These 7 Properties Will Make You Feel Like You're at the Grand Budapest Hotel

7 European Countries That Don't Use the Euro

"This Scandinavian beauty boasts one of the strongest and most stable economies in Europe. Sweden also happens to be the perfect country where you can watch one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the Northern Lights—or stay up all night under the midnight sun."

Grand Hôtel

"When in Stockholm, do as your peacocking predecessors might have done, and make a reservation at the opulent Grand Hôtel, opened in 1874; it's as fit for a Northern European Grand Tour as any palace wing, with a proper Nordic spa to boot. Of course, you can count on expeditious service—don't expect to sit around waiting for a room—and celeb-status extras, like silk robes and floral arrangements. Rooms are spacious in that special, old world way, with high ceilings and delicate crown moulding, but don't expect any fusty, floral-seized linens here: Duvets in cool shades of gray and navy, or sometimes a heady turmeric, prevail, endowing suites with a modern, but elegant feel. For a little extra elbow room, book a suite with an attached parlour, whose size can be customized to your exact needs (just note that you don't refer to these parquet-floored boîtes as merely 'small-' or 'medium-sized,' but rather, as 'grand' or 'grandiose.'). A must-do during your stay? The Nordic bathing experience: up here, saunas and cold showers are as much a daily rite as brushing your teeth (but way more glamorous). Sweat it out in the pine-scented sauna, then submerge yourself in the ice-cold pool—and repeat. For a little extra assistance in abating jet lag, add in the Nordic Detox treatment—you can't go wrong with a deep-tissue massage and heat wrap to help those sad, swollen limbs recover from a long flight."

Our Readers' Favorite Hotels in Scandinavia of 2023

"At the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, for example, which was voted No. 4 this year, you’ll find plush fabrics and wallpaper in florals and stripes. Over in Stockholm, the Grand Hôtel has been welcoming guests since 1874 and hosted the first Nobel Prize banquet in 1901. Now it draws epicureans with two restaurants from Swedish chef Mathias Dhalgren, one of which (Matbaren) is recognized with Michelin’s Bib Gourmand designation." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I tried their spa and Swedish massage a couple of times. The first time I had masseuse - Johanna- was fantastic! A pity she left, but I look forward to trying similar professional and capability. Elegant place and absolutely worth every minute. I can't wait to return after summer!

A beautiful property with excellent service and perfect location. We had a water facing room where you also saw City Hall and other historic sites. The bed and pillows were so comfy and the bathroom was large. We enjoyed the bar…ambiance, food and drinks. We also had a cocktail at the outdoor restaurant…great views and service. Hands down an amazing property.

Stayed at the hotel to celebrate my mother´s 89th birthday. I love everything about the hotel. As soon as you arrive you feel like a princess and you are so well taken care of that you never want to leave. The service level is outstanding as are the facilities of the hotel. Beautiful room with stunning views. My favourite hotel.

This was a great hotel in a perfect location to explore Stockholm. We enjoyed the scenery of the local area the friendliness of the staff, as well as they always willing to help. We wish we had stayed an extra day to take a little bit more advantage of the hotel as we were only there for three days. The hotel is beautiful and the staff was exceptional. We enjoyed having drinks in the bar at the end of the night, the staff was extremely friendly. Breakfast was always good although the eggs could’ve been a little bit warmer. If I were to come back to Stockholm, I would definitely stay here again. It wasn’t an inexpensive hotel but it was certainly worth what we paid.

Stayed for 3 nights on a May bank holiday. Had a beautiful room on the 6th floor overlooking the Royal Palace. Room amenities were excellent, great shower, comfortable soft bed, coffee machine and kettle. Breakfast was excellent too, great service. Had a drink at the stylish bar every day, tends to get very busy. All staff were excellent, especially the lady concierge who helped us booking the ferry to Vaxholm. Hotel is very central, great location to do the shopping, take a ferry, visit Gamla Stan. Thank you for looking after us, would love to return.

Google
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm. We've experienced many high-end hotels, but what truly sets this one apart is the staff. Anyone can build a beautiful hotel and fill it with luxury, but you can't buy a great team. Every single employee we encountered during our weeklong stay was welcoming, friendly, and professional. That level of service is what makes a hotel truly five stars in our eyes. Even when the weather wasn’t ideal, stepping into the hotel felt like entering a warm, relaxing haven where you’re always greeted with a smile.

