Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"Hotel Nikko offers a breathtaking view of the city skyline and impeccable service that truly exemplifies Japanese hospitality." - Mark Fedeli

Nice and peaceful location away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Great place to relax, but transit takes about an hour to the city center despite having the train station in front of the hotel. Pool and other facilities are not included with a ridiculous price of about $15USD per guest and per day. For a 4 star hotel, you’d think it would already be included with the costly price. Other than that, the hotel workers were very considerate and mindful.

I want to be very clear in this review because I believe this hotel is a true gem. In the opinion of many, Odaiba isn't the best area to stay in Tokyo due to its location. However, thanks to the Yurikamome train line, whose Daiba station is right outside the hotel, the transfer from this hotel to the central Shimbashi station is a convenient 15-minute ride. Furthermore, just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, the Rinkai line provides access to the popular Shibuya or Shinjuku area in about 25 minutes, without needing to transfer. That said, I can describe my stay at the Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba. The room is spacious, which isn't very common in Tokyo. I was fortunate enough to stay on the 24th floor, and the views of Tokyo Bay are breathtaking. The bathroom is comfortable, and the bed is firm. The facilities are understated and elegant. The service is impeccable. The food is superb. In short, a very pleasant experience. One detail struck me as odd: using the facilities at Le Club (gym, pool, jacuzzi, showers, changing rooms) requires a ¥2200 fee. While not an exorbitant sum, it seemed strange that a hotel guest would have to pay extra to use these facilities. That said, everything at Le Club was impeccable, a perfect place to unwind after a busy day in the city. Odaiba offers plenty of fun and entertainment, as well as an interesting culinary scene. There's a Lawson convenience store open 24 hours a day right at the hotel entrance, which is very convenient. In conclusion, I highly recommend this hotel, whether you're visiting for leisure, business, or shopping.

Google
I think its in a great location, bus and train is close by or taxis outside the main entrance. A nice area to be in lots of shops and places to eat. A good breakfast. Large comfortable rooms with all mod-cons. And they lay out lovely pajamas for you, so when you arrive late you can just pop into bed without unpacking. Really lovely I throughly recommend.

Google
Very large hotel which could easily make it feel impersonal and cold. This is not the case, the staff were all very friendly and eager to help. Very quick and efficient check in which was appreciated after a long flight. Always plenty of staff in the reception area who were very helpful with providing advice and directions.|Hotel room was spacious and clean, very comfortable.|Didn't have breakfast there on the days that we stayed as we were out early but noticed there was a queue at the restaurant on the ground floor on both days and other guests did mention there were delays so recommend reserving a time if you want to have breakfast there. Plenty of shops and bakeries very close so getting an early breakfast is not a problem.|Hotel location is very close to Aqua City for shops and restaurants and train station.

The hotel is old but of good quality. However, staff service and attitudes are terrible. If the management wants customers they need to rectify staff performance. We heard many guests saying similar comments to ours. We arrived off a coach with a large amount of luggage. Usually in a 4 or 5 star hotel there are porters to help but there was no one in the driveway. We took a trolley and started to load our luggage when a porter came and unloaded our luggage and told us we had to take it into the hotel ourselves. We were not to take a trolley! The hotel foyer was chaotic with luggage and people everywhere. It was not apparent where we were to go so we lined up at checkin where we were greeted by a very rude female who told us we could not checkin yet. We asked if we could just do the paperwork and she rolled her eyes and said no. She told us to leave our luggage in the foyer and to return at 3pm. She seemed to have perfected eye rolling as everything we asked was greeted with eye rolling. We were unhappy to leave our luggage in the foyer so took it to the bell captain. They were equally unhappy but tied a rope around our luggage and left it outside the luggage room. When we came to checkin our room was upgraded as the hotel was full. But upgraded meant room only. We could not use the associated lounge even though the upgrade was for the hotels convenience. We had requested a king bed but were given 2 singles in the upgraded room. We were told there were no large beds even though our floor corridor seemed to be fairly vacant. The bathroom was okay but the shower over the bath meant I had to step over the bath to get into the shower. This is no mean feat with a hip and knee problem. Furthermore we have never stayed in a hotel where guests have to pay to use the pool and gym. This was very disappointing. The buffet breakfast is of low quality so don’t expect great food. Although the hotel is well situated by two shopping centres and access to a private train line we would not stay here again unless we were assured staff training had taken place.

