Adorable spot. Lovely destination. Delicious products. Great service from a lovely lady. The outhouse out back behind the dumpster was absolutely horrendous. Absolutely filthy. It’s odd bc most people who visit have most likely been in the car for a bit and I would expect with the variety and sheer volume of visitors that somewhere in this area a proper restroom would be available. Not so though. Just know this before you go there.

A year and a half ago, when we were looking to buy a cottage, I saw this charming store on line and it made buying a cottage in the area even more attractive. Let me assure you, the charm on the outside pales to the warmth and personal attention found within. The owners are truly at the very heart of Goodhart. The store is not only filled with goodies for locals, but once inside you can see great care has been given to pick just the right gifts and yummy treats for travelers. My favorites are their frozen chicken pot pies and frozen egg breakfast pastries. I keep them in my freezer for my guests and they rave about them. Their chicken salad is the best I’ve ever eaten. You also can’t go wrong with any of their baked goods! One of my guests recently called it the “charming little store for foodies”. I’ve purchased most of their table puzzles, which my house guests love, and more children’s books than I want to admit. You will find such wonderful ceramic pieces as well from a local tile maker, and all manner of Michigan candies and snacks. Recently, I came down with Covid while at the cottage alone, and Ami and her staff came to my rescue helping me get food while quarantined. They were crazy busy and still shopped for me and brought things right out to my car! I mean, who shows that amount of kindness anymore? So whether you are journeying up 119, renting or blessed to own here, The Good Hart General Store is a one of a kind stop I highly recommend! It lives up to its name because it truly is ALL heart! ♥️

I don’t think too many places offer the goods and services that this store does. Deli, grocery, sweatshirts, tees, books, Knick knacks, and a post office.

Iconic Northern Michigan spot. Right on M119 along the Tunnel of Trees scenic drive, this classic general store is a perfect spot to stop and grab some refreshments, food, and fine art gifts and souvenirs. They have excellent pies, a friendly staff, and are in a very beautiful location just up from the shore of Lake Michigan. A must-see!

BEST peach pie EVER!!!! Cute old style store with a bakery out back. Absolutely the best pie I’ve ever had. The crust was like a cross between a Scottish shortbread and a sugar cookie. Don’t drive past this place in Good Hart on the tunnel of trees scenic drive

Amazing gem! Some of the best pastries I ever had! We took frozen potpies home, reasonably priced too. How heartwarming to support such an establishment and the charming farmers market on a Saturday afternoon. We’ll be back for more!

Do not drive up M-119 after Harbor Springs and pass by this spot! The lines may be long but it is well worth the wait! In the garden you can play games and relax while you enjoy the amazing cookie, pie and lunch creations made here! Our favorite the Salted Peanut Butter Chocolate chip cookies. The cookies sometimes still warm will melt in your mouth! The array of Michigan made products and local crafts are one of a kind. Prices range from low to high. The atmosphere is of a small family market and it’s perfect for a short stop. Also if you are a dog lover they are welcome to stop and relax with you. There are a couple of dogs who live there that are very sweet. If you are a dog lover it can definitely fill your bucket.

What a wonderful destination and what friendly folks! While on a motorcycle ride yesterday I stopped at the Good Hart General Store in the hope of finding a warm lunch. Wow, was I in for a delicious surprise. Homemade chicken noodle soup, a hot Good Hart Original sandwich, and a picnic table in the sun. Everything was perfect and the hospitality was Five Stars. When you find yourself aimlessly road tripping through rural areas that you previously did not know existed, places like this general store are exactly the kind of thing that you love to see. It's got snacks and drinks and a variety of souvenirs and locally made goods, and it's got a restroom. All very important things that you really need when you're out in what seems a bit like the middle of nowhere. Additionally I believe that they have some hot food, (which I didn't try), but if you need that then they've got you covered. Overall a great place to stop and take in a bit of the local vibe and get yourself a souvenir or something to snack on as you continue your trip. An old historic building along a picturesque drive with friendly people...if you see it, you pretty much have to stop so go ahead and do that. You'll be glad that you did.

