Holiday Pop-Up Bars and Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The 70s-inspired bar has turned itself into the Xmas Bar for the holidays, with wall-to-wall seasonal decorations and a festive soundtrack. Sip on the Jolly Hopper, a twist on a Grasshopper featuring Fernet, pandan, creme de menthe, and a chocolate garnish or Santa’s Lil Night Cap, a creamy house-made coquito served with a Christmas cookie. Popular Midwest transplant Sexton’s is offering Gaslamp crowds a menu that includes Brooklyn-style pizzas and a Johnny Meal, with either a burger or house-battered chicken tenders, fries, and a take-home toy." - Candice Woo

One of the BEST and most CREATIVE bar designs in San Diego - a staple for any Downtown Bar Crawls or wanting to show someone from out of town a great time. One of the best custom cocktail menus and hands down THE best happy hour on a Friday in Downtown - Good Night John Boy makes sure that EVERY night here is the BEST possible night to be had. Shoutout to Luis who provided 6/5 star service. The bar is BEYOND lucky to have him!

Was in town for my friends birthday celebration. Started off here, we were the first ones there. Good music, and drinks was enough to get us on the dance floor. The staff was beyond friendly and attentive. They definitely made sure we were taken care of and my friend( the birthday girl) had a blast. Met some nice people. Definitely going back!!!

Google
I don't really like clubs but I had a good time at Good Night John Boy. The dance floor was packed and lots of people rubbed up against me. The music was so loud it caused topping out issues with the sound system. I went outside hoping to talk to people that hasn't happened yet.

Google
Really fun place. Great atmosphere. As someone vising from a small town I felt totally safe inside. Ample space to mingle even if you're not dancing. Awesome DJ and not sure if we just hit it in the perfect night but I couldn't have asked for a better playlist. Hits from the 90s and early 2000s.

Google
If I could give this place 10 stars I would! 💖 If you’re looking for some joy in a crazy world, come here! If you’re looking to reminisce on your disco days and be in good energy, come here! If you’re looking to dance out the stress of the week and have a reason to get dressed up, come here! Had my 35th birthday party at Good Night John Boy a few weeks ago and people are still talking about how much fun they had, how amazing they felt after 🪩 the staff + crew here is great, actually really good pizza in San Diego 🍕, and a groovy time for you to put on your boogie shoes and get dancin’! 😘 Thank you PJ 💜

Google
Hands down , one of the best clubs in San Diego. The 70s disco atmosphere and drinks are first rate and reasonably priced, the 70s,80s and 90s themed music are a throwback to younger days and the staff is beyond amazing. Make sure to ask for Brenda for any special occasion requests, she's the best in San Diego and will make sure you have a great time. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!!!!

Google
Editing to respond to business - you’re missing the point. A forced 20% gratuity AND forced entertainment fee is not cool. It doesn’t matter if the bartender is okay waking me through the charges, these hidden fees shouldn’t exist. If you’re providing such good value, own up to your displayed pricing and raise the costs of drinks. Drinks were okay and ambience was fine, but be warned they have a hidden “entertaining fee” as well as a “gratuity fee” they slide onto the check. Our party had 3 people… businesses have to stop with the junk fees. The drinks were already $15+ (very average)

Google
What an amazing experience! Went here for my Bachelor trip and had the most fun time with my groomsmen. The music, drinks, and environment were unmatched! We had a table for about 3 hours and the disco dolls were on top of getting us what we needed and coming out with a spectacular entrance with our bottle service. We met an owner named PJ and he was phenomenal! Really made the experience even better by showcasing then delicious food. The smash burgers and tenders were insane, best tenders I’ve ever had seriously. A visit to San Diego has to also include a visit to GNJB! We will be back to groove soon!

