The 13 Best Barbecue Spots In Atlanta

"When you walk into this unfussy East Atlanta spot, you’re immediately greeted with a yellow menu plastered on the wall. The roster is large both in square footage and options. Your eyes will float between the rib-n-chicken dinner and rib tips, beef sausage sandwich, and turkey burger combo. You won’t go wrong with any protein pick. But if we had a slotted spatula to our heads and had to single out one item, it would have to be the smoked wings. The meat almost drops off the bone before it gets to your mouth, which isn’t a bad thing since an assortment of sauces (the mustard-based Pure Gold is dope) will be around to catch any loose ends." - demarco williams, jacinta howard

Let me start by saying, I have one word and that is SUPERB!!!!!! After a day of errands, Shauni and I were ready to eat. After executing a search on Yelp, I came across GQ BBQ and we decided to pull up. Y’all know I love me some BBQ. Upon arrival, the location was super to find as it sits on the main road. When pulling into the parking lot there is parking on both sides as well as parking in the back. The outside was clean and vibrant. We knew we were in for a treat as we were able to smell the bbq before even getting to the restaurant. Yes, the power of a good aroma to captivate the sense of smell. 😜 Heading inside, the location kept with the vibrant color on the walls as to draw your eyes to the menu. There are ample seating options as well so if you desire to eat in as we did, there is indoor and outdoor seating. Taking some time to review the menu, I decided on the Rib Dinner with Baked Beans, Collards, and I ordered two orders of cornbread as well and decided to not get the white bread that comes with the meal. To note, the cornbread is an extra charge. Once our order was placed, we took a seat and enjoyed the games that were playing on the televisions. As we were engrossed in conversation, before we knew it, our food was ready. I retrieved my plate and headed to my seat. The moment I opened that plate, my entire life smiled. After being enticed by the aromas, I was now overtaken by the visual presentation of this meal. As I opted for the sauce on the side, I was able to see the ribs in their naked state and capture the full fragrance of seasoned pork without the coverings of sauce. Babeeeeeeeeeee, GQ BBQ showed off with this meal. Let’s talk the food: Ribs: well seasoned, tender, meaty, minimal gristle, the right amount of fat for a nice chew, great portion size as the dish comes with ribs and rib tips. The sauce was an added layer of joy. I opted to mix their Gresham blend with the Sweet and my mouth had a full mouthgasm of robust flavors, joy, and excitement. These ribs were the absolute bomb with or without the sauce. Baked Beans: perfectly cooked, well seasoned, fresh. Collards: well doctored, tender, perfect pairing for the ribs. Cornbread: absolute gold status, perfectly sweet, cakey with a light crumble, buttery, golden baked, worth the extra cost. The cornbread is slightly small, so I would suggest getting three. LoL. Overall, GQ BBQ was an amazing experience. The ribs dominate the meal as they should, however, the sides compliment the ribs very well. The entire meal is a 10/10 and I will be back very soon for another order. Though I live nowhere near GQ BBQ, I will make sure to make my am way back a few times a year to have my soul fed and taste buds tantalized.

I intended to order Anne's special that comes with 1/2 chic and ribs with 2 sides, but when the nice young lady took my order, I said Anne's special lunch chicken... or something to that nature. Anyway, I ended up with a 3/4 of chicken with two sides. My mistake. I chose greens and Mac n Cheese for my sides and the GQ special blend sauce on the meat. I ate on the patio. The skin was delicious, and the chicken was tender but sadly still cold. I didn't bring this to their attention since I'm not a fan of sending food back to the kitchen. But they likely would've heated it for me. All the staff were friendly. I also asked for a side of BBQ sauce that had a little more spicy kick( my taste). It was a nice size plate for under$20, and that was with the watermelon drink I added. The greens were a bit to vinegary for my preference, but the macaroni and cheese didn't disappoint. Overall: I would say great takeout or chill spot to play pool and have a nice hardy lunch. (Just make sure it's served hot).

There is a new ribs joint in town on Gresham Road. This is a dine in, take out, call in sit down and eat restaurant. Very casual place. Friendly service, prices are reasonable. I purchased a slice of cake for 3.75$ and rib plate was enough for two. Plentiful. Amble parking in rear. Covid_ consciousness. I appreciated that. I did however have a lengthy wait for order, but did not mine because we sat ouside and soaked up the sunshine. I was also disappointed that they don't offer baby back ribs. Nonetheless, I will return for a second round of the menu. Very glad to see BO business in the neighborhood. Go out and support.