A drive through northern Michigan's Tunnel of Trees on M119 is not complete without a stop at Good Hart General Store. Leaf-peepers arrive by the bus loads in the fall, so expect a wait to check out. We always pick up their world famous frozen pot pies to take home, and the chocolate chip peanut butter and sea salt cookies are favorites. The store has a variety of pies, cookies, soups, deli sandwiches and sides. All sorts of Michigan books and souvenirs are available. There is a post office in the store too! Parking along side the road or in front.

An update to my review last year -- Good Hart General Store no longer is serving fresh sandwiches & ice cream, but they are making up for in other ways with their delicious pastries in the morning or pot pies (chicken or beef) to go! We always look forward to coming up north and staying nearby to the General Store. It has the essentials, but also sells fresh baked pastries & sweets that seem to be popular in the morning. We stopped in right after they opened and were lucky enough to try a chocolate croissant and cinnamon twist, both still warm. The store also sells other local goods like candles, gifts, apparel, drinks, and many other finds. Some days, you'll even find Maggie, their resident dog, hanging around the property looking for food from friendly people!

This is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, which is half of its appeal. The proprietor has clearly been thoughtful in determining what to offer its visitors--from eats that are ready to go (the apple bacon squash soup on this chilly day in October was sublime!) to packaged food/drinks and gifts, many of which are nicely non-souvenirish. Sadly, the original building has been replaced, and I momentarily panicked when told the restrooms were "out back" behind the building. However, even though they were Port-a-Pottys, they are the modern, much more tolerable structures (aka clean). Maggie the dog is a precious surprise co-host in the building. The fall colors were at peak when we visited, and this stop is glorious for photo ops (including the old cabin across the road). Staff is warm and helpful.

While researching things to do outside of the tunnel of trees, this place came up and it peaked my interest. After checking out some of the reviews, I figured I'd add it to my list of places to visit if we had time and it was easy to locate. This general stores almost at the end of the tunnel. It's obvious from the road, and partly due to the amount of people that stop in to hang out, shop or listen to music like we did. After the drive through the tunnel, it was nice to get out, stretch our legs and listen to some soft music and shop to enjoy ourselves. The store itself is small but extremely cute. They sell items such as T-shirts, magnets, candy, and a few other souvenir type items that we checked out while inside. There were also two hound dogs on duty that we fell in love with while visiting. Outside, there were vendors selling small ticket items like honey, jewelry and a fwe other things but we didn't buy anything since we really didn't see anything we liked. I think this place sells food too, but not when we were there. It appeared to have a kitchen in the back of some sort, but we weren't hungry so it didn't phase us. Place is cute, and while it's priced accordingly for being out in the middle of nowhere, stop in and throw some cash at them and enjoy yourself!

I don't know if I come to Tunnel of Trees for this store or the other way around but you won't miss this stop because EVERYONE will be stopped here so you'll slow down just to see what's going on, lol! Skip all donuts before here and buy what's under the glass on the counter: like a cinnamon sugar donut/cake/cronut rolled into one. (Do you have a dog in the car? Cookies right next to that! Got your who,e fam covered) We stopped, of course, for the pot pies and took two home. (You can get them frozen from the guys in the back.. we bring a cooler for this purpose) And of course, a piece of berry !!! (Should've gotten more) There's a also a wonderful, cute and tempting store, post office, etc and a bakery case with cookies, brownies and such. (That is NOT self serve and says so but it was hanging wide open so the people in front of me did it anyway... and were chided at the register, lol... ) I also tried the pumpkin soup this time and it was instant LOVE so take a good look around in the back... I've probably missed the soup in the past because of my rush to get the pies! Lastly, don't rush off... there are lots of things to see and buy outside and next door. This time I finally left with a Petoskey stone necklace

The Good Hart General Store is an unexpected delight located in the middle of the Tunnel of Trees. The store has a little bit of everything, but the BEST purchase you can make are the homemade baked goods. The pies looked amazing and the cookies...oh the cookies! Buy a dozen...you won't regret it.

I have been stopping here for 30 years. I love the baked goods, the swag and everyone who works here. This is why we live on 119.