Yelp
The most fun I've had in a long time!!!!! I loooooove disco music and so happy this spot has brought back the awesome grooves and vibes. We danced the night away all the way until closing! I feel like in the nightclub scene, people are looking to just want to enjoy themselves and in most clubs they just stand around because of the atmosphere but here, people of all generations are dancing and having a good time (and being present not really on their phones!) They have a light up floor, disco ball, photo booth, jello shots, and fun bartenders to all add to a vibrant night out. Must go if you're downtown for a great time!!!

Yelp
GNJB, do better and train your employees to disclose ALL fees BEFORE charging your customers. We came here with a group on a Sunday for an r&b DJ. The night and place itself was a great vibe, great music, no cover. However, my husband was getting drinks at the bar and while he was waiting, he noticed the bar tender was charging customers first and THEN disclosing a tip was automatically added (20%) regardless of number of drinks or purchase amount. He also noticed that he was not being disclosed of the fee until after the fact. Its understandable if this is a standard set at an establishment but be honest to your customer before taking their money, dont be sneaky and disclose the fee after you charged them. Beware if you purchase here you automatically get charged an entertainment fee and a 20% gratuity.

Yelp
We began the TASTE OF THE GASLAMP 2025, at Goodnight John Boy. It's a nightclub straight out of the 1970's. Can you say, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER??? It must be a blast on the WEEKEND. We checked in early, at 12:10 PM. Easy Peasy. It wasn't crowded at all, except all the couches were taken. HOWEVER, we got one in a matter of minutes. We sat there till 1:00 PM, and PIZZA TIME. In the meantime, we were given TWO (2) VIP DRINKS, I gave mine to my partner. He ended up drinking only one. We got TWO Big Slices, one cheese and one pepperoni. I ate the CHEESE. It was delicious. I hadn't had one in a long time. As for my partner, he had the PEPPERONI. He thought his delicious, too. WE HAD PIZZA AGAIN AT THE NEXT STOP. For my partner, the second one was a little better!!! Nevertheless, GOODNIGHT John Boy brings the FUN, brings the 70's!!! THE DJ WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, I mean, AMAZING!!! It has a certain ambiance with lights and giant DISCO BALLS, and that music that is undeniably SISTER SLEDGE, DONNA SUMMER, and the BEEGEE's, and more. NOW, that's not to be missed.

Yelp
Went here this month two times already because it was so much fun the first time. The dance floor is lit up, with a really fun disco ball vibe. It's currently dazzled up with Christmas decor and we all just had the best time boogying the night away. First night went there was a Wednesday night with a lot more space then a Saturday night that was more crowded but they opened up the second story and ended up being perfect. Both nights full of music, dancing, silly people and even bubbles.

Yelp
Such a fun bar!! Happy hour has great prices The food was delicious. Tater tots super crispy and the pizza and burger was also very flavorful. The music and DJ was so fun. The service also was great and fast despite how busy it got!! Only downside is parking as it's down town so I'd recommend uberi g!!!

Yelp
Love the vibe of this retro club. The line to get drinks wasn't too long on a Friday night. Bartenders were nice. They played good retro music that was fun to dance to. I also love that they have a photo booth.

Jackie A.

Yelp
The DJ was boring. Just playing music that sounded like it all came from a romcom movie soundtrack. Ordered 2 margaritas and the menu stated $16 each. The total was almost $42 because they automatically add a 20% fee and still have the audacity to ask for a tip. Just put $20 dollars as the price for each margarita instead of hiding your fees! A girl in the dance floor was literally doing white powered lines in the empty dance floor and the employees didn't care even though she was clearly bothering other people by coming over to their table and trying to get them to join whatever vibe she had going on.

Yelp
This is such a fun spot to go dancing! Extra points for having water stations. The real highlight however, was the burger guy on the outdoor patio. $5 for a double?! Kenan was lovely, and the burger was delicious. All around great experience.

Yelp
I came here for the Christmas bar last night, what a terrible experience. The lady at the front door let my husband in for free merely minutes before me. She then charged my friends after my husband and before me $10 each for entry. Then she got to me and she said $20 please. I was like you just let my husband in for free and my friends in for $10 each. She looks at me and goes "$20 for you." My husband was standing right at the door and he said never mind let's just leave. She waves at me and goes "buh-bye!" What a B. Def didn't want to enter the establishment after that interaction.