My stay at the Grand Hôtel Stockholm was more than just a hotel experience—it was a memory I’ll treasure forever. From the moment I arrived, the service was unmatched. When there was an issue with my luggage, the staff handled it with such care and urgency, making sure I was comfortable and informed every step of the way.||The room itself was a dream. The bed was so comfortable I slept through the night and woke up feeling refreshed. The view of the harbor and the Royal Palace was stunning—like something out of a postcard.||I came to Stockholm to honor my late mother’s birthday and participate in a live international recording as a vocalist. The peaceful atmosphere of the hotel gave me the space to reflect, heal, and create new memories. Being able to wake up in such a beautiful setting, prepare for the recording, and return to that same peaceful room made the entire trip feel divine.||From the luxurious amenities to the personalized service, every detail made me feel cared for. I’m so grateful to have spent this time at the Grand Hôtel—thank you for helping me make it unforgettable.

Yelp
It was late in the day, and it felt like we've been walking for days... I had forgotten to make reservations, and we decided to step into the grand hotel to see if we could be seated for a late dinner. They were super gracious, and we were seated immediately. First and foremost, I'm here to dispel rumors of grabbing a burger is going to be less expensive than other meals... Here that's not the case. I did order a cheeseburger and a Coke because why not?! The cheeseburger was embarrassingly expensive, but I will say it was also damn delicious! We are so used to our burgers coming with different sides when we order them, I'm mostly it's fries. Here, there are no sides, and in fact because it was so late, I wasn't able to order any additional food, including the french fries. When I come back here again? Probably not. Yes, this is despite the fact that it was a tasty burger. I think with better planning I would've found something a little bit more to my liking.

Yelp
Love the cocktails here so much that I returned recently after my prior visit in 2019. My favorite birdie drink was still available, albeit the ingredients changed a bit. My partner enjoyed his "Elixir". Sitting at the bar was fun as we got to chat with the friendly bartenders. Do not miss this bar.

Yelp
We had a wonderful time at the Cadierbaren, which became our de facto living and dining room during our 4 day visit to Stockholm. Old school yet fun atmosphere, comfortable seating, with stunning views of the harbor. The food and drinks were terrific, but what really made it such a memorable experience was the outstanding staff. The maitre d/manager, Peter, took such exemplary care of us, remembering our food/drinks/seating preferences, and ensured that everyone was enjoying their time in the Cadierbaren. All his recommendations were spot on. We thoroughly enjoyed the truly exceptional wine list, which was just voted best hotel wine list in Europe. Excuse me while I pop open my 1874 Mouton Rothschild...

Yelp
Grand Libations Our Swedish friend insisted that we stop here first when exploring Stockholm. Lefteris was a joy to meet and the artisanal cocktails he suggested were some of the most beautifully presented creations I've ever seen. The caged bird cocktail is a work of art. The food was absolutely delicious. We had bleak roe tacos, the Cadier burger, a shrimp sandwich, a lobster dish, and burrata with artichokes and mushrooms. The waterside view with it's cityscape reflected below and the chic lounge setting make for a wonderful experience.

Yelp
This is my favorite place in Stockholm! I love just hanging out in the sofas and meeting up with friends. It is a great people watching place and even though I'm usually not star struck I did get very exited meeting Bill Clinton here! (I have seen Victoria Silvstedt and met Jody Foster in the door as well) This bar is relaxed and laid back with a beautiful finish You always get great service in the bar, I try to explore their drink menu but I found some favorites that I always return to. The Louisiana Snake bite and The grand old lady are my top choices. I love sitting by the big windows and watching the boats and the beautiful castle by the water. Their afternoon Tea is really nice and you can make it a sparkling one too if you like! For lunch I can highly recommend their fish and chips, the burger is really good too but the bleak roe is my absolute favorite! That dish is a little smaller tough so do not pick that on your hungriest day. The shrimp sandwich is American size but still give you a taste of Sweden, Toast Skagen is another good choice. Over all I dare to promise you a beautiful experience, don't miss this place.

Yelp
Afternoon Tea Review: I was very disappointed with afternoon tea here at The Grand Hotel! The Hotel itself is beautiful and worth popping into if you're visiting, but the afternoon tea could use some major improvements. For 450 Kr, or USD$50, this afternoon tea was not really great. 1) Everything was WAY too sweet, including the scones. The dessert in the glass container (see pic) tasted like strawberry jam with crumble sprinkled over it. It was so potently sweet I couldn't finish it. Scones shouldn't be sweet either! 2) No clotted cream or butter. I was given thick sour milk, whip cream, extremely sweet blueberry jam, and extremely sweet lemon curd. You need clotted cream (or butter) to go with the scones! 3) The view is what you pay for. If I were to come here again, I would try something off their main menu. The special Grand Hotel tea blend I had was very good.

