"Old Town’s frozen custard shop in a 90-year-old ice house celebrates the apple cider doughnut all year with The Big Apple — a “donutwich” that sandwiches vanilla custard between a halved apple cider doughnut with a caramel drizzle. Apple cider bundt cakes are a new fall feature this year. Pre-orders are available via direct message on Instagram." - Tierney Plumb

"Brandon Byrd, the owner of Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats, is an innovator when it comes to ice cream sandwiches. His custard serves as the filling between donuts (a donutwich) and brownies (a browniewich). After starting as a food truck, he just opened a Goodies frozen custard stand in Old Town Alexandria in a renovated historic ice house." - China Riddle, Lisa Ruland

Perhaps the cutest and most inviting establishment in Old Town! A great and delicious selection of frozen custard and treats with amazing customer service. The ambiance and scenery brings you in with the bright flowers into a very private area with a good number of seats. I had a pineapple and rum cake custard and it was truly, truly delicious. The other custard was a "Boogie Woogie" (turtle) that was very rich and creamy. I cannot wait to return and try their other flavors. To add, they do have a "Virginia is for lovers" painted if you can take a picture there with it!

Google
This place was good. You have to have cash. I didn’t and the owner allowed me to cash app or zelle(i can’t remember) the cost to him and still allowed me to get something. It was very yummy and filling. It’s in old town Alexandria. Cute location. Nice area and they had music playing so you could actually just chill out but we took it to go. I will be back.

Google
This place is awesome. The guy that works here never turned none of us away. So nice and professional. The pineapple upside down cake ice cream was so good and plentiful. My son loved his cookies and crème shake. I will be going back to try other things. I loved the sunflowers outside along with some good ol music playing.

Google
We enjoyed this place. The ice cream was simple, but good. It is kind of expensive. We spent $24 for 2 small sundaes with chocolate syrup and a small chocolate ice cream. It took a little while to get served even though we were 2nd in line. Nice location. I would recommend this place.

Google
Family outing for Mother’s Day 2024. Beautiful weather accompanied by the best custard treats we’ve ever had. I partook in a milkshake (peanut butter one), hubs had the apple pie dessert and mini had sorbet. Everything was flavorful, especially the sorbet…taste just like a mango, sweet and tart, and the consistency was creamy. The customer service was really good. Owner came out to chat with customers and turn on some music. Seating is minimal was accommodating. One drawback — CASH ONLY. But an ATM is available in a nearby deli at the King St. and S. West.

Google
This is the cutest corner shop I have seen in a while! I loved stopping here for a quick sweet treat. The frozen custard is delicious and the atmosphere is charming. A must-see for Old Town. Note that it is cash only, so come prepared!

Google
Wonderful little spot in old town! The custard/sundaes are delicious, the space is a little oasis filled with sunflowers, and staff is so kind and helpful. Cash only and limited hours, but very much worth a visit.

Google
I have had frozen custard around the United States and this is by far one of the very best and is made on site. Amazing flavor and creamy texture. You certainly cannot beat the beautiful atmosphere which is certainly the best in old-town. It's a highly recommend from me and a place I will frequent often. I look forward to having some of the specialities in the future. The owner is very personable and passionate about his frozen custard.

Yelp
Upon arriving to Woodies you'll notice they've got a nice retro aesthetic as well as friendly staff. We got chocolate custard and it was really good. I love sprinkles.

Ankush K.

Yelp
Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats exemplifies what it means to have a restaurant. The service is impeccable, earning a solid 10/10. The staff is friendly, attentive, and always on point. The decor is charming and nostalgic, making you feel like you've stepped back in time - another 10/10. The food aka the ice cream, is simply divine. The frozen custard is creamy, rich, and bursting with flavor - definitely a 10/10. The vibes are fantastic, with a perfect blend of nostalgia and a welcoming atmosphere, making it a 10/10 experience overall. And to top it all off, the prices are reasonable, making it a great value for the quality you receive. If you're in the area, Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats is a must-visit!

