America’s Grocery Stores Are Doing Bulk Food All Wrong | Eater

"An independent grocery in Missoula that has made bulk shopping a long-running centerpiece, attracting customers for affordability, less-processed options, and the ability to buy only what they need. For two decades the store has run a container-reuse system: two large black bins at the entrance collect shoppers’ old glass and plastic jars, which employees sanitize and restock for customer use. That program required extensive coordination with the local health department and ongoing check-ins to maintain compliance, and it became a model that influenced other small grocers and helped build one of the largest bulk sections west of the Mississippi in its heyday." - Karine Vann

Google
I love this store! There’s so many gluten and diary free options. Their hot deli and bakery is delicious! The donuts are so rich and flavorful! Surprisingly they are cheaper than my stores here in Helena which is appreciated! Can’t wait to return and load up on produce and yummy donuts!

Google
Great store!!! Beautiful inside and out. BUT if you are looking for a main stream regular product, this is not the place. However if you are into natural, clean living, organic, etc. type things then by all means go here!!! Its incredible. From flowers to bulk foods... what a great place to shop. Hungry? They have a restaurant too!

Paule

Google
Love this place. It’s another office. Healthy and natural selection. Cool vibe (despite using papyrus as a font, lol). Large open seating area, out door seating, great deli, coffee, and food options. It’s landmark of Missoula that is worth exploring.

Google
This store is a staple of Missoula and has been for decades. The products, food, and customer service are outstanding. One n or many can never go wrong by shopping here!

Google
I love this place. It was the first location I saved to my navigation when I got to town. Great selection and really good pricing and most things. Staff is overly helpful and friendly which is a rare occurrence in FL. Other than toiletries, this is the only place I shop. Side note, I love sake and their sake selection is phenomenal.

Jill

Google
What a beautiful store! As a person from out of town, I love wandering around this store. Beautiful displays, unique products. I love shopping here!

Google
This place is always great. Employees are all so helpful and friendly.

Google
This store is amazing and I will shop there in every town my travels take me to that one is located. I have been looking for kumquats for months and haven't been able to locate them and was able to here along with so many other amazing items. Thrilled to have discovered this store. Full of natural products and organic food items. Also has a great wine selection, great food bar and unique items.

Yelp
XCLNT stock of super nutritional foods and coffees & teas -- and so much more! (And the staff is pretty friendly too!) Totally adore the Good Food Store!

Yelp
So, here it is. I spent $2.50 on this nectarine on Saturday. It's Monday, 40 hours later and this is what it looked like when I took it out of the fruit bowl this morning. Ended up tossing it away. What a waste! Why does all of their produce rot? While it's still hard? I'm the grand daughter of an orchardist. My family grew fruit for a living. We would never sell this and charge top dollar. And we would most definitely not take your money and keep it for foul produce. We would call that thievery. But you can see in the above response, these days stores don't really seem to care. They say they do, but offer nothing to rectify the situation.

Yelp
Great selection of bulk items and spices. Produce is always fresh and beautiful display. Bakery items are delicious as well. Good selection of packaged, frozen and canned goods
google avatar

Derek R.

Yelp
Good health foods store with a big selection of bulk goods. Decently priced and has a good restaurant in it.

Miriam A.

Yelp
This is one of the few places I found in Missoula to offer products for whole food plant based diet people.

Julia D.

Yelp
What a beautiful store! Great food, coffee and prices. One of the greatest produce selections I have ever seen.

Yelp
The best grocery store in Missoula. We always visit Good Food Store to stock up on foods when we're in town. They have a great deli with a wide variety of food, fresh baked goods, and the best produce.

Kerri M.

Yelp
I don't do my grocery shopping here but I love to pop in for fresh bread, cheese, and antipasto. They're the only grocery store in town that consistently has checkers at every register. I appreciate boxes being available if I forget my reusable bags.

Yelp
One of my favorite co-ops, it is super clean, has a gigantic bulk selection of quality items and has nice wide aisles and everything is laid out perfectly. There are always some nice flowers avail when you walk in and the bright colors continue as you walk through the store. Really nice salad and hot bar bar, though it'd be nice if there was turkey or chicken for the salad bar instead of always ham. Nice coffee shop in the store with a great seating area and kitchen store also in the building. Coffee is always brewed so perfectly at the coffee bar.

Yelp
Over rated . High Prices. They have the RUDEST customers anywhere. If want proof observe their salad bar. These customers have never heard the word excuse me, or how to wait their turn . Narcissistic people.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
My favorite grocery store for natural foods. If you are looking for an excellent selection of natural food products, this should be your stop. They have so many fantastic products at good prices. They even have fresh foods for lunch so it makes it a really wonderful stop. I love the bulk food section is such a wide variety of items for you to purchase. The store is a very modern with a classic feel, and every staff I've ever run into is so helpful and very friendly. This is become a staple in the Missoula community.

