicious - fresh and just tasty! I tasted the good Bird sandwich and oh boy was that delicious. The bread was so light and fresh and the ratios were just spot on. If you haven't tried it - go try it!! Parking is off street and pretty easy to find.

Yelp
I enjoyed the Good Bird near Tulane. The location is convenient, it has a good amount of seating and some great food options. I ordered the Greek salad made gluten free with chicken on top. It was ready pretty fast and had a good amount of chicken in it. The staff were friendly:)

Yelp
There is amazing natural lighting in the restaurant, which lends to the laid-back feel of the place. The customer service could improve a bit. It wasn't rude, but it wasn't overly warm either. Their engagement level with customers was about a four out of ten. I didn't see the Cobb salad that I ordered last time on the menu. It appeared that the menu had new salad choices. I opted for the Eagle Street salad this time. I was not impressed. The salad itself was pretty tasty, although it could have used a tad more salad dressing. What made the salad fail for me was the very bland rotisserie chicken. OMG, not only did it look undercooked, but where was the seasoning? If the chicken was cooked more to a golden brown and was seasoned, it would've been great. The chipotle avo toast was delicious. I absolutely loved it. The chipotle avo drizzle didn't add spice at all. It just gave it a more awesome taste.

Yelp
Loved my sandwich has been fantastic every time. Service is fast/professional and ambiance is great. Place is clean and plenty of seating.

Yelp
One of the best sandwich shops in town! Especially for the price! And they are quick too!

Yelp
We stopped at Good Bird for a quick and easy lunch and it really hit the spot. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. Loved the sweet potato bites and the grilled chicken sandwich was very flavorful. Service was great as well. The menu offers plenty of options including salads as well. A tasty and quick spot!

Yelp
I've had this sandwich spot on my list for a few months now, after reading Ian McNulty's piece. Finding myself uptown at lunchtime today was the perfect opportunity to try it. Glad I did! The Larry Bird was delicious. Dare I say, almost as good as the chicken avocado sandwich at Cochon Butcher.. almost! Service was very friendly & efficient. Seasoned chips were awesome. Grabbed a table outside, which was just fine. I'd go back.

Yelp
I had such a nice lunch today at Good Bird. I ordered the Sue Bird salad, and added chicken. The salad was delicious, and I could tell the ingredients used were of excellent quality. The sweet potatoes were perfectly cooked - tender and sweet, the goat cheese was rich and tangy, and the chicken was fork tender. The space is bright, cheery, and you can speak in normal tones. Really sweet spot.

Yelp
Food was amazing with fresh ingredients . Simple menu, easy to order. Inside of the restaurant was cozy, clean but not too big. You order food at front counter and they bring your food to you. Workers were nice and friendly . It's amazing how they maneuver in their small kitchen. We Ordered the Greek salad and chicken sandwich, both were excellent. Salad was big enough for two people to split . Our daughter even enjoyed the sweet potatoes cubes. Will definitely be back

Yelp
Good Bird is one of my favorite restaurants in New Orleans, and now that they've moved to a corner spot on Freret Street, it's even better! This cozy restaurant is the perfect place to grab a quick, healthy, and delicious meal with friends. I love that they offer a variety of options, including salads and sandwiches, in addition to my favorite item, the Buddha Bowl with Chicken. Everything on the menu is fresh, flavorful and made with high-quality ingredients. My friends and I have been frequenting Good Bird for quite some time now, and we always have a great experience. The staff is friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. I highly recommend checking out this neighborhood gem!

Yelp
The Mediterranean bowl was fresh, delicious, and satisfying. Pleasant and efficient staff. Spartan decor but very clean. Definitely worth going back to.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely a good chicken sandwich. Glad to have other options. House sauce is tasty. Don't forget the churros.
google avatar

Nandi A.

