Graduate by Hilton New Haven (New Haven, Connecticut) 3 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Just across the street from the Yale School of Art, a block and a half from the university’s Old Campus itself, is Graduate New Haven, the Bulldogs franchise of the rapidly blossoming Graduate hotel group. The concept is simple: college towns need convenient, stylish, and relatively affordable lodgings, and the common purpose of most visitors provides a ready-made identity for the hotel." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel was everything we needed it to be on a rainy October night. It was cozy, warm, comfortable and quiet. We got a great nights sleep on the 5th floor. The beds are comfortable but small. The hotel feels like you stepped back in time in a good way! The woman at the front desk was helpful and kind. The only thing to be aware of is to enter the lobby you do have to walk up about 6 stairs, and lift your luggage, not sure if there is a ramp or elevator for those who would need it, so check that prior if you would need that. Once inside there is an elevator to the rooms. Parking is also not provided or included with your stay but we stayed on a Sunday and therefore we could park for free on the street overnight, just had to feed the meter by 8am Monday, there are lots of parking ramps within walking distance! We are Hilton Diamond members and were able to use our room credit at the cafe for breakfast which was convenient! After this stay we will be seeking out other Graduate hotels in areas we travel!

I had a lovely time here on a solo research trip. I chose the hotel for its proximity to the Yale Center for British Art. I also found that it was close to many good restaurants and bookstores. The staff was friendly and accommodating, both at the front desk and in the coffee shop and bar. The lobby is charming, with cosy library corners. I got the feeling that it's used a lot by undergraduates for studying. ||I saw some complaints about the instant coffee. To me, it was cute, and if you want real coffee you can just go downstairs and buy some. In-room coffee in most hotels is terrible anyway.||My room was small (just one queen bed), but with two comfortable chairs and a writing desk. The HVAC system was a little hard to figure out. The bathroom was spacious. I do want to point out a design flaw in the bathroom. Because of the way the shower door opens, you can't really use the towel hook beside it, because the hook is behind the door as you open it. That means you have to step out into the middle of the floor before you can reach your towel. They also need grab bars in the shower for safety.||All in all, a very comfortable place. I would stay here again.

Wonderful location (esp to the museums) as it's walkable to most of campus. Very cool common areas to hang out. Our room was spacious, however there was an area of the carpet that was soaking wet near the portable AC unit. We were there just the 1 night, so didn't ask for a room change. One other issue is at the shower water pressure was really low... took forever to wash the shampoo out. The people working at the coffee shop were wonderful...personable & pleasant, and made great coffee. Lastly, they did not tell us we had access to a local gym to use for exercise...learned about that at checkout.

The Graduate Hotel in New Haven is an odd mix of inadequate and over-fussy. The carpet in the elevator was threadbare. My room was stuffy and smelly, but the windows didn’t open. The “coffee machine” promised on the website was a tiny electric kettle accompanied by sachets of powdered coffee — welcome to 1970s provincial British B&Bs, except that no tea was on offer. The curtains didn’t stop streetlight from illuminating the room after dark. |The frou-frou decor was a primer in bad design. Bedside lighting looked like it had been designed by Torquemada in idle moment — tortured assemblages of twisted metal piping. Other lamps went with an altered reality theme — a papier-maché dog’s head, wearing a top hat and smoking a stogie, perhaps escaped from a poker game painted on black velvet. Another appeared to be some part of a printing press, ornamented with bas-relief dolphins distantly descended from Renaissance bronzes. The headboard was castellated, decorated with what might have been victory wreaths. |The staff was pleasant, but they could not fix what was so wrong.

Google
Perfect location. Fun lobby area. Cool vibe. Very comfortable bed and slept well. So why only 3 stars? It was the singular weirdness of only INSTANT COFFEE in the room. It was really horrible tasting stuff and I challenge anyone to think otherwise. It was individually packaged as gourmet instant or something. Is this supposed to be some throwback kitschy thing or something? No tea either. If you can’t have a coffee machine or Keurig, don’t bother. |Go across the street to a really terrific Egyptian restaurant across the street for a delicious breakfast instead.

