Grand Hôtel Roi René (Aix-en-Provence, French Riviera / Provence) 1 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Riviera can have the glitz and glamour. Aix-en-Provence is the place to go for a more reserved sort of elegance, and the Grand Hotel Roi René, right on the city-center boulevard of the same name, is a picture-perfect example. The MGallery hotel collection seems to specialize in contemporary updates of classic structures, and this low-rise building, wrapping around a courtyard patio and pool, provides plenty of raw material." - Tablet Hotels

Grand Hotel Roi Rene | Best places to stay in Provence |

"In a handsome 19th-century stone building, this homely boutique hotel is a comfortable and great-value base for couples or families sightseeing in Provence. Modern interiors done up in white, charcoal and purple are inviting, and the suntrap central garden courtyard – with its swimming pool and bar – is a lovely place to relax after sightseeing. It’s a 15-minute walk from the historic centre of Aix-en-Provence – close enough for attractions and restaurants, but far enough that you feel the benefit of staying in a peaceful residential quarter away from the noisy tourist hordes. For those self-driving around Provence, it also offers a secure (and rare) place to leave the car (although booking a space in advance is essential). Incredibly quiet. We stayed for 10 days, and got great sleep every night. Apple Maps and Google maps have the entrance on the wrong side of the building, so the first day had just a bit of trouble finding it. Super easy access to the old town - just across the street! Art galleries, museums, an English language bookstore, 10 minute walk to the heart of almost everything you want to see here. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. Can't say enough about Marvin and Lysa at the front desk. We came almost every day with a request, a question, or trying to make arrangements . They handled it all with grace and style. I would stay here again easily Sir Winston Churchill stayed here, as well. If driving, do make those arrangements in advance, there is a garage below the hotel, but it fills up fast. Does have electric charging available, but those go fast as well.||If I have any even slightly negative to post, it would only be that this hotel is popular with Americans, and while we were there, there were some mornings when it was busy. Not crowded, but definitely busy. But overall, a great place to make your base of operations!

This is a very nice hotel but a little corporate. The rooms are very nice, clean and have everything you could need including robes and slippers and an ironing board! Breakfast was very good and included in our room rate. I found the breakfast staff a bit flat and one lady a little brisk with me, could have ruined the visit. The pool is lovely but wasn’t staffed when we visited so we had to remove wet towels ourselves to sit on beds. Also no new towels easily available. The little niggles wouldn’t stop me staying here again. It’s a good location and a nice hotel. We only ate breakfast as lots of lovely restaurants nearby.

A well maintained and impressive hotel with all the modern amenities and close to the centre of town. The swimming pool is good when it is hot. Breakfast has a wide variety of choices and the room is bright and airy with outdoor seating too. Our rooms at the front of the hotel was clean and tidy with good blackout. Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room. There are plenty of places to sit if you are waiting for a taxi or transfer and the staff were very helpful too.

Having read quite a few negative reviews here about this Hotel, we were a bit apprehensive about staying here. We returned yesterday from a 4 night stay in Aix en Provence and had a really lovely stay at the Grant Hotel Roi René – we have absolutely nothing negative to report. The Hotel is very centrally located and is well maintained, every member of staff we met was very helpful and friendly, our room was clean and bed was comfortable, we had good AC and a good shower; breakfast was very good with lots of options; the pool and pool area is also very nice. We would have no hesitation in recommending this Hotel, as it ticked all the boxes for us.

Would recommend. Valet parking available, breakfast available at the restaurant downstairs. Location was convenient. Staff was very friendly and accommodating (held our bags upon arrival and departure). Nothing special about the rooms except for the terrace. I wouldn’t necessarily consider it to be luxury.

We enjoyed being able to easily walk from the hotel to Cours Mirabeau and throughout the "vieille ville". The staff was helpful and friendly, rooms were clean and comfortable, and the hotel restaurant provided a decent menu of well-prepared dishes. Very good breakfast buffet too. Nice pool deck for relaxed gathering, with the lobby opening up to it. A very pleasant stay.

This hotel has everything you could possibly need in a guestroom and hotel property, and everything works! Air conditioning, bathrobe and slippers, Nespresso machine, and a quiet pool area and restaurant. My only disappointment was that my guestroom had one small window while the photos on the website of the Classic Room show a lovely floor to ceiling window. Next time I will ask not to be placed on the third floor.

A very central handy location, nice warm swimming pool. We had a standard room as we were part of tour group which was a tad on the small side and if you’re from the UK, you will wish to bring your own tea bags! There is a kettle in the room and small fridge. There is a convenient store and fruit shop nearby which is also handy. The staff are very pleasant. The breakfast was very well presented with an excellent choice but you had to throw yourself at a waitress to get tea or coffee and they looked grumpy, stressed out and uninterested stomping around. The evening meal in the restaurant is something to avoid. We booked it as we were arriving in the evening and wanted convenience. It was a huge mistake. The menu is lacklustre and lazy. For example, a starter of ‘beetroot with smoked yoghurt’ which I had as it was a very limited menu with not much to thrill my appetite on it. I wouldn’t even give that to my partner at home! I can’t think what the American guests *of which there are many - think of chicken burgers and overall it was just not at all what one would expect. The wine list on the other hand may give you a heart attack with your Holiday! I ordered a glass of Chablis and wanted a large one, (admittedly doing hand movements to indicate a large one). The waiter decided to bring me a bottle - already open.(!) . I thought well “hey ho why not”. Until the bill came. 1 starter (if you can call it that), 2 Caesar salads and a bottle of wine came to about €129/€149 or thereabouts. I nearly passed out on the spot. The Chablis was €82. I thought this clearly can’t be correct as we are in France where they make wine! Not that the waiter suggested I look at the wine list or brought it back or even told me what he was bringing or gave me a choice. I can’t think for the waiter (he looked like a manager in fact), is so inexperienced he couldn’t tell the difference between someone asking for a large glass or a bottle !! I found it rather sharp. I checked the wine list the next day and saw that there were only two bottles of Chablis on the list, one at €62 and one at €82. I don’t think there’s a bottle of wine under €50 so be very careful. With such a lacklustre, lazy menu one would expect some reasonably priced bottles. I haven’t met many wine connoisseurs who drink expensive wine and chicken burgers at the same time! Someone else commented on the wine list being overpriced in other reviews. All they’ve got to do is put a couple of bottles @ €20/€25 with such a dreadful menu.