The food was great. I ordered for myself and husband. The young lady who assisted me with my order was "WONDERFUL, FRIENDLY and a JOY to speak with. I purchased the rib dinner (4 ribs, collard greens and mac-n-chese) and chicken dinner (can't remember the pieces, greenbeans and potato salad). I also purchased a chocolate cake which I did not receive. I will definitely be coming back for more.

We tried this restaurant after moving to the area a few months ago. They definitely have the best bbq sauce we've had in Atlanta so far. We always get their special sauce. We've gotten their food several times now and everything is consistently good. We normally get the combo that comes with bbq chicken, ribs, rib tips and 2 large sides. I wish they would offer a diet soda option. They are take out only.

The food was not like any of those other reviews. It had no taste. Add some seasoning to the meat, the sauce alone ain’t it.

Long, but worth it for a true review. I'd been wanting to try GQs on Gresham for sometime. I'd been their customer when they were located on Metropolitan so I was excited to see if the flavor I remembered had followed them to the Eastside. A few months after the location opened I walked in and sadly my excitement was dimmed by the counter person who explained that ribs were not available for the next hour. A rib place, sold out of ribs at the start of lunch? But que se ra se ra. I chose to dine elsewhere that day. Another month or so went by and while planning a family gathering I was reminded that GQs offered a large family meal for less than $50 so I decided to try again. I entered the establishment an hour after opening and placed my order. I sat down in the waiting area and 15 minutes later was called up to the counter. The cashier explained that they were, you guessed it, out of ribs once again. She said they would be ready in 45 minutes. Knowing that my family was already waiting on dinner I opted to dine elsewhere once again. I figured it was just my dumb luck so I decided to try once again. Third time is a charm after all. However, this time I called the order in. I placed the order at 5:04 PM. I told the order taker I would arrive in 20 to 30 minutes. I arrived at 5:38 PM and guess what, there were no ribs! The cashier explained that they don't hold orders since people call in orders and never show. 4 minutes past my quoted arrival time and my $50+ order had been given to another customer. The cashier said more ribs would be ready in 30 to 45 minutes. I had children to tend to so I let the cashier know either myself or my significant other would return. Approximately 30 minutes later I returned and the cashier looked at me in shock. She said, "I thought you were so mad you weren't coming back!" I explained that although frustrated I never said I wasn't coming back. Unfortunately, my order had been thrown away. I hope that she meant the written order and not the $50 worth of food. So I decided to be forgiving and try the food once a for all so I placed my order albeit less than that of the amount of my original order and waited 15 minutes. Now after what seems like quite the quandary of missed opportunities I was finally going to have the chance to try GQs on Gresham. I chose for myself the rib dinner with collard greens, for the children the rib tip dinner with double mac and cheese and a chicken dinner with mac and cheese and string beans for my significant other. I added a side of baked beans because I always remembered them being my favorite.. So, here's what I thought: Large meat portion sizes. The sauces are unique and tasty. The collard greens had a decent flavor although a little heavy on the vinegar. Baked beans were pretty standard but kind of sweet. I like them that way but just be warned. Macaroni and cheese, although a good flavor, had entirely too much black pepper. So much in fact there we black spots through out. Unfortunately the kids could not eat it. The chicken was flavorful but a little too over cooked and dry. And there were several feathers that had to be plucked prior to eating. The rib tips were also overcooked, dry and brittle. Even after drizzling a bit of sauce on them they were still tough to consume. The string beans were pretty salty so it was hard to judge the flavor. Lastly, the ribs that I had waited nearly a year to try after two failed attempts and almost a third. The first bite I tried without sauce. They were evenly seasoned with a nice smoked flavor. The meat itself was pretty fatty but very moist. The next bite I tried with a bit of the Gresham sauce. The sauce just gave it an extra kick but didn't take away from the flavor. So in conclusion I sadly was a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps it was an off night. Maybe the time of day had something to do with the preparation. It just was not the same GQs I remembered. Perhaps I'll give it another try in a couple of more months.