Yelp
Oh my gawd! Hidden gem you are! I am absolutely a fan of custard and most custard places are almost just like ice cream. Not custard- like, this place? I was fortunate enough to try this as a Yelp Elite member! The actual vanilla was tasted so good and the scoop to try was the perfect amount for me as i can't eat much frozen creamy things. There was no freezer burn taste. It was so fresh and the spot is so cute and danity. I cannot wait to come back to try more menu items! THIS WAS REAL CUSTARD!! UGH I WANT MORE THINKING ABOUT IT! The only downfall? I was unsure of where to go to order as the order window was so tiny and the curtains were shut. I accidently tried to open the door to the back. *not sure if the man that assisted me was the owner, but he wasn't really nice... did not seem like he wanted to take my order and very closed off. Luckily the custard turned my disappointment upside down.*

Susan

Yelp
Yum, yum, YUM!! Of all the ice cream places I've tried in old town I think this one takes the cake!!! Holy SMOKES! Got the cream soda float (and I instantly love any business that serves cream soda, so I may be biased) and the jitterbug (Reese's / peanut butter). Next summer I will be returning, mark my words. The building is SO CUTE and I LOVE the flower pots. Loved the Motown music and the man at the window was very kind.

Will M.

Yelp
I found this hidden gem thanks to Yelp. Loved the old school decor. Window service was very friendly. This frozen custard is lighter than regular ice cream but richer than soft served. Great praline and nutty flavors but the frozen custard was still the star. Check out this place for your dessert fix.

Shaila A.

Yelp
Amazing frozen custard/dessert spot! I love the seating area and the concept! I got the big apple which sandwiches the frozen custard with two halves of an apple cider doughnut! Super yummy just fyi this is a cash only establishment

Daniel T.

Yelp
Very cute place in the old town. No indoor seating as it's just a little truck/stand with a few small tables in front. Service is great. I had the vanilla custard and banana pudding...my favorite dessert. The custard comes with sprinkles, which I'm usually not a fan of. The sprinkles here for some reason tasted better than most and I didn't mind the added crunch. The banana pudding was a bit too sweet for my taste. Also, the bottom of the container was kind of liquidy. Not a total loss, it was still pretty good. I've just had better at other places.

Isabella C.

Yelp
Custard is AMAZING. The owner is friendly & the custard is so authentic & creamy-tasting. Sundaes were amazing. Want to try a donutwich & chocolate custard‍ Just make sure you have cash because it's cash only! Cute seating area surrounded by pretty sunflowers

Zack G.

Yelp
Very solid custard sold from the window of a very old-school and ornately decorated spot Ample outdoor seating They only have chocolate & vanilla flavors, but they haver a few different types of treats such as flavored milkshakes, a donut stuffed with ice cream, and a cupcake stuffed with ice cream Cash-only!

Teri K.

Yelp
So super cute, cozy spot. I had the Apple Pie A La Mode, and it was INSANELY DELICIOUS!!!! As you can see from my pic, it didn't stand a chance! I was concerned that the caramel drizzle was going to make it to sweet, but boy was I wrong! The apple pie hands down the best that I've had! It was the perfect combination of crispy chewy crust, and made to perfection! The owner was holding it down by himself and he would personal bring your order to you then follow up asking how you like it! A MUST!!!!!!

Jerelyne T.

Yelp
Let me start by saying! The ice cream and donuts were delicious. It was a bit much for me having the second full donut I would be good with just one donut. I definitely understand why this company is named as one of the best ice cream parlors in the DMV area by Thrillst. This rating is actually want made me drive 36 minute for this ice cream. I ordered the peach cobbler custardwich, and a strawberry milkshake. Both were soooooo good! If I am in the area I would definitely would like to try a root bear float. The wait is pretty long on a hot Saturday, but worth the wait. It seems like every order is made by hand from frying the donuts to mixing the ingredients for toppings etc etc. The employees put a lot of car in their presentation. Customer service is superb, and the outdoor seating gives old country picnic vibes.

Brandi B.

Yelp
I've had this place saved on my list for a while. I came right when they opened at noon. I tried a caramel Sunday. Very delicious on a hot summer day!

Tasnia H.

Yelp
Delicioussss custard and I lived in Wisconsin for theee years! Smaller portions and they're opening back up for the summer! Owner is from Detroit and is an absolute blast to chat with!

Annette I.

