On the Grid : Graffiti Alley

"Like many cities, Baltimore has its mix of urban subcultures. Graffiti Alley just happens to be the proving ground for veteran, visiting, and developing street artists. Crews from all over the East Coast have ventured to this enclave, tucked away in Station North, to collaborate on murals and individual pieces. Graffiti alley has provided many fashion and hip-hop photographers with a colorful backdrop that personifies Baltimore's embrace of street culture." - Leo Brady

Yelp
Thank you, Baltimore. This place is amazing and beautiful. We walked here between appointments nearby. It was so worth the walk.

Yelp
Came here as a tourist attraction and it's an awesome place to take pictures and like others have said maybe shoot a music video. We came at night so I deducted a star, very sketch neighborhood and wouldn't recommend coming at night unless you keep your head on a swivel and you're ready to accept whatever may happen. With that being said, a really cool place to come check out

Yelp
This is a dope little spot. I have been several times but on this trip, I took a few family members who were visiting. Its definitely a hot spot for a photoshoot or to simply browse and appreciate the art. I love that its easily accessible and in the heart of city.

Yelp
A good buddy of mine moved near Graffiti Alley which gave me extra motivation to return. No long reviews here, it's just as dope as I remembered during my first visit with my then girlfriend, now Wife. This go-round was a guys day type deal where we smoked cigars, drank cognac and took some really cool photos. To those that are like me - you enjoy authentic Baltimore culture... this place is a must visit. For the art. For the vibes. Just because.

Yelp
I have to say this was quite a neat find, thanks to Yelp. And it's definitely an "Instagrammable" location! I had the pleasure of visiting the Graffiti Alley in Winter/Fall 2022. To be exact, the location of the Graffiti Alley is: Charles North - Howard St & W 19 1/2 St. It is an L-shaped alley owned by the Graffiti Warehouse; you can never predict what designs you're going to see because frequently it's repainted throughout the year. Fun fact: Graffiti Alley is the only legal art space in Baltimore City where street artists can create their work freely without fear of prosecution. Although for some people graffiti may be seen as uncivil vandalism, for others it is an art filled with heart and soul for those whose lives are shaped around it. If you're ever in Baltimore, I highly recommend checking out the Graffiti Alley and definitely getting some cool pics for IG :)

Yelp
Cute little tourist attraction. Met a lot of dope artists there tagging the walls. Whenever I'm in Baltimore I love to stop by and get some pics for the gram because the scenery is always different. They charge for parking now but it's not too expensive.

Yelp
I've come here multiple times for music videos and it has given us some AMAZING results. They're staff are nice and leave you to your work but easy to get when you need them. We love the flexibility of each room and will continue to return!

Yelp
Graffiti Alley is exactly what it sounds like. I'd passed by it on my bus route multiple times and decided to walk to check it out this past weekend. It's not a huge area, and it's definitely graffiti (not murals). And, yeah, it's an alley (definitely don't dress up or wear open toe shoes because you're going to take cute pictures for Instagram here). It changes up constantly, because people graffiti over each other all the time (I saw a woman with a spray can at 8 am on my bus route this week!). It's worth checking out if you're interested in graffiti or need a cool new profile picture.

Yelp
Graffiti Alley is a beautiful gem to the city, easy to miss. Because of the pandemic, I have been looking for ways to express my creativity. I had an opportunity to express myself through a photoshoot with a local photographer. This location is perfect for IG content, marketing a product, or creating a music video. Be warned this place smells horrible! Try not to touch anything! Bring your Lysol and hand sanitizer just in case. Entry is free and there is plenty of free parking as well. Make sure to get there earlier to enjoy the space without interruptions.

Yelp
Great spot to take photos if you go at the right time. You might get lucky like I did and see an artist doing some work. Remember, it's an alley, not a selfie museum so it might be stinky. It's definitely worth checking out. You don't have to be there very long.

Yelp
I like learning how Hip Hop has influenced each community I visit. Here is one spot that I heard about. Here was my experience Saturday noon. Parking: There's street parking and a parking lot across. You do have to pay based on the day/time. Feels: The spot is not too far away from Maryland life but you are still in an urban area. Be smart and be alert but in the day time especially with multiple people it's a safe place. The art is pretty cool to admire and chop it up with artist that are visiting. Overall: 5 Stars I dig authentic spots and this community. I dig the story behind it plus it's free! For those looking a hip photogenic spot, check this out. #HipHopEd TL;DR Tips: * For those trying to take those cute IG Pics, I'd say come in the early summer time.