Leigha D.

Yelp
Excellent healthy choice Lots of Organic produce and products Great service Wish they had one in my town

American P.

Yelp
Great store to walk around when you're trying to blow money. Has all the thing-free options and vegan stuff. Good butcher selection and quality foodstuffs.

Daniel g.

Yelp
Don't they mint money here? Yet the cleaning crew seems to be paid starvation rations. *(Witness, please, the counters along the peanut butter and molasses dispensers.) Don't they mint money here? Turn your head from "The Nest" (or risk becoming a column of salt). The real objective correlative for our beloved GFF is this pretentious and posh "Kitchen for the Richen". That the board of directors embraced this trending through of trifles (not 1 handmade local item extant) is proof that absolute money corrupts absolutely. Farcical.
google avatar

Elli Z.

Yelp
This place makes Erewhon look like complete trash / the 99 cents store. Unbelievably good produce, meats and incredible section of local, organic products. Hailey Bieber who?
google avatar

Sydney A.

Yelp
So delicious and so many fantastic options for all types of diets (gluten free, vegan, etc)

Tesella T.

Yelp
The fruit here is moldy and rotting, the vegetables limp, and the hot foods bar doesn't look great. The pizza always looks slopped together. Even if you're super hungry, the pizza looks like cardboard they tried to heat under a lamp with less than appealing globs. None of it looks like much care was put into it. Probably because the employees are not happy to be there. Also they have awful business practices that do not have the staff's best interest in mind. This place tempts with their wage, but does not give their staff good work/life balance. Also if you care about animals at all, they sell fruit from Dixon Melons whom posted a gross celebration on their Facebook. Turns out even if you don't believe in killing, your fruit farms might still slaughter animals.

Yelp
I'm just going to comment on the prices. I went here to get some golden raisins and malted milk balls. The golden raisins were over $6.00 a pound The malted milk balls were over $10.00 a pound. I have had both before so I knew the quality. This time I thought those prices seemed too high, so I went to Winco. I got my raisins for $2.88 a pound and malted milk balls for $6.49 a pound. The huge difference blew my mind. The raisins were the same as the Good Food store as were the malted milk balls. I did purchase their ginger candies that were over $10.00 a pound. Crazy, but I didn't feel like ordering them on line at the time, which was a lot cheaper. Next time I will.

Yelp
Get the pizza from the deli! Fresh baked and delicious!!! The good food store has an amazing deli, and there are so many different food items to try. I highly recommend you stop by the Good Food Store and grab a slice of Zaa!
google avatar

Bertha H.

Yelp
We have one question for the manager of the Good Foods juice and smoothie department. Um, why is it that you have no cranberry juice nor apple juice for your smoothies but have cranberry juice and apple juice on your shelves????

Mya S.

Yelp
My absolute favorite store to shop for groceries, wellness, and treats in Missoula (with the best ambiance and customer service!!). It is always very well kept, with a very large selection of bulk/package free items. I signed up for their emails where they send you the biweekly deals, and they are always really good and seasonal, which I appreciate. Not to mention, they have all things household cleaning and wellness. I really appreciate a store with somewhat affordable (for the most part) foods and items that are natural/organic/local. Make sure to check the deli and cafe out when you've finishing strolling around the store! I recommend the kombucha on tap

Robert S.

Yelp
Easily my favorite spot in town for many things. Excellent quality. Friendly and knowledgeable service from the employees. I'm grateful we have a place like this in Missoula.
google avatar

Laurie P.

Yelp
Good place to take a lunch to go. Not totally wowed but it feels like good fresh food which is rare in this day and age of preservatives and microwaves!
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Love love love their deli area, sandwiches & coffee. Staff were very helpful in the deli area, very organized & clean store.
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
I like this store especially the bulk section and the produce section. I also like the size of the store. It's not like a big warehouse. And I love all the kitchen gadgets and plates etc..
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
Since I'm only a few blocks away I can run in here and get literally anything I need or want! Great atmosphere and some friendly service, especially the evening staff since it's calmer and more relaxed there in the evenings. I highly recommend the fresh and local products like this cheese from Tucker Farms...delicious! I appreciate GFS for having local businesses like the farmers and artists' products you will find here. The deli has some great ready-to-go foods ! Check their flyer for weekly deals!

Yelp
We ride our bikes here several times when we visit Missoula. it's like a Whole Foods The meat market has very limited selection so we go elsewhere, like the farmers market on Saturday
google avatar

Mr. Jim B.

Yelp
Great variety of food, high quality yet more expensive then Whole Foods or other high bar stores. We go there but dont buy all of our food from them due to the super high prices..

