Michigan Wineries See an Increase in Online Sales During the Coronavirus Pandemic | Eater Detroit

"Retail sales have climbed about 10–20% as the business has seen a surge in direct-to-consumer online orders; the winery is also using part of this momentum to support healthcare workers by sending a $25 gift card to a medical professional chosen by each new wine-club subscriber (a program that has already delivered gift cards to a Troy hospital nursing team)." - Stacey Brugeman

Google
Sophie was amazing and helped us. Food and wine is amazing. Service is top notch. The vineyard is beautiful and the location is an easy 5 mins from Fishtown! We will be back next year!

Megan S.

Google
Ordered a flight of wines to try and they did not disappoint! There were many options to choose from and the staff gave great recommendations. We loved their outdoor area too.

AJ M.

Google
This was definitely my favorite of the 4 or 5 vineyards we visited! The staff was very helpful and pleasant to be around. They have a cherry wine that was very very good, I will definitely be ordering some to my house soon! One of my favorite points of the trip was wine tasting here!

Google
Stopped in after a day at the dunes to grab a bottle and head back to the hotel. We ended up staying and getting a flight and a few glasses. Service was super and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable of not just their wines but also how they compare to other wineries in the area. The outdoor seating area is covered and has comfortable chairs and tables.

Cyndi A.

Google
Always constantly great wine. We are wine club members and it is worth it. Friendly knowledgeable staff and yummy food offerings. However since we now have a dog the dog area makes us feel as outcasts. Other wineries in the area allow dogs closer to their patios. Hopefully this can change.

Google
A wonderful family-owned and run winery just minutes from Good Harbor Beach! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and you can feel the pride and care that goes into every glass. The wines are excellent, the setting is beautiful, and the hospitality makes it a must-stop when you’re in the area. Perfect place to relax after a beach day or to enjoy a local gem on its own.

Google
This is a lovely place. The staff is friendly and informative! Oh and the wine so so good. I am a red fine. You need to try the Pinot Noir. Zweigelt

Google
This was an experience greater than expected. Their wine was a step over good and right into memorable, while the staff was extremely friendly. The tasting room was small but clean and presented well, but in the end it was their unique samplings that pushed this experience over from a 4 to a 5. Their may be larger wineries on the peninsula, but there are only 4 that are older and few that compare to the taste of their creations.

Yelp
Went for a tasting, arrived here after a few other vineyards and noticed they have a food menu as well...which was perfect after a few previous tastings. We had a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches and then the tasting. We ended up buying a couple bottles of the Chardonay. We liked this winery and will be back!

Yelp
Good Harbor is a well established vineyard in leelanau. It is a beautiful well established business and the. Wines are available throughout Michigan. We have been here several times with friends when we vacation in Glenn Arbor. We found a cupón for a charcuterie board and two glasses of wine in a magazine/newspaper in town. When we arrived, we were met by friendly people at the tasting bar and we ordered using our coupon. I had a glass of red and she had a glass of white. The charcuterie board was served and very impressive. The white wine was light and fruity, perfect for the charcuterie board.

Yelp
This place is a gem! I did a tasting of mostly whites on their menu and a few reds and a sparkling Tokai which was absolutely outstanding. Every single wine I had was really good. I especially loved their white wines, and the Albariño. This place is such a beautiful location with a great ambience with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The service was great, friendly and knowledgeable. This is a place. I will continue to go back to every time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Well, I have to say this is the first winery in the area that I liked every wine I tried. Nancy helped us and was very informative and descriptive on the wine and was able to help guide us to wines that fit our taste profile. We had a charcuterie board which was wonderful. I admit I'm not a wine club fan, but I enrolled here because it was THAT GOOD and compared to shipping wine from Italy I last liked this well, it was a bargain. I will be back, bringing friends in tow!!!

Yelp
We are new to the wine tasting world so we stopped in to this family farmed establishment. We waited a bit for service until I asked for help. We told our server Gayla that we're new to wine tasting and want to taste and learn. We ordered 5 tastes for $10. The tastes were very short (as opposed to what I saw the people next to us get) but okay, we had a sip each. Our same glass was used for wine 1,2 3 and 4. I decided to ask if this was standard practice and I got a shrug indicating that they were busy and it would be too much to do. Another staff member gave us a clean glass on our 4th tasting. I explained again my interest in tasting and learning and beer tasting always use a clean glass for each sample. Gayla got much more friendly and informative. We appreciated the change in attitude during our last tasting. We bought a bottle and we tipped her too. We probably would have bought more wine had our experience been better. We don't need to go back and good luck

Yelp
Hands down the best wine in the greater Traverse City area. The reds here are to die for, and they have a range of prices that makes it a good fit for anyone. Coming from the Bay Area, not all of the Michigan wineries hit the spot for us, but this one does. We came both last year and this year, and the quality and service were great both times. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Tasty wine. The Pinot Blanc was the best! Good service, friendly staff. We did a $10 tasting. The wine was all good. My husband and I ended up walking out with 6 bottles! This was a great stop after our 4.5 mile hike.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Very rude employees. Was about to take a case home until another employee made a rude comment about us to the employee who was helping us. We could hear everything she said as we browsed the selection. Terrible experience and we will not return.