Google
Food good..but I hope you have time too wait..it doesn't matter if you call or not..they don't start doing anything till you arrive..I waited 45 min for one beef sausage! Won't be going back.. better off going to RC Kitchen across the street trust me! Lost a loyal customer!

Yelp
This place is the perfect spot for some home cooked barbecue! It's a small place but they did a great job with the space they have, with a pool table to past the time and sports on one of the TV's and a movie on the other. The service was excellent, helpful and very friendly with that southern hospitality and charm. I drive across the country all the time, I glad I found this gem I can honestly say ONE of the best! If you haven't been here, what're you waiting for?

Yelp
When I first went and got some of the ribs the service was good, the ribs were fresh and good, then I ordered some from Door Dash and the ribs tasted old and they reheated it. Then I went back later that day and I had 3 ppl in front of me and they barely had food to feed them. Then I went twice in one week and they didn't have any food either day, and I called before I went due to my last experience and the lady that answered said they have food and when I got there they didn't have anything. The ambiance is quiet. So it's a hit and miss plus the Parking is funny. So it's not a lot of parking and it's off a busy street so turning in sometimes can be hard.

Yelp
Yum yum! Their Rib and Chicken Combo it is delicious! Worth every penny. They cooked it the way it supposed to be. I was visiting from California and this place definitely exceeded my expectations. Lets not forget about their amazing costumer service. The lady that helped my coworker and i was a true sweetheart. I will definitely visit again this place. :)

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to find this place. I've been looking for a bbq joint w good bbq and sides. It has its own parking lot and looks like a fun place to come and hang out. I saw a pool table on the inside. I got the rib tips which were excellent. They have about 4 or 5 different bbq sauces. I tried the hot. I like hot/spicy but the flavor wasn't that great so I got the house bbq which was very good. My sides were green beans and greens. They were VERY good and flavorful. My mom and I both raved about the greens. They also have a cake display (didn't see cake on the menu though) Anna's used to be my go to for bbq but their food isn't as good as it used to b. I will definitely be returning. I gave this place 4 out of 5 stars due to the long wait. I called my order in and when i got there, not only was it not ready, I had to wait an additional 30 minutes. What's the point of calling in an order???

Yelp
Stopped into this BBQ establishment that was rated pretty high, and it is in my neighborhood. This is more of a carry out spot than a sit down restaurant. The ambiance is not the best, but it is not the draw either. I wanted food for the Family so I picked up the "Out East Feast" which gave a variety of what they had to offer. The ribs were not as tender as I prefer. There was a dry rub that seasoned the meat well, but it was not juicy and falling off the bone. The chicken was really good. Tender, juicy pieces that were well seasoned and had good smoke flavor. I could tell someone took the time to brine the meat because the flavor was consistent throughout. The meal came with jumbo wings and rib tips, both of which was good. For sides there is your choice of the usuals. We had baked beans which had no meat in them, and potato salad which was bomb. This spot had great choices for sauces also. We had the Gresham special which was tangy and not spicy. I will have to try them again another time to hopefully get a better experience with regards to the ribs. If not I can always pick up a bottle of their sauce!!

Yelp
I arrived at the location and it wasn't open, I was informed by a woman who came outside that she was waiting on the "cashier" to show up and she then pointed to a vehicle and said that was him and for me to come back in 10 minutes. I returned and was the first customer, the lady who told me she was waiting on the cashier took my order, so I'm wondering who she was talking about that caused the restaurant to not open as scheduled. I made my order which was for ribs, chicken, and rib tips, collard greens and Mac and cheese as a side. I arrived at 12:08 pm (they are supposed to open at noon) and the whole process took about 45 minutes. Then I get home. My food seems like it was old. There is no way the Mac and cheese was made the same day. The ribs were not tender, quite tough, and very fatty, I can't even bite the rib tips. I haven't touched the chicken because I'm so disappointed in the overall experience. I've had their food before, but this is definitely my last time getting food from here ever.

Yelp
Our order was taken promptly upon entering GQ's Bar B Que. We ordered the Center Cut Rib Sandwich and the Pittsburgh Plate - Late Night with Collards and Mac & Cheese - good flavors. This restaurant was very clean and for some fun and entertainment, there was a full-size billiards table in the dining area for free pool while you wait, along with tv's.

