My boyfriend and I wanted to get some food before hitting the road to head back to GR from Lansing, and a friend recommended Good Truckin' Diner. I'm so glad she did, because it's a new favorite for sure!
I had read some Yelp reviews of GTD before, so I knew it was a small place and we should get there early on a Sunday. We grabbed a two-top right when we arrived around 8 am and the place was full shortly after. The whole diner only holds about 25 people, tops. The menu is inventive without being over the top and still includes all the classic favorites. There are a few wonderful things about the menu:
+all the Classics come with potatoes, choice of meat, AND choice of toast
+you can get the other egg options as an omelette OR a burrito (omelettes come with potatoes and toast, burritos come with potatoes only)
+you can get lunch or breakfast at any time when they're open
I love all the options for such a tiny place. I ordered the Mona's as an omelette (applewood bacon, mushrooms, tomato, onions, cheddar topped with hollandaise sauce) and my boyfriend got the Roscoe burrito (scrambled eggs, fried chicken, chopped waffles, bacon & syrup). We had fun watching the other customers' food coming out - everything looked amazing! The flat top, prep station, and oven are all right out in the open so you can watch them cook too, really fun.
Our food was not super quick to come out, but it was definitely worth any wait! The omelette was super thin, almost crepe-like egg wrapped around some wonderful fresh ingredients. I don't like those big puffy omelettes with pancake batter in them, I prefer French omelettes - this was pretty close to that and so delicious. The bacon was plentiful, the mushrooms were perfectly cooked, and the tomato was just a light touch. The only complaint I had was the hollandaise - it was a little runny and not super flavorful, but everything else was so good I didn't really care. I'm not a huge home fry person, but the potatoes were great. My boyfriend's burrito was also great - a little dry inside but with some additional syrup it was just fine.
Our server was great and brought us our check immediately, which I appreciate. We wanted to eat and get out in order to make room for others to enjoy this wonderful place! We spent about $25 including tip, which is a great value for the amount of food you get and the quality of the food. I am definitely putting this on my regular rotation for the next time I'm in the area!
