Our recent stay at the Grand Hyatt Goa was, unfortunately, quite disappointing and fell well short of what one would expect from a 5-star property.
To start with the positives – the pool was truly excellent, beautifully maintained and a highlight of the property. The beach and the buggy service were also very efficient and added to the experience. The overall infrastructure, particularly from the beach side, was impressive. The spa services were top-notch and very professionally managed, although there was confusion regarding the application of discounts – some guests received them, others didn’t, and there seemed to be no clear policy, which was frustrating.
While some of the staff members were kind, helpful and courteous, the overall communication between departments was very poor. Despite sending all required identification in advance and calling the hotel to ensure a smooth check-in, none of this information was passed on. The deposit I had already paid was also not recorded properly, leading to unnecessary delays during checkout as the staff struggled to locate the payment record.
There were other basic shortcomings that surprised me for a hotel of this calibre. For instance, there was no hand-washing sink in the main restaurant – a very basic necessity in India, where not everyone uses cutlery. The only option was to go to the restroom, which meant elderly guests had to climb stairs just to wash their hands before and after meals.
The in-room television did not work and required guests to use their own phones to mirror content – with functionality limited to Android phones. This is simply not acceptable in a luxury hotel.
Overall, while certain aspects of the stay were enjoyable, the lack of internal coordination, inconsistent service standards, and basic infrastructural oversights made this a disappointing experience. The Grand Hyatt Goa has potential, but significant improvements are needed for it to truly live up to its 5-star rating.
