The Best Doughnut Shops in San Francisco | Eater SF

"This hole-in-the-wall doughnut shop does all the classics well, from puffy sugar doughnuts to chocolate-covered old fashioneds to bar doughnuts draped in maple glaze. But what this shop also does well is a number of Chinese baked goods, including pineapple buns and coconut buns. No doubt if you bring a variety of doughnuts and pastries into work from Grand, you’ll be the new office hero." - Dianne de Guzman

Google
A true neighborhood cafe - this means friendly service where the owner recognizes the patrons and genuinely asks about their day; loved the glazed donut, and the drip coffee; I went here after tennis at Delores Park . I like the red and yellow canopy with white lettering! Cafe is cozzy , well lit, clean, well maintained. Wonderful murals near this cafe. Great owner / manager ; also loved the effigies of Cambodian gods inside this place.

Google
Had a ham and cheese pastry and got my kids chocolate glaze. Also got myself some doughnut holes because... It's vacation right?!?! The doughnut holes were the best I've ever had. I've never put something so airy and fluffy in my mouth. Price was also great after a week of high SF prices. You will love this place. I sure did. No frills but all the best flavors!

Real Fresh

Google
I loved it!! Very SCRUMPTIOUS!! Had me one of the best apple fritters ever. I LOVE ZEE FRITTERS!! This lil'donut shop even carries already made sandwiches. So instead of making a sandwich for lunch you can pick one up here before work. They make a variety of them here like a B.L.T, or a Tuna sandwich. All bread, pastries, donuts and coffee served very fresh. It's also THE favorite place of mine to quickly pick up a hot cup of columbian coffee and a strawberry doughnut on the way home in the morning. But best of all are the freshly baked rolls they make here that are so soft and amazing. Ill grab a half dozen before going home as well so I can have fresh bread rolls for lunch and saving a couple for dinner is a perfect delight.

Google
A bakery selling a variety of Western baked goods like donuts and dinner loaves. I really like their pre-made sandwiches. If you're buying less than $10, it's cash only.

Google
Cake donuts, maple filled donuts apple pastries. Get there they run out of filled donuts fast. The guy service us was fast and it's worth to go early and get your filled eclair donuts. Before they run out! I'd recommend my friends definitely.

Always a good place for coffee and donas, since I remember back in the 90s.

Went here to pick up treats to bring to work and was so presently surprised! The Chinese couple running the store seemed very kind and hard working. The donuts were still warm when I got them at 8am. I picked out 3 huge glazed/sugar/chocolate covered donuts, two small cake donuts with toppings, and an almond croissant. The glazed and sugar covered yeast donuts were by far the winners. They were impossibly soft and fluffy, perfect amount of sweetness, and perhaps a bit oily but somehow in an enjoyable way. They are donuts after all, which by definition is dough fried in oil. Cake donut was very soft and cakey inside and almost crispy outside with a thick coating. Almond croissant was decent, but wouldn’t get it again. Still giving this place 5 stars because the big donuts were sooo good and all that was $7.25 which is an absolute steal.

Yelp
Top spot for freshly made donuts, pastries, breads and sandwiches! I was craving a donut and one of my favorite is Apple fritter. I have read about Grand Mission Donuts & Bakery recently and frequently get my Lattes from Linea, one bock away. I went this morning around 9:30am and there was a short line (4 in front of me) but the petite Asian lady was by herself behind the counter BUT was very friendly and efficient/fast! With 4 people in front when I arrived, I only had to wait a few minutes (3-4) before it was my turn. It is a very small place with limited seating but the glass case where the donuts, pastries were displayed was very neat, tidy and CLEAN! I asked for a a Apple Fritter but she was apologetic and said they were already sold out :( I saw bear claws (one of my favorite pastry!) and got one try as very few donut shops make them or make them well. I really like it!! It had a toasted almonds on top, was a large in size and had a nice light crunch on the outside and the filling had the right amount, not too much or too little. I especially liked that it was but greasy or oily. I highly recommend Grand Mission Donuts & Bakery and can't wait to try the Apple Fritter next time!!

