"A St. Paul institution, Grand Ole Creamery makes its ice cream in-house and doles out giant servings in fresh waffle cones. Popular flavors include Black Hills Gold (caramel ice cream with Oreos and praline pecans) and Macdaddy (butter pecan ice cream with Oreos).  The lines are long on hot summer nights, but they move quickly." - Eater Staff, Stacy Brooks

Great ice cream parlor with reasonable prices! The staff are somewhat distractable but super nice. Lots of varieties to choose from for ice flavors and other sweet treats. The homemade waffle cones were sooo good! Indoor and outdoor seating. Definitely recommend!

Let's go straight to the point.. this is not a fancy place for fancy people that only care about looking good and posting pictures...this is for people that love food, do not count calories and are looking to have the best ice cream in the whole state of Minnesota!! Very accommodating people serving you as you were the best ice-crean-critic...you will love it here.

Google
Amazing place to get some ice cream! Taro and Pistachio flavor as a split single scoop was amazing, along with a Sunday and a malt for our group. It was way more than enough ice cream even as a single scoop! Both flavors were very delicious without being overpowering and the quality was great! Presidential even. The service was great and we got our order fairly quickly. 100% would return and excited to try more flavors next time!

This place is amazing. From the handmade waffle cones that you can smell wafting down the street as you approach. To the crazy number of selections of ice cream flavors. It will leave everyone happy who grabs an order. At peak times the line out the door can get long. But it moves fast and it's worth the wait.

🍦Grand Ole Creamery🍦 Love my stop in here! I had the split one scoop (massive portion) and got the Black Hills Gold & Coffee break ice cream. Both were decent - nothing too special or over the top good. For the quality, I thought the price was quite high ($8 for 1 scoop). The atmosphere and service were really great though!

Google
Always a line but with a reason. I got the Monkey Sundae and at first they were confused as it is probably the most ordered thing on the menu but they made it so good they knocked it out of the park!

This place was on my list for a long time and I got to visit this finally. Loved the place and how they decorated it. As soon as I enter it smelled like waffle heaven. Love it that they make there waffle on site and fresh. Coming to the flavors I tried most of the flavors and loved them. We took a 5scoop sampler and that’s the best way to have multiple scoops you tried. Strawberry cheese cake was my fav and there are others too. Always recommend this place.

Google
I got the taro ice cream in a waffle cone and it was delicious! The place smells like the made-on-site waffle cones immediately as you enter. Staff is friendly and helpful. It was a bit busy when we got there but the line moves fast.

Yelp
A staple of the twin cities for the last 40 years! Delicious homemade ice cream and waffle cones. $8 for a single in a waffle cone. $7 for a single sugar/cake cone or bowl. Or pay a $1 extra if you want to split between two flavors. If you really can't decide you can get the 5 flavor sampler. The staff is younger, but very nice and gets the job done! Cute malt shop vibes inside.

Yelp
The ice cream was delicious. The staff wasn't very friendly or efficient. They were all over the place taking our order and they didn't seem to care. While I was waiting for my monkey sundae one of the employees was eating just casually. The other started flirting with a guy that walked inside in and stopped making my sundae. My family received their order and I kept waiting for mine. The girl finally told me that they didn't have all the ingredients for the sundae. It would have been nice if she would have told me sooner instead of having me wait for a long time. Like I said the ice cream was good. We all enjoyed it very much. The place is very casual and it's small. You can sit in the restaurant that's attached to it.

Alison M.

Yelp
The staff was very disorganized and unfriendly. The person who was taking my order complained very loudly to multiple coworkers about the fact that I had a nut allergy and had asked her to use a clean ice cream scooper to avoid cross contamination. The person at the cash register also couldn't keep track of whose order was whose/ who was paying for what and made mistakes during several transactions. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars is because the ice cream was good and they gave me and my friend pretty big scoops.

Tyra L.

Yelp
The single scoop was huge!!! They have a ton of flavors to choose from, some classic some more unique. I wish they had listed out what was in each flavor as opposed to just the name. Hard to know if there are nuts or even what the actual flavor is on some of them. Not too much seating but it's winter so it was pretty quiet in there.

Susan K.

Yelp
Pricey ice cream but nice size single scoop & good waffle cones. Both times I've been, they were out of brownies! (Hint: if you run out that often, maybe you should make more?!?)

Josmari L.

Yelp
The service here is always excellent, and have very unique flavors. There is plenty of street parking, so it's easy to get there. This place has one of my favorite Ice Creams, which is Taro. It's perfect as it feels refreshing, very creamy, and is not too sweet. I also tried cookie dough and chocolate chips. The cookie dough and chocolate chips felt very similar in flavor, but the chocolate chips were a little bit too hard to enjoy.

