Great Places in Spokane to Eat and Drink

"Even with the growing demand for Sichuan-style Chinese, it is still in short supply in Spokane. Luckily this little South Hill hideaway has been tingling taste buds since 1997. It has a unique and diverse menu where almost every dish can be made vegetarian- or vegan-friendly. This is an absolute must for anyone craving spice but don’t be afraid to bring your mild friends or children — there is something on this menu for everyone. Whatever you do, do not miss out on the jiaozi dumplings, garlic black bean clams, or the kung pao salmon." - Kris Kilduff

Update: After the owner invited us back to give them another try, we decided to today as the reviews have turned around and been very positive. We were greeted immediately as we walked in. It was early and we were one of the few in the restaurant. We wanted to try the dumplings again but opted for different entrees. Everything we ordered was hot and had amazing flavors. Our waiter was great and just showed what we were hoping for last time. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu. 1/24 Came in for an early dinner and was immediately sat, the restaurant was pretty open. The person who greeted us asked where we preferred and we asked to be on the secondary side of the restaurant. It was much quieter there, but pretty sure we were forgotten about (or maybe just slow service?). We ordered the dumplings to start, and when they came out, they were lukewarm at best. I feel like this drew away from the actual flavor and took away from the quality of our meal. We also ordered Dan Dan noodles and hunan beef. As my 1st time eating Sichuan, I went in with an open mind and was excited to try a few dishes. The lack of service from our waitress ( only saw her a few times, and got the feeling we weren't her priority) and the food not being it's best definitely left a lot to be desired. I sadly had a thought that Panda would have been a lot cheaper and better. We also asked for a cup of soup, and not only did we never receive it, but it was on the bill. When we brought it to her attention , the was no apology or acknowledgement that it was missed. I think there is a lot of room for improvement, and would be excited to try again if some adjustments are made.

Tried this restaurant for the first time, I am very pleased with our male server; he knew his stuff on what’s on the menu, his customers service was an 10/10. The food was delicious, wait time 10-15min. As for Spice levels, they were well leveled for each dish. Will definitely come back again and try more dishes. Suggestion for the female worker at the front desk: if your going to prep food at the front counter please don’t be eating the ingredients in-front of your customers AKA: the beans).

Highly discourage going here. I have never returned food before. All dishes were returned to the kitchen although it was a beautiful presentation, the taste was way off. Not one of us was able to eat any dish, we all tried each other's dish to see if we could trade. We each took at least 3 bites of food and tried to continue but couldn't. Two of us are vegan, and our stomachs were really upset. The rice was also chewy and dry. Not kid friendly either.

Sigh. Sadly. Not what it used to be. We haven't been since like 2017/18. Back then we considered this our high-end-go-to-Chinese food place on the South Hill. We visited with friends and while it was great to see the addition of another room to comfortably seat our party of 5 the food experience wasn't that good. The food simply disappointed. It was not to our taste. The lemon chicken appears to be all dark meat. We didn't end up eating it. The fig chicken dish was swimming in sauce. Our friend ordered it and he slugged his way through it, but definitely didn't enjoy it. Our Smoked Pork Noodle was okay, but I preferred the old way of preparing the pork. This new version was too smoky. Too dry. The Prawn Cashew Dish was way too gingery. My husband loves ginger, but I do not and found it overwhelming. Ginger is not even mentioned on the menu. The sweet and sour chicken dish was okay. (Didn't take photo of it.) Sadly, just none of the dishes created the, "oh wow! I love the taste of this," experience for us. I know that tastes vary among humans, but it's pretty surprising when 5 different dishes are ordered and none were really to anyone's liking.

Great place to get your tongue numb from the Sichuan peppers. Food was pricey, but was flavorful. Portions were just right. Not too small & not too big. The dumplings were in a delicious oil with bakchoy and other veggies. A must try for appetizers. The dan dan noodles really numbed the tongue, but had a comfort taste to it. Orange chicken was crunchy & well seasoned. Waiter provided good customer service and we were checked on multiple times if we needed anything. 3 dishes & a few drinks for about $55. Overall clean place with unique art up from a featured artist. Looking forward to going back and trying more dishes. Parking is plentiful.

Google
For decades, family-run Gordy’s has served up tasty Chinese cuisine, ingredients are fresh, and flavors range from Hunan to Taiwan. Fun fact, years ago, Elon Musk’s mom (dietitian and author) Maye Musk, gave a presentation in Spokane, long story short, my wife and I took Elon’s mother to Gordy’s for an enjoyable dinner. Arrive early, or expect potential hour-long waits, or hang out in the adjoining bar room aka The Dojo. One visit is not enough for a restaurant like Gordy’s!