Yelp
The carpet is disgusting the general appearance is dirty The restaurant is good but limited and even our guide recommended we not eat there We couldn't get the light off in the closet and the door wouldn't close so it glared all night

Yelp
Very nice hotel near the center of Aix (about a 12 minute walk to the center restaurants) with extremely attentive and friendly front desk staff. Rooms are comfortable but a little small. Room bathrooms are extremely clean and have plenty of soap, shampoo, conditioner, other disposable items. Breakfast area is very nice, hotel has a beautiful patio area, and pool and lounge area is nice. Only detractors are the room prices, street noise can get loud, and hotel is older.

Yelp
I'm not sure how it gets much better than this. Awesome place, great staff, fabulous room, superb location, and the included breakfast buffet is among the best I've had anywhere. We were here for 3 nights as we were using Aix as our base for exploring and I wish we had stayed longer. Best hotel we had in over 2 weeks in Europe. Everything was walking distance and old town is so fun to explore. The room was a generous size and very comfortable. Parking is available in the underground garage at extra cost but it was so worth it to not have to fight for spaces. The lobby has multiple seating areas and is well appointed. And that breakfast? Wow. I never needed lunch on any of the days we spent in Aix! Highly recommended.

Yelp
We really loved this hotel! Great walkable location to all of the charming shops and cafes in Aix-en-Provence. Staff were very friendly and very accommodating of our late (after midnight) arrival. They valeted our car into the garage to make our checkin easier. Their underground garage turned out to be quite spacious, which was a nice bonus. Their breakfasts were spectacular and we literally couldn't wait to get down there every morning! Superb service and so many selections, it was tough not to overdo it. Even though our room wasn't huge, it was nicely laid out with plenty of places for storing suitcases so we were never cramped. Our outdoor balcony was perfect for enjoying the warm afternoons with a nice bottle of Provence Rosè.

Yelp
It's a tough life when your Company has a facility near Marseilles and they put you up to stay in Aix en Provence during your stay. The Hotel Roi Rene is also nicely located within the heart of Cézanne's home town, near to the Cours Mirabeau, and the business district. The rooms were nice and hanging out by the pool was even nicer. Hotel Service (room, breakfast, and parking) were also prompt, efficient, and well received. I'd be back here in a minute if offered another chance to travel back.

Yelp
For the room and pool area, it would be four stars. However the service was quite lacking. When we requested a taxi to the train station, one would think that the front desk might consider telling us that there was a train strike. In addition, they attempted to charge us for two days of breakfast (some 30e/person per day). When we disputed the charge, they kind of threw up their hands in the air as if to say, "What do you expect me to do?" We had to argue to get the charges refunded. Ridiculous experience. Why pay for a 4-star if you are only going to get 1-star quality of service?

Yelp
PRIME real estate and a great room. We got a room with a deck and it was the perfect weather. I didn't get to check out the pool but it looked fantastic. Turn down service and a free bottle of water. Breakfast spread was decent and service was great. Get there early though because the seating is limited.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful. The rooms are really nice, the beds are comfortable, and the service was first rate. My daughters loved the pool. The location is 2 blocks from the main street in Aix. And it's very easy to drive to. They offer to let you park your car yourself - don't do it. Their garage is so tight, there's no way you can do it yourself. Get the valet to do it (they're fast).

Yelp
A superb location while visiting Aix. The staff was very accommodating with every detail needed during our stay. The breakfast included in our rate was a perfect start to each day. The pool and court yard was a delightful space where one can unwind with an aperitif after a long day. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Loving our hotel here in Aix. It's in a perfect location just a quick walk from/to the hustle and bustle of the town center. The hotel has a modern decor and a lovely pool. Its really the quintessential boutique hotel. The morning breakfast is perfect and delicious. The best we've had so far. I will be back :)

Yelp
Pleasant hotel great for exploring Aix The hotel is just 5-10 minutes walk from the Cours Mirabeau which is the main business area in Aix. It is about the same distance from the Aix train station, which links you to Marseille. This makes it great if you just want to explore Aix and relax by the lovely pool area that the hotel has. This incidently has lots of loungers and is waiter attended. The rooms are spotlessly clean, though if you want a quiet and pleasant stay ask for a room which overlooks the pool and garden area. The hotel adds some nice touches by folding the bed sheets over each evening and placing a Callisson (a locally made sweet almond paste sweet) on your pillow. White fluffy towelling robes are also provided. The rooms are very comfortable but resemble most chains, so don't expect traditional Provencale style. The breakfast area includes a terrace which is by the pool so that you can make the most of lovely summer weather. Breakfast is buffet style, with lots of choice of either cooked (eggs, bacon) or continental style. The service was good but not at all friendly, Aix as a whole however did not seem to be a very friendly place (It makes up for that in beauty though). Bar, phone and food prices seemed very reasonable.
