The Best Cheap Eats in Ottawa | Eater Montreal

"The name may be a little silly, but it’s not wrong: this daytime-only spot downtown does creative breakfasts, sandwiches, and salads. The menu shuffles frequently but has included herby mushroom melts, spicy peanut beef sandwiches, and a vegan Buffalo cauliflower sandwich." - Tim Forster

We are in town visiting and stopped in for breakfast, really glad we did..... The service was great, so friendly. The food was amazing, I had the mushroom melt, my wife had the breakfast bowl, and my daughter had a tropical smoothie with a croissant, everything was amazing. Definitely will be returning and we have already told or friends and family in Ottawa they have to go check it out.

Vegan bowl w gluten free toast was perfectly delicious! Also had the carrot ginger tumeric smoothie which was the perfect complementary drink! Highly recommend going here if you have any dietary restrictions/sensitivities! Found my new favourite breakfast spot and can’t wait to try the rest of the menu!! Will be back for sure!!

In search for weekend brunch this place came up we thought of trying it out. Parking in streets is not existent. Had really look at side streets a bit far to get one. All the nearby spots are reserved for the apartment dwellers in the building. Ordered a Huevo Ranchero ($16) - which came with scrambled eggs two corn tortillas with salsa, cheese, sour cream and a side order of fries. The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The order did take a long time, the table not clean when we sat, no condiments on the table and coffee refills slow. An extra star for giving tons of vegan options

They have plenty of vegan brunch items on their menu (weekends only?). Tried the Vegan Benny and it was pretty good. The only complaint is the several small flies roaming around our table, which was unpleasant.

We had such a lovely experience at Good Eats Cafe. We were there for takeout, but the staff was still extremely friendly and attentive. The food and smoothies were delicious, reasonably priced, and portioned well. I can't wait to eat here again!

Good Eats Cafe is THE meeting place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is a licensed cafe with a home-cooked food-forward menu. Near the 417 near Bronson, it's accessible, and my first choice in the area to settle my stomach. :)

Loved this cafe. Friendly staff great coffee, and a nice buzz with people passing through. Cassandra behind the bar was fab. You also have to say hello to the Disco Leopard from Islamabad!

Out of basic groceries, I failed to find a breakfast diner where I could get a breakfast special for $10-12. Menu at Good Eats Cafe looked appealing, and I splurged on Poor Boy Eggs Benny. The large coffee truly is large. Sadly, it was cold by the time I finished. The fruit cup was excellent, as were the mushrooms and red peppers. I wished for more tarragon in the hollandaise sauce, but that's me. Under double vax protocols service was not fast, but I will be confident that the food is 5 stars on my next visit. In the LIV apartments with a streetside entrance. As pet-friendly as the laws allow.

Yelp
So I struggled to write this because I used to love this restaurant. The portion sizes were significantly shrunk, and the brewed coffee was horrendous. I usually get a latte there but decided on a regular one, that was a mistake. Their food did taste good, and their chutney was still delicious but the service was a bit gruff. They weren't rude by any means but I was ignored for 10 mins just waiting to ask for a takeout box. I could tell he was a bit overwhelmed and probably having an off morning, so I didn't take it personally. But when I'm paying $30 for one breakfast bowl and a coffee, I'd expect more than 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half and a few mushrooms in it. The food is delicious but you're definitely overpaying and 50/50 on the coffee lol

Yelp
I used to go to Good Eats regularly when they were in a smaller space on Albert, close to my work. I'd wander over once every week or so. This location has as much character as the old one, but of course in a different way. The first thing I noticed walking in was the colourful floor tile. It made me happy. They still have a simple menu with good choices: soups, sandwiches, bowls and baked goods. Service was pleasant and speedy. It was a beautiful spring day so we took advantage of the large patio to enjoy some sunshine. Food was as good as I remember. I had the salmon bowl while hubs had a chicken squishwhich, basically a grilled sandwich. Happy to have re-found Good Eats.