Yelp
Went dancing here with my sweetheart and had a blast. If you love the Disco Era then you have to go. It's non-stop dancing to the best dance music. Drinks were wet and poured well.

Yelp
The dance floor is pretty fun. It's definitely a bit of an older crowd. Don't come here for the youngins
google avatar

Yelp
Great drinks and great space to dance your night away. Came here on a Friday night and parking was fairly easy (surprise!). It's almost Christmas season and all the cocktails are Christmas themed. The staff was decked out in Christmas outfits. The drinks were pretty, strong and delicious! At about $18 a glass, I think they're just slightly above the average price. Bartenders were friendly but they need more of them at peak times! There are multiple bars, at least 2 on the first floor and one on top. I like the spacious, open dance floor with a live DJ on an elevated platform and when you want to take a break, take a breather in the patio or go upstairs and explore the space. Highly recommend this place for a little Friday night fun.

Yelp
Although I still love the concept and consider this bar better than most in Gaslamp, I agree with a previous poster who stated that this isn't the Disco I was hoping for. The biggest issue with GNJB is the DJ. They play the same songs over and over in the span of a few hours. Come on guys, there are more disco songs out there than the 4 you keep playing. It makes you not want to go back because you already know what's on the playlist. I kid you not, when we went last Friday, they played HOTTOGO when we walked in, and less than an hour later it was on again, same with many other songs. If you are like me and crave a real disco, with actual disco songs (more than 4), go to Gimme Gimme Disco at House of Blues.

Yelp
A repeated catch phrase from The Waltons, a popular 1970s TV show, is also the name of this themed disco bar and night club from that decade. There are four other locations of Good Night John Boy, but this is the first one on the West Coast, let alone California. The Gaslamp Quarter space that it occupies featured four bars, two on the main floor and one each on the upper level and lower level. A dance floor with neon lit tiles and a requisite giant disco ball hanging above was to the front left when you walked in. A cocktail menu sheet featured 15 different libations. Canned and bottled beverages made up the top half of another sheet. The bottom of that page displayed the food choices which were provided by Sexton's, a partner of the business. Four types of pizza were not yet available so it was simply a burger or chicken tenders served with french fries or tater tots. The items came with a toy inside a cardboard Johnny Meal takeout box which was a riff on a McDonald's Happy Meal. A bartender recommended the tenders over the burger so I chose that along with the tater tots. Not that I needed it, but my meal box did not contain a toy which left my curiosity unresolved. The chicken and the tots were average as expected for bar food. The owners spent millions to refurbish the space, and it showed with the 70s-era decor like sofas and shag rugs. I think the food offerings do need to be upgraded to balance the lineup of drinks. The DJ spun some groovy tunes during my visit, however I hope more patronage will occur as people learn about the opening of Good Night John Boy.

Yelp
I have now been here twice for dancing and drinks on two weekend nights and have loved both times!! The vibes here are amazing!! It's the kinda place that you can dance at and enjoy yourself even if there aren't a ton of people on the dance floor. The dance floor is super fun and one of a kind considering this place is a little bit more casual compared to a night club. The DJs play good 70s/groovy style music and there's people of all ages, but primary 20s-30s from what I could tell. I did come here around 6PM both saturdays I went as more of a pregame but the later I've stayed the busier it's gotten. The drinks are decently strong and tasty. Def will be coming back for their Happy Hour menu which i've heard is good!

Yelp
I came to this spot when it was the Tin Roof and loved coming for the live music, but this is a fun spot too! I ordered the disco punch which was a rum punch, but it tasted mostly like juice. But you get to keep the disco cup so that's very neat! Hubs really liked his crown peach iced tea and said he would come back for it. Our friend ordered the espresso martini which they liked as well. The bartenders were helpful when we were trying to decide which drinks to order. The ambiance is very fun inside. We went on a Friday at 6:30p so we weren't able to see how lively it potentially gets. I loved the dance floor and the disco ball. The music has you wanting to dance the entire time you're in there. I hope to go back another time for dancing!

