Gracie’s Serves up House-Smoked Barbecue From a Refurbished Vallejo Gas Station | Eater SF

"What began as a 16-foot trailer on Springs Road on December 15, 1999, has grown into a refurbished 1930s gas station at the corner of Sonoma and Virginia that turns out an extensive, mostly scratch-made menu of barbecue to hundreds of Vallejo customers every week. Despite never having been to Texas or other barbecue hubs, the food — including smoked or roasted chicken, baby back ribs, pulled pork, and burnt ends — tastes like classic barbecue and is smothered in Gracie’s barbecue sauce. The southern-style sweet tea is served in a Mason jar, brewed with a coffee maker and loaded with sugar, the lemonade is made on site, and their “Swamp Juice” is an Arnold Palmer made with sweet tea; the only thing not made in-house are the Louisiana hot links, which come from Courage Production in Fairfield. I appreciate how customer feedback shaped the sides: the coleslaw was rebalanced with Granny Smith apples and cranberries after being deemed too sweet, cornbread gained creamed corn for density and moisture, and the sweet potato pie was improved by roasting the potatoes after boiling to caramelize their sugars. Named for Ingersoll’s daughter, Gracie’s is as much about community as it is about food — Ingersoll has invested in Vallejo beyond his restaurant, including helping fund the city’s July 4 fireworks in 2009, and he says the best part of the restaurant is the community he’s built." - Ray Levy Uyeda

Fantastic atmosphere on the corner of a busy street — great energy and people-watching. The service was excellent and attentive. The BBQ was definitely the highlight — flavorful and well-prepared. However, the green bean side and gumbo were disappointing, lacking both flavor and key ingredients you'd expect. Overall, a solid spot for BBQ with a great vibe, but the sides could use some work.

Google
Gracie’s has some truly delicious meals! We ordered the sampler platter, and it was perfect for the three of us, more than enough food, with plenty of leftovers to take home. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. The swamp juice was a fun and tasty surprise, and their homemade lemonade was refreshingly good. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a hearty meal and great drinks!

Google
Can't ask for more: delicious, great value, good vibes. Had the rib and link plate with jambalaya and mac, I think it was $22 at lunch. Couldn't believe it. Even the cabbage garnish was good...?! Friendly staff as well. Next to a brewery, this place can't get any better. Would definitely oder catering from here in the future.

If Cheers was a BBQ place that’s what this place felt like. Homey and welcoming place in downtown Vallejo. For Bay Area BBQ, Gracie’s holds its own with the rest, what makes its stand head and shoulders over the others is the value for your money and the great outdoor dinning area. That plus the parking makes it worth the drive for folks like myself who live down in Alameda County.

Google
This is the best BBQ I have had since I’ve been here in California. I would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting some good smoked BBQ! Definitely get the ribs and the spicy sausage.

Google
Hands down the BEST BBQ I HAVE HAD. Every single we got was 10/10. The ribs- amazing omg so Smokey and seriously the best ribs I’ve ever had The green beans & potato salad- AMAZINGGG my kids asked me why I don’t make my green beans like that. Everything was absolutely amazing.

Google
We stopped by to enjoy lunch. The server and atmosphere were both great. The food was only warm and the ribs were a bit dry.

Google
Enjoyed the outdoor seating. There was a seating event going on, that was entertaining. 25th anniversary for Gracie's. However, the bbq plate was a little underwhelming. I was expecting more flavor and seasoning.bbq sauce should be optional when it comes to meat. It should have enough flavor to eat without the sauce. The meat needed the sauce. Potato salad was flavorless also. The beans are pretty good. I'd return to try something different if I were in the area before I count them out totally though.

Yelp
Gracie's came highly recommended by a local in Vallejo, and it did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality and service were exceptional the staff was warm, welcoming, and incredibly accommodating, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. We ordered the family barbecue dinner, and it exceeded our expectations. The portions were generous, the flavors were outstanding, and every dish was prepared with care. It was the kind of meal that brings people together and leaves you fully satisfied. For anyone looking for a great barbecue experience in Vallejo, Gracie's is a must-visit. Between the outstanding food and the genuine hospitality, this is a place we would gladly return to and wholeheartedly recommend. Family friendly . I just love the entire aesthetic of this location.