Yelp
Wow! I saw a news feature on the historic Ice House building and admired the efforts of the ice cream business owner to preserve history. I went for the history but I'll come back for the ice cream. I had pecans, caramel, and fudge on a small serving of chocolate. So rich and delicious! It turned out that the owner served us and his service was perfect. I highly recommend!

Tiffani M.

Yelp
I always wanted to come here because I heard great things about this place. I wasn't disappointed. I had the pineapple and rum cake with vanilla custard. It tasted so scrumptious. I was not disappointed. The service was excellent. It's a family business that started in Washington DC but moved to Alexandria, VA. They have outdoor seating and it's cash only business. They will take Zelle if you forgot your cash.

Chris S.

Yelp
THIS IS A CASH ONLY SHOP. Honestly the best damn custard not only in Virginia, but the best custard I've ever had. The owner Brandon is a very funny guy and he plays music from the inside of the shop. Must haves- the Big Apple ( 2 donuts with homemade custard in the center topped with homemade caramel.) The shakes are amazing too! And the pop comes from Wisconsin! Tell them Chris sent you!

ShanR E.

Yelp
I had been seeing this place on social media and have driven past many times. Decided to stop by today right when they opened and I'm so glad I did. Wait time was short (typically there's a line). They have the specials and regular menu items posted and be mindful they are CASH ONLY, so stop by the ATM or bank before you come. I was torn between the peach cobbler donut-which and the lemon pound cake which but I opted for the lemon pound cake and it was so Devine, I def made the right choice! Omg that cake is to die for. I would come back just to buy that. Portions are a nice size, so you can honestly share it. This is a hidden gem in Alexandria and I'll def be back to have more lemon cake and try the peach cobbler donut which. Keep serving up the goodies Goodies :)

Abegail A.

Yelp
No matter the weather, frozen custard is always a good idea! This was my first time trying Wisconsin-style custard, and it won't be my last. Goodies definitely know how to do it right! I tried the red velvet donutwich (vanilla Wisconsin-style custard sandwiched between a red velvet donut) hit the spot. I liked how the donut remained soft the entire time and how the custard velvety/not overly sweet. The Boogie Woogie (a turtle pecan sundae) was devoured immediately so I didn't get to try it, but it looked and smelled fantastic. In addition to the sweet treats, I loved the vibe, decor, and hospitality. If no one is at the window, knock on the counter and someone magically appears. The individual was patient and offered suggestions when I couldn't decide. Although it was too cold to enjoy my ice cream at Goodies, they do have some seating in a nicely decorated patio just steps from where you order. Finding street parking can be a challenge, but don't give up because the custard/sweet treats are worth it! Pro tip: Bring cash or be ready to pay with Apple cash.

Emily H.

Yelp
Ice cream here is the real deal, everything tastes homemade! The service is kind and friendly and this is a great spot for a sweet treat. Highly recommend the apple pie! FYI, cash is the preferred payment method but they also accept a few forms of cash-app-type payments.

Nicole B.

Yelp
Got the jitterbug, which is a vanilla and pb shake and split it with him. Came during the hotter part of Sunday when there was a moderate crowd, not full, as this place hasn't officially opened up yet. Gotta say, there is time for some improvements. The printed menu is rather brief. And sticking to what you're good at isn't a bad thing, but it seems like you can just get custard in a cup is available, but not printed on the menu. As I was not aware of that, we got the shake where I would have liked to try just the custard. It appeared that only one person was working and the wait was... well, slow. While we waited, it became clear that all the shady spots were taken while more than half of their seating remained open, bc it was the under the blazing heat of the sun. This was cash only and their ticketing system consisted of the worker calling out the order, which hopefully isn't the same as what the person ordered before you or there may be confusion.. Not sure that I would return unless I was passing by and there's no line. ‍

J D.

Yelp
The frozen custard with peanutbutter cup and kit kat topping was so good and the service was great!

Carla B.

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit Goodies for a long time. I tried their red velvet dessert at Truckeroo YEARS ago and it was so amazing. I'm glad they have a storefront to visit. Parking can be a bit rough but there is street parking available within walking distance. I ordered the Big Apple with the apple cider donut. It was delicious and the price was reasonable. There's seating available but I took mine to my car to devour in peace. They only accept Apple Pay or cash so that's good to keep in mind. I didn't know before visiting but I'm glad I recently started using Apple Pay. I'm definitely going back.

