Gotham Bagels Review - South Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"On paper, Gotham might not seem like a likely candidate for having some of the city’s best bagels. It’s originally from Madison, Wisconsin (not exactly known for its bagel prowess), and runs its carryout operation from a nondescript window behind the Gino’s East in the South Loop.  But the bagels here are surprisingly good: they’re big, bready with a lot of chew, and come in 12 different flavors. Plus there’s a variety of bagel sandwiches like the perfectly proportioned BEC. Order online and be prepared to get your bagel fix early since they close around noon." - Veda Kilaru

The Best Chicago Pop-Ups And New Takeout Restaurants

"Gotham Bagels is a to-go bagel shop that’s operating out of an Italian restaurant in Old Town. But don’t let the Inception-style restaurant within a restaurant plot confuse you, this place has excellent bagels. They’re big, soft, slightly chewy, and will shut up any East Coaster who complains about Chicago’s bagel scene. From a perfect BEC sandwich to the lox with cream cheese, everything here is fantastic." - adrian kane

Tandoori Fried Chicken & 3 More Things To Order This Week

"Gotham Bagels is a takeout-only spot that’s operating out of an Italian restaurant in Old Town. But don’t let all the Chianti bottles and the big wooden bar fool you, this place has excellent bagels. They’re big, soft, slightly chewy, and will shut up any East coaster who complains about Chicago’s bagel scene. From a perfect BEC sandwich to the lox with cream cheese, everything here is fantastic. Even the pickles." - adrian kane

Gotham Bagels - Review - Old Town - Chicago - The Infatuation

"On paper, Gotham might not seem like a likely candidate for having some of the city’s best bagels. It’s originally from Madison, Wisconsin (not exactly known for its bagel prowess), and runs its carryout operation out of an Italian restaurant in Old Town. But the bagels here are excellent and will shut up any complaints about Chicago’s bagel scene. In fact, this place is our new go-to spot and will probably be yours, too. What’s so great about the bagels themselves?? They’re big, soft, slightly chewy, and delicious. The menu has eight kinds (including an egg-everything that’s soulmates with the scallion cream cheese), sandwiches like the perfectly-proportioned BEC, and a variety of spreads. And for anyone searching for a simple-yet-fantastic lox and cream cheese, this is where you’ll find it. In fact, after ordering from here, all your bagel searching will be over. Food Rundown Bacon Egg & Cheese Sandwich There are a few sandwiches on Gotham’s menu, but you can’t ignore the perfection of a well-executed BEC like the one here. It has a fried egg, thick-cut bacon, sharp cheddar, and your choice of bagel. Bagel With Lox & Cream Cheese The lox is smoky and tender, and Gotham’s puts it between two layers of cream cheese. Which, according to our East Coast colleagues, is the correct way to do it. Super Egg Everything With Scallion Cream Cheese One bite of Gotham’s egg-everything bagel paired with the scallion cream cheese and it’s obvious these two were destined to be together. Another perfect bagel/cream cheese pairing? The sesame with honey tart cherry." - Adrian Kane

Google
Gotham Bagels is hands down the best bagel spot I’ve ever tried. It was so good we ended up ordering three mornings in a row during our trip to Chicago. We went both sweet and savory—cinnamon sugar with maple cream cheese, and a bacon, egg & cheese on an onion bagel—and every bite was incredible. Truly 12/10! Online ordering was quick and easy, and I’ll absolutely be back on my next visit.

Alex

Google
Excellent bagel, got the Brighton Beach, Premium Atlantic cold-smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, red onion, arugula, & capers. Was well worth the walk from the hotel while visiting Chicago

Tyler M.

Google
I really wanted to like this place. But, the bagel was doughy and chewy. Way too expensive, for $15 I’d hope for more bacon. Restaurant is dark loud and confusing (not a great breakfast vibe). Staff isn’t very nice. Do not understand the hype. Go anywhere else. Lowest score on Beli for me :/

Winter R.

Google
Very hard to hear staff over the music, but they were helpful and got us everything we needed. Coffee was burnt. Bagels were extremely good, we had honey whole wheat and egg. Place is definitely a favorite for a lot of people as we saw many going in and out throughout our breakfast.

Google
I was super excited to come and try the bagel here but was disappointed. Bagel was very dry. I got the spicy sausage bagel. No kick to it. Very bland🥲 not worth $16

Google
Decided to “work from home” at Gotham while I waited for my car to be serviced down the street. I ordered breakfast and lunch while working. The atmosphere was beautiful and perfect for working. Service was also amazing. I ordered in person and sat inside. I ordered the OMFG and a bagel with cream cheese. The sandwich had more fried than chicken, but wasn’t bad. I wouldn’t order it again. The cream cheese also left something to be desired. The bagels…chefs kiss! If I didn’t have to walk to pick up my car, I’d have left with a dozen! The bagels alone are worth coming back over and over again. Gotham is pricey, but I think that’s to be expected in the area.