Yelp
BIG price, small portions Service is ok I order to go and that good enough for me I've never eaten on the premises and do not plan too. Their to-go menu online is limited and costly.

Yelp
The reviews that led us to go to Gracie's were very misleading. We expected it to be fantastic but it was a horrible experience. It took nearly 40 minutes for our food to arrive - after taking our order, our server disappeared. We never saw him again. Someone else delivered it. The meat (pulled pork for me, tri-tip for my partner) was lukewarm and dry as dust. ZERO juiciness. Cole slaw was slightly sweet but bland. Disappointing. The beer - a bottle of Lagunas IPA - was the only bright spot. I walked up and asked for my check, otherwise who knows when someone would have brought it. We'd already waited too long. NOTE: Those chairs aren't designed for long-term sitting - they became uncomfortable after 20 minutes. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in years.

Yelp
I went here for my moms birthday celebration 1st time being here I loved it i love the atmosphere outside the waitress (I don't recall her name ) she was really nice helpful also. Would love to go back soon. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Felt welcomed here at Gracie's. Dining at their indoor patio was a chilling experience, but fear not. Request to turn on their propane heating lamps and you should be all cozy. The food turned out great. We ordered chicken, brisket, slaw, and green beans. A preference of mine is a fatty AKA moist brisket. Their brisket is on the lean side and some may prefer it. It would be nice to have a choice between the two. Great BBQ located in Downtown Vallejo. Ample private parking and street parking if need be.

Yelp
My husband took me there 13 year ago and we ate there last Friday 10/24/2025 at 11 am. I ordered the chicken and tri tip and he order everything. Even till today the food is AMAZING. Family owned dinner that is to die for. Must visit!!!!!! The owner is so nice and greeted his customers and thank them for coming today. He even asked if they needed anything else. My husband told me that restaurant has been opened for over 20 years and it was clean and presentable. The bathroom was cleaned and the severs are so polite and courteous. We could tasted the smoke bbq on the chicken ribs tri tip and sausages. So delicious. The potatoes salad and greens hit the spot. Omg and the Mac and cheese and corn bread 10/10.

Yelp
Been going to Gracie's since childhood, and they've always had a welcoming, family-style atmosphere. It's been years since I've had them, but I got it delivered yesterday. They really stepped their game up with the mac & cheese, love the tiny cornbread loaves, and the tri-tip was melt-in-your-mouth tender! Thanks for all the memories, Gracie's!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Bumping up from 1-star to 4. Yes, they've improved (thankfully). Same short ribs (they didn't go back to the longer ones with ends), but now the ribs are juicy and flavorful. The ribs also pair well with the beers they serve next door (Vallejo Brewing Co). Staff is super friendly. Really nice people.

Yelp
A great, comfortable , conveniently located, fair priced , simplistic menu and great flavors coming from their selections of beef and chicken choices 4me . I ordered a 1/2 smoked chicken & tri-tip combo plate w/Mac and cheese , Cole slaw , corn bread and an excellent beverage called ,,," swamp juice" !( pretty damn good ) Like I mentioned earlier the smoky mesquite flavor they got going on is excellent and might I mentioned their signature bbq sauce is tasty The Mac n cheese ....Sorry Gracie ,,,, need a lil more work ! very bland and almost cheese tasteless . Other than that I've been here twice and it's great every time !!! Giving Grace 4the Mac Though

Yelp
I took my staff to Gracie's after hearing great things about it, and it absolutely lived up to the hype! The staff was kind and welcoming, and the atmosphere was perfect. They even have a beautiful covered patio in the back, ideal for summer dining. The food was incredible. It's rare to find BBQ that's both flavorful and perfectly cooked--not dry or over-seasoned like so many places. This spot is definitely going on our favorites list!

Yelp
The salad was wonderful The ambience was decent However the service was not as expected due to the woman at the register she wasn't very welcoming and was very sarcastic. The jambalaya soup had flavor but no seasoning and the macaroni and cheese as well as the Spanish rice was bland. I ordered the hot sandwich and asked for cheese however they gave me cold shredded cheese on the side. I would give this experience 2 out of 10, and I'm saying a two because of the salad. The salad was the only thing I would go back for..