Google
The room facilities were excellent, clean, and well-maintained. The view was pleasant as well, although part of the ocean scenery is blocked by the Hilton in front.|However, the service — especially toward foreign guests — was quite disappointing. The most unacceptable incident happened during breakfast. A middle-aged Japanese waitress cleared our plates before we had even finished eating, then placed a “Seat Available” sign on our table as if we had already left. She did this without asking, without confirming, and without the slightest sense of apology or courtesy.|This behavior was rude, disrespectful, and completely ruined our dining experience. For a hotel of this level, such unprofessional service is simply unacceptable. I truly hope the management will take this seriously and improve the training of their staff.

Google
Lovely outlook and location. |Main negative of this hotel is the gym and pool. It was 31 degrees here and the outside pool was shut for autumn. The gym is not accessible 24 hours, and does not open until 7am or 7.30am some days, so if you want to get in a workout before a business meeting, sorry, out of luck. This should be changed. |Great running trails right out the front door of the hotel. There is a train stop at this hotel. Shopping mall and beach close by. |Rooms are decent size, but the beds are small. Our room was an executive twin -- I expected two queen size beds but all the twin rooms have single beds. My 6 foot plus son struggled a bit. |Breakfast buffet passable, but not flash.

Stayed 2 nights. Hotel is beautiful. Room was spacious and very clean. Great view of bridge. Walking distance to malls like Aqua city and attractions like life size Gundam. Would stay again.

Yelp
Check in was super fast and efficient. The hotel is very nice lobby. The carpet is dated. The room is nice. Comfortable bed and great shower and washroom. You have to pay to use to gym; 2200 yen. Also the restaurants only serve local cuisine which is fine but the hours are terrible. Lots of business travelers here and airline crews. Should offer room service 24/7 with some Western menu items. Located across from train station in Ginza district. Huge mall next to hotel for shopping and eating.

Yelp
This place gets 5 star from: - extremely efficient and polite people - always willing to help - the elevator was so quiet - sushi for breakfast - huge rooms compared to what Japan usually offers - great coffee machine in room - nespresso - Toto toilets - PJ for you to use in the room One feedback to them - the gym and breakfast both open at 7am and work mtgs start at 8am - not much time to hit the gym and get breakfast

Yelp
Stayed here in May and it was such a great choice. The hotel is beautiful and super close to both Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea -- really convenient location. The staff was kind and welcoming, and the room was way more spacious than I expected. The breakfast buffet was amazing -- so many fresh options and a great way to start the day before heading to the parks. Everything felt clean, comfortable, and relaxing. Would absolutely stay here again next time!

Yelp
We had a lovely almost week long stay. While my husband and I don't normally feel like to standard beds are enough for the three of us, we easily moved the beds together and had more than enough space. The room included breakfast and we had 3 restaurants in the hotel to choose from. The 1st floor and lobby breakfast buffet offered the same selection, except the lobby restaurant offered more comfortable and spacious seating. The 3rd breakfast option, the sushi restaurant on the top floor, was easily the best option. Set menu, instead of a buffet, but I thought it tasted best and there's an amazing view The hotel is conveniently located next to the U Line and two shopping malls, Aqua City and Diver City, which includes many restaurants and the Unicorn Gundam statue. Also just a few minutes from the boat cruises in case you'd rather not use the rail system.

Yelp
They charge members for to use the gym facilities 2,200 yen per day. Absolutely ridiculous. Breakfast cost 4,000 yen buffet style nothing really good about it though. Has a cool bar upstairs on the 30th floor with a restaurant. Nothing is open 24 hours at this hotel if you want to use the gym you have to wait till it opens and same if your hungry. Some things open at 7am others later. The room was nice and had a mini fridge to put cold stuff into. The front desk knows English but very hard time understanding when you ask them questions that are not about the hotel like suggestions on where to eat. Or where to get certain things. Definitely sign up as a one harmony member if you stay here because you get %10 off breakfast if you do and it's free to sign up. You are not near any sign seeing so you have to take a cab into Tokyo to see anything.

