This market is wonderful, not only because of it's fantastic vendors and selection, but also because of its mission. This part of York Road is actually in a 'food desert', meaning that it is hard for the people who live in the area to have access to fresh produce and other healthy options. The Govanstowne Market manages to shrink that desert each Wednesday June-September with a range of fresh produce, meats, baked goods, desserts as well as craft and educational vendors. The market accepts cash or credit as well as payments such as EBT, WIC, SNAP, SFMNP, etc.
In my Junior and Senior year summers at Loyola (the market is in a parking lot on Loyola's campus) I would frequent the market to get my fresh produce, try out other goodies and relax with members of the community. Even now, though it is difficult for me to get there on time as I no longer live in the city, I still try to go back a few times per year to support it.
What's better than a local non-profit which helps local people support their local farms & small businesses???