Yelp
This place is good. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which I thought came with coleslaw & cheese, but I may have not ordered the right one. But basically it was just the pulled pork on a bun and they gave me the bbq sauce on the side. It was delicious. The flavor was insane. I also ordered a small salad named the "baby blue" and that too was amazing: I'm sure everything they have is delicious. I will be back. 10/10

Juan P.

Yelp
The food isn't the same. The chicken was dry and the ribs as well. The only thing that was good from the plate was the cornbread.
google avatar

Blanca G.

Yelp
Best Cobb salad, their smoked bacon is so good. The pesto pasta salad is amazing and the bbq is good too! Also, I highly recommend their Thanksgiving dinner it fed my guest of 18-20 people with plenty of leftovers.

Mandy S.

Yelp
An other home run from Gracie's. No matter what we get from the personal plates we get when its just a few, to the Super Family feast when its the whole shop all the way down to the Thanksgiving Dinner, we are THANKFUL for Gracie's!! EVERYBODY loves it!! Caliber Collision loves you guys! XOXO

Yelp
I actually hadn't been to get in several years. The last time I went I think I won a gift certificate and I came over. I thoroughly enjoyed myself that day. I was a little disappointed that's the only thing that stood alone without having to season or flavor it was the beans. The potato salad didn't have any flavor, so I poured barbecue sauce on it, which made it taste so much better. The ribs, I like a rib that tastes seasoned and delicious without adding barbecue sauce. I think barbecue sauce should set off the rib. So without the sauce I probably wouldn't have eaten the ribs. On a positive note, today was their anniversary. So the rib plate was only about $21. It's hard to find any rib plate for $20. So that was a good deal. I didn't buy anything to drink but last time I was at this location the drinks were good. Looking at the menu, the combination of flavors sounded like they would taste pretty good. If I'm in Vallejo again,. I may try something different on the menu. Service was good. It's kind of like.. you order your food, you go find a seat and you have to come back and check on your food to pick it up. I wasn't asked if this was a dine in or to go so my assumption is this is how it operates. Now that was a different experience for me. I like the fact that they do have outdoor seating. I'm assuming it's dog friendly because I saw a pet bowl back there. I dont really have anything terrible to say about Gracie's, I just wish the food had a little bit more seasoning, flavor. Check my video for more footage on We.must.consume IG

Yelp
This food is OK. Definitely would not recommend this place. The tri-tip was really dry. The ribs tastes a little smoky, which has a smoke ring but flavor not there. For what I paid, to include the sausage, it's not worth it in my opinion. This whole meal together was $35 and I would have rather went to Applebee's and got their 2 for 25. I honestly think famous Dave's is better and they are a chain.

Yelp

Yelp
Tried both the brisket and the pulled pork and both were great. Ice tea and lemonade made in house and served in giant mason jars. Their garlic roasted green beans were surprisingly really tasty. I might skip the Mac and cheese next time and try something else. Great patio and open air seating.

Yelp
I have a class in Vallejo on Sundays around the corner from Gracie's, so I have been eyeballing this place for a few months. Today I finally took the plunge and stopped in for some takeout; A Tri-tip sandwich (no cheese) with a slide of slaw. Service was super friendly and the food was out in no time. I'm not a fan of overly sauced bbq, so I was pleasantly surprised to find my sauce on the side! I tried a few bites before heading home, and oh my! The Tri-tip has a beautiful smoke ring and is so tender and flavorful. Their BBQ sauce is also really nice, but absolutely unnecessary with this meat. The slaw is so colorful and tasty! (purple cabbage, green cabbage, carrots, and I'm not sure what else) Plenty of parking when i was there (I think they have a parking lot, but I was parked on Marin), and the restaurant appears to have plenty of indoor seating. There is so much mediocre overpriced BBQ in the Bay Area, it's a relief to find a place that is genuinely good (and reasonably priced) I look forwarding to getting food from here again!

