"This low-key cocktail bar that opened in 2017 recently tacked on a menu full of pastas and seafood dishes from a Fiola Mare alum. A vintage jukebox, comfy couch, and candle-lit fireplace pay homage to the space’s former life as a row house. Its Negroni continues to be a top seller." - Missy Frederick, Eater Staff

"Grand Duchess, the low-key Adams Morgan cocktail bar that opened in 2017 with cheap Old Fashioneds and a short list of grilled cheese sandwiches, is now a bonafide restaurant serving pastas and seafood dishes from a Fiola Mare alum. Chef Enoc Lopez, who also served as head chef at Martin’s Tavern in Georgetown, joined the team last year and was preparing to roll out a full menu before the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the bar adapted to restrictions triggered by the public health crisis by hosting a takeout hoagie pop-up with assistance from Lucky Buns owner Alex McCoy. “We always wanted to round out the experience with great food, and it’s been a long, wild ride to get to this point,” co-owner Vinnie Rotondaro says. “It’s been a brutal year but we made it through and the team is intact.” Starting this month, Lopez began sending out creamy chicken rigatoni, shrimp scampi, and pan seared gnocchi with nut-free pesto. A pair of plump crab cakes — a hot commodity disappearing on D.C. menus this summer amidst soaring prices — are also on board ($24). “It’s definitely a fan favorite around here so he wanted to put it on,” Rotondaro says. The co-owner sums up the menu as “eclectic” American. Creative starters include a Philly cheesesteak empanada stuffed with shaved ribeye, ‘whiz, and masa. Matzo-breaded chicken tenders come with a hot honey mustard. The bar will slowly roll out steaks, too, like a New York strip served with truffled fingerling potatoes and olive tapenade.Desserts include a cannoli and mini cheesecake tower. “In the end [Lopez] is not trying to do something big and fancy,” the owner says, “He has a great ability to take something simple and make it flavorful. It fits right into what is cool about the Grand Duchess — it makes you feel at home.” Partners Rotondaro and Rory Adair pay homage to the space’s former life as a row house that dates back to 1890 with decor like a powder blue couch, candle-filled fireplace, vintage jukebox, and bookshelves near a bay window. Before Grand Duchess, it was Pharmacy Bar — a cult cocktail spot that closed in 2014 — and the owners converted one of its pill-encased tabletops into wall art. “Me and Rory are the classic two dudes who wanted to open a bar on a budget,” he says. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We love amaro, and that is going to vibe a lot more with the food.” Longtime hits like a Negroni and combos of Narragansett and Old Overholt Rye join new additions like a frozen Miami Vice — a swirl of pina colada and strawberry daiquiri. “It’s brutally hot right now and that hits the spot,” Rotondaro says. The bar took a hiatus soon after opening to tend to an occupancy issue: There was only one bathroom on site, which meant only 15 patrons were legally allowed inside the 1,200-square-foot space at any given time. Now there’s a second toilet and room for 48 people. One perk of the pandemic was capitalizing on a winterization grant with a new 14-seat patio out front. Grand Duchess is open Wednesday through Sunday, 5 p.m. to midnight (and later on weekends), with a kitchen closing at 11 p.m. during the week." - Tierney Plumb

"Adams Morgan cocktail bar Grand Duchess, which quickly became known for its $7 Old Fashioneds and $5 grilled cheeses upon opening last year, had to take a hiatus this summer to tend to an occupancy issue: There was only one bathroom on site, which meant only 15 patrons were legally allowed inside the 1,200-square-foot space at any given time. With a second toilet now in place, 48 people are free to eat and drink (and pee) at the dimly-lit cocktail den, scheduled to reopen Wednesday, September 19 at 4 p.m. First-time bar owners Vinnie Rotondaro and Rory Adair tell Eater its best-selling cheap eats and drinks are making a comeback, along with more cocktails and food in the mix this time around." - Tierney Plumb

Yelp
I was so excited to try this new bar when I first saw the diamond in the window! Came here for a weeknight happy hour and was able to find seating at the bar. Rory was an awesome bartender who mixes up delicious cocktails. He made the perfect old fashioned. The music is wonderful since they were playing 70's rock at a reasonable enough volume that you can actually talk to the person you came with. They spin vinyl on occasions too, so I'll definitely be back for that. My only recommendation for management is to make the neon diamond sign a softer yellow light since it puts a bit of a flourescent glow into the best seat in the house (the window overlooking Admo) and detracts from the cozy vibe you've setup.