Yelp
This place is amazing right In the heart of the West Side of Baltimore City. There's an art studio right in the center of it. Artist from all over come and change the graffiti there on a daily based weather permitting. So you'll always get a something different. There's a parking lot right outside of it and and you have to pay or you'll be towed. You definitely don't want to be towed on that side of town. Be sure to check this spot out and take lots of pictures.

Yelp
Such a cool spot to visit if you are in Baltimore! Graffiti Alley is just that an alley filled with grafftti. Thankfully when we went on a Friday around mid day and there were not a lot of people. Its a great free place to visit. Great for photos and just to enjoy some art. There was lots of parking in the area. We all loved it and would definitely come back next time to see what was added.

Yelp
My comedy group (@lpscomedy757) and I looked up "The top 10 most instagrammable places in Baltimore" after we were booked for a performance, and Graffitti Alley was on the top of the list. We are all about a good photoshoot honey, so when we discovered that Baltimore had a whole alleyway covered in colorful top to bottom graffiti, we were in there. The alleyway was so beautiful, and made for some great pictures. Something cool to note about the graffitti on the alleyway is that it is always changing because artists are always painting over it; We actually met an artist who was painting over the wall to create a fresh new mural during our visit. His name is @thedeadpiratewestly on Instagram. I really love that this space provides a safe and legal space for street artist to express their creativity in an urban area. Overall, I recommend Grafftti Alley to anyone who lives in or is visiting Baltimore. Time to grab your phones, tablets, or DSLRs and take in the most breathtaking artwork Baltimore has to offer!

Yelp
So pictures of Graffiti alley kept popping up on my friend's Instagram years ago. I asked my friend where this place was and he said it was a photographer's secret. This dude likes to tell chicks he's a photographer and takes them there for "photo shoot" dates. Keep in mind he's an IT guy with a droid phone, not a pro photographer. So I found it anyway, on Yelp. Under local flavor, so there Dave, how you like them apples? This place is truly a hidden gem. It is a L-shaped alley filled with amazing graffiti from local artists. This is the only place where graffiti is legal and the art changes. According to Atlas Obscura, this alley was a heroin shooting alley and a blow job spot for people who didn't want to rent a room at the motel next door. But the "Graffiti Warehouse", a studio filled with street art, decided to locate its headquarters adjacent to the the alley in 2005 with the hope of converting the criminal backstreet into a painted haven for artists. The alley was easy to get to. I found a parking lot right by it and walked right up with my photo crew. There was only one other couple there that seem to go between screaming fighting to taking pictures and of each other so it's kind of strange. So if you are in Baltimore, stop in for a colorful treat.

Yelp
Graffiti Alley is awesome!! It's extremely small, but full of amazing pieces! My family photographer has shot here a few times and posted photos, so once she announced fall sessions and this was a location, I HAD to shoot there! This small alley has soo much to see! It's ever changing!!! My Guy and I were lucky that an artist had just painted the Erykah Badu mural right before we arrived! It was still wet!! We were so lucky to shoot that day as there was a Tupac, Kendrick Lamar and Erykah Badu! We were going for a cool hip hop vibe and we totally got it! I love Graffiti Alley! Our couple photos came out amazing!!

Yelp
A mind blowing mesmerizing array of art, the stories are there, you just have to have the imagination to read what it says, honestly what a collection

Yelp
I love love love this place, I will definitely be going back during the week, when it's less people there, great spot for photography, spicing up your ig, video shoots, great art work, I love that it's legal to graffiti here, such a gem.