Google
First time staying at a Graduate by Hilton. Let me start off by saying that I was NOT going to book this room just from the photos of the hotel on the Hilton website, but it was a very cool hotel (outside of the room). The beds are small, very small. The room decor was just...how do I put it without sounding harsh .......ugly. sorry couldn't do it. I travel for work weekly, spending 4 nights a week in a hotel, I doubt I ll ever book another Graduate if this is what they are all like. There are no ice machines anywhere, so you have to request a bucket of ice from the front desk. The employee at the desk was very nice and friendly. The hotel was also very quiet. I did get a good night if rest, which ultimately is more important than room decor. I do wish I had more time to explore the hotel, especially the first floor. The lobby was visually amazing. Parking......ugh, was not fun, nor close, which I know if you are in a city, parking is going to be an issue, which is why I always try to book a hotel with its own parking lot. There is no free parking here, not even for diamond members (which is weird), Ive stayed at other hotels with off-site parking garages, and they validated parking for Diamond Members, but not here. Another reason I likely won't stay here again. We are already paying for the room.

Google
Cool space. Rooms are small, but manageable for a night or two as a solo traveler. Parking isn't onsite, so be aware of that. Hotel isn't well-marked if arriving late. Hotel cleaning services were adamant about knocking on doors well before checkout, if with the DND sign out, which was annoying. Overall, not bad for the location. Plenty of restaurants close. And close to the school.

Google
Graduate by Hilton New Haven is an excellent boutique choice near Yale, beloved for its charming collegiate design, spotless rooms, and friendly staff. Its central location and character-filled spaces make it ideal for visitors seeking both convenience and personality. 🌟 Good to know: If you’re driving, note the lack of dedicated parking. If in-room amenities like a fridge or coffee maker are essential, double-check availability when booking.

Yelp
The Graduate is a gorgeously restored hotel in downtown New Haven. The location can't be beat and is walkable to many different things. Ubers are easily accessible as well. The property is beautifully decorated. The rooms were a decent size as were the bathrooms. They include a mini fridge in the room as well as bathroom amenities such as a hair dryer. There is one elevator for use. The lobby has many places to sit and unwind and is pretty laidback. The front desk staff were kind and let me leave my items there until it was time to check in. The rooms were quiet in the fact that you could not hear anything from other rooms. Our room faced Chapel Street, which could get pretty loud at times especially at night. Plenty of light came in through during the day however. There is housekeeping each day though we declined as we were only there two nights. The one thing about this hotel that stinks is the restaurants or lack thereof. The Old Heidelberg bar downstairs is closed two days of the week and doesn't have good food options or beer options for that matter. It also attracts a young, rowdy college crowd which can be expected i guess... The Poindexter cafe in the lobby was out of all the breakfast foods we wanted which rendered them useless for a pre train ride meal. The staff was also pretty surly. The front desk sells some junk food if you want any but there's no where else on the property to purchase food or drink, even water. Down the street there is Est Est Est Pizza Shop which is not the best pizza you'll have but is open until 1am for food and drink if you need it. Overall, a nice hotel at an affordable place.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our stay, and got upgraded to their Premium King room at the last minute, so that was nice! Pros: -Beautiful decor, everywhere you look from the lobby, to the lounge areas, to the room. Would stay at a Graduate again just to look at the decor! - Free canned water in the room - warm lighting options (multiple different lamps and chandeliers) Cons: - I think the staff are mostly college kids that dressed kind of poorly and had a certain lake of decorum and professionalism. We caught some goofing off and arguing with eachother on more than one occasion during our two night stay. -Coffee at their cafe is steep! For two regular drip coffees in the morning ran us about $10.00 -No microwave in the room - The elevator system can be wonky. I got it figured out after the first day but I had to help more than one frazzled elevator go-er figure out the system. - When you check in, you get free drink chips for the bar downstairs. When you go to the bar and try to redeem, be prepared to be met with a VERY grumpy bartender who tells you it's only for draft beers and "We keep trying to tell the hotel this" -Parking can be a pain....we luckily managed to get street parking every time but yeah. All in all we would stay again, but there are things that could be worked on!