Yelp
I came back to try one of their shocks sandwiches because I'm a huge fan of their veggie sandwiches. I would definitely recommend getting the sandwich in wrap form since it's lighter and you can taste more of the flavor. Quite ironically I enjoyed everything on the sandwich besides the chicken. The cuts are way too thick and chunky, and dry. I ended up taking most of the meat out
google avatar

Haley S.

Yelp
I feel like I need to try a few more things on the menu to give a comprehensive review, but from the one time I have been here I will say... The service was so quick and easy. All of the staff were nice. I enjoyed my Mediterranean salad with chicken. My sisters favorite is the Buddha Bowl. And the Good Bird sandwich was a hit with my husband. The freshly cut chips were pretty good too!

Yelp
Good Bird is a New Orleans breakfast & sandwich shop located in New Orleans Freret Neighborhood at the intersection of Freret Street and Soniat Street Good Bird opened back in 2016 in the former location of a cheesesteak joint and has become noted for their breakfast and rotisserie chicken sandwich options. Their sandwiches are alright and they have a decent selection of sides. Overall I find the sandwiches to be in the overpriced range as I can buy an entire rotisserie chicken and bread for what just the sandwich costs. Plenty of folks love the food here but personally at the prices that are being charged here I would prefer to just get an oyster poboy. My video review of Good Bird is here: https://youtu.be/Ht6Di2Lj_5k
google avatar

Kelley A.

Yelp
We decided to try this for the first time and it was terrible. The order form described the sandwich as having ciabatta for the bread but it was just some very dry toast. Admittedly, we assumed the sandwiches would be hot but they were cold. The fries were also cold. Most importantly the sandwiches just didn't taste good. They were bland and just unappetizing. We didn't even finish them.

Jeanne D.

Yelp
Food was fresh and good. Service was ok. Cute place. Did not have any healthy sweeting options for unsweet tea. You can't claim to be a healthy option when you only have Equal for unsweet tea.
google avatar

Charchey K.

Yelp
I like the menu at this place and would consider coming back, just needs some quality updates. Found two lovely black hair strands in my sandwich, the staff behind the counter should be wearing hair nets. The potato chips were stale and it's 12:30pm peak lunch. Wish these would be tweaked and it'd a fantastic repeat place.

Judy L.

Yelp
The food is so good! We got a Mediterranean bowl and the Sue bird salad. Excellent. Love the dressings!
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Restaurant is simple and clean. The service was quick and delicious. Tasted fresh. I had the Mediterranean bowl which had quite a bit of citrus but it was delicious. The beaux ginger smoothie tasted more pineapple and didn't taste any ginger at all. The menu has a great selection and I would love to return and try something else.

Gabrielle A.

Yelp
First time at Good Birds. Was in the mood for a salad and came across this place. The salad was absolutely amazing. Only took about 3 mins to get my order. Staff was friendly and environment was clean and welcoming. Would give 5 stars but would like to try more menu items first.
google avatar

Theresa K.

Yelp
My co-workers and I went here for our lunch break. You walk-in and place your order, and then they call your name when your order is ready. I order the Larry Bird- chicken, avocado, bacon, Swiss, and sauce. The sandwich did come with homemade chips, which were good. Although the sandwich was on thicker bread it still felt very light. The sandwich did not weigh you down. Definitely will be coming on lunch breaks often!
google avatar

Riley T.

Yelp
If I could give this place 6 stars I would. First of all, I love how many vegetarian and vegan options they have, particularly in NOLA where they are very hard to come by. I got the falafel wrap and it was just perfect. The sauce was delicious. The falafel was crispy. The ratio of ingredients was impeccable. And the side of chips... as a Marylander, the old bay and vinegar combo touched something in my soul. The food also came quickly and the service was very friendly. It's a good thing I don't live in NOLA because I would probably go bankrupt from eating here so much.
google avatar

Chassidy S.