Jennifer M.

Google
The bagels are amazing. You can definitely tell that they are handcrafted. I had the multigrain bagel, bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich and a peach coffee. That was great. What a great summer flavor. The staff here is excellent. It’s an easy location right across from the northwestern parking garage the only issue is there’s not a lot of seating on the inside so make sure you try to get there early so you can catch a seat

Sarah K.

Google
Really cool bagel spot, more dark Asthetic unlike the usual bagel shop! It was kind of expensive however and the bagel was okay but the toppings were all on one side. I got a “Brighton Beach sandwich” on a salt bagel with scallion cream cheese. It was about $20 with. Good amount of toppings.

Yelp
I Wouldn't have even known it was there, but the nearby place we were headed for was closed, and the cold weather drove us to the first available spot. Fine bagels and proficient service. Lox: tasty and fresh! People have been talking up Gotham Bagels to me for a while. Are they good? Absolutely. Are they the best? Only perhaps if you've never been to New York Bagel and Bialy up on Touhy. This is a nice, but tiny location, and it was very cozy on a weekday morning. A good place for coffee, bagels, and catching up with a friend. Not too busy. Quiet enough to do some work too.

Yelp
[Gotham Bagels] Many locations, this one was the Gold Coast location. The biggest bagel sandwiches I've ever had. I could not even finish mine. The only downside is the price point. Overall, nothing else to say since it was just an order and take out type of deal. The taste was good. I ordered a salmon lox bagel and the other one was a vegetarian avocado bagel https://www.gothambagels.com 1212 N Dearborn St Chicago, IL 60601

Yelp
Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Eh. We got a OMFG bagel on egg and it was good, but not enough sauce and the chicken was huge. Like too big for the bagel we got which is saying something because these bagels are huge. A little confusing to find with the banner that is posted on Dearborn but it is directly next to the USA Vein Clinic on S Plymouth court and Ida B Wells drive. Walk in or order online, cannot eat inside as it's a walk up only window.
google avatar

Mahathi T.

Yelp
Bagels are very doughy BUT if you can get past the texture being off, the fillings are delish. Would recommend if you're needing a bagel fix!

Yelp
The omfg bagel got me omfg-ing. Once you walk in, you'd probably think you are in the wrong spot. Looks like a bar but just walking down, and you will see the order counter. It's very dimly lit but I found out that this place turns into a bar at night. So cool. Staff were great and super friendly. My order came out less than 10 minutes. I ordered the OMFG bagel on an everything bagel with extra scallion spread. It was loaded and definitely messy to eat. The fried egg exploded on me so be careful. The bagel was perfectly toasted; soft yet crispy texture. I enjoyed my bagel so much! I ate half of it there and saved the other half for the airport. They have a nice spacious outdoor seating in front. The OMFG bagel was the popular item and I can see why. It had fried chicken, cheese, fried egg, bacon bagel with sriracha aioli. I added the scallion cream cheese and it was a game changer!! It was totally worth it. IMO I think it's better than some bagel places here in San Jose, CA. I highly recommend!

Yelp
I attempted to get a bagel here this morning. Walked the mile which was a nice walk to get there. You order while outside at a window. I asked the lady if this is where you order and she directed me to their online menu and informed me to order there and pick up at window. I went online and even though the board outside says they have cinnamon and raisin online it was not available. Ok got a sesame but could not for the life of me find how to add cream cheese. I went on to order coffee and they did not have half and half only oat milk. At this point I had enough gave up and went elsewhere. It should not be that hard to order a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Best bagel I've ever had. Perfect texture, rich taste, and just delicious! Had the cinnamon raisin with plain cream cheese. So so good
google avatar

Constance M.

Yelp
Back again today for some delicious bagels! Both my daughters got the plain bagel toasted with cream cheese and I had an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. We enjoyed them outside and they were delicious!
google avatar

Munsanje M.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place and it didn't disappoint! I ordered ahead on the app and waited on their little patio which was cute! Perfect day out to sit and enjoy this. The spicy ketchup and potato later really took this to another level. The pick-up spot is inside another restaurant to the back but you won't miss it with the outdoor patio. Will definitely be trying this again!
google avatar

Nate H.

