The Best Ski Resorts in Europe for an Under-the-Radar Getaway | Vogue

"Tucked within the Pindus mountains atop a private peak, this wellness getaway is where you go when a mental reset is in order. The surrounding peaks set a majestic tone, and the quintessential village of Metsovo (with its aforementioned ski slopes) is just a short drive from the property. The hotel is surrounded by extensive black pine forests and wildlife sightings like Eurasian brown bears, wolves, and Balkan chamois are all possible. Interiors are awash in soothing neutrals and natural textures, and the wellness program takes inspiration from the Aspen tree. Spa guests can swim in the indoor heated pool with panoramic views, or indulge in a treatment like the mountain scrub that uses herbs from Metsovo." - Chadner Navarro, Nicole Kliest

Retreating Into the Remote Stone Villages of Northwest Greece

"I leave Papingo at dawn and drive a few hours southeast to the Grand Forest Metsovo. Built in the traditional style of the area, with flat wooden roofs and vaulted ceilings, the resort sits nestled in the mountains with a view of Metsovo village. “This is a mountain with a hotel, not the other way around,” says owner Ellie Barmpagiannis as we sit before the lobby's roaring fireplace."

Grand Forest Metsovo (Metsovo, Epirus) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Pindus Mountains of the Greek mainland are far less heavily traveled than the islands and the coast, but a hotel like Grand Forest Metsovo makes a strong case for a landlocked itinerary. It’s family-owned and operated, though more substantial than that might imply. And it’s plenty luxurious as well, the better to contrast with the rugged pleasures of the mountains. Metsovo 1350m, the restaurant, is named for the local elevation, and serves high-end modern Greek fare with far-ranging mountain views; the spa, Aspen Wellness, overlooks the landscape from a similarly dramatic perspective." - Tablet Hotels

It's expensive, but every penny is worth it! The location is (as they say) breathtaking. The hotel is in a national park and you see all the mountains around you. If you like sports, there are plenty of options. You can run, walk, hike around in the forest, and see nature on the way (both plants and mushrooms and wild animals). You can also ride horses and bike. If the weather is bad, there is a gym and 2 swimming pools (one outdoors one indoors). If you like being pampered, there is a spa with a wonderful hot tub and a good range of treatments, or you can just sit by the big fireplace in the lobby and get some lovely cocktails. The restaurant has a fairly broad menu and every dish is absolutely fantastic. My favourite was the gnocchi with eel, but the typical mezzovone cheese baked in kadaifi is also a must. Every single person in the staff is absolutely amazing. Not just kind and helpful as you would expect, but also friendly exactly to the right level and genuinely nice.

An Absolutely Outstanding Stay at Grand Forest Metsovo From the moment we arrived as a family with two young children for what was supposed to be a two-night stay, we were completely captivated by this amazing and beautiful place. We immediately decided to extend our stay by another night — and if we could, we would have gladly stayed even longer! The rooms are stunning, and the service is truly at a six-star level from every single staff member. Dinner was like dining at a fine gourmet restaurant, with exceptional food and presentation. I would especially like to mention our waiter, Alexander, who provided outstanding service. He was incredibly kind and made us feel welcome, even with our little ones who can sometimes be noisy — his warmth and professionalism truly enhanced our dining experience. Breakfast was excellent, and the spa facilities and pool were wonderful. Although the hotel is fairly large, it feels very boutique — private, serene, and secluded, yet still close to the charming village of Metsovo. There is also a spacious and well-equipped playroom for children, which was a great bonus for our family. I left feeling a true sense of peace and tranquility — it was the perfect ending to our beautiful trip in Greece. I will recommend this hotel to everyone, and I am certain I will return. This is without a doubt a hotel of the highest standard.

Stayed here for one night with family recommendations. Booked a room with full mountain view. At first look, the room was okay (even thought not worth the price, that's a personal opinion). Hurried to get some dinner at the restaurant which was more of a gourmet dinner rather than delicious, full meals as we expected. Then we headed to the spa, and I absolutely loved the hot water swimming pool. When I went into the shower, I noticed that it was not clean, there was pubic hair stuck/dried in the wall and there was mold everywhere! Yes yes! I was shocked and at first I thought it was the tiles' design, but no, it was mold and pubic hair! The check out was at 12, which was okay, but you could not use the pool and the jacuzzi (or by private appointment only). In the check out, I showed the clear videos of the dirty bathroom to the reception desk, but they acted surprised as if this was something unbelievable and apologised with a half voice and a forced smile, and immediately after we moved 2 metres away from the front desk, they started talking to each other. Could tell from their faces that they were judging us. So for us, it was a waste of time, and we paid 210€/night only to see someone else's pubic hair stuck on the wall! And if the hotel has some kind of disbelief, I have some long and clear videos of the toilet/room. Bye!