Yelp
I've heard mixed reviews about this place, but I still wanted to check it out myself. They sell all of their sandwiches as wraps, which feels lighter. I ordered the Birdman Jr. It was amazing. It did have a kick to it, I'm sure it was the sauce. The chicken was seasoned perfectly. The wrap came with house made chips. They're just as good as the chicken. I can't wait to go back and try more items from the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this place, basically because I think their breakfast sandwiches are 5 star delicious and their other lunch/ dinner sandwiches are 1 star sad. But at the end of the day I'm going to recommend going for breakfast so I'd you take that recommendation you can expect at least 4-5 star taste so I chose 4 stars. Their breakfast menu includes a couple different breakfast sandwiches, a breakfast burrito, and a couple different toast options like avo toast. I got the bacon, eggs, and mozzarella cheese on a brioche bun with verde sauce. This green verde sauce is amazing, but I also love that they have several different cheeses and like 5 different sauces you can choose from. The menu also makes it very easy to customize your order but having a clear list of different add ons you can ask for and their price. The place is cute and the staff is incredibly nice. GO FOR BREAKFAST. My only consistent knock over the whole menu is it's fairly expensive for what you get in my opinion. Each sandwich even the breakfast ones do come with a bag of hand cut chips that are tossed in a delicious slice mix but it's a really tiny bag and the sandwiches aren't too big either. BUT I just can't get over how terrible the bread is that they serve their lunch sandwiches on. It's like bunny white bread, barely toasted, with no butter or slice or anything bc on it. At least griddle it with butter like Cane's or just serve everything on your brioche buns or something. The chicken was pretty bland too. They have some healthy bowls and salads on the lunch menu too but I don't know how those are. Overall I only recommend for breakfast.

Susie Q.

Yelp
I really used to love this place but hadn't been in years so I was really looking forward to this sandwich and....man, I was disappointed. I'm sooo bummed out, they used to be so good but this sandwich just wasn't it. The ciabatta isn't the same ciabatta they used in the past - it was just a soft, mushy roll. The absolute lack of texture in the sandwich was disgusting - bury the chicken and bread were mushy, the bacon was undercooked to the point of being almost raw, the tomato was pale and flavorless, the avocado was nearly non-existent. Sad really, the Larry Bird was one is my favorite sandwiched in the city at one point. Plus, it was 28 bucks for a sad sandwich and some chips. With all the lunch options on Freret I'm baffled that they managed to stay open at this pub.
google avatar

Yelp
Crinkle cut fries, fry your mind!! 85 more characters and I'm done! Peace-out mofo!! Jesus let me post this already!
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Really good salad.. I had the cobb with chicken. Ingredients are fresh.. prices are pretty good. There's no seating. It's a small place that it's mostly pick up orders. They did offer to pull the table out on the sidewalk but, there's no shade so that would've not been ideal. Bottom line, if you want a really good salad to take back home, this is your place.
google avatar

McKensie K.

Yelp
Officially our new favorite lunch spot on Freret St! We have been wanting to try this place ever since it upgraded to a new storefront which now has seating for dining in. However, we assumed it was going to be a heavy meal we had to be in the mood for. We were happily mistaken! Salads, sandwiches that can be made into wraps (incredible toasted spinach wraps that is!). We had the Mediterranean Bowl, Larry Bird Wrap + chips, Avo Salad (huge portion for $4) and it was all delectable! As we were going to bed that night, my husband said "is it weird that I want to go back and get that wrap again tomorrow?" we will be BACK OFTEN!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Great food but orders get messed up pretty often. Missing items are pretty common. I ordered a Larry bird w/ jalapeño but it was a completely different sandwich different bread, no tomato or jalapeños. Ordered a sue bird with chicken and they loaded it with bacon. I love their sandwiches and normally wouldn't complain but this is the third time my order has been messed up in 3 months. Wouldnt order take out anymore, maybe consider dinning in? That way they can fix your order if stuff gets left out.
google avatar

Imran S.

Yelp
i have part by good bird often but never had the opportunity to try it so stopped by to try it it's a small place with only three staff - two cooks and one person taking and delivering orders we ordered the southwest salad with chicken on the side, the good bird (veggie) sandwich and a side of sweet potatoes the southwest salad was good - large with good flavors. the veggie sandwich had nice fillings but the bread could've been better quality; the side chicken looked bland but the side sweet potatoes were good
google avatar

Miwa K.