Yelp
Very pretty interior. When my group went in, The Joy of Painting was playing on the projector. Service was prompt. I got the mezcal drink and brussels sprouts. It was good, not outstanding. The options for larger bites were pretty limited, hence I ended up eating a large plate of brussels sprouts but it was overall a good experience.

Yelp
Chicken tenders were dry. Definitely more of a drink spot, but wish the beer ir ordered was on tap. Unique vibe

Yelp
Love this place! Inside has a dive bar vibe but the cocktails they're serving up are top notch. Joaquin's Negroni is my go-to, but the other cocktails I've tried on the menu have all been stellar. To top it off, the bartenders are super nice and attentive. I haven't tried the food yet, but am definitely going to try some next time!

Yelp
really fun bar/restaurant! it's an upscale dive bar, mostly focuses on drinks and cocktails, but also has great food/snack bites, and the service is really great. they have a happy hour every day starting at 5, when they open, and it's rotating drinks so ask the server. on sunday when i went there were deals on beer and seltzers. they have a pretty big food menu, especially for a cocktail bar. i got the old bay fries for a snack and really liked them ($10 for them but honestly it was a large basket of them). most wine was $10+, beer around $7, and cocktails were a solid $14+ so pretty average for the city if not on the cheaper side. the interior is really pretty, we say in front of a huge open window so the vibes were great. they also have outdoor seating; it was be a good spot to go with friends. our server was also super lovely! i highly recommend!

Yelp
Visited as a result of the Guide to Imbibe. When it was presented, I was provided a lower level of service than when I was originally greeted. I ordered a frozen Pina Colada for my friend and I. The drinks were great. The bar was dive-like.

Yelp
$8 Old Fashioned's were a hit! Great atmosphere and really good music. There are lots of seating options: bar, booths, tables and patio. We definitely will be back to try the other drinks and take in the vibes!

Yelp
Love love love!!! There old fashioned drinks had me at hello! Packing a punch! Bartender was also mixing down some other drinks I love with such care and attentiveness. The environment was welcoming and had seats inside and also outside. They have a selection of bites and different little entrees but I guess I'll be indulging in those my next visit..

Yelp
Subpar service. Definitely a dive bar. Dive bar ambiance. I ordered the meatball rigatoni and the sauce tasted like it was 3 days old, meatballs like they were reheated in a microwave and not all the way through, and pasta was fine. My fiancée had the creamy chicken rigatoni. That tasted a lot fresher and the whole dish was uniformly hot. I'd come here for a drink but I'd say pass on the food. If I don't get food poisoning I will count it as a win.

Scott M.

Yelp
Bartender took away our 2 drinks despite being a group of 4 over 21 year olds solely because one of us has a voided ID since they just moved. 2 IDs were presented to get the 2 drinks and the person with the voided ID had no drink

Colton S.

Yelp
The grand duchess is one of the more self-aware bars I've experienced. The music, the menu, the whole vibe is on point. We stopped here for some cocktails and snacks before our dinner reservation and immediately fell in love with the charm of this place. Sit here for hours with your dudes for a long night of laughter and conversation or cuddle up with your lady in one of the awesome corner booths.

Yelp
This place f*cking rules in every way possible. Drinks=100 Food=100 Service=100 Ambiance=100 Vibes=100

Yelp
Really great food! Great service too. Found a new favorite place. Great spot to hang out.

Julia L.

Yelp
outside there is a sign that says "bad vibes, bad music, and ugly bartenders" they meant it to be ironic, but they unfortunately lived up to their sign. rude service 40$ for two tecates and two shots of vodka, bad rock playing and it smells like mold.

Yelp
Came here with a coworker after work and loved everything about this place. The mules were $5 and were a great unique take on them. I also had a specialty cocktail, which was delicious! One of the best I've had in DC! The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable. The music playing from the record was great as well! My coworker ordered a grilled cheese with mozzarella, tomato, and lettuce. He declared it was the best panini he has ever had lol NOTE: A little intimate for coworker time, would more recommend for a date night.

