My boyfriend and I moved across the country to Flagstaff and needed a place to stay until our new apartment was ready to move into that wasn't super expensive, thus we came here (a sad mistake considering for even less money we ended up at the Rodeway Inn- which was so much better. will write a 5 star review for Sonia there after I write this one). Anyway, our first couple nights were fine. On our third day this blonde front desk kid with a pedostache (who had been rude from day one) had told me my credit card was not valid. We had been paying cash for our stay, but most hotels (again, hotels, not hostels but whatever) have you keep a card on file for their protection in case you damage something etc. (Although not Rodeway Inn, they take a $50 refundable cash deposit if you don't want a card on file, another perk). My debit card was empty because I had PNC at the time and that does not exist in the West and I was in the process of opening a new card with a bank that is in this state and just was paying for things in cash. Regardless, though empty, it still was working, and nothing should have been charged to it considering it was on file for security reasons. I was told my card was run and they decided it was not "valid" (not even sure what that means) and received no explanation. I was confused as to why it had not been a problem the other two days and suddenly was. I was then told unless I had a new card or fixed the problem we would need to leave the next morning (a huge huge problem considering we had nearly everything we owned in the room and had planned to be there until moving and it was Thursday so many of the hotels in the area had been booked through the weekend. I couldn't deposit cash into my PNC card since it doesn't exist here, and the front desk kid was also unable to give me an exact amount I had to deposit in order to be consider "valid". I even spent several hours at BoA to open an account there, but they don't do cards day of (like every other bank). I offered to get a prepaid debit card or leave a cash deposit but was told that wasn't acceptable either.
The next morning, at 10am we received a loud knock on our door and a cranky British woman told us we had to leave because "though they had been more lenient lately, they actually had a 4 night policy they had to enforce". We had one hour to pack up and leave. She said nothing about my card. I found nothing on their website about this (and again had spoken to the front desk about our length of stay and none of them said anything/were aware) and in fact spoke to other guests who had been there for much longer, and were not getting told to leave I might add. Exactly an hour later as I'm packing this woman comes back to tell me I need to be out in two minutes. I apologized for "taking so long" as she said, but explained that we were not expecting to leave that days and she responds with "yes, that's why I woke you up early so you could pack". Her demeanor was incredibly rude and I had to end up leaving some items behind due to her insistence on us leaving immediately. On our way out she yells down the hall for us to leave the keys on the front desk.
I asked about the $1 per day storage they have offered on their website, (which I also spoke to a front desk worker about the day I arrived) and the rude lady told me they no longer offer that... After just storing some other women's bags :-)
That day I spent 7 hours in an Amtrak station with all of my items (on my husband's 21st birthday!) trying to figure out where to go for the time being.
I understand their card "policy" (I use this term loosely because their policies only apply when they want them to) but again, this was not initially a problem and I was never explained why it became one. ALSO, as I said, the woman didn't even mention that my card had any relevance to us being told to leave, she used this made up 4 night "policy" as an excuse. She wouldn't even let us sit in the front while we figured out what to do! Again, had we done something wrong I completely understand but we were great guests and were even communicating with the owner, Lisa, about a workstay program and then poof... we were told to leave. I really would love to know the true reasoning behind this because I feel incredibly unfairly treated and every single thing I was told was proved untrue by observing other guests/how they "enforced these -made up- policies". Go to Rodeway Inn. We paid $50 for a private room at the hostel to share bathrooms/kitchens and be treated poorly. At Rodeway Inn for $50 you have a private room and bathroom, a cable TV, fridge, microwave, ya know usual hotel amenities and it's right down the road from the hostel.
