Goodstone Inn and Restaurant is a 265-acre estate located in Middleburg. They have a flock of sheep, a vegetable garden that provides for their farm-to-table fare, an apiary, flower beds, an orchard, hens, goats, and even a pair of llamas!
The hubs took me here for Valentine's Day, and I was super excited as I've been wanting to check out Goodstone for a while! They had a special Valentine's Day tasting menu, in which we enjoyed: a Salade de Roquette, Fennel et Chocolat (fennel, citrus, arugula, chocolate, and balsamic; this had some sliced red onions as well; the light dressing made this a very fresh salad to start the dinner off); Soupe aux Betteraves (beets, creme fraiche, blood orange, and claytonia; served cold, this was pretty tasty; the soup was thick and creamy, and the little rinds of the blood orange gave it an interesting citrus note with texture); Hamachi et Canneberg (yellow fin tuna, cranberry, chili oil, and sorghum popcorn; while the tuna was fresh, I preferred my option more); Huitres sur la Demi-Coquille (Virginia oysters, peach shrub, and elder flower mignonette; the oysters were small, plump, and fresh, and I liked the very light and refreshing mignonette); Surf et Gazon (beef tenderloin, potato puree, black truffle, lobster, and smoked roe; the tenderloin was served as a medium rare, and it was perfectly cooked, juicy, and super flavorful! I loved the potato puree, as it was creamy and fluffy; the lobster was lightly buttered and decadent; the dish was just super delicious!); Goerge's Mill Chevre, Gooseberries, and Vincotto (little mini quail-egg-shaped balls of the goat cheese covered gooseberries, these were unique little bites that segued into the dessert round); Pavlova (with pomegranate, rosemary, and cranberry anglaise; the pavlova was just okay, but it had a pungent odor to it, and biting into it was gummy and sticky); and, the Gateau au Fromage Blanc et Mache (green tea, ricotta, pistachio, and chocolate ganache; this was like a mini green tea cheesecake with a crumbling crust; I thought it was a little bland and a bit too grainy).
The complimentary crusty bread was super delicious! Super fresh, crispy edges, and pretty dangerous, as it was hard to just stop eating them!
You had the option for sparkling, still, or tap; we had the still, in which we were served the San Benedetto artisan water. Just note, however, the tap water comes super chilled!
I also tried one of their cocktails, which was a combination of strawberries and orange; a strong drink!
I recommend in dining in their upstairs dining room, as it is quite and more intimate; there was even a pianist who played some melodic tunes throughout the evening. Most seem to covet the balcony seating, but I felt as if it was super loud with the noise carrying over from the dining patrons from the lower level; plus, the view was literally of the lower patrons eating, so it really takes away from the evening!
Service was very friendly, but it seemed as if the staff were a bit overwhelmed and short-staffed. There seemed to be constant confusion in regards to in which tables received which course, some lagging in getting some refills on drinks, and getting butter for the bread.
While waiting for our table, we sat in the main lobby area by the fireplace - the couches were super comfortable!
I even received a beautiful pink rose from the staff, and that just made the evening a bit more special!
It was a delicious evening and a great mini get-away from the city. I'd love to return to try out their lunch/brunch as well as to spend a few nights! I highly recommend in checking them out for special occasions!