Yelp
Sometimes it's good sometimes it's okay sometimes it's nasty maybe different chefs different days

Yelp
You can dine in the open air restaurant or order and eat at Vallejo Brewing Company next door. We chose the latter as it was a little too chilly for us. Food was good overall (we had ribs, chicken club and pulled chicken bowl). With they had a potato side that wasn't potato salad. They give you a good bit of food so you may have leftovers!

Yelp
We ordered on DooDash and for some reason Gracies Family Bbq felt so right on a Friday night. We had the pit master and bbq chicken and ribs. Everything!! about Gracies down to the pesto pasta was outstanding and delicious . I think I died and went to heaven twice.

Yelp
Great service! Family owned and operated. New menu too! Outside has heaters and inside has bar seating.

Yelp
excellent food and excellent . Live in Napa Valley and I will never eat barbecue in Napa to Calistoga ever again. is it for us. Please stay this way. You'll always be busy.

Yelp
I ordered delivery. Everything was nicely packaged nothing was leaking. The food was absolutely amazing. This was some of the best barbecue I've had in a long time. I will definitely be back.

Kammy H.

Yelp
5 STAR + We've been coming to this barbecue spot for over 25 years, and it's still just as fantastic as day one. The food is consistently tasty, the place is spotless inside and out, the owner is involved in day to day operations, and the customer service is always top-notch. Today, our server Kayla took great care of us--smiley, friendly, and made us feel right at home. It's rare to find a place that stays this good for this long. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Natalya S.

Yelp
Food was so delicious and reminded us of bbq we've had in the south, highly recommend trying this place out. Has pretty nice outdoor seating and the service was nice and quick. Their ribs and mac and cheese were my favorite!

Jessica G.

Yelp
My family and I went for the first time 2 weeks ago and dinned in, it was family and children friendly it also accommodated my mom who is in a wheelchair. Food was amazing I give it a 10/10 we order the ribs, Tri tip,hot links, Mac & Cheese and the potato salad. Are server was a young lady who was very nice. This hidden gem was amazing clean.

Nene N.

Yelp
I tried their barbecue for the first time and I was disappointed. It's a absolutely not. The food is not seasoned with love. It could be a lot better. My chicken was not cooked all the way it was still pink in the inside. The cornbread was the only thing good. I will not be back.

Yelp
I've been going to Gracie's since they opened. Always thought they did a great job and served up delicious BBQ. It's been quite a while since I've eaten there. Was in the neighborhood today and thought that some good BBQ would be awesome. So, I motored over to Gracie's and was warmly greeted by the nice lady running the front of house. She took my order of a combo chicken and rib meal with cornbread and two sides. I got potato salad and coleslaw. I sat down and a few minutes later the nice lady brought my BBQ to me. That was super fast. Zoomed home with the sweet aroma of BBQ in the truck and it took will power to keep from gnawing on a rib. But I waited. Got home and fixed myself a plate, one rib, a chicken thigh and the sides. Took one bite out of the rib and it was dry as can be. Hmmm that's not like the Gracie's of old. Took a bite of chicken thigh and it was the same way. Dry. So dry I had to drink a lot of water to wash it down. Hmmmm. Sides were decent, but nothing to write home about. Didn't eat the cornbread because of probable wheat flour to which I'm allergic to. I get the feeling my BBQ had been sitting out for a long time or maybe it was smoked too long. Sigh. I really was looking forward to a good mess of 'Q.
google avatar

Sandy L.

Yelp
Ordered a pit boss plate with double side of Mac and cheese. My particular order came with chicken, jalapeño link, a taco, and ribs. And of course a piece of corn bread. My favorite was probably the link. It had just the right amount of spice (most would consider it somewhere between mild and medium spicy). You could taste the flavors and keep going back for more than one bite. The chicken was also favorite. Very flavorful and moist. Everything else was okay but I'd skip it a second time around to try something else. I can't comment on the service and ambiance since this was a to go order. Overall satisfied and I would bring friends here if someone was craving American BBQ.
google avatar

Miss B.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. Its homemade flavor, but better. The potato salad has bug chunks of potato, some hardboiled egg, it is perfection. The ribs are tender, the meat comes right off the bone. The mac & cheese is how I make my own, and not overly cheesy & stiff. And those cowboy cookies?! HUGE! Moist & chewy, slightly crispy. Order 2. Food is fantastic. You wont be sorry!