Yelp
A few weeks ago, I placed a big order for pick-up for me and a few co-workers. I was very impressed/satisfied with how they put the order together, and everything tasted great. They were even able to impress one of my co-workers who is normally not a fan of rotisserie chicken (good job, guys!) Overall, it was a great lunch that wasn't too heavy but it still hit the spot for us! FYI - For those not form the area - parking situation is a bit wonky, so it took me a second to find a parking space.
google avatar

Autumn C.

Yelp
The most amazing avocado toast I've ever had. The serving of avocado toast only came with one piece of toast, but there was a good bit of avocado stacked on top. They drizzle the avocado with something (maybe lemon or lemon and oil?) that really puts it over the top. The avocado toast comes with a salad. So delicious. Pricing was good- $6 for avocado toast. We also ordered one of the bowls- great too! And the breakfast sandwich was soooo good too ($9). All around great place with quick service! FYI Small little place and they don't seem to be allowing people to inside during covid. They took our order at the door.
google avatar

Leonarda J.

Yelp
Don't let the unimposing interior fool you. This place has one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. It's owned and operated by local people, so you know they season their food. Also if you like freedom and you're not down with tyranny, then you should definitely eat here. They treat you like a paying customer, with dignity and respect. Chips are amazing and made fresh. We had the Good Bird and the Birdman Jr. both very very good, the good bird is better in my opinion. They have a vegetarian option but why would you come to a chicken place and not order chicken? It's bc of vegans we in this spot anyway.
google avatar

Anthony N.

Yelp
I came here for lunch over the summer to catch up with a friend. The place is quite tiny with limited seating, but provided plenty of good menu choices. We ordered their Larry Bird, Birdman Jr, and Pink Flamingo Smoothies. We sat at one of the three tables and the food did not take too long to come out. The sandwiches looked tasty and came with house made chips, so we were in for a complete meal. Taking my first bite, it tasted healthy and I liked it. I felt like the chicken could have been seasoned a bit more though. The chips were good and had a nice crunch. We enjoyed our smoothies and we were completely stuffed. Overall, I enjoyed the healthy options Good Bird offered and the staff were friendly. I can appreciate the free range, hormone free, and antibiotic free chicken that they use. I will be sure to come back to try different options.
google avatar

Janna J.

Yelp
I've been following Good Bird for a while on Instagram and everything looks amazing, so when I was finally in the area around lunch time, I decided to stop in for a visit. I didn't realize how small the space was going to be. I didn't have time to sit and eat, but it's a good thing, because all the tables were taken and I wouldn't have had a spot to sit (unless I sat at the counter, which would mean intruding at the line). I ordered the Larry Bird. It was pretty good, even though it was falling apart by the time I got home to eat it. However the chips that were supposed to come with it were no where to be seen. It's a little disappointing to pay $13 for a sandwich and chips and have one of those missing. Despite my slightly disappointed feeling of this first visit, I will be back to give it another chance.

Maxfield B.

Yelp
I've only been here once, but it was not a good experience. We got the bueno bowl, which was actually just a box of arugula with salad dressing. Seriously, there were only crumbs of all other ingredients - there was nothing hardy that you would expect in a bowl We also got the Larry Bird, which was hardier, but still not substantial. Flavors were nothing beyond standard. It's not priced super high, which drew us in. I guess they make up for this in their portioning and construction. As a side note, iMaps shows this location as being next to city greens. It's actually at the end of the block on the corner of Freret and Soniat - not that I would encourage you to actually go here. House chips are just greasy bleh.
google avatar

Sarena T.