Yelp
3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the drinks, ambience, and service. We were staying at a local hotel and my husband and I stopped for an after dinner drink one night. It is a bar in a beautiful hotel overlooking the lovely waterfront, boats and the palace. We fell in love and so went back for another late night casual dinner - burger and fries. I had the portabella burger and fries. Great fries but overkill on the portabellas. There were 3 or 4 large mushrooms within one bed. Messy to eat. How much mushroom can one eat? Our son liked his burger that we brought with us. My husband ordered the steak and was not very impressed. Would we go back? Absolutely for drinks.

Yelp
After the under the bridges boat tour, my wife and i took a light lunch out of the rain at the hotel. We were able to grab a table from a no-show customer. The view is delightful over the harbor. We both had nice coffees and eggs with mushrooms. We thought that it would be light, But there was quite a bit. There were many yummy mushrooms. It was very tasty. The service was excellent. The meal was costly, but you are paying for an elegant room overlooking the marina. It was worth the cost. Go there.

Yelp
Love, Love, Love.... Love, Love, Love.... High Tea is so adorable and such a nice ladies date.... You get a 4 tiered tree of tea sandwiches and sweets - from cheesecakes to macaroons... it's just lovely!! Plus, of course, your tea! The brunch is also a winner! The traditional Swedish brunch is my favorite - you start with a basket of lovely pastries, followed by Blini's with roe, sour cream and onion YUMMY!!! Then you get a perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict (you can select ham or salmon) and finish off with Tiramisu! They let you substitute some of the a la carte items if you wish (like the belgian waffles in place of eggs benedict! if you have a sweet tooth) finally your coffee and tea.... The brunch lasted around 2 hours when all was said and done... The atmosphere is sophisticated, chic, upscale... It feels luxurious in there and at times wreaks of strong perfume! When there is not construction going on outside, there are great views of Stockholm if you ask to sit by the window... The tables are all very far apart, so it doesn't feel like you are sharing tea with your neighbor :) Highly recommended to anyone visiting Stockholm! It's a great way to taste traditional Swedish food - in a gourmet style!

Yelp
Ok, it's going to cost you, but this place can be one of the most strange and interesting places in town at times. Think of this, a drink here sets you back from 50-200 SEK if you're not going for anything special. So, the people who you run into here that are drunk are generally quite wealthy and strange drunks. Awkwardly removing a drunk man from a beautiful place like this one is an affair that is completely hilarious and noteworthy for anyone in life. The drinks and the desserts are completely top notch as you watch the show too. Just think of it as dinner/drinks theater. After giving a man in a tuxedo two packets of snus to hold him over one night here, I was grabbed by my cheeks and given a big kiss by him. Who would have guessed that my first kiss from a man would be from a man in a tuxedo in such a beautiful place like this, what more could a man want for a first kiss from a man? I must say that I can't guarantee as much of a dramatic time all the time, but it's worth a chance.

Yelp
Best cocktails you'll find in Stockholm - thus probably all of Sweden! The cocktails are made to perfection. I once ordered a Lynchburg Lemonade (they're awesome) which I'm prone to do everywhere. When the bartender was near finished and checked the taste successfully with a straw - he looked at it skeptically for a second as it stood seemingly finished on the counter. He then added one ice cube. He looked at it again, and added another ice cube to make it totally perfect. I think it was the best "Lynchie" I've ever had. They have a lot of other interesting cocktails too. Prices are premium, venue is traditionally classy.

Yelp
We stopped in upon arriving to Sweden. It was the first place walkable fron the hotel that was still serving food at close to midnight. Even after first checking yelp, most of the places we visited were closed outright, and for others, the kitchen was closed. We were initially worried about the dress code, as we were both in (slightly torn) jeans, one of us in flip flops, and having just come off an 18 hour flight, but the rest of the people in suits didn't seem to mind. Swedes are just a well dressed crowd, apparently. We both felt comfortable in the crowd (although I can't wait to shower!) Of course my phone was dead after the long flight, so I ran around finding chargers, which existed but were a bit scarce near the few open tables, so the wait staff volunteered to plug it in behind the reception desk and bring it back later. The staff were fantastic in general, bringing us chopsticks and crackers when we requested, and I did enjoy the triple helping of free bar snacks. Navigating the prices for an american is always hard in a new country, but the prices were reasonable for a fancy expensive american restaurant. As per the food. The shrimp cevice and the green rosemary olives were fantastic. The shrimp comes with salmon caviar, and the olives were a fantastic end to the meal. I might skip the mini mozzerella balls; I was unimpressed with the sauce, which tasted like sun dried tomatoes in ketchup. The drinks were great and unique. Scratch all of that. They just asked us to leave since one of us was wearing flip flops. The manager is now yelling at our waitress. Would have been 4 star, but now getting a 1. Check your shoes before you go.