Esther P.

Yelp
This grocery store in most sections is extraordinarily too expensive. I can find most of the things I need at other stores in town for much less unless there is a sale on the item then that makes it comparable. The produce here is beautiful! It is very fresh and lasts compared to a lot of other produce in town so that is a huge positive for the store. Staff is definitely hit or miss. Some of the staff is lovely while others ignore you. Cheese department has constantly been a bright spot of kindness (and great recommendations) and Scot on the register always has a smile and a sweet heart. Overall it does feel a bit pretentious and judgey but there are some bright spots for sure.
google avatar

Hawkes S.

Yelp
Awesome hot, cold, salad, and bakery bar. Best vegetable selection in town. Very pricey for some stuff but their sales are awesome and their staff is ALWAYS awesome. Love this place. (It's one of those places I'd be okay with getting stuck in overnight!)

Evan C.

Yelp
For being Missoula's purveyor of local produce, the Good Food Store's produce signage really lacks in clearly stating what farm you as a customer are supporting. Their beef is clearly marked, but the regularity of beef most likely makes this easy. The produce clerks are nice, and many cashiers are nice, though, there's this weird overarching seriousness that's just not necessary for a "local" grocery store. Go to the farmers market or get a CSA share from Harlequin, Garden City, or Western Montana Growers Co-op. You'll save a lot of money by not upselling yourself on dank expensive snacks while wondering what local farm grew the local zucchini and garlic you just purchased. The bulk section at GFS rules. Eggs are MUCH more affordable at Natural Grocers. Food is overall more affordable at Orange Street Food Farm, but the organic produce at O-street is often saggy waggy :( I wish Missoula had a Co-op and a Grocery Outlet.
google avatar

Leica G.

Yelp
This place is the best grocery store that I have ever been to! I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where we have a plethora of natural and healthy grocers. This Good Food Grocery store has the best hot bar, grab and go prepared foods, and more. I picked up a banana cream dessert in a mason jar for 3.99. If you return the glass you receive $2 back. The desert was excellent. We also picked up a tuna sandwich, chicken curry sandwich, prepared salads without all the junk, and some organic produce. All of which were great. Service is top notch and it's clean.

Yelp
What an absolutely amazing store! I have been in the Missoula area for about a year now and just recently found this store! I moved from Kalispell where we have very limited more naturally driven food grocers and this store is exactly what I was looking for. The service here is always amazing and they are staffed very well as to not have overwhelming service. The store has an incredible array of food and drinks that are always fresh and organized. There is a fantastic selection of wine that is also hard to find here. The deli, pizza seafood, and other departments not selling prepackaged food have all her delicious and not overly expensive in comparison to other restaurants and grab and go options. One very specific aspect of the store I appreciate is the lighting. There are little to no harsh, overhead lights that make you feel as though you are shopping in an insane asylum. All the lights are attached to the tops of the shelves and pointed directly down which make sure they aren't shining directly into your eyes. Overall, this store provides a very satisfying shopping experience that allows you to support a local business with the feel of a much bigger store.

Jamie P.

Yelp
Always clean god choices in hot food, fruits and veggies friendly people Pizza Station

Yelp
This is a pretty cool store, I like the design. My husband and I came in to get lunch and ordered from the sandwich counter. They had great vegan options, including Tempeh, Tofu, Veganaise and GoVeggie Cheese. They have a huge buffet style section, some vegan options as well. The store is a good size, well laid out and clean. I didn't do any other shopping, just lunch but I like the store. I'm more of a Natural Grocers kinda gal, but I really like this store too.
google avatar

Shelly A.

Yelp
First time in Missoula and I needed something for dinner that wasn't fast-food drive through. Stumbled upon this store and grabbed a sandwich in the deli. Quite tasty, I imagine I'll be back again soon and quite a bit in the future!

Michael J.

Yelp
The food is good, nothing too spectacular. I go there to buy fresh veggies that are organic. Occasionally I buy soup or a sandwich, their soups are good enough for repeat visits. The organic veggies help create some good tastes. Their bakery offers nice deserts from several local bakeries.
google avatar

Alison G.

Yelp
I love how they have bulk everything! Apple cider vinegar and olive oil maple syrup and honey and collagen powder and laundry detergent and hot chocolate powder and even all different types of gluten-free pasta, not to mention a wider selection than any other grocery store I've ever been in of granola and flours and herbs and spices nuts and seeds etc. I also love how you can use their jars that they have sanitized instead of wasting more single use plastic. The store is bigger and better than any Whole Foods or other natural grocers store I've ever been in. Carries more brands, has more selection, and has good prepared food.

Abbie R.