Google
Absolutely a hidden gem! The service was great and very attentive as we were first timers. Highly recommend the dumplings. So delicious.

Google
I heard a lot of great things about this restaurant, so I decided to give it a try….which i regretted. Coming from an Asian, the food lacks the typical Chinese flavor. No wok hei, no MSG, there is almost no aroma in the food. They didn’t properly cook the ginger and garlic to release the aroma. There is also no Asian cook working here, which might can help them improve their food…Honestly there is more flavor in Panda Express than here. However, the staff was very friendly and kind. The presentation was also A+.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Spokane. The ambiance is somewhat humble but the delicious food more than makes up for it. Been dining here for years since Gordy was still the owner. The new owners have done a fantastic job keeping the quality high.

Yelp
Gordy retired some years ago and there is a difference between my original review and now. They did open up the next door for more room which helped with the ambiance, but the food was not as good as I remember. Ordered "braised mushrooms" as a starter which was an assortment of whole and sliced mushrooms in a broth with a side bowl of rice. It was good but could have been an entree vs. a starter. As the main course, I ordered the Suan La Beef - considered as a "hot" entree - it was made up of flank steak, about six thin slices of carrot, a few bell peppers and way too much cabbage. It wasn't spicy hot at all and I was disappointed, but then I added into a bowl the mushrooms with rice to the beef, and it was much better. Service was okay -not too attentive even though I was the only customer there on a Tuesday at 6PM. There were a lot of takeout orders, however, so that might be a good sign. Not sure I'd come back though.

Yelp
This review is based off the experience we had today. This was our first time here and we heard they were looking for support so we decided to place a togo order on our way home. We picked up our Mongolian Beef order at 6pm and noticed there was just 1 box in the bag with nothing else and this cost $23? When we got home I made some rice as I thought this came with the meal as this has been our experience with every other restaurants. When I opened the box I was shocked to see it was only half full and all the vegetables were soggy. We still dished out the meal as we still wanted to try it. It was VERY smoky and there was bitter ginger flavor that permeated the dish. As we continued to eat, the bitter flavor increased so much we ended up having to dispose of the rest of the dish. This was unfortunate, but then again it was just our experience today.

Yelp
Amazing!!! I hadn't been in a while but thought takeout sounded good. I usually order Black Date Chicken - fabulous - but was craving lemon chicken. So fresh and amazing flavor. Served over fresh cabbage which added to the flavor and it is delicious with the lemon sauce over it. Nice sized portions, I had leftovers. My order was fulled to the top of the box for takeout. My husband and I are going ack to dine in as the service is amazing. Can't wait to try a another new dish!

Yelp
They were shorthanded and busy but the food was worth the wait. I have always complained about the Chinese food choices in Spokane. Somebody recommended I give this place a try. My new fave!

Yelp
Such a sad experience. Went to get nearly $100 worth of food from Gordy's on an early Friday evening late Fall 2024...Should have been forewarned when we saw painted on the front window that they were searching for a new cook...When we got home, the food was inedible due to a very ODD taste in the food...It tasted like dish soap...mostly all of it...SO DISAPPOINTED...Will just never go back again, but hope they got a new cook that well...knows what they are doing. It was much too late to head back to them to return the food...That is how bad it was....had to toss it out....

mary

Yelp
We used to love Gordy's, yet will not return. Understanding weekends can be busy, an online order was over 30 min delayed from time communicated pick up would be when placing the order. Purpose for pickup was to not tie up a table and provided a tip for pickup. When the order was ready, was told it was busy, don't believe the times given when ordering, and nothing could be done for waiting an hour and forty minutes. This came from a person who said she was an owner. Disappointing.

Yelp
We ordered takeout- chao mian, gan pung chicken, and basil eggplant seafood. The eggplant dish had over 5 different types of seafood and was delicious. My husband enjoyed the chicken entree and said it was unique. We shared the noodles and they were pretty good. We wanted the dishes to come with rice but you need to order that separately.

Andrew W.

Yelp
Unfortunately, they ran out of noodles and beef--literally the two dishes I ordered. However, they were so kind and let me pick three dishes for free. Every time I come to Gordy's, the service and food are always the best!
google avatar

Yelp
Had never been to this little gem! Sat outside on a sunny October day. Food was exceptionally delicious! We had a beef dish and SS pork. Will be back!