Yelp
I enjoyed my one night stay here. The room was comfortable and I loved the bed. The staff was very helpful, and the shower was a dream. I would stay again as a staycation or just because. It was worth it and because it's so close to all my favorite food places, it was helpful for me to refresh, recharge and restore myself.

Yelp
i found poop on the bed, and the toilet started to explode water everywhere. This traumatized me and my family, and now im hydrophobic.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I enjoyed the decor at a hotel as much as I did on my visit to the Graduate New Haven. The incorporation of history/community into both the lobby and the rooms meant I never lacked for something to look at. The rooms were clean and in good shape, and the bed was comfortable. That said, I don't think I'd stay here again because of the noise (which I guess is to be expected in a hotel catering to guests at a university) and the rough time I had getting back into my room after I was locked out (my own fault but you'd think there'd be a policy so it wouldn't take a herculean effort to fix things?) And because everyone includes this warning: there's no parking. But the garage isn't too far away, and I didn't find it much of a drawback.

Yelp
Found this place on Hotels.com Guys this place is terrific. The staff is all nice, the accommodations are as seen in the pics. warning. They do not have onsite parking . But who cares. City hotels rarely do. This is in a walkable area for sure. The hotel was updated, comfy and clean. The staff was would appear to be mainly college students. I mean the my are smack in the middle of Yale basically. The bed was soft but firm, the room and plugs, usb and was spacious. The bathroom was clean and there were toiletries and plenty of towels. Stay here. Plus it's not $$$. It was like $220 for the night. But before I go. The last photo I wanna add is parking info. It's literally around the corner and was $13.

Yelp
You get a real old money type feel to this hotel with the amazing decor. We were lucky enough to find parking on the street just outside the hotel, but I was slightly disappointed to discover that there was no parking provided by the hotel. There was also no fridge in the room, which took me by surprise. All in all, was a great one night stay.

Yelp
The hotel triple charged me and sold my credit card info for frauding me. One formal and proper charge was charged through agoda for $200.42 on 23 Dec 2024. One for so-called damage for $287.50 on 30 Dec 2024. One for no reason and no receipt for $369.00 on 16 Jan 2025. My husband and I only stayed there one night, checking out on 28 Dec 2024 and not informed of ANY damage when checking out and were happy customers till we recently found these fraudulent activities. We found there were these two follow up charges just today because we found another 3 transactions by the brand name of Hilton (so lucky to be the same?) in past three months in Feb through April for $1,807.18 total, which the final one being so large that finally caught our attention. Oh and by the way, when you call their front desk, they will keep transferring your call to Dylon Patson who never picks up and you call back, they will keep hanging up your call and/or transferring you to the same lady who never picks up. All you can do is to dispute the charges with your credit card issuing bank and hope to get some fairness!

Yelp
Oh Mylanta! This place is fabulous. The room looked just as pictured on the website. Due to Covid impact, valet parking, restaurant and bar were unavailable. No worries, lots of parking and eateries available in the area. The front desk staff were courteous and helpful. All areas were sanitized, procedures posted, and enforced. Will definitely be back post pandemic to take in the full experience.

Yelp
I booked an overnight stay for three people. We got a room with two double sized beds and it was decently sized. The decor is cute and the bathroom/shower space was definitely my favorite with all of the tiles. Wished we had water in the room but the reception had some handy. They were helpful and accommodating. Took off a star because parking sucked. You have to be lucky to find a space on the street.