Yelp
This review is in regards to the most underrated restaurant in the greater Missoula county. Looking for pizza, a salad, a Sammie, or a warmly-spiced and lovingly prepared dish of rotation? Why are you anywhere other than South Third Street? Additionally, the vibes of the dining section are kind, gentle, and welcoming. If you've got covid, a common cold, or aids? The cold busters gonna cure ya. The three salad sampler...how can I keep from singing? Singing off bang bang kiss kiss

Yelp
This is the kind of store that every town should have. Better than a "Whole Paycheck" (Whole Foods), less crunchy than a local co-op, it has all the things for those on special diets or those just wanting organic and a higher quality of product. This store, while as expensive as the main competitor, is the perfect place to buy gluten free, paleo, organic, probiotic, no sugar, lactose intolerant and other food allergy specialty foods. In addition to an amazing bin section, it has some of the most gorgeous produce, a full service deli, cheese, meat and coffee bar (which is excellent coffee, btw) a bakery, as well as a salad bar, hot bar, olive and soup bars. There are many options, sometimes so many I cannot decide and end up spending 3x the normal amount just in my indecision. There is a enormous wine and beer section, highlighting local brews and wineries from the area, and a warm cafe area. There are seats outside, and during the summer it is a gorgeous spot to sit, eat, drink coffee or relax. This visit, it hovered around 10 degrees with snow so I took a pass on the outside views. Also, a very well stocked natural herbs and organic wellness products. Staff is extremely attentive and involved. In each section, there was a friendly smile and eagerness to help you find the perfect item. They must treat their employees like gold, or pay them well, or both, because I have never had less than stellar customer service. The trade off is the high prices, but sometimes you do get what you pay for.

Yelp
Wow. So happy we found this little gem driving through Montana. The food is incredibly fresh, and the place is adorable. We had delicious coffee from the cafe and smoothie bowls, but the deli, pizza, and wok bar all looked equally appetizing. Awesome time:)

Melody L.

Yelp
They're really expensive. Even from a wealthier background, I cringe at the pricing. It's really nice inside with friendly service. They tend to have things other stores in town don't. Usually that's when I end up here.
google avatar

Sadie F.

Yelp
I wish I could give this store ten stars. Where do I start on how WONDERFUL it is? First of all, it's a co-op and the food is fresh, healthy and affordable. It was a dream to go in there. Clean and beautiful, friendly and helpful staff, and it just made us love Missoula more. Well done, owners. You have an amazing store. Please come to Central Washington!!!
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
I'm seeing alit of produce I don't see in supermarkets where I'm from everything looks really fresh and neatly stocked the store is well lit and very clean. Reminds me of a Whole Foods bey better prices. The meat and seafood looks really appetizing too I feel bad I'm traveling and can't buy any perishable items
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
This is the place to go if you are looking for an organic market. They offer a huge selection of bulk products (flour, sugar, spices and seasonings, nuts, etc. You can find many specialty spices and baking goods that you cannot find elsewhere in Missoula. Their cheese selection is big and they offer many different types of cheese from many different regions. They recently remodeled and now have a place to sit and eat. They offer hot foods such as pizza and soups, and also sandwiches and salads among many other things. They also have bakery items that you can purchase and a deli with a large assortment of meats and cheese. Their wide selection carries many wines that you cannot find at the regular grocery stores, which I like. All in all, this is a great natural food store for those who are willing to pay a little extra.
google avatar

Dawn T.

Yelp
Best place ever for desserts and weird drinks! The kids love to go here and buy chocolate in bulk. They do have a great bulk foods selection, a good wine and beer selection, along with meats and cheese. Before COVID you could eat there cafeteria style. For now that's shut down.but stop and check out the breads and desserts. It's completely worth your time to stop.
google avatar

Yohana G.

Yelp
I could easily say this place is better than Whole Foods. Why? Well, to start their bakery items are incredible. They have some many vegan and gluten free options! From donuts to banana bread, to poppy seed cakes, to almond bars, and all sorts of cobblers. Their salad and hot food bar is so affordable, $7.99 a pound! Dont quote me but I think WF is like $10.99 a pound. Moving on to their bulk, they have a much bigger selection than many stores out there. From grains to oils. There is smoothie/coffee shop is also very good. Great prices and yummy drinks. I am very happy that they accommodate vegans here. Vegan pizza, they have it! They even have these Wok bowls with tofu options.

Tony L.

Yelp
A great find - has everything you can want from a health and wellness perspective Great staff too!

M. P.

Yelp
Best grocery store in town, always clean with nice selections you can not find in other grocery stores. The fish, cheese, prepared foods and foods to order are delicious. The customer service is always excellent, always helpful, friendly and they go a step above normal customer service. The in store kitchen shop "The Nest" has a great selection for your kitchen and a wonderful place to purchase last minute gifts. Highly recommend this grocery store and the shop.