Yelp
We were looking with my family for a place to eat with our dog in the area, and we read that this place was pet-friendly, so we decided to try it. Our dog was well received. It was a Saturday at noon, and brunch options were a big hit for my kids (7 and 8 years old). When they saw there were pancakes, they went crazy! It took a while to get served, but it was worthed. The food was good.

Yelp
Delicious and satisfying, I looooved Good Eats. As a clueless Torontonian in Ottawa for 2 days, I loved their food so much that I went back both mornings for their Breakfast Bowl ($12.95). Darn, was it ever good!! Not only were the portion sizes generous, but it also came with mushrooms, tomato, spinach, and house chutney. The hash browns were well seasoned and the sausages/bacon perfectly done. Best of all, the food wasn't greasy at all like lots of other lumberjack style breakfasts. It was an absolute treat for the taste buds and left me full for hours. They also had gluten free wraps, bread, and sweets and a vegan breakfast bowl for those with dietary restrictions. The outside of this place looks slightly unassuming (I think it's in the bottom of a condo or office building?) and I ordered takeout both times, but there was ample seating inside. I think this is an "order at the counter" kinda place if you dine in. And the service was super friendly. The Yelpers aren't lying about this place, I'd highly recommend it.

Yelp
5 stars out of 5 for: - indeed, good hearty eats - I had the beef stroganoff in a wrap (should have opted from the wrap, it was too much for me) - free lemon water - friendly staff - open / exposed-concept kitchen - nice eclectic mix of dining-in furniture - a free cookie (chose a chocolate chip!) for my 1st Yelp check-in @ #GoodEats (thank you!)

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious, healthy cuisine. Highly recommend, especially if you're interested in something quick and delicious.

Yelp
I stopped by today 30 minutes before closing to grab a quick salad to go. When I walked up to the restaurant I saw that the sign said "closed". I was disappointed, but thought I'd try to push on the door, just to be sure they were actually closed. Good thing I did because the door swung open and I was greeted. I asked if they were closed and the lady there said they were still open but they didn't have much selection left. I asked if they still had the beet and carrot salad left and they did :) So I had the large beet and carrot salad ($10) with chicken (+$2). They have a special on right now through the Yelp App, so if you "check in" on the Yelp App at Good Eats you get a free cookie. I "checked in" and got a free oatmeal cookie (it was the only type they had left). When I got home, I dug right into the salad and it was great. The salad was grated beets and carrots and chopped up cabbage and parsley, with pumpkin seeds in a sugary lime dressing. The chicken was grilled chicken breast thinly sliced. It was very tasty. The cookie was ok. It was too buttery for my liking. By the time I got home, the paper bag it was in was translucent from all the fat. But whatever, it was free :) The decor is "indie sandwich shop-esque." The person serving me was very nice and pleasant. They don't open very late (4pm is the latest that they open), so unfortunately I probably won't be able to eat here that often. If you're able to get here when they are open, you should give them a try!

Yelp
All in all, the food was good. Here's the breakdown...if you are passing by and need a quick breakfast, it's a good option. But in our case, we were looking for a good breakfast spot and walked 25 mins out of our way to come here. Not a traditional styled restaurant...you order at the counter and get your own coffee from a carafe. Sandwiches come as is..nothing on the side. Like I said, the food is good, but primarily for a quick bite or to take with you. I wouldn't go out of my way to come again.

Yelp
Delicious fresh food. Enjoyed my beef cheese steak sandwich and freshly baked chocolate chip cookie for lunch. Small place with seating for about 20-25 people. Busy just after 12pm with the workforce crowd lined up out the door, but quiet just before and after (mostly ordering to-go). Menu changes weekly. Vegan options available.
google avatar

Yelp
Very laid back atmosphere - reflected in the music and attitude of the staff (a good thing!) Everything seems to be made in house. Had the BLT today...delicious. Good coffee and great spot to sit for a bit in the morning. Also a nice selection of baked goods!