Carla C.

Yelp
Very disappointed. My husband is a disabled vet. Came to enjoy wine and relax. They are in no way handicap accessible. He couldn't get down to the patio only steps and the counters are so high. It would have been nice to enjoy a glass of wine on the patio. Someone needs to put a gate into the patio so people in wheelchairs can have access Thank you

Yelp
Avery is a gem. She was so enthusiastic, patient and accommodating with us, turned on the cellar lights so we could look at the wine barrels, and even let my sister and friend look at her cute earrings. The wines taste great and the prices are extremely reasonable. The favorite of my group was definitely the golden retriever but I also really liked the demi sec and kerner.
google avatar

Yelp
Stop in for a rainy day of wine tasting. It was very very busy, but we felt cared for all the same! Another fantastic Michigan winery!!
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
We walked in shortly before 6, which we understood was the time they closed. I was coming for a specific bottle of wine I had before and an older woman approached my friend, got very close to her and yelled, "we aren't doing tastings anymore, no more tastings!" With a very short and rude tone. I asked if we could still look which she said we could... they had the wine I wanted, but I was so bothered by my friend visiting from out of town being treated so poorly that I didn't end up purchasing it. There were quite a few people who were still making purchases and drinking wine as well as relaxing outside. Letting us do a tasting probably would have resulted in a few bottles of wine purchased by my friends as well as more than the one I had come for. To top it off, it was my sister's birthday. Absolutely rude, especially since all signs and doors stated they were open.

Yelp
I really loved this place! My boyfriend and I stopped here on our way to Leland. I was pleasantly surprised with the tasting room. I had just been wine tasting in Traverse City the previous weekend, and I was mostly underwhelmed with that experience. But Good Harbor was great! There were a handful of other couples in the tasting room but it wasn't packed like most of the other places I have gone. For $5 you get 5 tastes, and you get to keep the glass. I enjoyed every single wine I tried, which did not happen the previous weekend while I was wine tasting! I ended up buying 3 different bottles. The woman pouring for us was friendly and knowledgable about the wines and was happy to chat with us about our visit, wine, etc. I would definitely stop in again - as you can get up to 4 tastes for free if you return with your original glass! Note that they do not have food, but you can bring in snacks if you want.

Yelp
No trip to Northern Michigan is complete without a stop into Good Harbor Vineyards for me. I was spoiled with great wine after living in Northern California, but this vineyard puts me right back in California wine country: stunning views, without the high prices. I can't get enough of their red blend, "Collaboration", which is why I buy a case each time. I'm not a big white wine fan, but I love theirs, especially "Fish Town White". When I host parties, I take the "Sleeping Bare" sparking wine and mix it with St. Germaine elderflower liqueur - delicious! The Cherry Wine are my gift of choice at the holidays - a real embodiment of what Michigan is known for. I can't wait for my next visit!

Stephen R.

Yelp
I'm going to be to the point. The customer service was not the greatest. My partner and I had gone there to purchase wine as we have done many a time while visiting the traverse city area. The customer service representative talked up the wine club which was fine, and clearly did not give all the details. We went to cancel the wine club because as is apt to happen, life stuff comes up, and come to find out we would be charged a cancellation fee that was neglected to be mentioned to begin with. And the person emailed about the cancellation was not the least bit sympathetic. Safe to say, won't come back here again.

Yelp
Awesome wine and amazing service! Our bartender was very conversational and took great care of us. Avery was also amazing! Not only was she super friendly, she also walked me and my friends to our car with an umbrella so we wouldn't get bombarded by the rain. I couldn't recommend this place enough :)

Barbara G.

Yelp
Denise was exceptional! A great place w great people. If you are in the area, check this one out. The wines are exceptional!!

