The Most Underrated Restaurants in Denver | Eater Denver

"In Westminster, there’s a barbecue joint worth the trek. Jason Ganahl, the proprietor of GQue, spent years tasting the country’s best smoked meats as a professional barbecue judge before setting off to compete himself. At GQue, he brings all the classic flavors of barbecue to life with dishes such as pulled pork, ribs, apple slaw, mac and cheese, and pit-smoked beans. He’ll also spin a fine yarn about the behind-the-scenes action at a bbq competition." - Rebecca Treon

My teen son and I always drove by this location on the way to his basketball practice sessions as the restaurant was being put in. I was always curious about it and would mention it every time we drove by. After a while my son would just ignore my curiosity. Well we finally stopped in a few weeks ago and had a quick dinner before his basketball practice that evening. My son's initial thought was, "well at least mom will stop talking about it all the time now". But, as soon as he saw the menu and took his first bite of food he was blown away! Probably the best BBQ restaurant we have had in a long time. He ordered one of the Jack Potatoes with pulled pork and I got their hot honey wings with onion rings! Everything was so flavorful and delicious! The potato was so big, 2 or 3 people could have eaten it! For those who enjoy an alcoholic beverage with their meals, they also have a small little bar inside. And for the after dinner sweet treat they also have a little ice cream shop inside. It's a little pricey, but oh so good! Now we both can't stop talking about G Que! Must try 🤗

This was my first time at GQue BBQ in Thornton, and overall it was a good experience. The brisket was a little dry, which was a bit of a letdown, but everything else hit the spot. The mac and cheese was creamy and tasty, the seasoned fries were perfectly crispy, and the beans had great flavor. The highlight for me was definitely the hot wings with blue cheese — absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of heat and tang. I’d come back to try more of the menu!

I've been waiting to visit since I saw the name of the restaurant on their signage. It is located in the old Wendy's restaurant with some of their old staff. The exterior is phenomenal. They set up couches and tables, come summer time this place is going to be popping. There is a variety of restaurants within walking/ driving distance featuring Mexican, Asian, Italian, Greek, chicken cuisine, and several hamburger joints. The one missing ingredient was a good barbecue place, and now we have it. As soon as you enter, you know you're going to be satisfied with what they have to offer. They made some slight adjustments to how the Wendy's was set up. The major difference is the ice cream parlor and the bar. They have a nice variety of food items to choose from. They were out of ribs on a Sunday evening, but given it was their second opening weekend, it was understood. The food was very flavorful. The Carolina pulled pork was outstanding, and I loved the apple slaw with the mustard dressing to die for! We also ordered some chicken wings and cheese fries. Loved them, too. Three people really stood out. One cashier, who took out order and brought it to us, a young lady who was constantly cleaning and checking up on us and the bartender. All females, no name tags or way to recognize them. The only complaint was that everyone huddled to the left of the cashier, including employees, and most workers were wearing black vinyl gloves out on the floor, making it seem like they also handled food. The bill came out to about $35 for two people, no alcoholic drinks. I definitely will return and highly recommend this place. Welcome to Thornton.

Went in tonight, a couple days after the grand opening to give it a try because I've heard good things about the other locations and was not disappointed! When you walk in its very nice! Clean, upbeat and includes a full bar, outdoor patio and ice creamery! The staff was kind and upbeat. Management walked around greeting most people. I was disappointed that neither manager stopped to check on us, but I'll survive lol. We tried the pulled pork sandwich and The Nashville Hot smoked and fried chicken sandwich. We also got the seasoned fries. The BBQ pork was extremely good! Topped off with the "Hottish" sauce, was definitely a good choice. I can see why its a popular choice. The Chicken sandwich wasn't bad either. It barely had any Nashville Hot sauce on it so we had to add some more of the hottish sauce. Fries were hot and crispy and very well seasoned! Overall it was a good experience. Glad they are in the neighborhood and hope they do well!! I will definitely be back to try some other meats, some ice cream and their $1 happy hour beers!!