Yelp
Graffiti Alley, hidden in the art district of Baltimore, less than 1 mile away from the train station. Never heard of it? Well that is because this little alley is not visible from the street, but luckily fellow Yelp members created a Yelp page and reviewed this place so that I could find it. Between 19 1/2 street from Howard Street, you will find this outdoor graffiti art gallery, so to speak, with vivid colors, designs and words creatively adoring all of the walls, floors and even trash cans down this "L" shape alley. Just as you have read from other fellow Yelp member reviews and seen in their photos, this is a neat place to take in some local perspective and take a few photos. Based on some of the photos on this Yelp page and a few brief articles written about Graffiti Alley (in which you can google on your own), it looks like the designs on display here change often. So even if you were to visit this place today, perhaps a few months from now, there will be new images/ art. No where else in Baltimore is graffiti legal but here, behind an art warehouse. Definitely worth a quick visit if you are in this area to see talented street artists works of art. Please note that the alley way is not shaded so if you come during the hot and humid summer (like my husband, myself and our little girl dog did), you will have a lot of direct sun hitting your face.

Yelp
The sign of a cool city is whether or not they have a alley of graffiti. Baltimore is cool. Unlike other cities, a graffiti alley fits Baltimore well. Their official Graffiti Alley is in a part of town that throws it back to Baltimore's industrial roots while nodding to the new art galleries, community spaces, and independent coffee shops nearby. Graffiti Alley is an L shaped alley with graffiti everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. Brick walls from top to bottom AND the street you walk on are painted all types of colors, slogans, and profanity. If you're into art and/or looking for a new Instagram profile photo, go here. Like all alleys, entrance is free.

Yelp
We decided to make our way over here on a random Saturday afternoon. Just found this place while scrolling through yelp. (Thanks, yelp - you da real mvp) This place is soo cool! There is artwork on the walls and on the floor. This is definitely a fun way to spend a few minutes - maybe an hour or two max just looking at all of the colorful graffiti. When we went we bumped into a photographer who was taking pictures of a recently engaged couple. Other than them, it was just me and my husband. It was not crowded at all. The alley happens to be near MICA. (MD Institute College of Art) so im assuming the students help add to the art. The cool thing about this alley and graffiti itself is the fact that people are always adding to it and so its never the same - it keeps changing and more people are able to leave their mark. On to logistics-there is a parking lot nearby so parking is not an issue at all. Also this place is free. Yes, I said free. For all you aspiring instagram models out there - this is your spot, your pics gon be straight fiyyah!

Yelp
Loved this place! I will visit again soon. It's ideal for photo ops as well so I definitely will return.

Yelp
Such a cool spot to check out if your visiting Baltimore and it changes every time you come sometimes just random graffiti and sometimes beautiful murals. That's what makes it so interesting and cool. I think this is the only place legal in MD to do graffiti as well.

Yelp
Was just in the city to explore out the whim and quickly searched what attraction was within in the vicinity. This happened to pop up and thought hey why not. The display is located in like a L shape alley and there's a parking lot conveniently right across from it. You can also squeeze into the confined alley and park alongside if space is available. Got to witness a guy spray-painting and a couple of people having a photo shoot. Wasn't anything too spectacular, but good enough to take a quick stroll and/or a few snapshots.

Yelp
Fun, hidden gem. Worth the 7.00 uber from downtown. great chance to grab some photos and check out a different part of the city. it wraps around a big alley, and a street corner. We headed over here on a bright, sunny, beautiful summer day--encountered about 4 diff photo shoots going on. some people even leave around spray paint--you bet i tagged my name on something. heads up the location doesnt have an exact address but take the cab to the popeyes that's across the street or to the "joe squared" and cross at the light, you will see it on your right. address: 33 W. North Ave. Baltimore, MD 21201

Yelp
Funky public space alert! This is a popular space for photo shoots and therefore, totally instagrammable. Art is always changing which makes this a great space to visit again and again. Find free parking on the street and you can expect to find groups and singles taking photos at any given time. It's a free spot so come out and check out the best Baltimore street artists.

Yelp
we did a drive by to graffiti alley only because there were some questionable individuals hanging out at graffiti alley that we... didn't wanna risk loitering around. other than that, it's definitely located in a sketchy area but the graffiti was definitely cool to see! suggest going only when daylight is out, and be cognizant of your surroundings.
google avatar

Yelp
Even though I'm from Baltimore this was my first time checking out graffiti alley. There are definitely a lot of talented artists in the city. Whoever did the sexy Squidward is my hero lol. The area is slightly sketchy if you are not from here, but it's worth checking out. Honestly, it was a lot smaller than I expected, but I look forward to checking it out later in the year to see if there is anything new.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by here after a stay at The Ivy Hotel. The colors are vibrant, the art is cool and it's a great spot for an impromptu photo shoot. Like someone else mentioned don't make this your main event for the day but it's a good for a quick stop.
google avatar

Ethan O.