Yelp
Love this place. A little misplaced architecturally, but exactly where it needs to be for breakfast. Mushrooms on toast were delicious and filling. Coffee great. Scrambled eggs on a grilled sweet potatoes slice hit the mark too. How could I possible capture in words the almond cake. Heaven!
google avatar

Yelp
Deliciousness and awesome customer service. We ordered beet salad, avocado toast, veggie poutine and butter chicken plate. The salad and butter chicken were very flavorful and extremely healthy! We also ordered coffees and pastries, all were well made and extremely fresh. Their millennial bar is to die for. Totally satisfied with my cravings and worth the visit!

Stanimir C.

Yelp
You probably won't get a good feeling just looking at the place from the outside. It's a very old house(and not good-looking) near a parking lot. However, everything else about it was really good. Their staff is really nice and the food options supposedly change almost weekly. I was surprised also because their coffee machine looked a bit old but still made good coffee. Not sure if you can get anything even close to their quality for that price in the area. The mushroom melt sandwich had tons of mushrooms and was so filling. So, food and service: really good! Interior: not so much.

Yelp
It's okay. Got a sandwich here for lunch a while back. Positives: Prices are okay, coffee is great, staff is super friendly. Negatives: Sandwiches are extremely messy, goopy, falling apart, saucy messes. The flavours with all the vegetables are just too much. Way too much to be eaten in a sandwich. It's like they should be serving salads. The location is also just not great. This is the kind of place that should be part of a strip mall, but instead is in the main floor of an old house in a disused section of Slater Street.

Yelp
This cute little place is so delicious. There is a nice atmosphere and the service is great! I had a peanut butter jelly bar and avocado toast and it was awesome!
google avatar

Aatik C.

Yelp
I could taste the freshness of the ingredients used in a quality sandwich. Smart yet simple combinations. The menu is not lengthy, which is a good thing in this case when everything is appealing. I had the lamb sandwich and was pleased with the tenderness of the meat. One con is how cold it is to sit inside during the winter, since the space is small and the door takes a long time to shut.
google avatar

Olivier B.

Yelp
I was so surprise of this discovery. Its a beautiful cafe and the food is great and so fresh. I was surprise that the price was not to expensive. The old house is absolutely charming. Every times am in Ottawa I woke up early to go to this place. I LOVE IT !! Free cookies if you check in there :P

Yelp
Just had eggs benny with smoked salmon and soft eggs. Absolute delish and rightly sized for one person. The place deserves more visitors from surrounding hotels!

Yelp
Good Eats should change their name to Great Eats. My wife and I arrived in town for Blues Fest after a long drive. We were famished and I was starting to get a little hangry. So we did what we always do, we feverishly checked Yelp and TripAdvisor for restaurant reviews. Thankfully Good Eats was close and although the reviews were generally positive, the actual experience was even better. Upon arriving we were greeted cheerfully by the two women working behind the counter. They answered all of our questions about the menu. We landed on a veggie sandwich on ciabatta and a Mediterranean salad. Both were flavorful and delicious. The price was very reasonable for the quality of the food. In fact, it was all so good we went back the next morning for breakfast. The real kicker is that as soon as we walked in, the woman working greeted me by name as if I were a regular. How crazy is that, she remembered my name and we had a nice chat. I would consider moving to Ottawa just to go to this place. If you live in Ottawa already, you'd be crazy not to check this place out and make it a regular stop!
google avatar

Peter A.

Yelp
I feel like eating here makes me a better person. There's nothing phony about this place. There is an authentic committment to quality over trends. It's so....wholesome? Nice? Clean, as in natural and simple? Maybe all those things. Don't be fooled by a so-so building. (Though they're moving soon). There's nothing fancy here and that's what makes it so great. Just good wholesome food at a reasonable price.
google avatar

Cassandra G.

Yelp
Very small space but staff was very friendly and the food is delicious. Very fresh, tasting.
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast with my brother. We had a nice relaxing time before he headed home to Toronto. I enjoy the vibe and the good felt great to eat and I was able to redeem a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie with the help check in option! I would definitely come back again! I hope to see something different. I'm glad I was able to get freshly made soup of the week!

Carter S.