Yelp
This place has a great outdoor set up. Four tables out front, each with their own heater. Service is so fast and prompt, they know their stuff. Drinks are priced in line with what you'd see elsewhere $6-9 for a beer, $12 for cocktails. 5/5 recommend.

Yelp
This new bar in Adams Morgan is a gem of a find. It has an eclectic feel; it almost feels like you're walking into a hole in the wall in New York (except much quieter and cleaner) . There's a small bar at the end of a spacious room that's decorated with art pieces. The drink and food menu had just a few options but all are incredibly delicious. I had the Summer Breeze which was crisp and refreshing and an afrogato (sp?) which is a shot of espresso over vanilla ice cream (both pictured) . Never had it before and it was SO good. I highly recommend you try out this bar. I also found out they have movie nights (classic corny horror films this month).

Yelp
The Grand Duchess has quickly become one of my favorite spots in Adams Morgan. It's a cute and quirky little bar offering its patrons a nice break from whatever is happening in 18th street on a typical Friday or Saturday night. The service, drinks, and atmosphere are all great. They have a good selection of cocktails starting at ~$10. I always appreciate the music selection and my friends and I have never had an issue finding a table or booth to sit at. Overall, the Grand Duchess is a breath of fresh air in a sea of bars with five dollar fireball shots and sticky floors. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Probably my favorite new bar in Adams Morgan. This spot used to be Pharmacy Bar back in the day, kind of the eye of the hurricane to crazy Adams Morgan nightlife, and Grand Duchess preserves a lot of that charm. It's a laid back spot with a friendly bartender and tasty cocktails. They also specialize in Amaro, the Italian liqueur made with lots of herbs. You can get a flight or the draft Amaro Montenegro. It's a fun way to try a new booze, and with all the herbs it seems also healthy. The interior is cozy and mellow and there are lots of places to hang out and talk with friends. They even have a vintage jukebox (that was one of Pharmacy's draws too.) Worth a visit.

Yelp
Cool spot that has happy hour to 8 pm that includes old fashions as well as a beer and a shot of bourbon. Our bartender Jake was very knowledgeable and friendly. He picked a bourbon that was very smooth to go with my Nantucket beer. The space is warm and inviting in a hip area. The perfect spot if you want something low key during the week or a lively bar during the weekend. A lot of cool shops in the neighborhood to check out either before or after a few drinks.

Yelp
This is a great new spot in Adams Morgan! Incredibly friendly bartenders and really well crafted drinks. I ordered the "Cinnamon Girl" which was divine. I am a sucker for egg white on a cocktail I like the vibe inside here. Low lighting and dark wood make this bar unique, and set it apart from other bars in Adams Morgan. A friend ordered the Old Fashioned ($5 during happy hour), which was as excellent as they come! Check this place out for a great cocktail and good bar snacks. You can tell the owners and bartenders have a passion for what they do and it shows.

Yelp
The drinks were good! But I'm here to write about the really unpleasant bartender . Last night, my husband and I were exploring our new neighborhood. We stopped in and the vibe was great. However, there were two bartenders behind the bar. One was kind, and the other one was simply awful. We witness her disparage a patron to the other bartender. She was short and rude to everyone who ordered a drink. And what really pushed me over the edge was when a man who asked a question out of kindness and curiosity about how she decides when to use the julep spoon or strainer, her response was disgustingly rude (I literally have no reason) She didn't smile or try to answer and said it as she was walking away. This is a neighborhood bar. People come back for the community. I won't come back.

Yelp
cheating on the tipping process. And the food is too salty; besides there r so so so many mosquitoes.

Cora S.

Yelp
Boy do I love this place. Sure it's a bit awkward when you enter and you don't quite know where to sit or who to talk to in order to grab a seat but just make a beeline to the bar. The happy hour runs until 8:00 which is rare in DC and the bartender Jake, is such a gentleman. He makes meannnn drinks and even indulged me when I asked to make my old fashioned extra strong. You owe it to yourself to try this bar out. It's new but I hope it sticks around for a while.

Michael R.