Yelp
First time trying Grand Ole Creamery in St. Paul. They have two entrances, one for their pizza and the other for their ice cream. They have so many flavors to choose from and my favorite was the waffle bowls that you don't see at a lot of places. Such a fun vibe and can't wait to go back and try their pizza! What I ordered: Taro & strawberry ice cream with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles in a waffle cone

Tiffany W.

Yelp
Your Saint Paul staple ice cream parlor serving ice cream, shakes, malts, banana splits, and more. Located off the historic Grand Avenue, you will find the line out the door in the summer months (don't let that stop you as it moves quick) and the aroma of waffle cones will keep you coming back for more. The winter of 2024 was a beauty with temps in the 40's and my family enjoyed many more ice cream treats this season. My favorite flavors are the chocolate peanut butter, birthday cake and cookie monster. As of lately, I have enjoyed getting my ice cream blended into a shake. If you have a dog, they have small frosty cups located in the freezer section which is fun because many times you get whip cream only and this one keeps the dogs occupied for a bit. While there are a few small indoor tables, many folks eat outside during the warmer months or grab it to go in the winter. No matter how you choose to dine, you won't be disappointed. Even Barack Obama tried this place when he was in town and you'll find his photo on the wall. Enjoy!

Brittany R.

Yelp
Overpriced and not worth it. Didn't have much flavor and dark inside. The waffle cones had a bad taste. Do not recommend.

Courtney D L.

Yelp
Walked here on a hot day with my daughter. We had some scoops in a bowl. I had the Cookie Monster and my daughter had chocolate brownie with hot fudge. Generous portions as usual. Friendly staff. I knocked it down 1 star because they got rid of their pizza. RIP. I miss the cheese bread. So sad. Ice cream was still fantastic!

Erin M.

Yelp
Everyone goes to Grand for the ice cream, but the pizza is amazing and totally overlooked. They have a 2 slice and a drink deal for under $10. The slices are huge and you can choose up to 2 topping on each slice. Pizza is new York style. They use fresh ingredients and have a good selection of toppings. We usually eat one slice there and save the other for later to save room for ice cream. The pizza side is usually much quieter than the ice cream side. They have long tables to accommodate larger groups of people. When the weather is nice we sit outside and people watch. It's a great spot for a date night or a family night.

Sherry S.

Yelp
The service here is fast, friendly, and efficient. There are tables both inside and out which is nice. The prices are a tad high, but the ice cream servings are enormous, really a bit too large. On our recent visit I tried a split single of the peach and the key lime pie on a standard sugar cone. This wound up being 4 fairly large scoops of ice cream pushed on to a sugar cone. For my taste too much ice cream. Really I know, who says too much to ice cream? I'm very glad I didn't order 2 scoops. The ice cream texture is rich and creamy, but really a bit bland. The peach had large chunks of peaches but was so sweet and had enough vanilla in it that the flavor or the peaches just didn't shine through. The key lime lacked any tartness that you would expect at all. The lime flavor seemed to come only from peel and not from any lime juice.

Suzie R.

Yelp
I scream, you scream -- we all want ice cream. Stumbled upon this place on new years eve...likely the only ice cream shop open on nye in the St Paul area. Thankfully! Yay! We orders a two scoop cup of chocolate and vanilla with sprinkles and a taro hot fudge sundae. It's nice they have a handful of new crazy flavors alongside staples like chocolate and vanilla. I also loved that they label gluten free!!! THANK YOU! The ice cream was just alright - hot fudge not so much/wasn't hot and just didn't taste that great. The taro had ice chips which means it probably isn't the freshest and has freezer burn. We'll see if I try it again in the new year.

Susan A.

Yelp
This place is great. They make their own waffle cones. Pro tip - get the kids size. They give you a malted milk ball on top of your ice cream and it is quite a generous serving. Lots of flavor options and seasonal ones as well. My daughter really wanted the peach flavor, which they were out of, but mango was a great substitute. I loved that the mocha chip was loaded with chips. The cookie dough is also a solid choice. Don't be deterred by the line as it moves quickly. Service is really friendly and has an old time atmosphere.

Laurita L.

Yelp
So good. A must when you're in the area. I had the coconut chocolate chip and my daughter had the lychee. Portions are generous.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Great spot for ice cream!! There are so many flavor options and the waffle cones are AMAZING (and all made on site)! I got the Cookie Monster in a kids waffle and it was HUGE. Definitely could share between two people if you're going for dessert.

Ralph M.