Yelp
Delicious!! Got the Birdman Jr. with avocado. Toasty buttery bread and tender flavorful rotisserie- sooo good! Homemade chips were prebagged and sitting there for a while in the paper bags, so kinda soggy. I recommend getting the side salad instead. We got in with no wait right at noon, but as soon as we got to the counter, 8 ppl entered behind us, but they are fast and the lady running the register was the sweetest, nicest woman! Will def go back and get a punch card next time! Parking on Freret around here is kind of a pain.
google avatar

Emma A.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place but ultimately was disappointed by what I received as a Good Bird sandwich compared to past reviews and photos. Firstly, it was served on plain white bread instead of ciabatta as described on the menu and I was never told of any substitutions due to them running low on supplies or anything so this was a massive bummer. Secondly, there was hardly any chicken on the sandwich. I mean, take a look for yourself! Compare my photo to past reviews of the same sandwich and it is a grim comparison. I am truly disappointed and hope Good Bird sees this and makes the situation right. The only positive thing to say is that the flavor of the chicken was very tasty. Just wish there was more of it on the bread which was promised, especially for being as expensive this place is.
google avatar

Kaitlyn L.

Yelp
So glad I got to try this place!! I was craving a sandwich and decided it was time to try Good Bird! I am so in love with it! I ate inside, which is pretty small, but there were a lot of people who came in to pick up orders they had called in! It's a great option for a nice lunch! I got the Birdman Jr ! It was so tasty! The aioli it comes with just makes it sooo good!! It also came with house made chips that were crunchy and delicious! I definitely will be coming back here, and maybe try a salad next time!
google avatar

Marigny L.

Yelp
Went here for the first time today, and it was better than expected! So good with fresh ingredients. The inside is pretty small, so I would not go here in big groups. The sandwiches come with chips, and it was all really great; definitely will be coming back! I got the N.O. Bird Panini
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
Nom nom. I had the Birdman Jr at the behest of a good friend who knows her nosh. The Magic Johnson is, well, magical. Combined with the pickles slaw and rotisserie chicken on toasted sourdough=craveworthy. The quarters are a little tight but it's a modest menu that does everything well. Vegan options and homemade chips!!! Pro tip: would love to see iced drinks as you expand.

Tiff D.

Yelp
I had seen good bird around and thought to myself, whats all the fuss?? its rotisserie chicken in a sandwich, how good can it be? uhhhh... yes, its that good, and I dont know why or how because I've eaten plenty rotisserie chicken and its never tasted like this. First, the sandwiches are huge. I could have split one. Especially with a side salad (also large portion) instead of chips. Then the bread, this ciabatta bread is the perfect vessel - sturdy outside, soft inside. Its fresh, locally made bread too. I got the Larry Bird. Bacon, avo, lettuce, tom, aioli. I could have done without the bacon - I KNOW...who says that?? But really, the chicken is great on its own. Its probably the aioli that just tops it off because the lemon dressing on my side salad was also devine!
google avatar

Taylor F.

Yelp
great sandwiches. My only complaint is that they did not have a big space and it seemed that they were understaffed.
google avatar

Shercole K.

Yelp
So Good Bird has been my Go-To since I started eating salads. The Hummingbird salad is fabulous especially for someone who used to hate salads. It includes tomatoes, cucumbers, divine hummus, baby spinach, lemon vinaigrette, and more. I also always order rotisserie and grilled chicken to my salad. It's super filling, it's a huge salad. I really appreciate the freshness and flavors of this salad. COVID Procedure: You should order online or order by phone, (I prefer to order online), and in about 10-15 minutes your order should be ready and waiting at the door with your name on it. It's a super quick and easy pickup system. Also, the staff is fabulous and every time I'm there for pickup, they are always masked up and taking cleanliness to the highest degree. I really appreciate them for being open. If you want a delicious salad or sandwich, definitely check them out. Street parking is available in the area, I normally have no issues finding parking close by.

Yelp
Just want to take a minute and thank the folks at Good Bird. Through all the crazy that this year has given us you have been there to feed us with your yummy sandwiches and homemade chips. I know it wasn't easy with all the challenges but I am thankful that you figured it out and was there so I can pick up an easy dinner for my family. Well done.