Yelp
Goodies has been a long time coming for us. We put it on the radar just as the 23' summer began because my partners friend had been (4+ times) and said it was worth the trip. We finally got there Saturday, 10/28/23. We went post dinner at a restaurant we wanted to get to in the area so we thought we would kill two birds with one stone. Our initial Goodies experience was not worth the trip. We live in an area with pretty good ice cream and two local ice cream shops that we frequent. So, our standards are pretty high if we have to factor in things like travel. My partner got a milkshake and I got the Boogie Woogie. It was by no means bad just not worth the hour plus trip for ice cream. After expressing our disappointment to my partners friend she told us we did it wrong. We'd ordered the wrong things. We doubled back the next day 10/29/23 because I'd left my glasses at the restaurant we went to the night before. We got it right with trip number two. We ordered what the people come for, the custard sandwich! We got the Big Apple. It was hot and fresh. There was no real fruit in it and my partner enjoyed that a lot because she doesn't like warm fruit. The vanilla custard was the perfect addition to the apple cider cake donut. The customer service was top tier. I'm assuming it was a father and his son. I enjoyed that local business vibe we got with the personal care to their customers. We highly recommend. Get one of the Custardwich's, you can't wrong!

Yelp
I've been following their Instagram page for a while and added them to my list of black owned businesses to try. I was able to experience their frozen custard this week at an agency event. The special of the day, a Black Velvet Sundae. The owner, Brandon, started to tell me what this sundae consisted of, and honestly, after I heard the words "dark chocolate," I was hooked! YES, this was as good as it looks!! You can see the delicious dark chocolate cupcake with a rich dark chocolate frosting on top of a generous scoop of vanilla frozen custard with a drizzle of chocolate fudge sauce that had me drooling! What you can't see is the dark chocolate Brownie with unexpected chocolate chips that all of this delciousness was built on!! OMG! That first spoonful had some of all the parts, and it was a little bit of heaven, all the way to the last bite. It was the perfect balance of sweetness and textures. The Black Velvet Sundae is a must have for dark chocolate lovers and dessert lovers alike. Although there were other food trucks out, Brandon and his team did a great job explaining their offerings, they provided samples of their frozen custard, had great energy and excellent service. I am looking forward to visiting their storefront soon to enjoy more of those epic looking desserts I see popping up on my Instagram feed!

Kenneth A.

Yelp
Root beer milk shake brought back some nostalgia. The service was top notch. Great music and outdoor patio to put you in the mood with your chilled milk shake.

Kevin M.

Yelp
It's hard to miss Goodies even it's a block off King St. The blue building is eye-catching, and the beautiful garden beds were full of colorful tulips. Cash only, so make sure to hit an ATM, but boy it was worth it (I would have gone twice if I had time). The owner was offering samples of their delicious frozen custard to passersby. I ordered a Juke Box sundae, and I was so pleased. Despite the sugary ingredient list, it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet, in part due to the smooth, rich, creamy custard buried beneath toppings and fudge sauce. The owner was so warm and friendly, and a daper dressed to boot! The perfect treat for a warm sunny day, or any day really!

Art C.

Yelp
Yummy custard but nothing mind blowing and pretty overpriced. They are cash-only and don't list any prices on the menu so you won't find out how much your order costs until you wait in a long line. The vanilla is supposedly from vanilla bean but I didn't notice any of the bean in mine. There were nice vibes and good music and a big patio to sit on though. Overall, not worth the cost but nice enough.

Saha S.

Yelp
We were in Old Town Alexandria and decided to come here after lunch. They had some really unique ice desserts which were all delicious. Note that they only take cash. Otherwise, the ice cream here is excellent, and it's worth coming here when you're in the area.

Ajia L.

Yelp
What a treat! My whole experience at Goodie's was wonderful. I came here on a Friday, early afternoon after a work event in the area. It'a been on my list to try for quite some time, and I just so happened to walk by on my way to and from my car. It definitely stands out on the corner of a side street right off of King St in Old Town. There's an undeniable old charm and friendliness. It is essentially an ice cream stand with a big front yard, and some picnic tables. They have quite a few tried and true menu staples, and just as many seasonal or special items. Unfortunately, their more crafty items tend to be available only on Saturdays and Sundays (at least that's what the attendant said). I decides to try The Big Apple after I sampled their custard. The server was so kind and was great to talk to. He also answered all my questions. I can't wait to come back again and hopefully can snag one of their peach cobbler items. A true Summer staple!