Yelp
Gordy's used to be our favorite Spokane secret, and now we're not even allowed to sit. We knew Gordy. W knew Gordy's wonderful wife and staff. We waited in long lines in the winter. I heard on Reddit that they're hurting for business, so we vowed to stop in. I stopped in at 6pm today 2/23/24 and the kitchen is backed up 2 hours, BUT THERE ISN'T ENOUGH BUSINESS TO HAVE WAITSTAFF??? What would Gordy do? Since no one is allowed to eat in house, it's pretty clean. LOL please let me know when you allow customers to sit in your extended dining room.
google avatar

Margo C.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious food. Many dishes can be prepared gluten free and that option is right on the menu clearly indicated--rare for Chinese food! Right now they are doing take out and delivery only. Please order from them to support them if you can.
google avatar

Gayl B.

Yelp
Great flavors in the three dishes that we tried. The chao mian and the gan pung chicken were both really very tasty!! We also had the black date chicken. I love dates and sweet potatoes, but just didn't care for the flavor of the sauce on this dish. However, it was a great leftover with some jasmine rice the next day. There's a small area for outdoor dining, which wasn't very appealing. We had ordered to go based on the small size of their interior and the photos of outside. Spokane weather is conducive of beautiful summer patio dining, but just not here. I'll definitely be back and am hoping to dine inside next time!

Yelp
This is a review for a takeout order. It is a smart move to order ahead as they do get busy and the kitchen is small. We ordered on Friday afternoon for a Friday evening pickup. We had to settle for a 4:30 pm pickup as other times were already taken. If you really have a specific time in mind for the dinner hour, especially on Friday or Saturday, I recommend calling the day before. So, you get Gordy's for the food because each dish packs a flavor punch that will not disappoint you. We ordered the chao mian which was delightful, the gan pung chicken, which will knock your socks off, especially if you are a fan of salt and vinegar potato chips, and the black date chicken which also had great flavor, just not my favorite. Parking is easy in their small parking lot. Definitely the best Chinese food I have eaten recently. Try this place out for a flavor treat.

Erica S.

Yelp
Fantastic dishes and service. Everything on the menu is delicious and fresh. Cute little spot highlighting local art. One of Spokane's best restaurants.

Ari H.

Yelp
don't forget to add the rice! The food is really good here, but if you order it online, it does not come with rice. Quite a shock!! We assumed that every entrée would come with rice like it does at every other Sichuan restaurant we've been to in our entire lives. But just so you know, you do not get rice with your entrée and you need to add another dollar to get rice with every entrée! What the heck!

Hamilton T.

Yelp
Really know something from Panda's hometown ! Must eat when I visit Spokane Nice food!
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
This is my second visit and only because I live outta state and due to covid hours have been flexing ( not in my favor) or else I would be here every trip I make to Spokane. I had the sesame prawns Both times and the crispy crust w/ chili sauce (which I would drink with all meals ) . Then I had the black pepper chicken also each visit , but today I had the ants climbing trees , which the super duper server said it's an adventurous dish. Oh my word , not sure of the reaction but I couldn't stop eating(MUST TRY). If in town or neighborhood or state this place should be a go to for family , dating and just a nice lunch place to go .

Yelp
Always great food. Never disappointed great service. We have been numerous times over the years.

Yelp
This is a great Chinese restaurant by any standards and although it is own by 3 super talented Caucasian owners it sings authenticity in every way possible and exceeds all expectations and standards The restaurant is clean and smells great when we walked in The server is an owner and is super helpful upbeat cheerful The food has wok fried taste without the grease You can substitute anything and the chef will prepare it for you since everything is cooked fresh There wasn't a condiment tray at the table and I understand why after I asked for white pepper Everything was perfectly seasoned!! My husband said the wine list was extensive We ordered a lot of food and when the owner packed the leftovers for us she gave us a whole pack of rice It's one of these special touches that makes the restaurant and we are grateful it's close by Will definitely be back
google avatar

Kathy D.