This was the 1st time coming here. The food was great, especially the brisket. This was the juiciest brisket I have ever had. I recommend the Mac and cheese and the seasoned fries. The mashed potatoes were so-so. All the other meat we got was great too. Be sire to ask about the complimentary texas toast/picked onions/pickles. I thought the pickles were amazing. It was a bit pricey for a family of 5 to go though.

Hit this new location for the Grand Opening. Major fan of the Westminster location. Great BBQ, small bar, delicious ice cream, great service, outdoor seating, has drive thru for pick up only. Excited to finally have a BBQ joint in the neighborhood.

Google
GQue BBQ Thornton was delicious! The staff was attentive and friendly. The dinning area was clean and spacious. The food came out quick and was extra yummy. My husband was even telling people on our way out, and their way in, how great it was.

Google
Great experience. My husband ordered from the Westminster location but we showed up at Thornton and they offered to make our order with no hesitation. We stayed there to eat vs take out with a 1 and 3 year old, which we almost always try to avoid. Service was great and food even better. Best bbq I’ve had in years. They offered a free scoop of ice cream to my son. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I have contributed to Yelp, and what better time than now with this restaurant. We just recently returned from Texas visiting family and we're craving some good BBQ, and had been wanting to give this place a try. It seemed a little pricey, but you can't put a price on good food (you get what you pay for). We took our Granddaughter, and Great Granddaughter (who approved of the Mac and Cheese) and meet a couple other family members (Texans), and we all felt that the food was pretty good. The true test was the brisket. The brisket was very tender, yet still moist, and also had a lot of flavor. The pulled pork was also very tasty. They also had three different bbq sauces available for you to use, which were all good, and not overpowering like other establishments. The staff were very courteous, and the establishment was very clean and welcoming. All in all we were all very impressed.

Yelp
The good is the tenderness of the brisket and pork. The bad is they put an huge amount of salty seasoning just before serving that destroys the flavor of the meat. Note to self: if I eat here again I will definitely tell them not to put the seasoning on my meat. BBQ sauce should be addictive. The sauces are passable but not memorable.

Yelp
We are happy to have another local food joint on this side of town. We love gQue, but the prices nowadays will make us come a lot less. We have been to the other GQue several of times, so I ordered ahead since I knew this location has been really busy. The pick up system is pretty great since at this location you can pick it up through the drive thru. It was a previous Wendy's that they converted which is pretty cool compared to their other locations. I ordered the chipotle smoked wings which were spicier than I was expecting but not bad. The seasoned fries didn't help though. I also ordered a single Mac & cheese for $4 which was basically a scoop. In total, it was $26 which is a little higher compared to other places. We would come back, but hopefully they have turkey next time because that's my favorite.

Yelp
It's nice to have somewhere to get good barbecue. This joint does not disappoint. The wings are smoked and then fried and I recommended the dry rub rather than the sauces. They are out of this world. They have a nice selection of craft beers and a good selection of canned beer. Happy hour is awesome with one dollar domestic. What a deal! I enjoy sitting at the bar where they have friendly bartenders and two TVs swing in and enjoy.

Yelp
Smelled like urine inside. Not sure why the $80 family meal which comes with 2 meats, but you're up charged for brisket. Overly complicated, I just left without ordering anything. Too bad, was excited cause it's close to my house. I have eaten food and enjoyed it at the Sheridan location many times. Cannot believe we could not order what we wanted.

Yelp
Amazing ribs, meatball sub, mac n cheese, and tasty BBQ baked beans! Go try it as soon as possible!!!

Yelp
Love everything on the menu. So glad there's one here in Thornton now. Join there club online. Lots of tasty specials and deals.