Yelp
The bagels were excellent, and the servings were large. Space was small but good enough for. Friday morning. Service was good, took a little while but the bagels were worth it.
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
We stayed at the hotel down the block, so one morning, I ordered online and picked it up to take back to the hotel. The ordering process, including notification texts, was easy. They prepared them super quick. We got the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel, the OMFC (Nashville fried chicken, egg, bacon and cheddar, side of spicy aioli and pickle). We also ordered an everything bage with scallion cream cheese. Both breakfast sandwiches were really good. There was so much cream cheese on the bagel, they didn't skimp. The coffee was great, too.
google avatar

Kyle B.

Yelp
My beautiful and genius fiancé found this bagel place while in town. On a Friday morning we journeyed the streets and into Gotham Bagels. It was a great move. The bagels are extremely chewy. The hospital staff nearby knows what's up. There was a line but the sandwiches didn't take that long. I enjoyed mine immensely. Would eat again. The shop is small.
google avatar

Mai S.

Yelp
Super delicious bagels. We had a honey oat bagel with strawberry cream cheese and a brighten beach sandwich. Don't get me wrong the sweet bagel was great but the brighten beach bagel was to die for! Order online and then pick it up at a little window inside another restaurant. It was a very fast turn around time and delicious. I highly recommend it. There is a little area outside you can sit at too that's cute

Yelp
Stop searching. It's here. Since the close of H and H in NYC some years ago, Gotham now wears the crown. Such good bagels. I'm currently in the Chicago downtown Dearborn location, feasting on a fine sesame bagel with whitefish salad. Did I toast the bagel? No. It was already perfect. Now, spoiler, I haven't tried all the whitefish salads. I've only had a lot of them. But to save time, I'm also going to say my search for the most excellent whitefish salad also ended this morning. This is it. Truly fine, fishy fare. I could (and may) eat this for every meal today. Don't waste another second. Get here. Get fed. Eat the things.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
If you like a steamed, thick, NY-style bagel, Gotham has your back. The bagels are fresh and fillings applied generously. Service is pretty fast and online ordering reliable. I wish there were more options for cream cheese and sweet bagel flavors, but the ones they offer are delicious. Stop by if you're in the area!
google avatar

Lynn K.

Yelp
Great service and very good bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwiches. They have REALLY good hot sauce that they serve with the sandwiches that is made in house. Very friendly and helpful staff. There is limited indoor seating and a large sitting area outside.
google avatar

Lily F.

Yelp
Wow! Delicious! A hidden gem in the Gold Coast area! Served nice and warm with a pickle in the side. Was not as messy to eat as I thought it would be. Food delivery was quick! A little pricey in my opinion being $12 but, one of the best bagel sandwiches I've had.

Julia P.

Yelp
For a $20 egg bagel sandwich, it's definitely violently mid. I got a fried chicken, egg, and cheddar sandwich with arugula. The chicken was stale and chewy, and the bagel was very tough. The arugula was fresh but my egg was overcooked. It's not a bad sandwich, but not something i would seek out again for the price. Fantastic pickle though.
google avatar

Gabrielle M.

Yelp
First impression when walking in Gotham Bagels was "warm and cozy, but small." We ordered ours to-go since it was a ten minute walk from our hotel. I ordered the "V" a vegan bagel that is filled with Vegan scallion cream cheese, poblano salad, tomato, arugula, & avocado. The vegan scallion cream cheese was delicious but the bagel was over filled and sloppy. Really messy to eat. My husband had the pastrami and egg and said it was amazing! One of the best breakfast bagel sandwiches he ever had! Next time we go to Chicago I will try that one to see if the pastrami and egg is worth 5 stars on its own!
google avatar

Marieta W.

Yelp
Cashier was very nice and helpful with suggestions. Coffee was great. Just wish they had heavy cream to add to my cortado but I was still very satisfied with my drink and service. Had the lox bagel and it was phenomenal but if I were to make one critique it would be for the bagel itself to be a bit softer and not so hard. The sesame bagel I had was one of the hardest that I have ever had. Over all, it was a great place. I would recommend!

Julia K.

Yelp
So good. Group of 6 all got different bagels and all of us ate everything. From the classic bagel with cream cheese to the yellow cab sandwich was 10/10. They also have coffee, dr. Browns soda, and other typical Jewish deli thinks (latkes, lox, matzo balls). Service was fast and nice! Great spot. (Locals placed online orders and there was a constant stream of people).
google avatar

Moose M.

Yelp
Great bagels, great bagel sandwiches, really good coffee, potato latkes yummmm. Employees really friendly, very good service. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Excellent bagels! Great lox. Fast and friendly service. A hefty bag with just two bagels meant a good base to start the day. Thanks!
google avatar

Allyssa G.