Yoshiyah F.

Yelp
Great flavor on the bones and sauce, but tiny ribs relative to the price. Good customer service and atmosphere.

Yelp
I ordered the ribs tips, Mac and cheese and collard greens. Nice staff and good food! Ambiance great.

Yelp
My mother always said, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. If it was edible will count as "something nice" then, there you have it. What we ordered: 2 Veggie Burger combos, Mac and cheese, baked beans and a banana pudding. The hot take: I understand whole heartedly that I went to a bbq restaurant and ordered the only vegetarian meal on the menu. However, I really wanted to try the place out and support a black owned business in my neighborhood. The quinoa-black bean burger was very loose and flimsy, it lacked a distinct or bold flavor. It also did not have any toppings, no lettuce-tomato-pickle-onion etc. The bun was at least heated. The Mac and cheese was heavy on the pepper, light on the cheese. The baked beans had a very interesting, sweet potato-esque, taste to them. They had loads of brown sugar and cinnamon, but lacked the savory flavor that I expect from baked beans. The banana pudding was too mushy. The vanilla wafers were super soft and no longer whole. The service: I placed my order over the phone. It took three phone calls and two different employees. On call number one we were mysteriously disconnected, still no clue whose fault that was. On call number two, the young lady was talking to me and another customer at the same time. She told me to call her back in a few minutes to finish placing my order. When I finally called back, another employee, seemingly the chef, finished taking my order. When I arrived to pick it up, a THIRD employee came out from the kitchen and told me "for future reference, you have to be in here" to which I replied "huh?" The employee said again "you gotta be in here" so I asked "oh you don't take phone orders?" She said "not for that". I wanted to love this place, I wanted to be able to get a decent veggie burger that didn't come frozen, with a huge price tag or a drive to a "nicer" part of town. This was not it.

Erika Y.

Yelp
The food was good but it was a weird spot. There were really no tables to eat at, inside or out. I assume this must be a takeout heavy place. The hot bbq sauce was very tasty. We had ribs, chicken, tips, Mac and cheese and potato salad. All were good.

Jay R.

Yelp
great service great people and hospitality. Great entertainment ...great black owned busines

Yelp

Yelp
Alright Alright Alriiiiiiiiiiiiight. Well done. I had the "Pittsburg plate After Lunch". Creamy Mac n cheese. Collard greens seasoned really well, but it was the rib tips for me. The sauce is finger lickin good. Sweet and Smokey. I also got the potatoe salad and beans for extra sides. Damn !!! The beans were very flavorful. Nice treat actually. A friend of mine was tellin me about this spot so i had to go. Very clean with a VIP room in the back for parties. $250 an hour for about 25 ppl. That includes 2 meats and 2 sides. I will be back.

Definitely coming back for the ribs and Mac n cheese the next time I'm on that side of town. Need to try salmon burger and beef ribs. So glad I stopped in for lunch.

I ate here for the first time today. I am not sure if they have inside dining. The food was very good. I definitely satisfied the appetite. I loved their sweet sauce that I chose to have on the side with their bbq chicken.

Yelp
IT was my 1sr time coming to GQ BBQ. This spot serves pork, beef, chicken, salmon, and turkey. I ordered a whole chicken$13 with the Golden tangy sauce to the side 10/09/20. It was tender, perfectly seasoned, but not spicy or salty! Temperature of the food was excellent! The place was clean. I'm pleased!! Social distance designated areas, and indicated 6ft tile placement on the floor. The wait was not long. The food was good! I will be back!

Yelp
Tried chicken & ribs dinner w/baked beans, collard greens & Mac n cheese. Each item was delicious. Not overly seasoned. Even bbq sauces were good. Will certainly return.

Yelp
When you walk into GQ's BBQ you'll find that the staff is friendly and down to earth. They didn't lie when they said Jumbo Jerk Wings, they're huge! Although I don't eat ribs, my husband said they were fall off the bone tender and juicy. They also serve down home mac' n cheese, baked beans and collard greens as sides. The sauces were absolutely amazing as well! Go check them out....TODAY!!!

Yelp
My husband order to go and picked up the food. Everything was fresh and tasty. I got the pulled pork. It was super tender. The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is just because it's not the absolute best I've ever had. The food was still good and my husband said the staff was friendly.