Yelp
Last Sunday evening called for some good 'za and I used it as an excuse to try some NY Style from another St Paul landmark. This family owned joint has been slingin some of the best gourmet ice cream in St Paul for 35 years making it the first and longest standing in the Twin Cities. 10 years ago they decided to add New York style pizza to their venture. Plus they offer their own local delivery so you can enjoy these pies plus their delicious ice cream when you just want to stay in. What we ordered: 3 Little Pigs ~ house made tomato sauce, homemade crumbly Italian sausage, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, fresh mozzarella. **this is great NY style and the pie is massive. The edge of the crust has a great crunch to it, which was a departure from the chewy I'm used to, but I'm into it. Generous amount of toppings and I really enjoyed the spice to the sausage.**

Sam I.

Yelp
One of the BEST places to get ice cream me,my wife, and my daughter love this place there ice cream tastes amazing .

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Ice cream portions are huge even for a single scoop! Their homemade waffle cone is big as well and compliments the ice cream. If you like coffee then I would definitely suggest the coffee break!

Lilianna S.

Yelp
Saw a video of the best ice cream in the Twin Cities so we decided to go try Grand Ole Creamery. When you walk in the smell of the waffle cone makes you think you're going to pig out, but you never expect it to taste like a regular ice cream.

Rachel B.

Yelp
Really love the waffle bowl, it's fresh and crispy, definitely delicious! Got many favors in one of the 5 scoops bowl. I don't really remember what I had, but maybe the picture can tell ...

El Hombre G.

Yelp
We ordered cones and a sundae at 9:40, they close at 10:00, one of us is finishing the last of the sundae at 10:05 and the girl says "we really need you to leave because we're closed so we can finish up". It's traditional to let customers finish their food before kicking them out, it's not like we were hanging out over empty dishes at 10:30. Never going back.

Richard B.

Yelp
Love the ice cream, had the praline oreo and the coffee Oreo, definitely like to try new flavors. Like how they make the cones right there, fresh.

Luke G.

Yelp
I had the strawberry ice cream in a waffle cone. The strawberry ice cream was fresh, and wasn't intensely 'sugary'. It was fine. The waffle cone was exemplary. I am one of those guys that eat the ice cream, and disposes of the cone... this was one of the better waffle cones I've ever had. It was light and airy. Something really easy to bite into and crumble right at your teeth marks. Crunchy, and paradoxically soft, but not soggy. I ate every last bit. Expensive, but somewhat expected when ordering ice cream in Minneapolis or St. Paul. Lastly... I enjoyed the whopper on top.

K F.

Yelp
Traditional pizza by the slice or full pie. The single slice plus salad comes with a huge, delicious Italian salad.

Missi V.

Yelp
Always amazing unfortunately I forgot to take a pic before inhaling my 2 scoops of eggnog ice cream in a waffle cone. We also got a classic cheese pizza and pepperoni. Let me tell you the cheese pull is real with these pies. I love it so much. I hope you guys enjoy here as much as I do!

Pa V.

Yelp
As a St. Paul native- I wanted to like this place! The lines are usually out the door and the menu is huge but honestly- it's just another local ice cream shop with over priced ice cream-my total was $7 and I didn't even get the waffle cone! I got a split scoop and both flavors were too sweet. Service was a bit rude and definitely not friendly- the teenager who helped me seemed annoyed when I wanted to sample the Cookie Monster before getting it. For those who was wondering- it tastes like marshmallow. I recommend sharing a single with someone. I've never had the pizza here but 99% of the people I know who had it- does not recommend it at all.

Kristine J.

Yelp
Best ice cream I've ever had! Cookie Monster is the best flavor but they have many to choose from. One scoop is like the size of 3!!!!

Gloria Z.

Yelp
I went hoping for a scoop of their unique Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough which used to be actually flavored like cookie dough. It was one of my favorites, but Now they've changed it to the same plain vanilla with lumps of dough that you can buy in any store. So instead I got the Praline Pecan, which should have generous swirls of Carmel with the candied pecans. But nope, just plain vanilla with a few pecans in it. ugh. So disappointing. Nothing about their flavors are special anymore. They've changed a lot. :(

Tisha B.

Yelp
Stop in for some fantastic pizza have a chat with Greg the owner and pop in next door for some of the best ice cream in grand Avenue! You won't be disappointed on either adventure. Both just what ya need to get you through!

John M.