Yelp
Tried these bagels last April and haven't stopped thinking about them since! The ultimate breakfast sandwich to cure any type of hangover. The OMFG was incredible and literally had us going OMFG. We so wish there was one closer to home.
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
Amazing bagels! Highly recommend trying this place out! I ordered a sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese and the bagel itself did not disappoint. However, I did not enjoy my chai latte. I was also confused by the pickup process as I received a pickup time and arrived a few minutes after that, but I still had to wait 10 more minutes to get my bagel and latte. It took about 35 minutes from the time I ordered, which seemed excessive. However I did appreciate having a place to eat inside and I did think the bagel was fabulous, so I will be back! Just make sure to order early.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Great bagels . Great service. The location is pickup. Situated downtown yet the street isn't too busy. May be a bit tough to locate if not familiar with the area. A map app helps. For a birthday reward bagel, it was great.

Ben B.

Yelp
We waited a good 30 minutes for an order of a PLAIN bagel because they were out apparently. there were only 3 types of bagels on the menu though and other orders After ours were finished like every 2 minutes. I did feel bad for the two girls working because one guy took a long ass break in the middle of lunch rush, so he should be fired. If you are a BAGEL shop you should probably have bagels ready at 1130am on Sunday. Plain bagels especially. I feel like the customers also have to do 99% of the work and the workers don't even alert you when ur order is ready. We were late to a Bears game cuz of them, but they're playing the packers so idk if I should even be mad. Still am though.
google avatar

Laurita M.

Yelp
This was definitely the best bagel sandwich I've had in Chicago! Super fresh and delicious. You can order online and pick up there. Indoor and outside seating. 10/10!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
I believe this place doesn't have the best wrap. Is it expensive? Yes (The recent raise in prices made me want to cry). Is it an "authentic" New York bagel? No clue, I have never had one. The only thing I can compare it to are the bagels at Einsteins and Noah's I ate while growing up (which I am quite fond of!!) that the ride-or-die New York bagel lover would scorn. Honestly, though? I like this place. Yeah, the online ordering can be inconvenient if you don't know about it (make note of this if you go on the weekend!!! It could take more than an hour). Yeah, the bagels are probably not the most authentic to New York or whatever. But overall, it is what it is. My favorite is the OMFG (minus the bacon, I am a hater) (I should also note that I don't have a photo of it to share). And it has never lead me astray. Sometimes it tastes better than other days. Sometimes there's a tendon in my chicken. But whatever. It's tasty.
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
Good luck finding this place for your first time Eduardo! This place seems like they do not want business. Their signage is not clearly displayed, inaccurate, and will have you doing a triple head turn IF you are looking for this place. I hate giving a single star rating for places... I always aim for a five. However.... If the place goes by a completly different name than on Yelp, or other names from other known sources, AND close at 2pm... then a place like this gets a single star. That is actually what this place does! # 1 - They do not go by Gotham Bagel... entirely anyways. See their confusing signage in the pictures. They appear to go by Eduardo's... I ain't looking for Eduardo's when I am searching for a Gotham Bagel. Perhaps it is just this location with the confusing signage. They gotta fix that somehow. # 2 - They close at 2pm... What kind of hours are those??? Lame! Most or all of these Gotham Bagels places here Chicago close at this time. Single star for this location. I wasted my time looking for this place... AND when I finally found them, they closed.
google avatar

Janel S.

Yelp
Bagel sandwiches are top notch here! I walked in here after grocery shopping and forgot to complete my order online. When I arrived they figured it out quickly and placed my order right away. The staff here is always very helpful and friendly. It came out quick and was still hot when I got home. I usually order the Rocky's Deli. It's a good portion size and I usually eat half for breakfast and half for lunch.
google avatar

Esther S.

Yelp
Moving to Chicago from NYC, it's been tough finding good bagels, but Gotham has become a regular spot for us. The bread is so chewy and flavorful and the scallion cream cheese is a must, a little goes a long way too, which is different from the gobs used in NYC bagels, but just as good in my opinion. We always order a dozen for brunch parties a day ahead and pick up the morning of. ALSO I'm not sure why there are so many low reviews talking about how they didn't toast their bagels right bc fresh bagels should not be toasted! They are perfect on their own! :)
google avatar

J G.

Yelp
The bagel here is on point! Not a whole lot else to say, not quite ess-a-bagel from NY, but better than than the normal go tos.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
This place has the best bagels I've had in a long time! They are hand rolled and very generous with the cream cheese. Coffee is great and service was quick. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Alexandra W.