Yelp
I am going to attempt to review each of the nearly 40 wineries in the Grand Traverse area. In an effort to remain as objective as possible, I will be reviewing the wineries based on how well they live up to their vision of winemaking. I really wanted to give Good Harbor a good review, but I can't. They have some awesome varietals but they make mediocre wine at best. I saw an updated tasting list this summer, and was intrigued by it. However, everything came up short. The tasting staff also knew far less about the wines than any I have come across. I have had pourers on their first day that knew more than the combined staff of Good Harbor. I know that the original owner, Bruce, died LONG before his time, and this may be part of the reason for the quality we are seeing. I will say that the prices are fair, but frankly it is better to spend a few bucks more elsewhere and get a far superior wine. They also charge for tastings and they really shouldn't given the quality. Unfortunately, they are pretty widely distributed, which I am afraid will give many the wrong impression about Michigan wine. Final verdict; skip Good Harbor.
google avatar

Blaise B.

Yelp
The best part about Good Harbor is that if you return and bring your Good Harbor glass with you, your tasting is free! The wines were good, but not my favorites. There are better places on Leelanau Peninsula. But for the price, it's definitely always worth it to stop by.
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
You always like a good poor and at Good Harbor Wineries, you get a happy pour and good conversation, or is that happy conversation and a good pour. Their selection of white wines is delish, and their sparkling wines are lite and not overbearing. Their wine tastings are $5.00 and they let you keep the glass too!
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
It was okay...I noticed early in our tasting they have a little stopper on their wine bottle to prevent over-pouring... Such cheapery is so annoying to me...but I get it...I commented on it, and the lady gave me an extra pour. The pours are rather tiny...you can barely get two sips out of them...I did end up getting a lovely cherry wine here, they served it with a dark chocolate kiss and I was sold! Staff was friendly... Might go back if I was in the area.

Yelp
When you go to vineyard, you don't really expect too much. You go there to taste & purchase some wine, and maybe even acquire some interesting facts like how the wine was made, etc, etc, blah blah blah. So the overall experience was not stellar and not what I was expecting. You walk in and it's a room with a bar where you stand and you taste. No tours that I knew of, and nothing interesting. We ended up with a very rude menopausal woman who decided she did not like us b/c we accidentally took a tablespoon sample of fish chowder that was reserved for another group - it was an honest mistake. She poured maybe a few drops of wine into the cup and then proceeded to roll her eyes and make every effort not to give us anything beyond one word answers. Meanwhile the couple next to us was getting double pours and the guy behind the counter clearly was having a good day. We were in and out of there in 15min, maybe even less. One star earned for the mere fact that they had wine. 1 star for letting me keep the tasting wine glass that I used, nice. Nothing too amazing and reasonably priced. Some of their wines are too sweet. They lost 3 stars b/c of the wretched woman that works there. Go to another vineyard, there are a ton.

Yelp
Good Harbor is not only one of the original wineries in what has become a county full of vineyards, but also a place where you can find some of Leelanau's (and maybe Northern Michigan's) best wine. Mixing in a number of new, innovative vino's (one of my favorites is Collaboration) to a portfolio of time tested and annual bestsellers (Fishtown White, Good Harbor Chardonnay) creates the perfect mix of Leelanau wines. The winery itself is a charming place off M-22, just South of Leland and basically across the street from Lake Michigan. Its been a local, family owned operation since the beginning and you can always find a friendly and knowledgeable staff member in the tasting room. Its not uncommon to see the winery owners in the tasting room mingling with customers or giving a lucky customer a "behind the scenes" tour of the winery itself. If you are headed on a Leelanau wine tour, a visit to Good Harbor is simply a must. Great People, Great Tradition, and Great Wine!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way to another winery in Leelanau and boy am I glad we did! The staff was very personal and welcoming and the wines were excellent. I could tell they were passionate about their wines and the state of Michigan. They even suggested that we buy the wines at our local grocery store since they're cheaper! Too bad I don't live in the area because I would be purchasing Good Harbor's wines frequently. My favorite wine by far was the Labranet. It was so smooth. In close second was the Sleeping Bare Blanc de Blanc. And their Cherry Wine is a perfect mixture of tart and sweetness. I would definitely come back here again and again! P.S. All of the wines are affordable and they carry a lot of adorable wine accessories.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
A nice, mellow winery and tasting room. The $5 keep-the-glass tasting gives you 5 from ~15 wines; this place is heavy on the whites and light on the reds. Our pick (and the only one we bought a bottle for) was the Blanc de Noirs bubbly. The other whites ranged from fine to forgettable, and the Collaboration red was just strange. They do a very sweet cider; I prefer dry ciders. A fine, relaxed place with a souvenir-glass, discounted-tastings-if-you-bring-back-the-glass gimmick.