Yelp
If you like meat maybe not your spot. Wings tasted stale and the sauce we picked provided zero defence. Cheese puffs were good. Nachos were also good though there was little description of the contents other than general statements like "veggies" so there were some unexpected surprises upon unboxing.
google avatar

Kuroi I.

Yelp
They are really polite and friendly, they are really quick making food and it taste sooo good, although it gets really busy at lunch hour and the best of all, it's cheap, it's like a better version of Subway, with better quality and lower prices
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
This was a great place to eat. It is a small place, but no one cares, we shared a table with other people and everyone was just so friendly. My daughter and I got the same sandwich, the bbq sandwich, she got tofu, and I got the pork and both versions of the sandwich is amazing. The sandwiches are big, bread is amazingly fresh, and the atmosphere was so cool!! Way to go Good Eats!! BTW, parking was on the side and easy to get into, paid parking.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a tasty choice for breakfast! I had the breakfast sandwich with scrambled egg, bacon and cheese on a homemade english muffin. When I asked if they had any orange juice, the guy behind the counter asked, "are you staying here to eat?" When I said I was, we went and grabbed bowl full of orange and began juicing them right there. It was a wonderfully fresh meal.
google avatar

Caitlin C.

Yelp
Always fresh, always delicious, loads of options available on their weekly menu. I love their creative and healthy salads. Did you know there is a half/half option? Why not try two kinds!? They go way too heavy on salad dressing though, ask for less!
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
I was welcome by both of the inviting ladies when I came in looking for some GOOD EATS this morning. Wasn't sure if I wanted breakfast or lunch (although I hadn't had breakfast yet). The time was 11 am (that awkward time between breakfast and lunch when you don't know which menu, breakfast or lunch menu, you can order from.). As it wasn't busy, without me asking, they offered to make something off of either menu. . I found out that the menu changes weekly at GOOD EATS. They post their weekly menu at: good-eats.ca. A new soup each day of the week, and they always have fresh cookies and coffee/espresso and the like. GOOD EATS was GREAT EATS as far as I was concerned. Price was SPECTACULAR, especially for how freshly made each item is, as well as fresh breads, wraps etc. for their sandwiches they make. Spent only $7 inclusive of tax before tip for a Flat White, and breakfast sandwich. I WIN! I hope this place is popular and around to stay for the next time I'm in Ottawa, because it's close to where I stay and it's delightful!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
I want to like this place. I like the vib. I like the staff. I just don't like the food. What can you say about a sandwich joint that can't make a sandwich? The location sucks and they are doomed and I am very sorry about everything.
google avatar

Caroline F.

Yelp
I got the wild rice salad with tofu and it was so so good. And huge! I took some home with me. One of the best salads I've ever had. Since I don't live in Ottawa I will definitely be trying to make it at home. My boyfriend got the pulled pork wrap and he enjoyed it as well. Ambience is cute, fast, casual. Seems like a place a lot of locals that work nearby go to for lunch. Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Roderic P.

Yelp
Great little place for breakfast, was staying at the Delta Hotel and this was a much more enticing option. The fact that it's an isolated building in the middle of some car lots just adds to the charm.
google avatar

Adrian B.

Yelp
Laid back place or quick breakfast and big mugs of filter coffee. Staff very friendly too.
google avatar

Catherine M.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant... Though small and cozy and simply decorated, the vibe was very friendly and homey with easy access to cheap(ish) parking. The staff were very polite and the customers were pleasant as well considering the minimal seating available sometimes put you in the space of others, but no one seemed to mind it. My mother and I got the same thing, a buffalo chicken sandwich (hers on bread, mine in a wrap) with no buffalo sauce, and it was great! My father and sister got the bbq sandwich, his pork and hers tofu, and they both seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. We all also got the coconut chicken corn chowder, and while it was good, it would've been nice to know prior to purchase that it was served cold- that's the only negative thing I have to say about this place. It's awesome that their menu changes weekly; you'll never get bored!
google avatar

Ellen L.

Yelp
I'd recommend Good Eats for their mochas and cheddar scones. I also got to try the avocado toast here but the portions were really small and a bit too spicy for my tastes.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
Forget Tim Hortons. This place has infinitely better coffee, breakfast sandwiches, pastries etc. You'll pay about the same amount and sit in a nice environment with good music as apposed to... Well, you know. Tim Hortons.