Yelp
Honestly one of the best bagels I've had! So good!!! I wish I hadn't asked for better because they put wayyy too much but it's ok! The people were very nice! The inside was very cool as well.

Andres B.

Yelp
Just moved into the neighborhood and this bagel place is beyond perfect. It's hidden and the location right next to the train is perfect. The ambiance also elevates the whole experience along with excellent staff. I'm so happy to know I have a staple like this place within walking distance.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
We LOVE Gotham bagels!!! We're regulars that live a block away and always come here when we want to have an epic start to our day! We typically order 2 freshly brewed coffees and spicy sausage with a fried egg on everything bagels. The quality and service is what you pay for, and quite honestly, you can't put a price on that when they consistently execute. We had a gift card and ripped a little extra for the sweet service they provided. Thank you! We will be back. We were order #55
google avatar

Aditi S.

Yelp
This place is pricey. But if you can get past that, it's very tasty! We split the 'V' bagel sandwich and had a reg and chai latte. The bagel sandwich was stuffed and so incredibly filling! The flavors all worked really well together and I had no idea it was vegan until I saw the cream cheese used was actually vegan scallion tofu spread. Gotta say I was very impressed and would consider coming again as a treat. Check it out

Michael M.

Yelp
Such a rip off, $18.00 for a turkey sandwich. Bag of chips for $3.00. The $21.00 meal too much. I almost puked when they asked for a tip,
google avatar

Phaithe N.

Yelp
A petite bagel shop. Perfect for takeout. There's a patio in the summer. The homemade bagels are huge, and they pack on the spreads!
google avatar

Stacy S.

Yelp
This is my second review for Gotham. Apparently I was given wrong information when I went the first time, and they were still open. Not sure who was right, so double check their hours if you go. We both got the lox and cream cheese sandwich on the everything bagel. I thought mine was delicious with plenty of lox, cream cheese, capers and red onion. He thought there was way too much cream cheese and scraped about half of it off. Beverage options are limited. Love the simple, compostable packaging for the bagels... if only that municipality had composting services.
google avatar

Aleksey M.

Yelp
Great food and service. Mocha late was great and the bagel was best i had in some time. Texture and bake on it was perfect and great lox spread. Definitely a great place.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
It was a little hard to find at first but boy am I happy we did. Such a good, soft bagel with generous amounts of toppings. These bagels could be eaten for 2 meals they are so packed. I think about this spot all the time and can't wait to go back when we are in Chicago. Order ahead on their website/app
google avatar

Jon S.

Yelp
Just got home with my order and again missing a bagel. I love the bagels, but too frustrating to keep going. i'm not going to call over a $3 bagel. I'm just done

Reese C.

Yelp
Probably my second favorite bagel shop I've been to! The interior is a bit small but there is plenty of outdoor seating. The house made hot sauce was a nice touch to the bagel!
google avatar

Arielle M.

Yelp
The best way to cure a hangover is by eating a sesame bagel from Gotham bagels. As someone who grew up on the east coast eating Jersey shore bagels every weekend during the summer and living in New York I have to say this is the best bagel in Chicago. I also love their scallion scream cheese and enjoyed their bacon egg and cheese (the bacon is thick cut) and they have a great hot sauce they give you as a side. Knocked off one star because I do find it to be expensive.
google avatar

Nastaran S.

Yelp
Pretty good food , awesome bagels.fast service and noce people. Maybe pver priced but totally worth it
google avatar

Linda A.

Yelp
Located in the heart of the city is a phenomenal bagel shop with an amazing variety of bagels and sandwiches! Judging by the fun and friendly service, you can tell that the staff are well trained and work as a team! The shop is small in size however there is plenty of open seating. I ordered two bagel sandwiches: the Long Island and Brighton Beach on salted bagels. Both tasted great! I highly recommend Gotham Bagels for brunch and catering parties!
google avatar

Amulya Y.

Yelp
I love these bagels! I am originally from the NJ/NY area and there aren't many great bagel places in Chicago. The key to a great bagel is that it should taste great without needing to be toasted. These bagels are perfectly springy and tasty and they put a TON of cream cheese. My personal favorite is the veggie cream cheese topped with pickled fresno chilies. The veggie cream cheese has some chopped fresh veggies and the chilies add a vinegary peppery kick. Breakfast sandwiches are also good though pricey. I have also tried their mocha and if you have a sweet tooth like me, you will love this. So chocolatey! Can't wait to try more of the beverages. Try to order online as they have a large volume of orders on the weekends. I love to eat at the cute outdoor seating in the summers and watch the cute dogs walking by!