James H.

Yelp
Delicious custard! The custard scene in Alexandria is pretty underrated and this is one of my favorite places I've been to. I was unaware of this place just because I spend most of my time in Alexandria closer to the water. I came around noon on a Sunday and there was no wait. I ordered the big red donut sandwich and devoured it in 3 minutes. The red velvet donut was perfect, delicate but held the custard in between well. The custard was very smooth and wasn't too sweet. The chocolate drizzle was perfect to tie everything together. Overall, a great experience and I will definitely come here again to try other items. There is a cute seating area right in the front, perfect for small groups. If you dine out in alexandria, save some room and make the extra effort to go to this place after.

Ruth T.

Yelp
I've had nothing short of amazing and delicious experiences at Goodies. My favorite treat is the Boogie Woogie or usually the specials like homemade rum cake! If you see it on IG stories, RUN to Goodies!! You won't be disappointed. I've also tried the Nutter Butter sundae, many different donutwiches, and the Juke Box. All great choices. The kindest humans operate this spot and I can't say enough about them too. Uncle takes his time interacting with each person who comes through and preparing their orders. Each time I visit I feel like more than a costumer, I feel like family. A moment I was particularly touched by was observing him hold space for a child paying on their own and listening as they excitedly shared their weekend. My heart melted. Children deserve to be seen as whole people. Brandon will occasionally sell his homemade caramel and dinners (recently was jerk chicken, mac n cheese, green beans and cornbread) and has looked out and saved me a jar or a plate when I've reached out. Everything is so, SO good!! It's spectacular! The patio is the most gorgeous place to sit and enjoy the treats. This place can get busy and while I wait, I love listening to the music played on the speaker, when it's on. They play all the classics! On a few Sundays I've gone after church, it was Gospel so I got round two of worship! Haha! I've been during slower moments and once, Uncle had come out and gardened and talked about his process. They'll tend to it through the seasons. To name a few, you may see tulips in the spring and giant elephant ears and marigolds in the fall. Just a beautiful space! When you visit Goodies you truly feel the labor of love and bright spirit each time you visit. It's like a frozen custard and treats community ministry.

Unique C.

Yelp
Great friendly service and wonderful summertime treats. I had the peach donut custard sandwich that was delicious! Very nostalgic outdoor creamery! Can't wait to come back next summer!

Mara D.

Yelp
If you are in the area-you must try this establishment!!! It's absolutely DELISH!! We ordered the root beer float - yum and the brownie sandwich - double yum!!!! Service was great and love the vibe/decor. Street parking and outdoor seating. Def go when it opens to get the favorites before they sell out. Oh...don't forget to take cash.

Casheta L.

Yelp
Goodies serves the best frozen custard in the DMV area. My favorite was the Big Apple, apple cider donut, vanilla custard & caramel drizzle. Very friendly and courteous staff. I loved the Wisconsin theme. Take a trip to Old Town and get you a special treat!

Alicia W.

Yelp
I have a custard obsession! Coming to the area to visit friends I found Goodies on instagram. The visit definitely lived up to the photos. The location is so cute, ordering at the window and then sitting at street side tables people watching. Everything our group ordered tasted amazing. I'll be back every time I visit the area.

Roy A.

Yelp
Came to get a treat, this is a lovely relaxing corner to enjoy some delicious treats. The wife picked the raspberry sorbet and I went with the nutritious Oreo shake. My paper straw could handle the Oreo so I had to spoon it out. The sorbet was amazing. They only accept cash or Apple Cash. Lovely spot.

Ryan C.