Appalling experience. On arrival to check into our family room, reception staff decided our daughter was “too big” despite her still being a child and insisted we upgrade to a larger room at an extra €250 per night, which also wouldn’t be ready until 8pm. We explained we were unhappy, confused by the comment about our daughter, and unwilling to pay more or wait when staying only one night. The hotel then refused to refund us. After lengthy but calm discussions, they reluctantly refunded the booking. After 5 hours of travel to specifically stay here, we were left with two crying children and are now facing another 4-hour drive to reach our Christmas destination.

Positive points:
The location and the view are amazing. The spa was okay and relaxing. The cleaning staff came every day. The beef burger was very tasty. The rooms were warm and had heating. The tv in the room has Netflix. There is also a nice area in the hotel called the Pines Bar, where guests can relax by the fireplace, play games, and order tea or food. It is a cozy place to spend time. However, guests are expected to light the fireplace themselves. When we asked for proper fire starters, we were told they could not be provided for safety reasons, which felt contradictory, as guests end up using paper or whatever is available to light the fire. Some members of the breakfast staff were very polite and helpful, which we appreciated. Negative points:
The overall condition of the hotel and the room was very poor and does not justify a 5-star rating. The property is in serious need of renovation. The bed was extremely uncomfortable — for three nights we woke up stiff and in pain, as the mattress literally had a dip in the middle and it was super bad quality. There was a strange smell in the room, and despite requesting a room change more than three times due to the odor, we were never moved. And they never showed any interest. Only the first time we complained they send the cleaner and put aromatic spray , it was funny . Eventually, we accepted it, assuming the other rooms would not have been any better. The bathroom sink did not drain properly. The rooms had no soundproofing at all, so we could hear everything from neighboring rooms and the hallway. Also how is it possible that in this location, in this hotel, there are some rooms without a fireplace? The breakfast was acceptable but nothing special or memorable. As minor points, we noticed a blonde hair in the butter on one occasion, and the club sandwich from the lobby was unusually heavy on garlic, which may not suit everyone. One blonde lady at the reception was particularly rude and unfriendly. Considering that the hotel claims to be 5-star, we feel that it does not meet that standard. If it were not presented as 5-star, we would have rated it 4 stars instead of 3.

When my grown daughter and I waled into the lobby of the Grand Forest Metsovo, our collective breath was taken away. My daughter compared it to a resort she had stayed at in Bhutan, where the magical, misty mountains overwhelmed her on a past voyage. The staff was attractive, attentive, an kind. The rooms and beds were perfection. And the way the hotel rooms were built into the hillside was inspiring. Understanding access to them takes practice, however, walking through some exterior ocrridors and taking more than one elevator. Ask for someone to teach you or you'll get lost! ||I had a lovely massage and my daughter enjoyed a facial during our stay, the purpose of which was to be close to the Meteora monasteries. We accessed the hotel by rental car up a windy road, so I can't attest for it when snow and ice arrive. And even though we did have some inclement weather at the tail end of Septamber, it only made th experience more dramatic. I higly recommend this resort!

Our stay at Grand Forest Metsovo was exceptional in every sense. Nestled among the pines with sweeping mountain views, the hotel offers tranquility, elegance, and genuine hospitality. Special thanks to Tolis, whose warmth and personal touch made us feel truly at home, and to Michalis at reception, who ensured every detail of our stay was seamless. A rare combination of luxury, comfort, and heartfelt service — highly recommended.

The place is absolutely beautiful, calm, and has such a different vibe. It’s the perfect balance between relaxation and real adrenaline-filled activities—truly wow, mashallah. We tried horseback riding in the mountains, and it was such an amazing experience! The guide who took us on the tour with the horses was very kind. The activities offered by the hotel are diverse and fantastic, and it’s best to book them a day in advance. The reception staff were also incredibly welcoming—you truly feel like you’re among family. They were so kind and cheerful, and even the hotel guests felt like people you already know. You never feel like a stranger—everyone smiles, greets you in the morning, and even says goodbye when you leave. 🥹 And the restaurant—oh, the food was delicious, delicious, delicious! Especially the slow-cooked meat dish, I don’t even know how I’ll get over that taste. Their breakfast was also tasty and varied. The people there, from the staff to the guests, were all so kind, warm, and wonderful. But the most heartwarming part was someone named Trollis. Honestly, it felt like saying goodbye to a grandfather. He’s such a genuinely kind person, with great manners, always welcoming the guests, asking questions, suggesting activities, introducing the hotel, showing you around, and greeting you warmly whenever he saw you. His presence was so comforting. When we left, he gave us such a heartfelt farewell. Truly, if I talked from now until tomorrow, I wouldn’t do him justice.
