All aboard! Grand Central in La Plaza in Palm Springs looks like the waystation to another destination. Like maybe a train depot or a rail car. This is set in a former department store, Desmond's, which was designed in 1936, so perhaps that's why it has an Art Deco or Moderne ambience. I did enjoy the touches of cobalt blue throughout, which is pretty and striking.
We stopped in for an early breakfast and we were the only customers. I ordered the huevos rancheros after deciding the chilaquiles were probably too spicy for me. My dish was good, I was glad that the refried black beans were a light layer and the dish was just right, not too spicy, although a little more soupy that I was expecting. The flavor was great. My friend had Brad's Breakfast, with fried eggs and bacon, potatoes and fruit. We split a cinnamon bun with cream cheese topping. It was warm, pleasantly crisp around the edges, maybe a little dry, with a nice topping, not too sweet.
I don't know why there weren't more customers, because other restaurants around the plaza were bustling. Perhaps their clientele come in the evening instead because the atmosphere seems more suited to cocktails and dinner.
We're on board with that.