Yelp
I really love this bar. The bartender was warm and friendly, and the drinks were well-priced and strong. Oh, and the happy hour can't be beat: it lasts until 8 and the old fashioneds are only $5. I also really love the vibe here, lowkey and dimly lit. This is a great place for a date, or any other situation where you just want to have a good drink and actually hear a conversation.

Amanda H.

Yelp
This is a great spot. Delicious drinks, chill atmosphere and I cannot accurately describe how amazingly cool the people who run the place are. I highly recommend. Seriously go - you will not be disappointed.

Elysa L.

Yelp
Really fun spot to grab a drink! Awesome beer list, fun atmosphere. Still new enough that you dont have to worry about massive crowds on the weekend

Samantha J.

Yelp
Favorite new bar in DC. Awesome vibe and staff. The amaro is great, too. Love the decor and vibe, a haven set apart from the rest of 18th street in Adam's Morgan. The owner is v friendly and also owns a bar called "Boobytrap" in Bushwick, Brooklyn so check that out if you're up there.

Glinda G.

Yelp
Finally a hip craft cocktail bar in Adams Morgan! Very cool friendly bartender with a big beard! He had the look and the personality. Great happy hour with $5 Old Fashioneds! I also had a delicious gin cocktail and a mezcal negroni like drink. They have a limited menu of grilled cheeses. Nice decor but they say they are remodeling soon since right now they are just a pop up! Definitely recommended if you are particular about your cocktails and want a place to have a quiet chat in Adams Morgan which isn't always easy to find!

Steven H.

Yelp
Great cocktails and vibe here. Was disappointed there was no happy hour on Saturday even though the website clearly mentioned there was.

Don H.

Yelp
This is the bar that I would design if I were a bar designer. It's cool, a little funky. Great drinks and great atmosphere. Great people on both sides of the bar. Great amaro collection. And they have two bathrooms now; apparently that's a thing.

Dan K.

Yelp
Awesome happy hour. Really tasty drinks. Spot on boulevardier and old fashioned. The cheddar mustard grilled cheese is amazing.

Carla C.

Yelp
One of the best cocktails I have tried in DC. Thus, I was so happy when I saw that they do Italian typical drinks. This sandwiches are yummy and the ambience is just perfect. Nice decoration, good prices, and wonderful staff.

Munir D.

Yelp
Hidden gem right off 18th street. A bartenders drinks with great service! Seriously, just wait till renovations are completed... Actually don't, this is my spot. You can sip an old fashioned and gaze at the Washington Monument or watch the sunset or both, from the patio. Rory is cool dude. Happy Hour till 8pm is irresponsible yet a dream come true. Thanks!!!

Miriam A.

Yelp
Love this bar on 18th st! Such a chill vibe, great bartender, and ambiance. Love that they have multiple bathrooms these days.

Chris S.

Yelp
All around great experience! The staff is attentive and they make great drinks and grilled cheese, etc! I had a cocktail called House In The Woods because I love bourbon and the bartender made this stellar drink. One of the co owners personally made me a grilled cheese called the Jackie that blew my mind with a flavor combination of simple but effective ingredients. Ask about the cool stuff hanging on the walls because it seems that everything has a good story behind it. Walk in or have your private party here and check out their movie nights on a projector! I'll definitely be back

Christian S.

Yelp
Bar perfection. Beer, cocktails, olives; there's nothing a true bar patron could want that the Grand Duchess can't deliver.

Tiffani S.

Yelp
Glad to see it's finally reopened after the renovation! It looks a lot less dive-y than it used to, the bar is longer and facing the windows now. The cocktails aren't cheap, but it's DC, drinks aren't cheap anywhere. The wines and beers are pretty reasonable. I'm happy it's back in the neighborhood.

RoseAnn R.

Yelp
Awesome place reminiscent of the T.V. series, "Cheers!" Great atmosphere. Their brussels sprouts and grilled cheese bring these staples to another level

Jessica A.

Yelp
This new addition to Adams Morgan combines the remember-your-name quality of your favorite neighborhood bar with a high end, customized-cocktail bar. The management and staff of this bar blew us away with the level of their service and attention to detail. It has been a long time since I've had as high quality an experience as Grand Duchess. Jake was extremely creative in making cocktails suited to every member of our group's taste, and had a great sense of humor to boot. Make sure to check out this place - especially their selection of late night grilled cheeses - you won't be disappointed!