Yelp
Grand Mission Donuts and Bakery gets the job done. It's hard to find a snack and hot coffee for under $5 in this area, but this place makes it happen. The lady at the counter is fast, friendly, and keeps the line moving, even when it's busy with locals stopping in. The selection is your run-of-the-mill donut shop with all the usual classics like glazed, old-fashioned, and maple bars. The donuts, though, were spectacular. Soft, fresh, and just the right amount of sweet, they were way better than I expected. They also have a small selection of pastries, including croissants and Chinese baked buns, adding a bit more variety to the mix. There's a small seating area inside if you want to sit for a bit, though most people seem to grab and go. Another plus is that they take Apple Pay, so you're not stuck needing cash like at some other old-school bakeries. I found this place by chance while heading back to my car and was glad to have an affordable option nearby. It's nothing fancy, but if you need a quick, satisfying bite, it does the trick.

Yelp
Hardworking family run business, different coffees like French Roast and Hazelnut to choose from (chose the regular blend and it was donut shop coffee, not strong but familiar.) Cake donuts are the way to go, jelly had only a scant teaspoon of gelatin filling deep inside the donut. Donut itself was fluffy and tasty though. They were kind especially since I spilled my coffee while trying to put a lid on it after adding cream. On a gritty corner of Mission and 18th, glad it hasn't been cleansed, gentrified and repackaged.

Yelp
Fine but wouldn't return. Service was quick and the woman helping was nice. Got donut holes and they were fine but nothing special. Glazed but very lightly. Not dense but not really light and fluffy. Didn't seem super donut-like but I'm not sure how to explain it.

Yelp
Was having a donut craving and the place I would usually go to near by was closed. Found Grand Mission Donuts (a small unassuming little spot) and got a glazed donut. It was really fresh and perfect. Not too sweet, just right!

Yelp
Growing up in Houston, my family constantly went to donut shops, but we never got donuts: always pigs in a blanket with cheese and jalapeños, or maybe ham and cheese. We called them kolaches; the Czech people who made them big in Houston called them klobasneks. This spot really does the trick. Places that are cheap like this are a dying breed. Thank God there's a spot in the Mission I can get a small bit of hot food in under 5 minutes.

Yelp
Good location next to the bus stop! Stopped in to duck out of the wind and wait for the bus there. Ham and cheese pastry was great and did the job. Also always see loaves of bread for $0.65! Bring cash if you aren't purchasing much!
google avatar

Yelp
Last time here, the pineapple bun was not fully baked. It was raw in the middle. The cheese danish was excellent but sadly I won't be returning here anytime soon.

Yelp
I love love love this place. Compares favorably to the best donuts I've ever had. Good range of pastries -- the turnovers are particularly yummy. Pineapple buns are a big seller but I wasn't a fan. I've never had a bad experience here. Plus they have cinnamon coffee and it's really cheap!

Yelp
Casual hole in the wall for all the classic doughnuts. Chocolate old fashion had an awesome glaze. The maple cake doughnut was so light and soft. Enjoy with your fave coffee for a sweet start to your day!

Yelp
Stopped by Grand Mission because it was open early and right next to the bus stop. Solid spot with lots of options. Had some of their Asian buns which were decent, though nothing to go crazy over. Wasn't too busy and there were plenty of seats. Staff was nice and efficient as well. While it Grand Mission may not be the place dreams are made of, it's an easy option when you need a quick morning breakfast pastry.

Yelp
twist donut was so good, our favorite out of the ones we tried. so fluffy and divine. Sadly they were out of a lot of chinese items like egg tart, bbq pork bun, etc at 4PM on a Saturday. Quite a constant line and stream of people on a weekend.

Yelp
Coffee is bargain basement swill, but the chocolate pastry was good, which is the only reason for an extra star. I am here today visiting this bakery again after they, earlier, made me pay twice for coffee, and accusing me of not paying. I don't forgive and forget, although I did want to give it another shot. This coffee tastes like it came from an office coffee pot from 1985. They charged me an actual dollar for using a credit card, and while they did show a sign saying there was a $10 minimum, they did not post the fee. So this is actually deceptive and illegal under state law. As is, to my knowledge, the fact that they didn't check my vaccination record. All the best to you, Grand Mission.

Yelp
this place is alright. ive gone here when i was you fer but i seen a old lady come in here and a worker denies her pennies. so rude and saw her count them one by one. she left sad and ut was very upsetting. food is stale sometimes and old if you dint come when they make it fresh. its such a tight place but at least they have bread. its very dark in there most of the times, i wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
Half Dozen Donuts for $6.00. I bought a half dozen donuts with sugar from this place trying to find a new favorite donuts shop. I knew it would be a tall order to match Bob's raised sugar donuts. and as I predicted, not quite as airy and fluffy as Bob's Donuts. (it's kinda bit cakey for me, and I'm not a fan of cake donuts). but if you're in the area, these donuts are cheaper and actually not bad. half dozen at Bob's $9.00 half dozen here $6.00 ask any cops which one is better if you're still undecided.