Yelp
We just had lunch here and boy, what tasty food! We had the Garlic black bean beef, hunan beef, veggie fried rice and Dan Dan noodles. The last dish I didn't care for. Don't be afraid to order a spicy dish. The hunan beef was just right. I get heartburn and this dish didn't bother me a bit. It was delicious along with the garlic beef. Some of the best Chinese food I have had in Washington. Usually it is too sweet. But here, it was very savory. We live two hours away but thinking of reasons to come up here just to have lunch!
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
You're going to ask yourself if you really need to order the green beans, and the answer is yes. Do you really need a whole side of a vegetable you only sort of like? Yes, you do. The answer is yes, order the green beans. We lived near Spokane for a year 13 years ago & regularly still talk about the green beans. We have discussed taking a trip to Spokane and heading straight to Gordy's for green beans. This is a 5/5 choice every single time.

Tammy R.

Yelp
Love the menu, and the service is great! I can't believe that our own neighborhood restaurant is so good--we'd drive cross town for dinner here if we had to!
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
The Tofu salad was amazing. Great service. The dishes we ordered were loved by all. We went back next day just have the tofu salad again
google avatar

Keo N.

Yelp
For a provincial city, the taste was authentic Chinese but hardly any Sichuan dishes. The Dan Dan Mian was good but I have never seen so much shredded carrots on it. Both the clams and calamari was on point. I don't think this restaurant is Sichuanese, more of your local "Bamboo Garden." I have trekked all over the Western US, visiting purportedly Sichuanese restaurants. Salt Lake, Moab, and Denver have fairly decent Sichuanese food.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Went to dinner w fam last night , they will not seat you until your whole party has arrived which kind of irked me a little and at 515 the place was empty , but .... The gal was nice enough to offer us seating in they're seating area in the restaurant , the other piece of the irked me puzzle is they charge 4 % on credit card charges ..... that being said the food was excellent service was excellent as well , so I guess I have to suck it up with the two things that irked me because the food and service makes up for it ....

F G.

Yelp
We ordered five different items. All were extremely disappointing. They did not have the dynamic and wow flavors of the historic Gordy's. Must be new staff in the kitchen. I hope improvements are made.

Chris N.

Yelp
Favorite spot on south hill Spokane. Highly recommend the location for delicious unique Chinese food, eclectic kind staff, and changing local art inside. Support the local joint!

Agnes S.

Yelp
Excellent food, great price. It's Takeout only these days but definitely worth it to pick up.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
Very unique foods! Great flavors, when they say smoked orange peel you can actually taste it! Far cry from what you normally get. I am unfortunately never craving this, and I of all of their dishes I've have yet to say "oh man" from the flavors. I get that numbing effect from the szechuan peppers, which is fun. Fantastic service! Maybe this is your niche, check it out!

Barbara B.

Yelp
Fresh ingredients. Delicious flavors. Best hot and sour soup I've in years. We ate take out but found the staff very kind and attentive. They have a very casual dining atmosphere.
google avatar

Pam H.

Yelp
Ohhh dang it was all so scrumptious! We had 4 dishes and each one had its own unique flavor. The restaurant is so clean and fresh. The food is worth the wait. Do not be afraid of a line the service is wonderfully quick!
google avatar

Shayna S.

Yelp
My family is very hype about Gordy's so I finally tried the top dishes they recommend. We dined in and service was friendly, fast, and helpful! -Dumplings 5/5 love the tangy sauce and veggies -Dan Dan noodles 2/5 for me but husband and my brother rave, kind of peanut ish sauce -Black date chicken 4/5 rich sweet salty sauce, good with rice -sweet and sour pork 4/5 extra sweet but love the sour, it's crispy and flavorful
google avatar

Devin H.

Yelp
Tried long ago, and was thoroughly disappointed. Their food was unappetizing, dumplings were cold in the middle, and I even told the waitress how displeased I was before we left. They did comp a couple of the things we ordered to soften the blow. Ever since I've thought about this place, wanting to try it again. I knew it was highly acclaimed, and even had it personally recommended to me my a family member, so I wanted to give it a shot. I'm very glad I did. Went in on a Thursday night a few weeks ago and was very impressed. The business was booming, the food was amazing (and quite authentic) and now think of Gordy's as being the best Chinese restaurant in the city. The wait is a bit much some times, and some staff are nicer (or more presentable) than others, but the overall experience makes Gordy's a hidden gem of sorts. The first time must have been a fluke, because this is the greatest comeback I've ever experienced in a restaurant. Only took them 2 years to blow my mind since the first encounter.

Gary B.

Yelp
One of the only true Sichuan restaurants in Spokane. It is a great spot for cold weather dining. We like many things on the menu. Love the Hot and Sour Soup, Sesame Prawns, dumplings, and lemon chicken. Different levels of spiciness so you can choose.