Yelp
So incredibly fun! Love the theme, loved the private space in front of the huge Farrah Fawcett print, loved the music! I'm cheap, so I felt like the cost of the bottle service was astronomical, but normal drinks were fine. I can see what people go out here and celebrate big occasions! It was also decorated for the holidays when we went which felt like a plus up. Check it out!
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
I came here to see what the hype was about when they turned good night John boy into holiday bar. This place is one of the magical places to visit one celebrating the holidays. It's so cute and decorated if you're feeling hungry, they serve pizza and burgers. If you need help finding out what to drink, the bartenders are very knowledgeable and help you find what you're into. Definitely must try the drink inside the disco ball because you could take it home. Get ready for the holidays.

Yelp
Good Night John Boy is a dance bar in the Gaslamp area of Downtown San Diego that serves cocktails among other drinks with music. Ambiance-wise: Good Night John Boy keeps a disco vibe in the setup, decor, and drinks. At the time of this review, they currently have their holiday theme going with Christmas decorations and drinks. The bar is two stories, and has multiple bars to order drinks (I believe there are four separate bars to order from). Downstairs has various places to sit, and there is a disco themed dance-floor at the front. Upstairs has some seating and is set up with a view of the downstairs. In the two times I've been here, there has been a DJ spinning mainly disco music with some pop and house remixes sprinkled in. One critique I have for the music being played is that it's usually limited to the same pop disco playlist, and that within the couple hours we were there, the DJ would repeat the same songs on multiple occasions. Overall though, think the theme is cool and kind of unique compared to the other bars in the Gaslamp area. Not common you see disco-centric bars here. All clubs/dance bars are generally loud, but I felt like the music here was a notch too loud, though. Drinks-wise: They serve a variety of different cocktails that were also themed. I had the espresso martini and it was pretty strong on the coffee. I liked that they served a variety of different sizes on the canned and bottled beers. I enjoyed drinking basically a 40 of beer while on the dance-floor. Service-wise: the bartenders here were pretty solid considering how busy it was. Some of them wear earplugs because the music is very loud, so there were times they couldn't hear what I was saying, but that's less on them and more on the environment. In summary: From my two visits here, Good Night John Boy definitely has some potential to be a fantastic dance bar but there were just a few easily fixable things that I feel knocked them down a couple notches for me. Regardless, I think it's a good option as a quick stop if you and your friends are looking for a fun disco bar, but I don't think it's a place that I would recommend as a full night out spot yet.

Yelp
We went on Saturday night so it was super crowded. Things that hit: The decor is so cute! Very 70s/80s, on the mark! Loved the light up dancefloor and disco balls. A very nice outdoor area. All the staff are kind and chill people. The bar rotated out quickly! Never waited too long for drinks. The upstairs option is nice. Loved that the crowd wasn't just 21-25 year olds. Things that missed the mark: The dance floor was PACKED with people just standing around. Most of the crowd was too young to have watched Soul Train and it showed lol. Jokes aside, I wasn't impressed by the DJ. The club is disco themed, but the night we went the DJ played mostly EDM even though there's so much old school & nudisco to choose from. I was disappointed in that regard and that's why I'm giving 3 stars. I was looking forward to dancing to disco all night long.
google avatar

Nathalie H.

Yelp
So fun!!! We went tonight and it was a completely decked out pop up Christmas bar. Large light up dance stage and a DJ. Super fun and creative holiday cocktails. If you are looking for somewhere to put you into the Christmas spirit this is your place. Upstairs and downstairs but plan on standing as this is a very popular place

Danielle P.