Yelp
I am from NYC and for the past 6 years I have been getting my wine from Good Harbor Winery. I first tasted it when I was in college and absolutely fell in love with their Riesling. They have a great variety of fabulous wines, but the Riesling will always be my favorite. It's sweet and crisp...delicious! I've tried to find other wines that are comparable, but I have yet to find any. So I order cases often and have spread the love for this wine to all my friends and family here in NYC. I go to the winery every year for wine tasting with my friends and we always have so much fun! The staff is fun and friendly and the wines are fantastic! I would recommend this winery and their wine to everyone! I look forward to this trip every year so if you are lucky enough to be closer to Leland than I am, go and enjoy great wines from an amazing family.
google avatar

Margaret C.

Yelp
Good Harbor is the definition of a friendly, family-run business. The people you meet are most often the people involved in actually making the wine, and it shows in how they talk about it. My favorites are Manitou and Sleeping Bare...yum!! We loved the tasting room and its view of the winemaking areas. Everything is affordable, personable, and the experience was lovely! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Kristen C.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite vineyards in MI (if not my very favorite)! We go there every time we're in the area and have always had a great experience. I always end up buying no less than 6 bottles of the Moonstruck - absolutely delicious sparkling wine. All the wines are really affordable, which is great because I tend to buy so many! The area is beautiful, all the wines are fantastic and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The first time we went, they really took the time to figure out what wines would work best for us. You don't see that kind of personalized service much anymore, so we were really impressed. They have a cute little shop in the tasting room and we recently picked up some nice wine glasses. The only bad thing is that we don't live closer! If we did, this would be our local wine shop.
google avatar

Atlantis A.

Yelp
Not friendly at all until the time to pay and tip. Our server made a point to say she was not feeling good (great and you are serving the public). The wines were nothing thrilling. There are better wineries on the trip. Skip it!
google avatar

Courtney A.

Yelp
Gorgeous patio. Labernet and harbor red were very tasty. Very off putting customer service. Two of the women working behind the bar were exceptionally rude. Called ahead and got permission to bring the dog on the patio which is always nice. But I caught some attitude when I asked about doing the tasting; the women looking at me cross when she found out I had a dog here. We weren't allowed to do the tasting because we were seated on the patio with our dog it turns out. Overall: decent wines and atmosphere but grumpy staff for a not so busy Monday.

Emily B.

Yelp
Nice variety of wines, and beautiful patio. Staff was pleasant and helpful. The Terulium wine was our favorite.

Joanne C.

Yelp
Very disappointed in my over all experience with this winery. We made a trip up north to experience a winery. This one left a bad taste in my mouth! It was not the wine, but how we were treated. First, they give you a glass and said " come back and we will fill it up" We were there on Friday, all six of us tasted wine, brought wine and received the free glass. Went back the next day to purchased MORE wine and got our free glass of wine. The time was 4:54 on Saturday, walked up to the door and we were told " We are closed" ( she was very rude). We left along with 3 more cars filled with potential customers. Also, I have tried to leave a message with their sales and marketing director, voicemail is FULL!

Yelp
Mom and I stopped into Good Harbor yesterday for a quick taste before they closed. They occupy a nice but fairly simple spot South of Leland on M22. It was sleepy, late on a Monday afternoon, but had around 8 other people by the time we left. The staff was friendly and allowed us to chat them up. We are not wine snobs, and they were definitely OK with that. Their tasting scheme is that you buy a glass for $5 and then can try 5 wines. Then you can take the glass home and bring it back and have 4 free tastes. They have a range of wines. Like most in the area, the whites outshine the reds. Of the 5 we tasted, we both agreed that their Tribute Chardonnay was fantastic. The Manitou (Chardonnay/Pino Gris blend) was fairly well-rounded and I preferred it to the Pino Gris. We will be stopping back to try more and will likely bring a case back to Ohio at the end of the week. Good Harbor has been doing this for a while, and the experience shows through with the consistent and good options they offer.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
The lady helping us out was awesome! Super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable! For $5 you get 5 decent samples and a cute little engraved tasting glass. She ended up giving us a couple extra since we didn't choose their best seller or her favorite! I'm not usually one for dessert wine, but they had a cherry wine that made me feel otherwise...it was soo good! And they gave us each a dark chocolate kiss to go with it! Yummy! The inside was super cute as well, they had a self guided walk through tour of the winery you could do along side the cute tasting room with all kinds of wine and Michigan accessories! We didn't plan on buying any wine, but left with 2 bottles, it was so good!! Super glad we made the spontaneous stop!
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Love going to this cozy and comfortable winery every year! The staff are so welcoming and do not dominate the discussion of the wines. They let YOU discover what you like! Only thing: I miss their offerings of non-alcoholic grape juice. For some of our friends, it made a delicious Christmas gift (or sparkling) for Thanksgiving dinner.
google avatar

Jason N.