Yelp
On Labor Day weekend, after a personally exhausting day, we looked forward to staying at the very nice hotel I had booked over the phone directly with the hotel. Unfortunately it was not to be; because of an "online system issue", the hotel had lost our reservation (though we found out the sales department did have a record of it), and they were completely booked. So we had nowhere to stay that night. Thanks to the woman at the front desk, we did find a room at another hotel nearby for a higher price. But we were offered no compensation, even though I'm told by people in the hotel industry that it's customary to cover someone's stay in the case of an overbooked hotel. We were not the only guests this happened to, either; I was told it affected numerous people that day. I assume they were likewise left in the lurch without any attempts to make it right. I'm not impressed with the management's response to those debacle. It took them 3 days to get back to me, after I was told to expect a call the next day, and the manager that called offered no workable solutions. She also tried to tell me they weren't "overbooked", they'd just sold too many rooms because of a "system issue". As if that's not the very definition of "overbooked". I will likely not be staying at the Graduate again, but I hope for other potential guests' sake that this isn't a normal occurrence for them.

Yelp
Honestly, would not stay again. Do not like that they don't have parking on site, which I mean I guess it is what it is in that area, but also they don't validate parking. I'd rather them charge an extra $25 hidden in the cost of the hotel than to feel like I'm driving around the block looking for a parking garage. Secondly, dislike they put an extra $100 hold on your card upon check in - not check out. So instead of a $200 charge, I had a $300 hold on my credit card, but then when I went to be charged, I had a $200 hold plus a $300 hold ($500 altogether) which was annoying and confusing.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our stay here! The student ID cards were a fun touch to the experience. The room was beautifully decorated. Tastefully updated while preserving the senior decor.

Yelp
hotel is lovely. need more cups and towels but the ambiance is cool. Kristina, the night clerk (hopefully manager) was amazing. we came under stressful circumstances and she took amazing care of us. we would definitely stay here again but recommended you offer more in the way of breakfasty options.

Yelp
This place is so darn cute! I was pleasantly surprised by all the little details in the design. It's a nice change from a Hilton or any other chain hotel. The rooms are cozy, but beds are comfortable and it has as much space as you need for a business trip. The location is the best part.. I literally didn't move my car the entire stay. I was able to walk to lots of different bars, restaurants and coffee books. Definitely check this place out next time your in town!

Yelp
This review is for how The Graduate has restored the Hotel Duncan. My path to work has me pass the hotel almost every day, and I have watched the progress. Bravo to the team for meticulously restoring the beauty and grandeur of the old Hotel Duncan, and with a sense of urgency. It's amazing (to somebody such as myself from Chicago) how the project has progressed, and I am excited to have the full experience in the updated historic hotel soon. Thank you and bravo The Graduate!

Yelp
A room with two queen beds is actually a room with two double beds. They charge guests for coffee, unless you use the instant coffee that is on a tray in the bedroom. Coffee cost us $46 over three days -- no free refills even for guests in the hotel. So the room is actually more expensive than it sounds if you are a coffee drinker. And the coffee was not good. I would stay at The Blake or The Study unless you need the admittedly great study room on the first floor.

John T.

Yelp
The hotel is marginally cute but wildly over priced for what it is. I took the "last room available" 2 days before when the price went down to $420 / night for a tiny king room on Agoda for a 4 day stay... the hotel direct price was $100 more and they refused to match. I prepaid and the day I checked in the hotel price was reduced to about half that for the duration of my stay and no option for me to change it. The pricing structure seems designed to gouge guests unapologetically and as much as possible. There was no shame in quoting other people at check in nearly $200 per night in line in-front of me for the same room. The room is very sparse. No bathrobes or mini bar. In fact, there is no restaurant or room service here either. Addendum: still here -- they would greatly benefit from restoring the additional elevator shaft so the super slow (only) new elevator isn't always loaded with their staff and cleaning and laundry carts... On day two of our stay they stopped replenishing our bath gel... on day three they removed our entire bar of hand soap... perhaps this is some curse of room 216 to be avoided... but stay away if you get this room! In lieu of room service they gave me a cup of salt!!! Ha!