Yelp
This doesn't feel like the Mission, but here it is smack in the middle of it between a semi-hidden izakaya and a now-closed corner wine bar. Yet, like the mighty cockroach, Grand Mission will likely outlast them all because you can't underestimate a Chinatown-style bakery with no frills, just cheap carbs and sweets, a necessary part of the diet of the drunken cash-poor hipster. I frankly came in just to get out of the rain and found they sell custard tarts for $1.25 each (photo: http://bit.ly/2RFbTKr). Sold and yes, let me sit down at one of their formica tables to enjoy it. Which indeed I did. No apologies from this non-hipster. TART - 4 stars...satisfying little pie it was AMBIANCE - 3 stars...well, it isn't Tartine SERVICE - 4 stars...well, it isn't Tartine TOTAL - 4 stars...I can't ignore a $1.25 tart, can I? Yelp
Fast services and amazing breads! Always so warm, fresh and delicious!! There's usually always a line but it's def worth that wait!

Yelp
Grand Mission Donuts is a hotspot on busy Mission St. in the morning, mainly for their excellent selection of coffee. They have about 6 different coffee roasts to choose from, including a decaf. There's never a problem finding seating, and they make all of their donuts fresh each day with the exception of the pre-made bags... PRO-TIP: Get the $2.50 bag of 5-10 day old donuts or pastries. They have a selection of pre-made bags to choose from. They are hard to find but basically they sit behind the wall directly to your left as you walk in. Ask for them if you don't see them. This is the best donut deal in the city. The staff is fairly helpful, but not familiar with all the trendy diets out there so don't go here if you have restrictions. Also, there are currently no gluten-free options. But why go to a donut place if you are gluten-free. The last time I was there I did find a black hair in my coffee matching the length of the older asian lady who was at the cash register. I threw it away and helped myself to a fresh cup. She yelled there was no refills, so I dug the cup she had just watched me throw away, and showed her the hair. She then shrugged and waived for me to get a new cup.

Yelp
Very disappointed due to 2 things. 1) NO more egg tarts or any other Chinese goodies. BBQ bun was not authentic. 2) Prices went way up by 40%!!?? Been there once, but won't be coming back. Sorry...
google avatar

Yelp
The donuts here were just okay but they were open at night time and I was kind of craving donuts. There was an old lady that worked behind the counter when I went, and she was very friendly. Most of the donut and pastry items go for about $1-$2. I had the donut and the bread with hot dog things on top. They didn't taste the freshest, and given that it was night time I didn't exactly expect them to taste that way either. Still it was a good place that hit the spot quite well.

Yelp
I've been a customer of mission donuts for 10 years, even though they have subpar pastry... It's literally across the street from my house. Today I went in to get a large coffee, (for the millionth time) the young woman behind the counter, who knows me well... Refused to take 15 Pennys as part of my payment of $2.75. I tried to pay with 2 paper dollars, 2 quarters, a dime, and 15 pennies. She claimed no one accepted pennies from her, and rather than just accepting $2.60 and keeping me as a regular customer, she would only allow me to buy a small coffee. I told her she would be losing my business forever and she didn't care. I believe in supporting local businesses, especially in the mission district, but there has to be some equal respect given to the customer. EPIC FAIL! My daily coffee will NEVER AGAIN! be bought from that establishment. The people who run it have clearly demonstrated they don't value their regular local customers. I'll pay an extra dollar and get my coffee elsewhere. I encourage everyone to do the same.

Yelp
It may be one of SF's best kept donut secrets. No frills, Asian-owned shop near a bustling corner in the Mission. My husband is obsessed with their Maple filled donut and apple fritter. I'm partial to their plain old fashion glazed and glazed twist donut. There's just something about the dense yet fluffy spring of the dough when you bite in that is so satisfying. It goes without saying their treats are hella sweet but it's worth it. Their egg tarts and Chinese baked goods are pretty good but not sure I would go out of my way to get them, especially since we live in the Sunset. But whenever we are in the Mission, we always make sure we grab some donuts from here.