Yevgenia

Yelp
The best bbq in CA north of L.A. Came here for dinner after a day at Six Flags and it was amazing.

Yelp
Tons of good food for a good value. Helped us feed everyone at our party and everyone was impressed. Our guests event got to take to go boxes since there was so much food! Will definitely be ordering again in the future.

Victoria F.

Yelp
Dry, dry, and more dry. What happened? Yall used to be really good. Maybe I just caught you guys at a bad time. But only reason I did 2 stars cause the hot link was juicy and good. An the customer service is always nice. But barely got through our ribs and tri tip because it was so dang dry. The ribs were almost as dry as jerky. My tri tip was also very cold. Very disappointed.

Amy M.

Yelp
Great service, great pulled pork, potato salad and coleslaw are the best. We are from Texas and have been on the hunt for really good bbq. Gracie's is it!

Santiago Q.

Yelp
Gracie's I want you to know that we were VERY pleased with everything for our baby shower celebration from start to finish. From the food quality and quantity, exceptional service, and especially your accommodation to our complete menu change with such short notice. We very much appreciate your service and plan to reach out for future events. Kayla you're the best

Kevin B.

Yelp
Poor service, inconsistent food.I would love for this small business to be successful.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and nice. I went to get take out, once I got home I realized one of my sides was missing and the cornbread was dark brown and dry. I was looking forwars to trying this place out but was really disappointed

Robert R.

Yelp
Gracie's is our go-to when we are craving some bbq. We have been going for several years every month or so. Service is prompt and helpful too.
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorites in downtown Vallejo. I always bring my friends here. It's got a cool laid back vibe. Try the Swamp Juice if you're into Arnold Palmers. It's worth a stop just for the juice! I really enjoy their pulled pork/pulled chicken bowl and croissant sandwiches.
google avatar

Nevaeh S.

Yelp
This meal was a solid 5/5. The Mac and cheese is nice and flavorful and has a slight kick to it that adds in the flavor. The ribs fall slightly off the bone and each rib has a ton of meat! My potato salad is always a go to and adds as a nice side dish with the ribs. Gracie's never fails to be my default spot when I can't think of anything else to eat. You can never go wrong with Gracie's

Jessicca B.

Yelp
I use to love this place. I did not have good service last year which prevented me from returning this year. I wish Gracie's would change their menu and offer newer options. Location is not in a good area.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday evening with my husband. They have a small parking lot, but you can find street parking w/ no problem as well. No reservation needed - we were quickly able to grab a table and be seated immediately. We ordered: - Smoked Chicken Croissant Sandwich w/ a side of Mac'N'Cheese: the croissant sandwich was good. I'd eat it again for sure. The chicken was flavorful and moist. I added a ton of bbq sauce which really set it off. - Pit Masters Plate w/ Mac'N'Cheese, Potato Salad, and cornbread: My husband liked all of the meat in this dish. By the end he was licking his fingers so I take that to mean it was good. The downside for both of us were the sides. Both the potato salad and mac n cheese lacked seasoning. The cornbread was flavorless. Next time I'll try the other side options. If you have a craving for bbq I'd recommend swinging by here. Just get the meat and a pie for dessert (forget the sides)!
google avatar

Yelp
Had Gracie's for the first time in years and sorry we hadn't come back sooner. Loved everything on our pit master plate and great sides. Good value and had leftovers for 2 days. Glad to have rediscovered this place. Called in a plate and enjoyed next door at Vallejo Brewing Company. An awesome Friday! Happy they're in town.

Nev A.

Yelp
Very much enjoyed our lunch on the covered patio with mild weather and a parade of classic and low-rider cars going by. Food is great. Ribs were tender and moist and I added sauce that was provided in a bottle on the table. Sides of Mac and Cheese and potato salad were well executed and high quality. Server was cordial although we did end up with empty waters a couple times. Definitely would go back when in town.