Yelp
This is a cool bar located inside the upscale Grand Hotel. It's very classy but not so posh that it's stuffy. In other words you can wear nice looking jeans and perfectly fit in OK. I just wouldn't recommend wearing shorts or flip flops (Ha read that other Yelper's review. Sucker). The large space contains a nice combination of high bar seats and low slung lounge chairs. It's got a very relaxing atmosphere. When I visited I suspect many people were probably waiting for a table to open up in the hotel's nearby restaurants. I hear their restaurants are sort of famous. But I walked in only for a quick drink and I was fine with that. I got to enjoy a little bit of the Grand Hotel without actually checking in the Grand Hotel. So that was cool. The bartenders were professional and not snooty at all. They made me feel fully welcomed even though they could probably tell I was a American tourist. After all I was wearing my bright Uncle Sam costume. No. Not really. I'm kidding about the costume. Lots of people were ordering champagne so that's what I ordered as well. It's know it's hard to screw that up, but I say when in Rome... or in this case when in Stockholm... when in the Grand Hotel...
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I spent a sunset in the bar area and wow is the view worth the bar prices! The bartender made a drink from their spring menu for me to taste, so I don't know what it's called, but it was a local berry with vodka and a nutmeg cream on top (yummy!). I then had a glass of champagne and the "Toast with Bleak Roe from Kalix, Sour cream and Red onion". The toast was pretty large for an appetizer and I actually used it as my light dinner for that evening. So although it's a bit pricey, the view and service definitely make this a must-see bar!

Yelp
Yummy drinks. Beautiful space. Good people watching. Classic Hotel. Came here two nights in a row in October during a week in Stockholm. Both evenings were really chilly and windy fall nights. First night, I really wanted warm alcoholic beverages so the handsome bartender served up a hot toddy then glögg. Yum! I love glögg - reminds me of Christmas! Second night, I just let the handsome bartender be creative and serve me a drink that I would like. (I only do this if I am friends with the bartender!) An elderberry cocktail - dangerously delicious! Jag måste kommer tillbaka och ta med High Tea. Jag tycker om High Tea och god mat och drick.

Yelp
Food was good and we had the jr. suite following a cruise and the street music with heavy bass drummed on very late into the night. Room was hot and couldn't open the window because of the music. The music was far louder than the tv. Wouldn't repeat.

Yelp
The Afternoon Tea was amazing. This is a great option for a girls day out. The best grown up tea party you will ever attend
google avatar

Sheeva G.

Yelp
I dined here multiple times during my stay at the Grand Hotel, and I loved it. I had a superb breakfast with the most delicious juices and I was able to sit by the window with a gorgeous view of the water and palace. I also had a beautiful (and enormous) lunch as well. There is a large list of craft cocktails that I would suggest anyone to try, and the service was superb
google avatar

Vishal G.

Yelp
Had the classic brunch menu, with strawberry margarita (which was great). The english muffin with the eggs was a bit tough and they lose one star for that. The best part however was the view right across from the royal palace. Service was very good as well - relaxed and well-paced and the staff was very attentive and excellent.

Yelp
A proper and traditional bar located at Grand Hotel serving excellent cocktails and drinks, afternoon tea and smaller dishes, Good selection of wines. A very nice meeting place with cordial and excellent service. Super nice!

Chris F.

Yelp
I have heard so much about the Afternoon Tea experience at the Grand Hotel and was really looking forward to this. I went there with my daughter and unfortunately this was not really for what we were hoping for. The environment is unbeatable, however the service and the food was not up to standard. The waiting staff were friendly but so inattentive and we felt many times being ignored. I opted for the additional glass of champagne but was told that it was better to wait with the tea after the savory dishes. The problem was there was no one checking up when it was time to get the fresh pot of tea. Afternoon Tea without tea. After quite some time I went to get my daughter's teapot that for some reason was placed on a different table and was then spotted by a waiter. I get much better service at my favorite diner in Texas. The food was too sweet including the scones with the added sugar on top. I would just go there for the drinks and skip the Afternoon tea.

Yelp
Dont pay attention to the hours on the website for brunch! Cane here at 12:10 and they said they've already switch to lunch!! so it's not till 5pm!