We were looking forward to sandwiches and ice cream, but they are no longer offering this. We were disappointed after driving up from the beach because the sign on the side of the building mentions it. The baked goods are a MUST though. We loved our warm cinnamon twist & blueberry pastry in the morning.

Friendly, good food, wonderful people. Can't go wrong stopping here. It's the perfect place to get lunch or snacks.

This place is tiny and wayyyy north in Michigan but it's clean, adorable and the people working there are amazingly sweet. We took a beef pot pie home but the best blueberry pie ever was eaten up in the car.

What a super great place to stop and visit! Loved the staff and owner!! A true blast from the past! You can have lunch, pick up your mail, grab a gift, as well as a few food items and enjoy the dog too! The pizza was great as well as the chocolate chip oatmeal cookie with sea salt sprinkled on top.

My favorite place to stop after lunch at Legs Inn for the past 10 years. I love this little shop and all it has to offer!!! I always pick up fresh baked cookies and a delicious homemade chicken pot pie to bring home and throw in the oven after our long drive back to Grand Rapids. Kind of a tradition now! Thanks for being the best!!!

Six words: Chocolate Peanut Butter Sea Salt Cookie. The BEST! But you can't go wrong with any of the baked goods, wraps, or other goodies offered at the General Store. PRO TIP: Buy all of your wine, liquor, and beer here. Cheapest of all in the north woods, and the owners guarantee that. Great selection of gifts, books, shirts and other goods you need back home or at the cabin. DO NOT miss their market days and be sure to arrange to have their famous pot pies shipped home!

Cute store! We could not help stopping by when we encountered this store on beautiful M119. We bought delicious muffins and M119 magnet, which was a great experience of our drive.

Only had the pleasure to visit GHGS one time! But just discovered their online ordering! Sent pies and cookies to my Aunt- that she just loved! And a gift basket to a friend in FL! Products are amazing, service fabulous and quick!! Will use again!

Full disclosure: I pulled into Good Hart full of bad sentiments, my stony heart convulsed with rage thanks to a scenic drive gone to hell. Add one flat tire, a cranky baby, and the skies opening up for a storm to my list of woes when my car cut out. My dream of showing my mother the fabled Tunnel of Trees was at a soggy nadir when we barely rolled into the parking lot of Good Hart General Store this past September. Was I at my best? Hell no. This charming store sits off M-119, beckoning to visitors with a fairly broad parking lot. The site lurches high above Lake MIchigan, a screen of pine trees and stately oaks lending their shade over the view and the picnic site. On any other day, what a glorious place to sit with a sandwich. Hop up to a bench and enjoy nature at its finest in Northern Michigan. Do not, as I did, stamp around crushing acorns under your feet and glaring jealously at all the other functioning vehicles who did not get a flawed engineering design that sucked up water from puddles into the cold air intake. Admire the berth wide enough for a towing flatbed to pull up while people still have room to walk around! There are pleasant trails behind the General Store that are best lightly trod down, not stamped along cursing every word you have for rain. As a Pacific Northwesterner of British descent, I have about 49, and another 22 from other languages. Take the opportunity to swing down to the beach. The owners delight in offering directions along with sympathetic looks! I did not get to claim a Petoskey stone from their lovely pebble beach because I hurled candidates instead into the foaming water. Whoops. The various lovely ornaments inside the store split between little necessities and definite goodies. My husband came out with a box of candied orange slices. You've seen their poor cousins in many a country store or a candy shop, usually stale and hard underneath a thick crystallized layer of sugar. These are the kingly treats that smell heavily of blessed citrus, and are soft and chewy in ways I've never imagined before. Even with my mouth twisted up ready to cry for how badly my holiday turned out, the candies were abominably good. What mischief was this? The sort of thing that kept three stressed, frazzled adults entertained for many miles between Petoskey and Detroit, that's what. Super-friendly staff at the general store made my husband and baby's day much better, since they were sweet enough to provide hot water and a few towelettes after the little one decided to go and add a cold to our list of miseries. Their pastries were top-notch and fairly priced, filling my mom up while we waited on a cab to come from the far side of Pellston to get us back to our hotel. They went the extra mile to do nice turns, and I'm determined to return and give this place the proper review it deserves.