Yelp
Best mom & pop donut shop. The donuts are delicious and store is clean. Literally best chocolate croissant I've had. People loved the fresh bread too.
google avatar

Yelp
My friend and I decided to come here one morning to try out their donuts. This is definitely one of those hole in the wall places you do not want to miss out on. They had about 12 or so different types of donuts. My favorite thing about this place was that half of them were warm when biting into them! There were a couple of tables inside of here. It seems like this place is where all the locals hang out. They sell black coffee and there's a fridge with milk, teas, and juice options. The store is ran by an older couple who were sweet as can be. You could tell the donuts were baked every few hours since the husband kept on running out with trays full of them. Additionally this place is open late as well, so if you're craving donuts later at night, this is your place!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
We got 27 donuts for around $27. The donuts were great quality and a great size for price. When I ordered there, I didn't have cash and had to go to get some. The lady was really nice to me and kept the donuts for me - which I appreciated. Overall, great place for great pastries and donuts

Yelp
Saw this place across street of RIA.. and saw some yelp pictures of their bake goods. So Want to try.. I Bought 2 cream buns and 2 croissants. $5.50 total. Smell good . Got Home n start my first bite. Bun wasn't as soft , maybe it was late evening already. ??

Yelp
Really yummy pastries. The chocolate chip cookies were good. This place is cash-only though.
google avatar

Rod M.

Yelp
Walked in here on a cold day and picked up a single egg tart. The egg tart to be kind was not the best that I've had. The price for a single egg tart was $1.10. The gentleman running the shop was very kind and I'm sure the donuts were not bad but the Egg tart...eh.... I recently embarked on a completely pointless quest to rank places that sell Egg Tart...yes Egg Tart. Obviously given the nature of the food most of these places are in SF or Oakland Chinatown. Ranking explained: #1 (listed at the top) is my favorite/ #? (listed at the bottom) is my least favorite. Follow my profile to see my most recent reviews When I look at reviews sometimes just want to know where to go or how a user compares one venue against another to see if we have similar tastes. If you're curious, I have rankings for Boba, Bakeries and Ramen as well (random right?). I hope I can be helpful since so many Yelpers have helped me discover new places. 1 Golden Gate Bakery 2 Yummy Bakery 3 New Hollywood Bakery 4 Ruby King Bakery 5 Napolean Super Bakery 6 Wonder Food Bakery 7 Sum Yee Pastry 8 Grand Mission Donuts and Bakery
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
I love this place. Maybe because this was a great reoccurring memory of me and my grandma coming here on chore days for an afternoon treat. I bought 3 sizable rolls here the other day for like a dollar fifty or some wickedly cool price like that. The donuts here are consistent and always for the most part fresh. Little narrow place but haven't you heard of donut dashing? You buy your desired rounds and dash out, eating like a jet setter under an SF minute ;)
google avatar

Yelp
Ultra simple donut place w some hidden gem items. This is no posh fancy joint for u stuck up people ... hehehe This is a pretty good place for blue collar hard working class place which I hate if snobs put down this place The plain buns are a hit with the local as I waited in line. My fav so far ... The plain buns Hotdog inside bun The hotdog w cheese inside the bun The pork bun Will try the donuts next time ... keep see the good review on the sidebar

Yelp
Great donut shop. Easy to find location and very cool staff. Neighborhood style service

Yelp
This is a donut shop that I went to with my husband. He wanted a donut or something after we left Cha Cha Cha's. I was going to stand there and order nothing, but they had my sesame seed balls with black bean paste! Score. I really appreciated it. It was a cute little shop with french bread rolls, donuts, and Chinese delicacies. Yum! I haven't had a sesame seed ball in a while and it was great tasting one. I appreciate them doing this.

Yelp
The donuts are life changing! We also tried a blueberry cream danish and a red bean bun both were delicious but, them donuts though.

Anita B.

Yelp
Oh my oh my. So many donuts to choose from. Very friendly staff and we ended up with a huge box of donuts. Every single one of them were so delicious. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Fresh, warm glazed or sugar donuts around 8am. My inner child gets so excited when I stop by this place omw to work
google avatar

Yelp
This is a small don't shop on 18th and mission. Its about $1 a donut. There is also Asian pastries here. The donuts were good and fresh. I visited right before closing and they were still good. It's kind of small inside. Cash only.

Yosef D.

