Grand Hôtel du Lion d'Or

"The Grand Hôtel du Lion d'Or is a gastronomic landmark of Sologne and owes its reputation to Marie-Christine and Didier Clément, a couple of professionals who are passionate about food. A true scholar when it comes to his region, the chef has spent his career resurrecting forgotten herbs and spices: grains of paradise, sand leek, angelica and lemon thyme, as well as vegetables such as parsnips or the vitelotte potato. He combines experience and curiosity, cooking in a classical vein, without affectation and his jus and sauces are particularly succulent. Take for example his Babylon-style pigeon, stuffed between the skin and flesh, now a signature dish of the house. Let’s not forget the knockout wine list which shines the spotlight on the Loire’s top wineries." - Michelin Inspector

I like choosing Relais & Chateaux properties because of the 'whow' factor I often encounter. This is due to the property or total experience provided. A few days ago I have been to the Grand hotel du lion d'or in Romorantin-Lanthenay (FR) and would like to share my poor experience with you, as I’m a real fan of the brand and think your guests deserve better than this. But with this property (Grand hotel du lion d'or), the brand falls short on its promises and provides little or no value for money. The interior and public spaces is outdated, as well as the rooms. Public spaces were not even light up, it was just not welcoming at all. It's like going back in the eighties, and an in-depth refurbishment of the property is needed urgently. The airco in the room was noisy, and the room was not even cooled before my arrival (29C outside). I took an express breakfast at 19Euro, and what i received for this was a total shame (coffee, orange juice and 3 mini-pastries)… see the picture attached please. Service levels were fine however. In brief: this property falls short of basic requirements for a R&C franchisee, and this led to a very disappointing experience to me as a guest...unfortunately, especially considering the fact i paid 280Euro for this. An Ibis Styles would have provided a better guest experience, and this is the truth. ||Ps. Some advice for your online questionnaire: add the possibility for the respondent to tick ‘not applicable’. Ex. for room service… + the call center for bookings outside the opening hours is just not efficient.

Upon the arrival and from outside the hotel doesn’t generates a great impression, and even the reception area doesn’t pay justice to the efforts of the owners and staff. The rooms are great we had the 16 (fantastic with a balcony and a very nice setting of the furnitures) the 10 and 15. All you can need during your stay is present. As for the breakfast and dinner I can only say that we all where very pleased by the quality of the service (all the staff) and the food and the exceptional wine list.

Every aspect of our three day stay at Hotel Lion d’Or was stunning, the ambience, the elegant rooms and stylish atmosphere, the friendly ambience with professional attentive staff contributed to a wonderful experience. Didier Clement’s inspired and innovative culinary expertise using local products from the Sologne region created dinners that were particularly memorable and we are already planning our return stay. Excellent in every way!

The dinner my husband and I had here was exceptional, one of the best meals every eaten. The sea bass with truffle and mashed potatoes, as well as the roast pigeon breast exceeded our expectation. We had no idea the chef had had two Michelin stars, but had now chosen to only cook with local produce and so had “bowed out” of this programme. Friendly and informed staff made it a very memorable evening. ||I would highly recommend the restaurant.

We arrived at this hotel in the middle of the bustling town of Romorantin on a hot afternoon following a few hours drive. We were greeted warmly by the receptionist, who asked about our journey, arranged for the car to be parked, provided one of us with a mask as we’d left ours in the car and helped us up to our room with our luggage. We immediately got the impression that nothing would be too much trouble.||||Our room was comfortable, not huge but big enough. Wifi was good.||||We ate in the restaurant of the hotel which, as it was a warm summer’s evening, was served in the courtyard, which was calm, shady, pretty and relaxing.Service was efficient and friendly and the food was very good. ||||Amongst our dishes we chose pigeon, mmmm, apricot mIlles feuilles, very fresh and light, langoustines. All dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavor.||||Our one regret is that because it was summer we didn’t get the chance to enjoy the beautiful interior of this building - lovely restaurant, very comfortable lounge. We’ll have to come back in the winter !

The hotel is beautiful. Rooms are modern and well equipped - outstanding value for money. The reason there is no 5th star is that the staff (some) could be nicer and more active and the restaurant is way too expensive for what it is and where it is located. Yes the service is great but the food is not worth €70 for a main course.

At the end of July my wife and I booked "la route du bonheur" where you stay in different relais et chateaux of the region. Our journey started with 2 nights at the grand hotel du Lion d'Or. Although the hotel is charming (rooms very small though) and the seating is lovely in the garden, this was one of the most awful dinner experiences ever! I ordered the filet de boeuf (78 E) medium and the meat was dreadly overcooked. We were looking forward to the enjoy our meal at this place since the chef has 2 Michelin Stars..... ||We complained that evening as well as by the check out but we were not even offered an apology . This hotel does not belong into the category of a relais et chateaux!!

Appalling service from staff - could never find any! Lukewarm welcome. Outdated equipment. Appalling wifi. Ladies toilets were dirty. “Suite” was tiny - vastly overpriced

Yelp
Great little relais et chateaux. Very continent to stay there and visit the Loire valley and its chateaux. The staff is ver friendly and very well trained. We had a room with balcony. The hotel is an old house which was always been a hotel since the 17th century. Remorantin is a very small town, almost a village but is very cove ineptly located. If you go there at least spend one night at the restaurant. Fabulous food. Very pricey, not for the deal seekers.