Yelp
Nice clean winery. Did some sampling. Good service and explanations. We bought a bottle of Collaboration and Red Harbor.

Brendon M.

Yelp
I went on a Leland winery tour with a group of friends, and this was our last stop as it was nearest to the boardwalk (& the Blue Bird, specifically). Since it was our last stop, we didn't expect too much. However, we were pleasantly surprised with what we found! This winery has a lot of charm and a great family-owned back story. The wine itself was extremely delicious--I would have to recommend the ones we purchased: Fishtown White and Manitou. To our delight, the winemaker introduced himself to our group and told us about the wine he made in honor of his late father and winery founder--I think it is called "Honor" or "Tribute," or something along those lines. If you are heading to the boardwalk or are just in the area, then I'd highly recommend stopping in and checking this place out (especially if you want to buy a bottle that is more affordable than Blackstar Farms)!
google avatar

Tab B.

Yelp
Of the wineries we visited in Lake Leelanau this place was the only one that charged for tasting. I really want to give them a good review bc they were quite accommodating. But their wines tasted watered down. It lacked substance. Charging to taste was also cheesy. Dont care if I get a glass. That should have been my clue that the wines were not good. Glad we went to chateau Fontaine after which redeemed my faith on the wines in the area.
google avatar

Brittany A.

Yelp
We stopped here on the way to Chateau Fontaine because it had reasonably good reviews. But, they charge $5 for 5 tastings, by far one of the more expensive tastings. This should have clued us into the why, the wine is lacking so they have to make their money on the tasting. The spot is also a little lacking due to how many lovely tasting rooms there are at Bel Lago, Brengman's, 2 Lads, Brys, Chateau Chantal and now Hawthorne. And finally, when you walk in it smells musty. We should have kept driving.
google avatar

Kristina S.

Yelp
As a native Michigander, I spend my year looking forward to spending time up north in the summers. We stopped by Good Harbor on our way to Glen Arbor this year and found the wine and the ambiance to be exactly what I think of when I think of up north. The people are warm and friendly, the wine is tasty and made from their local winery. The overall atmosphere in the tasting room was welcoming and pleasant. I can't wait to go back!

Alex A.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by on a recent trip to Northern Michigan (my husband's first). This was a really nice family winery known for their whites and cherry wine. I am a red wine drinker, and the Collaboration was delicious. We also brought home a bottle of the Tribute. Well located close to the Lake, so it's a perfect stop for a picnic (which we hope to do next time). Excited to enjoy the bottles at home. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Kati S.

Yelp
Super friendly service. I can't say enough about how helpful and kind they were. Good wine selection and a yummy cider. We will definitely be repeat customers!
google avatar

Reta G.

Yelp
Good Harbor rocks! The people behind the counter are friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are great and reasonably priced. A wonderful experience. I strongly recommend anyone in the area to go to this tasting room.

Rhonda C.

Yelp
Recently was on a wine tasting event in Lelanau peninisula. It was our third such trip. All three times we found Good Harbor to be our least favorite stop (out of a dozen or more). Twice we were there with an organized event and once was just a spur of the moment thing. Every time the staff has been VERY snooty and unfriendly!! The only thing that brought us back this year was their delicious sweet potato bisque. After a third time with sub-par service though, I think all eight of us have knocked it off of our list of wineries to visit. Too Bad!!

Blake L.

Yelp
I love it here! I would go back in a heart beat! I love the service, the tasting room and the friendly staff.

Patrick C.

Yelp
Was in Michigan on vacation and went to Good Harbor Winery. I can honestly say it is the best wine in Northern Michigan! All of the staff were kind and helpful! I can't say enough good things about Good Harbor.

J S.

Yelp
Wonderful people. Good wines. They have some nice items that other wineries don't have (candelabras for empty wine bottles). Just a fun place to stop in taste some nice wines and pick up a bottle or case

Thomas S.

Yelp
Good Harbor gets my stars for the wine. Not wine snobs we just know what we like and they have it.....Trillium and Fish Town are our all time favorites. Tasted just to check them and another possibility, staff was nice, not sure about the $5 thing or the tiny samples. Got larger samples at North Latitude Distillery serving the hard-stuff, they better be more generous if they are going to compete with all the others....this wine thing up there is getting crowded and competitive.

Harriet N.

Yelp
We've just returned from a wine tasting tour in the Leelanau Peninsula and Old Mission Peninsula. What a great experience! Good Harbor Vineyard was one of my favorites! The two gals behind the counter were friendly, informative, and answered all of our questions. This was our first vineyard stop ever, and it was a great one!