Yelp
The hotel itself is beautiful and clean. Room accommodations are nice and have the standard amenities. The hotel staff is friendly and speaks English well. The Hotel is located next to AquaCity and the train station, but if you're looking to explore downtown Tokyo itself, you are easily a 20 min cab ride away, if that is your transportation of choice. The Hotel does offer a variety of restaurants. However, the hours of all their restaurants are not exactly convenient for those on an "off-schedule". There are large gaps between services where they are closed and no restaurant or cafe in the Hotel opens before 7am; so if you're looking for an early morning breakfast for those starting their day(s) off early, no such luck. Breakfast isn't anything to write home about, as it's a pretty sub-standard buffet style breakfast for around ¥4000 (if you're a One Harmony member you receive 10% off). In addition, the hotel's gym is not included; you must pay an additional daily admission to access. If you choose to pay to use the facilities, again, it has inconvenient hours and doesn't open up until 7am.

Yelp
I really like this hotel. It is very stylish and is huge. Connected to Aqua City Odaiba which has a train station and a mall on one side and Divercity Tokyo Plaza on the other side. There are many restaurants with several of them having a breakfast buffet that has many types of food. Clean bathrooms all over the hotel, a tea parlor, a beautiful wedding venue, both ice and vending machines, the elevators are fast and they will loan you an umbrella if it is raining. There is also a convenience store right outside (Lawsons) that's has a little if everything. The rooms are big with two full size beds, a tv, coffee maker, hair dryer, refrigerator and the air conditioner works. Everyone is really nice and helpful which makes your stay extra special.....

Yelp
Very welcoming staff and beautiful hotel! We had a gorgeous view from our room, and there was were a lot of stocked amenities. They gave us kids slippers for the toddlers and kiddie toothbrushes too. There's additional things you can request for if you have babies, like cots, toilets, playmats, bed guards, etc. The hotel is super close to diver city mall, aqua city, and odaiba station, which made it super convenient to get around to places. I loved the location so much. It was also super helpful that we had a Lawson's directly below the hotel. They delivered an Japanese newspaper printed in English to the door in the morning, which I thought was neat. Housekeeping did an amazing job tidying up too, during our stay. They have a bakery, teppanyaki, and other eateries in the hotel too, but they opened later than we get up, so we never got to try it. We enjoyed our stay here, and we'll definitely choose to come again the next time we visit Japan!

Yelp
My 19 yr old, 17 yr old, spouse and I booked 2 rooms for Saturday check in through Wednesday check out, for our Tokyo vacation. Asian hotels do not typically allow more than 3 people in 1 room. We got 2 double beds in each room. Our international flight arrived around 6 am Sat morning, but we were able to drop off our luggage (for check in after 2 pm). There is a money exchange ATM in the lobby but the rate is higher than at the airport. We rode the monorail, located a few minutes's walk from the hotel, to Tokyo. That evening we explored the area around the hotel and watched the sunset over Rainbow bridge. View from one of our rooms was blocked by a tall building next door, and the other view was not as good as outside. Pool & fitness room were extra cost so we didn't use them. Rooms included an abundance of toiletries (more than expected), but what I found interesting was no body lotion is provided. Beds were firm, as is the norm in Asia, which my kids had to get used to. Breakfast in the Garden Dining & the Lobby Cafe, had the same options on weekends and weekdays --even the daily special fish was mackerel on all 4 days we stayed. Wish they would change at least the main entree, as most other hotels (even less star hotels) do. Miso soup was good but okayu needed more options to add flavor -- we're used to Chinese congee so this was too watery. I enjoyed their Japanese options more than their Western -- their french toast did not have enough egg flavor, but the Tamagoyaki was delish. There's also someone making fresh omelets every morning. We did not use the Sushi breakfast option upstairs as my kids did not want only sashimi (which was the one-plate option for breakfast).