Mail a letter, check homes for sale, buy a t-shirt, get a newspaper, eat homemade snacks and meals, and learn about the area all in one spot! This is essentially the welcome center/chamber of commerce. Home baked cookies washed down with a glass of wine made for a fantastic break in our day. Without a doubt, the Good Hart General Store gets a glowing 5 star rating from me. I will admit, this place evokes nostalgia of my childhood, where I spent part of my summers in Northern Michigan, where the simple pleasures in life reign supreme. It is a quaint building and a family run business offering convenience items, baked goods, a deli, and even a post office. Anyone spending time in Northern Michigan simply must come here to get some of their baked goods. The blueberry pies here are worthy of gold medals. I only wish the store still sold "It's Gooder in Good Hart" t-shirts. A stone's throw away is the Good Hart Beach, which offers a beautiful, quiet, nature-filled place to soak up the sun and be soothed by the sound of the surf. This place is the definition of simple goodness! ahh, Pure Michigan.

Best place ever up nort! Get a house made potpie and a six pack of Michigan craft beer to take home. Make sure you visit with the resident dogs and joke with surly owner behind the counter - he is a hoot who can hold his own in any conversation!

Amazing cookies fresh baked cookies. Everyone in town is there this weekend. Peanut butter chocolate chip oatmeal icing I had them all. They are a little expensive but well worth it

After a wonderful motorcycle ride through the tunnel of trees on M-119, this place was a welcomed stop. The amazing bakery, and sandwich post here is so good. And this store functions as the post office as well!!!!

Love your store! We come up north each summer and one of the best parts is stopping at your store while out in our motorcycles. One of the great pleasures of living in Northern Michigan is the opportunity to frequent some really outstanding family businesses. One of the best up here is the Good Hart General Store. Originally built in 1934, the little red store serves as a grocery, deli, bakery and post office. The pot pies are a thing of beauty as are all of the baked goods. Located on the famous "tunnel of trees", the store is an ideal place to stop as you cruise M119. In addition to great food they offer made in Michigan products and there's usually a dog to pet. Last time we stopped there they filled up our water bottle for our dog baby!

The Good Hart General Store always gives you a warm happy feeling inside. My family and I rented a cabin on lake michigan nearly every summer while growing up and always visited this store. From Good Hart clothes and hats to pies to last minute food, they never disappoint.

We stopped in for a sandwich with two very hungry children. We were greeted by a very friendly gentleman (one of the owners) who talked to us about Ann Arbor (because of our U of M card). We went outside to eat and sat in a clean, comfortable sitting area with the sweetest dogs hanging about. One is the owners came over and sat with his for a chat. Afterwards my children were full and happy. He said "she (the owner) was nice. She made my day." Thank you for a lovely up north experience and delicious food!"

We came through the tunnel of trees this weekend and we made it a point to stop at the good hart general store. They had some nice products to purchase. We really enjoyed the cookies, even though they might be considered a little pricey they are so worth it! The only downfall was it was kind of cramped in space when there are a lot people in the building but you can overlook that when your there. Also, expect to wait in line when it's busy because they only have one register and the guy behind the counter had to go back and forth to get pot pies for customers at times. However, if you build a little extra time in knowing this, you will not be disappointed in finding a unique place to stop and take some goodies home with you.

Random stop on a rainy August morning. We left Mackinaw a City in the morning heading for Petoskey via the scenic route. It was 10:30am, so we thought we'd get a snack. I'm a good baker, but appreciate fabulous bakery. We each tried items (still warm!) from the case & the cinnamon doughnut and raspberry cream cheese pastry are still the best things we ate in a long time. Highly recommended!! Go out of your way!

A summer and winter favorite nestled in the beautiful "Tunnel of Trees" along Lake Michigan's shoreline. Can't decide on what to recommend as my favorite but you can't go wrong with any of the fresh daily baked goods. Pies, cakes, breads, cookies and fresh doughnuts in the morning. The best part is the warm small town greeting you get when you walk in the door. And while a small little store, it is amazing how much they stock so you have what you need right around the corner.