Yelp
Went on a Saturday night and several lounge areas were OFF LIMITS -$10 entry fee -No Seat Covers in the Ladies Restroom... Makes the line go by even slower -No drinks on gated patio. Beer pong table set up but couldn't play until I finished my $15 drink -Just my preference but the music wasn't Great. Was waiting for a good dancing song the majority of the night
google avatar

Sofia B.

Yelp
The drinks were alll sooo good. The vibe was fun The djs kinda played the same songs but overall the music was decent.

Yelp
Fun bar in the heart of downtown to get your festivities on. I expected a little bit more decorations based off the line outside but it was worth a wait!

Yelp
Grill daddy aka keenan was SO sweet, he served up the best hot dogs and burgers. Good night john boy is always consistent with the straight 70s-90s bangers HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Joseph O.

Yelp
Best bar to have fun and just dance and Keenen with grill daddy made such an amazing burger, not many places downtown where you can have a drink and a good grilled burger
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
Super chill night with an awesome crowd. There was a server working the room handing out free hamburgers. The bartender was knowledgeable and friendly and the service was great. We loved the light, open feel of the club.

Yelp
Honestly the most fun my girlfriends and I have had out in a long time! The Dj did a great job playing disco hits and mixing in more current music. The owner is super nice too!! We will be back(:

Kelly Ann B.

Yelp
I think it is epic that someone finally wants to appeal to old school days and disco theme.. So fun, danced so much and the food and atmosphere, yah nailed it, thanks. Lovely. See yahs soon again.

Yelp
I came here when it used to be The old tin roof so we decided to check it out under the new ownership. Ambience is pretty cool with a 70s vibe, disco ball and disco flooring. Lots of bright lights in the music was pretty good, but they didn't play a lot of new stuff. We saw lots of large groups and bridal parties here who bought some tables around the dance floor. There was a whole upstairs area that was not being used when we went around 9:30 PM . Very cute decor. They also have a photo booth in there that's about $10 to use. Just note that it definitely picks up at 10 o'clock and there's typically a $10 cover. Drinks are pretty strong. I didn't get a chance to taste the food, but good place to people watch for sure. It could definitely use some more seating for those who did not buy a table but there's two bars and the bartenders are pretty attentive.
google avatar

Vivian R.

Yelp
What a fun bar! This place is a 70s themed bar and has the cutest vibes. They have a light up dance floor, which is always fun. We ordered bottle service and our bottle girls were so kind. I will definitely be back when I'm wanting to get my disco on!
google avatar

Brett P.

Yelp
Look I'm old so any place that plays music I have actually heard and I'm happy. Unlike a lot of clubs Good Night John Boy has plenty of room to dance huge lighted dance floor over sized disco ball. The DJ kept everyone on their feet and happy. The Friday night we were there it was packed but the bar tenders were on fire they got to everyone in good time and even remembered what people were ordering including us when we came back two days later. Usually clubs tend to have a snobby elitist vibe, this place was very friendly and welcoming. If I had one small critic and really this is any club there is never enough places to just sit down unless you pay for bottle service which again as I said I'm old and have back issues so I need to rest now and then. But I have to say as bottle service prices go this place seemed to be more affordable so that is a plus.

Amanda A.

Yelp
I'm not a big club person, but this place was pretty fun. They had a good mix of music playing and a really fun disco aesthetic. I was also able to get a drink pretty quickly considering how packed this place was. Plus, they have a guy selling $2 hotdogs on the outdoor patio. I think he sold burgers, too, but the hotdog really hit the spot.
google avatar

Judith H.

Yelp
The most groovy, disco bar ever!! PJ the owner had done an amazing job! Great food, organic ingredients, djs are great. He booked Anderson Paak aka dj pee wee for wonder fest weekend and it was a sold out night! So so so much fun!! The dance floor I lights up, and there's like 3 or 4 bars you can order drinks at! It's two levels too!! Will def come back & bring all my out of town friends!
google avatar

Liz E.

Yelp
This place was so much fun! Great music, fun drinks and the decoration during Christmas time was so festive! We came early so it wasn't overly packed. They had 3 open bar areas so drinks were flowing! Great time! I'm definitely coming back!