Yelp
My family and I had the great time at this hotel. Staff are kind and services are wonderful. We had the lounge access so we were welcomed with drinks and food upon arrival. Amazing views and amenities in the room (all the drinks and food in mini fridge were complimentary), and the room charge was so reasonable! I couldn't believe it! It's not the most convenient location if you are visiting many tourist spots but it is worth the train ride. We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Beautiful hotel however I left a drawer fell of my belongings and when I called I was told that they only found a pair of black boots. My purse was in there along with money my immunization card. Also travel cubes and my hello kitty purse

Joanne N.

Yelp
The Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba hotel was an excellent place to stay. The service as excellent as. I wanted to find a furisode kimono for my teenage grand daughter the hotel was most helpful. They researched 3 places for me and I was successful in finding what I was looking for. This hotel is continently located, walking distance to trains and restaurants . The rooms were clean, roomy and comfortable .

Yelp
Super expensive. Super nice. The breakfast buffet upstairs was $42 each. It was nice but not worth $42 (how could it be?) Rooms clean & fabulous. Located in a harborside complex of malls, so if you don't want to drop a bundle there are plenty of breakfast places within walking distance.

Yelp
This hotel was one of the best hotels i stayed. The reason? It was the customer service. When you first walk in, everyone greets you, yes i know that's their tradition, but other hotels, I've stayed in, they didn't do all that. They kept on bowing to us everytime i walked pass, so it was like a bowing contest. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The bathroom has a tub and a shower which was great! The beds were comfortable and was very spacious. The housekeeping team did a great job restocking and cleaning everything in the room. Location was a huge plus here. You can walk to the subway and other malls and stores close by. There is a Gundam cafe in walking distance! I highly recommend booking this place and if you are lucky , you'll get a room with a view of the bridge!

Yelp
Great breakfast Both good. Japanese and western style. Great view from 31st floor. I could enjoy the great view of rainbow bridge and Tokyo tower and sky tree from our table. Highly recommended. Plus great pool and sauna with ice cold water bath! You will love it.
google avatar

Eddie T.

Yelp
Excellent service. Excellent hotel. Clean rooms, air purifier, bidet, etc... I also had a great view of the Rainbow Bridge. Close to the bus, train, shopping, and good restaurants. They also helped me book a reservation at jiro, which was a mistake. No pictures, indigestion for rushing the meal, and a disdain for foreigners. Never go to jiro, so not worth it.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed First we had to pay for the gym pool and sauna? Second my strap that ties my yoga mat went missing from my room... lastly... no real ATMs... again for the money... disappointing.
google avatar

Mitos E.

Yelp
Check in was fast. People at the receptionist area are very friendly and so helpful. I love that you can stroll outside the hotel. Beautiful view. Shopping mall is walking distance as well and there's a lot of places to go around the area. The convenient store outside the hotel is so convenient and there are a lot pf choices of food to buy for breakfast. Takes about 30 minutes to get to Tokyo, but the ride is enjoyable. Love it!
google avatar

Erica T.

Yelp
They have amazing customer service in Japan like always, and in this hotel they where awesome!!! We stayed here for a week and I don't mind going back. The view is awesome and the rooms where great quality, it was very nice inside and fancy. There prices where great too, you won't regret booking here if you come to Japan for vacation.

Yelp
This is my second stay within two years at Grand Daiba. They recently changed and added the Nikko name but the hotel still remains essentially the same. Great location right adjacent to the Yurikamome transit line that takes you into Tokyo. Rooms are huge for the asian market and the service here is alway top notch. Also next door to all shopping and super views of Tokyo bay
google avatar

Donna M.

Yelp
Grand Nikko has become our favorite hotel in Tokyo. The service, the location to the Yurikamome line, and the proximity to Aqua City and other malls in the area make it so convenient. An overall gorgeous hotel with wonderful amenities.

Aza Y.

Yelp
Great service. Clean. Lots of shops. The entire hotel smells good too. Super close to rail system.

Andrew G.

Yelp
Huge rooms! First class finishes and build out. Great location for tourists. Lot's of cool stuff within walking distance or a couple of train stops. Close to the giant Gundam robot, the replica statue of liberty, and the Rainbow bridge. Pretty close to the Onsen Theme park.

Kelly D.

Yelp
Dropped by looking for some kind of workout / shower facilities for runners. Turns out have some inconsistent hours making it not worthwhile. Ladies were very helpful though. And the wedding setup is outrageous.