Yelp
Seen a bunch of reviews online about how crazy the desserts were so we had to make our way eventually. We came on a late Sunday afternoon, couple hours before they closed. Parking looked rough but found something on the street, right around the corner. There were only 3-4 people in line but since there was only one person making everything to order, it took some time but it was worth the wait in my opinion. Make sure you bring cash or have your Zelle/Apple Cash set up to avoid any snags. The menu isn't too big but from what I've seen, it all looked pretty good. We opted for the Red Velvet Donutwich with Chocolate Custard (ran out of Vanilla) and the Jitterbug shake also with Chocoalte Custard. Our order only took about 5~ minutes. There is a decent amount of outdoor seating and they also have some cool decorations around their place too. The Jitterbug was probably one of the best peanut butter chocolate shakes I've ever had. Most shakes are usually too thick and can't be drank through a straw but this was so smooth and creamy. It was like drinking a frosty peanut butter chocolate milk. I only had a bite of the Donutwich but my girlfriend really liked it. A great cake donut and of course that velvety custard. It was a little pricey per item but I would definitely come back and try one of their other items. The man who helped us, despite being the only one working, was cranking out each item in a good amount of time and was also very friendly.

Rozell M.

Yelp
Excellent Product and customer service. This is a hidden gem. The ambience speaks for itself.

Steph W.

Yelp
Set back behind King Street this place did not disappoint. We split the big apple seasonal donut sundae. The donut was soft and warm and the caramel drizzle pulled it all together. The custard was very creamy. Would absolutely get it again. We sat outside on a nice fall day and the staff brought the order outside for us to receive.

Larry M.

Yelp
Trying to get a quote for an upcoming event. How do I get in touch with you. Thanks!

David M.

Yelp
A long line was a good sign. Goodies is located slightly off King Street on Commerce St. and the view takes you back in time. The staff is very pleasant. I tried a brownie sandwich (but cannot remember its name) and it was delicious, even on a hot day.

Jasmine R.

Yelp
I went on a Sunday afternoon and the 45 minute wait (getting in line to receiving the dessert) was well worth it. I got the Brownie-wich with vanilla custard. Everything about it was amazing!! The custard was smooth, soft, and had a great flavor. The bottom brownie had chocolate chips mixed in and I loved the added crunch. The customer service was great and everyone was extremely nice. There are a few tables, chair, and benches around to sit outside and eat. Also, be mindful that they only take cash (preferred) or Apple Cash (Apple Cash is different than Apple Pay. Apple Cash you text/send the payment to the phone number they provide.) 10/10 recommend!!

Ken C.

Yelp
First, cash only!!! Don't expect you will see ATM anywhere nearby the shop. They only only from noon to 6pm and four days a week, and only in summer. It was an expensive after brunch snack. Today, I think the cashier might be the owner granddaughter. Overall it is the expensive and enjoy the oldie music while chilling with ice-cream.

Mike M.

Yelp
Excellent and attentive staff, very nice as well. This is walk up only. You do have about 6/7 tables and chairs for sitting, but that's about it. I wanted the red velvet which, but they were sold out, so I got the browniewhich ($10) Brownie was okay, custard was good though, will be back to try more. Only accepts cash and Apple cash (not to be confused with Apple Pay).

Nancy L.

Yelp
Custard was good. I just find it crazy that there are no prices listed. We got a scoop of chocolate custard and a shake total was $18. Seems a bit pricey for what we got. It being a cash only place seems like a good idea to have prices listed so you are sure to have enough money. Won't be going back.

Yelp
My fiancé and I went to Goodies frozen custard. I was excited because I saw a lot of people walking out with the rum cakewich but as I was in line, they ran out. I'm not sure if this is common, but we were in line after 6pm and they still took our order. They only accept zelle, cash, or Apple Cash. This was an amazing visit and I am a huge fan of this place. Definitely worth the wait.

Yelp
Really great frozen custard! It was big enough to share with two other. Highly recommend if you are in the area. Note: they only do cash/zelle/Apple Cash so make sure you have some on you before making a trip!

Yelp
Very overpriced for portion size (approx 8 oz) for very bland tasting custard. So many better options in the area; including the gelato place across the street. I highly recommend Jake's ice cream for better value and their mission is heart warming (they only hire people with special needs). Again, very bland tasting, no evidence of real vanilla being used, salty caramel that tastes like a cheap supermarket brand, and small portion size. But I still wouldn't go back if the portion was 3X as big. Very sketch operation too. No prices listed anywhere, no indication of sizes, cash only, and you have to knock on a curtained window to place an order. What are they hiding back there? And lastly, owner is very rude. Won't be back. Lots of better options in the area.