Olivia M.

Yelp
Saturday hotdogs gotta be the best hot dogs I've had in a MINUTE!!! Dude making was so chill best vibes.

Yelp
Our experience was fun! I think we came on a day where it wasnt too crowded thankfully; so we had a great time. Very fun concept, well decorated and we even enjoyed our adult happy meal, which was surprisingly tasty. The concept is clever. It made me want to bring my mom who is an OG disco lover and dancer. The problem was the music was repeating the same old songs over and over and missed so many upbeat fun danceable disco ones. They played a lot of boring 80's slow happy songs that nobody knew how to dance to for too long, and when they played a good song or a Millennial banger, everyone got excited but they quickly changed the song or over-mixed it, making everyone stop dancing again. It was very confusing. I think the DJ needed work but it was back in December so maybe it's better now. I tried to book a table for my bday and it was hard to get a hold of someone so I ended up not doing it. We sat by the dance floor which was a lot of fun. The drinks were tasty and the bar tenders were kind. I liked that the drinks didnt taste like cheap alcohol. I also like that there wasnt very drunk people in there so the atmosphere was classy and not gross. Overall definitely want to try again! Def a good place to bring your girlfriends maybe even dress up from the 70's.

Karina G.

Yelp
terrible DJ, and the staff completely ignores any requests. every time you ask for something, they tell you to go somewhere else

Hannah L.

Yelp
Came for a Bachelorette party great atmosphere and music! We had bottle service and it was a wonderful experience, they were on top of being more mixers and water as well as cleaning up used glasses! Will definitely return next time I'm in SD!

Joseph L.

Yelp
The drag shows here are absolutely so much fun!!! The host is amazing and the bar staff make amazing drinks too! Love the ambience and the vibe of this place. So much joy, and nothing better than a disco bar with a fabulous drag queen!
google avatar

Diane L.

Yelp
Mel ignored me and my friends. We all witnessed that she didn't serve colored people and it was very obvious waiting 30 minutes. We made it clear a few times and addressed it to the other bartender. White privileged!!!! Beware!

Token L.

Yelp
Grill daddy made me a burger and he was great. very personable. 100% customer service and good food. go here and give grill daddy a raise

Deandre B.

Yelp
Service was amazing! Great service for the bartender Evan he does a great job and shows great customer service yall visit for him!

Yelp
Good drinks and ambiance! Was totally a vibe!!! I would recommend this place 10/10! If anyone can get back to me about the photographer who took pics on April 26th please let me know! She took pics of me and my friends and would like to retrieve it! Ty in advance (:

Yelp
I can only speak to being at this premise for about 20 minutes on a recent Saturday around 530pm waiting for a nearby music venue to open. I did like that the bouncer was pleasant and allowed my wife to use the restroom. The decor, music, tv videos and multiple secluded hangout areas upstairs were fascinating. There was a prelude to Deep Throat playing on a trippy tv within a tv on the wall. Grateful it was only a preview. My wife and I got a kick out of the disco ball and the dance floor that lights up. They had rotary phones on the wall and the strangest yet cool wallpaper from the 70s. I can imagine this is a great place to both trip out and check out. We didn't order any drinks or food unfortunately. I would like to come back when it's kicking in the evenings.

Leah B.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Great drinks, retro prices especially during happy hour, and the coolest vibe ever. I could come here every week. The staff is super nice and attentive. I almost don't want to review it because I don't want it to get so big that I can't come here whenever I want, but this place deserves to be known. Food, drinks, dancing, lounging - it has something for everyone. It's definitely one of one in the best way possible.

C L.

Yelp
I had the BEST time here last Saturday!! We had a table/bottle service and honestly the music & the vibes were literally so much fun. The staff was so friendly & helpful. Their drinks were so yum! I can't wait to come back!

Sonny K.

Yelp
Alexa is the best host for bottle service ! Super friendly, fun, professional, attentive and on top of it .