Yelp
Hands down, the best BBQ place in the Denver, Metro area! It's the only place we still go to. delicious food every time. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
I absolutely love this restaurant! We were so thrilled when they were opening a spot in Thornton and every time we get food it beats the time before. Everything is always perfectly cooked and they have my favorite mac and cheese! Additionally they have a super easy drive thru pick up that's a total game changer for getting food in a hurry. They also have a really wonderful rewards system that gives you free items and discounts and I even got a special promo for my birthday which is just so nice! The manager also checks in for feedback and has been amazing with resolving any issues or concerns. Oh yeah and $1 beer during happy hour is also pretty great Highly recommend!

Yelp
I love GQue BBQ! I love ribs and brisket and this place is the best! The ribs are meaty and tender and the brisket has so much flavor. BBQ is my favorite food to eat and it has to be good or I won't go back. I go here at least a couple times a month or more. Their staff are friendly, which makes the experience so much better! I love you GQue!

Yelp
Really Good BBQ. Clean. There is even an ice cream shop in there if you want dessert. Full alcohol options too!

Yelp
Brisket sandwich was super tough and almost inedible. Beans were fine but nothin spectacular. Wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Suzanne E.

Yelp
Service is fantastic and the BBQ is the best in Colorado. If you get the app, you get a free sandwich!
google avatar

Nick R.

Yelp
The bbq is not good. Very tough and almost inedible. Honestly an Arby's sandwich is probably better. Very sad.

Justin G.

Yelp
They claim to have "championship " bbq. Not sure what they won, but the brisket that they served me was flavorless and dry. Tasted like it was boiled not smoked. For a $16 sandwich, I'd expect way more. Try post oak if you want real smoked meat.

Gloriber D.

Yelp
They advertise a promotion with the payment of a membership, and when we claim the offer a second time, they tell us it's different than the first time, changing the "rules" to suit their needs. No explanation! Unhappy family and four fewer customers. I won't patronize a business that works like this.

Yelp
I am kind of a BBQ snob, so I put off eating at GQue BBQ. I wish I hadn't. The pulled pork was delsih, lots of it and the original sauce was great. The beans are to vinegary and sweet. I have finally found good BBQ in Colorado. Just missing the peach slice on the side and it would've been perfection.

Terry T.

Yelp
The bbq ribs were amazing, brisket way above average it's pricy, but what isn't these days! The staff was friendly, and the bar and ice cream shop, just a great Buisness model! My wife is not big on smoked meat but she said "now this is some bbq that even I like"! We will definitely be back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome food and beautiful new place to hang out and eat great barbecue! The ribs and brisket are out out of this world.

Lynn S.

Yelp
Food and service are great! Good music too. Love the Meltdown and cheese fries! I visit as often as I can. I like to take friends so they can enjoy too.

Eva H.

Yelp
The service was great, and the atmosphere was very friendly -- I really appreciated that. However, I ordered the pulled pork and mac and cheese, and unfortunately, both were cold. That was really disappointing, especially given how promising everything else

Yelp
I love the pulled pork sandwich and the sausage. Service was quick and ambiance was nice.

Sadie H.

Yelp
It was wonderful. Normally I don't like to order at a counter but I was ok with it because the staff were so nice and helpful. The place is very spacious with big windows which I liked. We liked the pub atmosphere (but with light) with TVs and beer. there's also an ice cream counter which looked so cool but we did not try it this time. We had a good time and we loved the food. It's in our neighborhood so we definitely will be back but please try it out. You will love it.

Dana T.

Yelp
My experience is that most BBQ places focus on the meats and the sides are ... meh. G-Que manages to put out really good meat, and probably the best sides I've ever had from a BBQ restaurant.

Nicky W.

Yelp
Was eager to try this place as I am from the South and love good BBQ. I haven't found a place yet to make my taste buds happy. The food was ok. It lacked the smokey flavors that a good bbq joint would have. I tried wings, rib, and the brisket. The rub on the wings were the best part. Not wanting to bash the food, but it didn't give great for flavor. I hope the do well, but continue to work on true bbq flavor. The sauces were amazing.

Kathleen H.

Yelp
Excellent food, Excellent service, prices are good. I was pleasantly pleased that they had a bar. Can't wait to try the "Hair of the Dog!"