Katie G.

Yelp
Delicious veggies sandwich! Haloumi cheese, roasted peppers, pesto, avocado, olives, picked red onion Ina freshly baked wrap! So good!! Original items, lots of baked goods, great place!! With a menu changing weekly, it's always fun to see what's on the menu! Busy lunch spot. Love this spot!

Michael G.

Yelp
The staff are super friendly. Delivery is speedy. The pizza was the best I have ever had in my life. Home made, great crust loads of ingredients. Amazing restaurant!!! :)

Yelp
I've been here twice now and the food is really good. Service is friendly. The first time, I went in for lunch around 11:40am. It was quiet which was nice. I grabbed a gluten free lamb wrap. Wow! It was amazing! The gf wrap was homemade with oats and was soft. The lamb beautifully seasoned and it was topped with roasted red pepper, spicy harissa and a white bean hummus. I seriously wanted to go back for another, but after devouring it I found myself quite full. I decided to return the next day for breakfast since I didn't have time to make something that morning. I decided to go with the BLT. Sadly they were out of gluten free bread... So they made me a fresh wrap (I saw them cooking it!). It was really good as well. I wish they had bread or gf english muffins, but not that day. I showed up around 7:45 and it was quiet, but a few minutes later business picked up and they were busy. I find it sometimes takes a little while to get my food (15-20), maybe because I'm one of the first customers in, or they had to make gf wrap from scratch, but the wait is worth it. I like that they menu changes weekly so there's always something new to try. Lots of gluten free and vegetarian options as well! can't wait to go back some time soon!
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Found this on yelp and thought I would give it a try. Popped in for some scones on the go and they were delicious. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Meredith P.

Yelp
I'm in Ottawa for work, but from Phoenix, Arizona. I have a gluten intolerance, so traveling to a new place and attempting the local cuisine is always a game of Russian roulette. Good Eats took the guess work out of that. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The brunch was amazing, fresh and healthy. The portion sizes for the cost, was also fantastic! Not to mention, the old house where the restaurant is located, is quite quaint and lovely!
google avatar

Isabela K.

Yelp
Awesome mushrooms and onions sandwich! Great coffee, everything was delicious! Just the guy from the front desk wasn't really helpful. But I totally recommend!
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
I had the beef sandwich on a delicious home made warm wrap. Hit the spot. Fresh and warm on a cold day.
google avatar

Suzanne R.

Yelp
This family-run breakfast & lunch spot is not to be missed. All fresh, whole and organic ingredients make you feel virtuous as you enjoy the delicious offerings, which include soups, egg dishes, sandwiches, and quiche. Also, they make a mean fresh-squeezed orange juice. The vibe is very laid back, the aesthetic is funky, and the soundtrack is great. We liked our lunches so much on our first day in town that we came back two days later for Saturday brunch. Go here.
google avatar

Dee B.

Yelp
Checked this place out with a friend for lunch. The sandwiches are some of the best I've had in Ottawa. They have a great assortment of baked goods as well that looked delicious. Hoping to try these next time. The menu changes weekly giving you a good reason to come back and try something new.
google avatar

Doug W.

Yelp
Ridiculously fabulous food. Tried the beef sandwich and fresh chocolate donut topped off by an Americano. Loved it!!!! Thank you Mel!!! See you soon. Telling all my friends. :-)

Imelda N.

Yelp
Tasty, changing menu that reflects the seasons and imagination of the Good Eats crew. Had a delicious corn chowder, a piece of the giant flatbread, yummy grilled haloumi and arugula salad and curried tofu scramble wrap!

Philip G.

Yelp
I had a really nice breakfast sandwich here. The server was very nice and I also had a delicious homemade donut. It doesn't look like much from the street but don't be fooled. It's a really great place for breakfast.

Yelp
Update you yelp account. You are CLOSED on weekend but yelp says otherwise. We walked from Hull just to see CLOSED doors and more upset people.