Yelp
This isn't a flashy 5 star hotel, but I couldn't be happier considering it a home away from home. The theme of these hotels is interesting but incidental to the wonderful staff (exceptional Valet Team), inviting fluffy bedding, and the feeling that you are actual a valued customer. Thank you Graduate Hotel. See you soon!

Stacie S.

Yelp
What a fantastic stay in New Haven! Taken care at the front desk by our new friends Stephen and Mickela along with Sharon making certain we had everything needed in our room. The staff is always friendly and the stay from a unique eclectic lobby and rooms to the Old Heidelberg bar in the basement provides plenty of space to meet friends and family also staying! We are looking forward to our next visit and staying again!! Thanks for giving us an amazing base while visiting for our daughter's show!!

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, beautiful room, and great location. We had reserved a pack and play for our baby and arrived late at night. It wasn't in the room when we arrived and the desk attendant couldn't find it initially. He then worked diligently with the manager to find it. Because of the delay, our room was upgrade and our stay comped. The hotel staff and management went above and beyond to make up for the initial inconvenience and we had a lovely stay.

Rhoda M.

Yelp
Kinda disappointing. The concept is great, and the room was comfortable, but the service was disappointing. They truly did not seem concerned that our a/c was not working during a heat wave. Nor the very disconcerting stain on the carpet.

Yelp
Stayed here once on Thanksgiving and came back again for New Year's Eve. I was impressed with the hotel -- spacious, interesting decor, friendly staff, no pet fee. There were some issues with the cleanliness of the room on Thanksgiving, which make sense for a nascent hotel to have, but they were gone by the time we returned a month or so later. Only real complaint is that you have to go up a lot of stairs to get into the hotel, which isn't very convenient when you have a ton of stuff to schlep. Great place overall. Will stay again next time I'm in CT.

Yelp
HORRIBLE. They double charged me, it took 3 different sales associates to check me in. Overpriced. Overrated. Poor service. I will not be back. "The Study" Hotel New Haven next door is much nicer and worth the money. The Graduate is not.

Garrett S.

Yelp
Very beautiful spot. Great customer service. The coffee shop in the hotel is very good, and the entire atmosphere was very nostalgic and vintage. Well done.

Caitlyn W.

Yelp
The Graduate in New Haven is really cute, but it certainly has flaws. There is no valet parking, so you have to pick from a parking deck around the corner or street parking. The staff also wasn't very friendly or helpful. Check-in was painless, but after that, every time we came and went from the building the front desk was empty. This place is a little too pricey to provide such a lackluster experience.

Yelp
This is the second time I've stayed Graduate Hotel New Haven and I've also stayed at the hotel in Providence. Generally, I've had four out of five star worthy stays. However, this time in New Haven was something very different. I hedged my bets and booked on Hotels.com at a lower price (not cheap) at $174 per night for two nights for total including tax of about $415 for a king room. Upon entering the room I found coat hangers strewn on the bed, trash on the floor, wastebaskets not emptied, towels on the bathroom floor, and window shade not working. I decided to let it go. After all, the is an upscale/funky (4 star?) hotel and you can expect some idiosyncrasies. (I had even considered the possibility that the bedsheets had not been changed from the previous guest.) I would also add that I wasn't advised upon check in that all hotel TVs were not working. I called to and desk clerk said it would be "repaired very quickly". Still no TV after two days. After returning this afternoon with the room cleaned, but the same trash was left on the floor and in the trash baskets from the previous guest. It's a small thing, but I was grossed out and livid. I did complain to the front desk at this point. I will also add that the staff at breakfast on Saturday morning was missing from the coffee/pastry bar. After 20 min., the server ultimately rushed in (after a smoke) with a friend. It also seems that the all the staff engages among each other with idle chitchat. And when speaking to guests they seem to alternate between indifference and being obsequious -- just give me simple hellos with the facts please and be straightforward. This hotel fell short of a few Unit to walk for graduation. Next time I will walk to another hotel.

LaTash S.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME!! From the staff to the photos on the wall.. This establishment DELIVERS! So welcoming! So beautifully put. It's no way you can't fall in love