Yelp
Graffiti alley is a cool spot where it is legal to spray paint design art and put it on the wall. Most of the rest the state it's illegal to do that. It's a spot you can walk by probably takes about 10 to 15 minutes to see everything if you look close. However the spot changes regularly as it's actively being repainted by everyone who wants to. Worth stopping by on your way to something else and worth a repeat visit.

Yelp
It was everything I thought it would be. I had a photo shoot for one. Selfied my way through. The mural for Toni Morrison was beautiful. It was not crowded. Be careful coming here you will drive by it just after you turn the corner so go slowly. The colors and the skills folks have were amazing. You will get some great photos. This was one of the spots I scouted before coming down for a conference. I'm glad I made this one of the places on my itinerary. It's a walkable space. Wheelchair accessible. There are some spots with uneven pavement so be careful.

Keara J.

Yelp
Love this place. The minute I pulled up. My heart dropped. I was so amazed of this little spot not to far from the Baltimore Harbor. There are really talented creations here I would recommend going on a weekday where it isn't to crowded. This is a good place for pictures. The only thing I didn't like is that it was so small. Don't get me wrong you see a lot but I was expecting it to be more. I drove one hour for this place and I do feel it was worth it.

Yelp
Graffiti Alley is a very unique spot. It is one of the few cities where they have a space to celebrate the city's graffiti artists and art. I enjoyed it a lot. Will for sure be back. It is a must see in my view if you are in Baltimore.
google avatar

Keli W.

Yelp
Awesome place to go for a photo shoot! I went on an early afternoon on a weekday. There were a lot of other people there doing photo shoots too, but everyone was nice. The cool thing is everytime you go it is different.
google avatar

Edwina A.

Yelp
Awesome place! Full of talented black artist, WARNING: please don't come here if you're not comfortable around black people. A lot of the reviews say it's sketchy but the reality is it's surrounded by an underprivileged black community. No one is going to assault or rob you. Leave your racial prejudice at home!
google avatar

Terelyne A.

Yelp
This is really a cool spot especially for picture taking or selfies....I'm definitely coming back during the warm weather. I normally go to my friend's instagram for ideas of places to go....definitely one of the cool places on top of my list
google avatar

Yelp
Tucked away in an L-shaped alley between North Avenue and Howard Street in Baltimore is an oasis of color. Bleak, disheveled buildings mask the hidden paintings of a unique culture of artists: graffiti artists. Graffiti Alley in Midtown pays homage to an art form often seen as vandalism. Between the brick buildings you will find graffiti artists spraying the alley with a fresh coat of paint. They refer to themselves as writers, and the walls of the alley are their canvas where they can experiment and develop their style without fear of punishment.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
Really cool spot a short drive North of downtown. There is artwork all over the walls and ground, so you are sure to score lots of great photos. It was quiet and peaceful on the Sunday afternoon we stopped in, but a few others were milling about, including a pro photographer. There is a large parking lot next door and a Popeyes across the street for you to drop your car. Quirky. Out of the way. All the hallmarks of a hidden gem. Don't miss it.

Simmons F.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for local art, so this was a pleasure to see. Lots to look at. Right in the heart of the city. Great for a photo op because the art is constantly changing. Everything is so vivid and the artists that come here are very talented. I believe this area is the outside of an art and photography studio. Must see if you love graf.

Bailey H.

Yelp
Unique spot!! I went on a trip last year with my club and it was a must see place to go. Not only for pictures but to appreciate the art that is there... it's also free which is great lol!
google avatar

Jeff O.

Yelp
yeah whatever, it's cool but not anything spectacular. WTF, am I jaded??? What's up with me being so blase lately?? I mean, it's no 5 pointz, no mecca of anything. It's an alley way with a bunch of pretty good graffiti in it. I passed by it in the car so I stopped, admired, took a picture and left. Nothing to aim for as a traveler, but cool to happen upon.

Yelp
AWESOME photo backdrop - so fun and pretty. Worth the stop. Located in an L-shaped alley between North Avenue and Howard Street