Jt S.

Yelp
Food: 3 Price: -4 Overall: -1 First time trying this place out and the sticker shock is real! The picture of the menu posted on here a couple years ago is already wildly outdated (I have added pictures of the current menu at the time of this posting). All restaurant prices went up about 20% 3 or 4 years ago, but most haven't risen too much since. This restaurant decided to buck that trend and raised most of their prices 50% just in the last two years. We ordered two of the "cheaper" entrees and two (essentially) sides for dinner takeout. I showed up expecting my total to be less than $50 (the gal didn't tell me my total when I ordered), only to hear that it was over $80! By the time I put a tip on there it was north of $90...for dinner for two with some leftovers. They also scam you on the rice...it's not included with any entree, so you have to pay extra for that as well. The food was ok. Most of it was pretty bland, but seemed to be decent quality. Nothing was great, but nothing was terrible. Even if everything was half-price, I still probably wouldn't return. None of the food was memorable, yet they feel it's worth the same amount as filet mignon at a fine dining establishment. If you're craving Asian food, do your taste buds and your wallet a favor and go to Izumi. Their food is SO flavorful! If you just want good food near Gordy's, go to the next parking lot and get Slick Rock Burrito. They have delicious food at a great price.

Yelp
Loved the food big variety and cooked to order. Great service will be back soon excellent!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
So okay... we're going to be short and sweet with this review. We shared the SHA CHA 'SAN XIAN' NOODLE with Sha Cha Green Bean appetizer (jasmine rice). It doesn't get any better. It doesn't get any better. Nice and spicy but not hot.
google avatar

Kaye S.

Yelp
Always great service and food. They won't seat til you whole party is present because they are small and need to keep things moving. Accept it or head to Panda Express.....they always have empty seats!

Cyrille H.

Yelp
Food presentation was good. But the taste was subpar. The flavors were everywhere. It was hard to tell what the food was supposed to taste like. Perhaps for the area, it was good. But we've traveled across the country and eaten at so many different restaurants of just about every ethnicity, and this was not on the top of our list. It was worth a try, at least once.
google avatar

Darik N.

Yelp
I'm at at total loss of words. Literally there is no way to describe how great the food is at Gordy's. This is my new favorite place to eat!

amy l.

Yelp
My favorite takeout in Spokane. I've never eaten in the restaurant. Employees are friendly, only complaint would be that it's often a long wait to get my order. However, it's always worth it!

I E.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant just a few miles from Downtown Spokane. Amazing service and the Mapo Tofu was so good. The dish was bursting with flavor of Sichuan peppers. Their entrees are broken up by heat levels and this was under the hot section. I would definitely recommend.

Tara O.

Yelp
Always a good experience! Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed. Great food, quaint atmosphere.
google avatar

Cheryl Renee L.

Yelp
What a surprise, a fabulous Chinese food restaurant in Spokane, Washington. Unique and interesting Sichuan dishes. Everything very fresh and meticulously prepared. Extensive wine and beer list. Very friendly wait staff. Our waitress was one of the owners and she took the time to talk us through the restaurant menu because we were new customers. The food is top notch. People that work that hard to create something special really deserve to be rewarded. We will be back and I hope my review encourages people to give them a try.
google avatar

Walter P.

Yelp
Good as it gets. SF Chinatown good. Small place, and food is always better at a table than taken home so it's worth the wait if they're busy. Oh, the dumplings.
google avatar

Penny V.

Yelp
You will NOT be seated until your entire party arrives. Too bad, we probably would have had a glass of wine and some appetizers while we waited if we had been seated, and there were plenty of tables open. The food was very good. Lemon chicken was excellent, as was the sweet and sour pork. Also, charging $1 each for rice? Ridiculous.
google avatar

Travis W.

Yelp
Good authentic food. I had the garlic black bean beef and it was very good, well seasoned, and I was able to add more spice to it. 9/10 recommend this place!

Tom Z.

Yelp
Went with 4 friends. The others gave a Good rating for the taste of the food. For me it was just OK. What threw all of us off is the waiter saying he couldn't do individual bills. We asked why not. I don't remember the odd answer he came up with. He said he would total up the bill and divide it by five! As for ambiance I would say it was good. Clean, comfortable. On our particular visit, and this is not Gordy's fault, there were 8 middle aged ladies in the waiting area about 5 feet from our table who were really loud making it very difficult for us to converse.
