11 Places to Find Spicy, Tingly Mapo Tofu

"This slightly upscale Cantonese restaurant on the fringes of Chinatown provides a mapo tofu appropriately more bland than the Sichuan restaurants here and there in the neighborhood. This crowd-pleasing version is heavy on the peas and cilantro, with a dark, soy-laced gravy. Just don’t expect any mouth burn." - Robert Sietsema

Four Restaurants Ushering in a New Chapter for Cantonese Food in NYC - Eater NY

"Grand Master 95 offers an ambitious menu that includes Chinese-American favorites, homestyle offal dishes, and more-expensive seafood. Dim sum is largely ignored, but live ocean fish are available with traditional Cantonese preparations." - Robert Sietsema

We were in NYC for a few days and really want to experience a good Cantonese style Asian food. After looking and reading lots of reviews, we came across the Grand Master 95. This place is small, cozy, and very New York vibe. The food was AMAZING, and the special beers they offered was really smooth and good for the food choice. Appetizers=Best! Food=Great! Service= absolute BEST!

Amazing food & super friendly staffs. We had 8 people and every one said the same thing. Can’t wait for the next time to try more things on the menu. Lobster sticky rice is a must! Also, there are many cool beer selections that you can’t find in the market. Make sure to try a couple of them to go with the dishes.

Had a wonderful dinner tonight at this new restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Grand Master. Ingredients are very fresh, seems the owners go to the market in person to pick up certain ingredients. Razor Clams with snappy bean sprouts stirred fried in a slight peppery sauce was delicious. Mixed mushrooms with fried Egg Tofu and loofa squash was also very fresh and tasty. Dungess crab with stirred fried sticky rice is highly recommended. This would go very well with a nice beer and they do sell the limited Grimm and Bronx brewery beer.

Came here for the first time with family and it was some of the best seafood dishes I’ve ever had! Lobster with sticky rice was my favorite, and the oysters were a close second (they were super fresh!). Also the fried shrimp with Mayo and condensed milk deserves a mention. Very homey and satisfying place and service was excellent as well, would highly recommend!

This is now my favorite Chinese restaurant in manhattan. Food was so good and the staff were all so warm and kind. Also this is such a niche thing but the fact that they give you watermelon at the end of the meal made me feel so at home because a lot of the restaurants in guangzhou would give you sliced fruit and a little dessert at the end of the meal I’m not crying you are

Great customer service and pricing, but...could use a lil clean-up in the meal prep. Maybe it's my own nuance, but the crispy garlic chicken was fresh cut, bone-in (left bone-in) so there was some clean up to do and bone fragments in my bites, finally I gave up. Flavor was great but the work outweighed the taste. Similar story with the fresh lobster, amazing taste and flavor, but just cut up w shell on. We recommended to staff to pull the bones/shells, would make it next level amazing. They said the process would be hindered. Everyone has a reason for what they do...this was just my nit-picking experience. Amazingly friendly staff.

This place is a gem. Their menu is so unique—where else can you wash down lamb chops and lobster sticky rice with local craft beer and then finish off the meal with watermelon slices and Italian ice?! Only at Grand Master 95!! 🦞🫶🥹