Yelp
This place really does a service for the community of the Mission district area. The bread was sold out until 5pm and so many people came to make orders of bread for Thanksgiving. The friendly woman in the counter was telling me this is everyday people want sandwiches, pastries and bread! Offering such economical prices fot delectable treats in SF makes this place a true gem. Be prepared to dunk your treats into the piping hot mocha cappuccino or coffee. The doughnuts taste as good as they look in the photos...if I dare say so good!
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
Best chocolate donut I've ever had. Everything is great there but the chocolate donut is second to none
google avatar

Gracie A.

Yelp
Their donuts are very good, I personally think A LOT better than Bobs. What I don't like is if you come at 8 it's too early and they don't have anything ready and then 9 it's then sold out. So you have to come in a very narrow margin of an hour which changes everyday if you want something specific.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Best ham and cheese croissant I've ever had! I've should've ordered 2 of them lol go down and try them for your selfs
google avatar

Lolia S.

Yelp
There's one case of donuts, one case of Chinese baked buns and pastries and Mexican buns on top. Items weren't labeled. They had the usual kinds of buns: hot dog, egg & ham, pork sung, BBQ pork, red bean, coconut, green onion, etc. The croissants looked big and doughy. * BBQ pork bun ($1.20): glossy golden color, soft, chewy, slightly sweet dough. The filling had good flavor; it had chopped pork bits with the flavor of soy, a little salty but better than the usual goopy red stuff. The bun didn't have much filling and the pork was quite fatty. * Red bean bun ($1.20) http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/y1_s1xAC7eRK1ws3L92i-Q?userid=NOUfyJW-BAo_-Cbfo8edww#Kq_ixN5NVvJkc8udpMEblg: twisted style with no sesame seeds, doughy, lightly sweet, soft light, doughy, bigger than average, satisfying, not a strong red bean flavor The doughy big Chinese baked buns are comforting but need more filling. This review is dedicated to Nobu K., Man Tao Man, who convinced me to come here for buns.

Yelp
Grand Mission Donuts has donuts, chinese baked buns, and coffee. didn't see the buns/wasn't looking for them. saw donuts : .75, 1. ,1.35 eats: old fashioned (.75) cream filled donut (1.35) buttermilk donut(1.35) -donuts very fresh, very flavorful, pretty big sized -excellent value coffee: farmers coffee, passed. crumbs: -baked buns were an afterthought -donuts here one of better ones encountered.

Yelp
Hard working nice people who make GREAT donuts !! Coffee is pretty good too. Stop by when you're in the 'hood.
google avatar

Yelp
After reading all these reviews, I had to try the buttermilk bar. With chocolate. Oh. My. God. Along with being super friendly and sweet, this bakery is a little center of activity. Everyone I know and work with in the area goes here. Everyone. The best, the best, the best.
google avatar

Eli S.

Yelp
Amazing donuts, amazing prices! There was a line out the door when I got there so I knew it had to be good but my expectations were blown out of the water. Best donut I've had in the city -- simple, fresh delicious!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
We are visiting San Francisco for the weekend and randomly ran into this place. It instantly became my favorite bakery of any city. Fresh bread constantly coming out and selling out. Amazing looking treats and donuts. I had this ham and cheese with a tomato on a sweet bread that I'll come back for tomorrow. Taking an apple fritter back to the hotel also. Lovely asian family running the store.
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
This place secretly has the best buttermilk bars I've found in the city. Big, greasy, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with a touch of that buttermilk tang that makes the bar one of my absolute favorites. Added bonus they also have some different flavors than your usual glazed and chocolate with both vanilla and maple iced available. The other donuts I've tried here are also on par with most mom n pop shops but the buttermilk bars are what make this a true 5 star SF bad boy breakfast destination.
google avatar

Jocelyn M.

Yelp
As I lay my head down each night in Brooklyn, I say a quiet prayer that I will wake up on Mission and 18th. Just so I can buy a chocolate croissant, almond croissant, and a cream-filled donut from this place. Wonderful service. Fresh pastries. Great prices. I'm in love, and will forever be pining for this place from the other coast...
google avatar

Vanessa A.

Yelp
Delicious donuts and coffee and cappuchino prices are great. The cappuchinos' aren't fresh made. They come from a machine, however, I liked! I had both the vanilla and the mocha one. I liked the mocha one better though. The donuts were very light and tasty. My only complaint, the hours listed on Yelp aren't right. It says they open at 6:30, and at 7:15 they still weren't open.