Yelp
Grand Old Creamery, now just to be clear, I'm reviewing the ice-cream place, not pizza. First things first, this place is always busy all the time. Expect to wait close to 15 mins just for ice-cream. Don't be alarmed by the wait time though because everyone in line knows what's up and what's up is that the Grand Old Creamery has great ice-cream. The flavors rotate based on supply however they always have the classic's. I'm talking Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cookie Dough, Salted Carmel, Cheesecake and that's NOT all folks, there are plenty more. One of the coolest things about GOC is that they make for waffle cones right in front of you. In my mind the waffle cones are so good that they will always be worth the extra money. And about the money. The prices would make even Jordan Belford (the wolf of wall street) cringe but they are much more bearable when you see the portion sizes. If you order 1 scoop you get close to 2.5 scoops. I must say that the name fits this place. Grand. Also Obama was there. Not joking they have a picture of him hung up on the wall.

Gaby R.

Yelp
Good spot for ice cream! Service was quick and staff were friendly. Will come back again.

Harrison G.

Yelp
Best ice cream spot in the Twin Cities! I am from out of town and my debit card wasn't working so the manager just put my order on the house. Great customer service and amazing ice cream!

Shamim R.

Yelp
If you want good old fashioned and deliciously creamy ice cream. This is the place you need to go to. The freshly made waffle cones and bowls will capture your heart with their heady sweet smell and paired with the not too sweet ice cream it's perfect.

Alejandra B.

Yelp
The ice cream here is ok (I only get the birthday cake flavor). I have decided to no longer support this business after seeing how the employees mistreated a person asking for money near the location.

Ashley Q.

Yelp
I love this place! Our favorites are Apple Strudel (seasonal), Pralines and Cream, Strawberry, Black Hill Gold and North Country Crunch! But you really cant go wrong with what you choose. They even have icecream for your dog!

Meghann S.

Yelp
The best ice cream place in all of Minnesota hands down!! The prices may seem steep at first, but it's inclusive of tax and the sizes you get are GINORMOUS. All flavors are amazing and you can of course test them all. Cookie monster never fails for me! You will not be disappointed here

Mahva J.

Yelp
Yum! My beau hadn't been here yet, and I told him that this was the best place for ice cream. He got the raspberry lemon sorbet, and I got the lime. He ended up liking mine better, yet enjoyed his, too. One of the things I love about GOC's citrus sorbets is the fact that they're not tart. They are a perfect balance of sweet, fruity, and tangy. We will be back when he has his lactose pills so that he can have some ice cream.

Xia Y.

Yelp
If the name doesn't speak for it self already, this is a great place to grab some sweet, yummy ice cream. I am a huge fan of taro so I had the taro flavored ice cream, it was phenomenal. You can either get the ice cream in a cup (kids or reg size) or in a waffle cone. Be aware that the line can get extremely long--as in out the door and down the block.

Bob A.

Yelp
I've never not had an awesome time at Grande Ole Creamery. I know they have pizza here as well, but I've never had it because, see, the thing to do is go have a meal at Punch Pizza, then cross the street to have your dessert here. You will have many free samples. You will order scoops in bowls or cones, and get a heaping serving that satisfies you. But you will also like some of the other flavors you sample, so you will return sometime to experience them in more generous portions. This is what will happen. Do not fight it. Look in your heart. You know it to be true. So, yeah, great ice cream place.

Kathy M.

Yelp
This is definitely my favorite ice cream shop in the Twin Cities. It's not uncommon to have to wait in a line out the door, but it's worth it. There are over 20 flavors to pick from - everything from your standard Strawberry or Chocolate to the Black Hills Gold! I usually sample a couple of flavors before deciding on my usual... The Black Hills Gold is like a cookies and cream with caramel and nuts. It's just delicious! It's hard to eat any other ice cream after Grand Ole Creamery ice cream because everything else starts to taste watered down. It's great in the summer, but it tastes just as good in the winter as well!

Sam S.

Yelp
My wife and I went to the pizzeria side many Sundays in a row. Until one day the kids running it didn't seem to care and brought us supposedly hot sandwiches cold and uncooked. We attempted to email to obtain a refund but got no reply. Then we went on May 1. I didn't want to go but we decided they could handle ice cream. As we walked in the employees shared that they had no waffle cones. Although many were visible in the front window. When we made our order for a banana split the young man helping us went to the back to check for bananas but every other employee stated they were up front in a cabinet. Was again a less than stellar experience. I remember better times at this establishment.

Ted G.

Yelp
Located on amongst the classic grand avenue neighborhood, this little shop located next to the Indian house has the best ice cream in all of Saint Paul. Of course during the summer months you can expect to wait in line, they do have a small dine in area and some tables along the sidewalk. The wait is worth it once you taste one of the many flavors of this home made ice cream. They do offer pizza as well, but they are known for their ice cream obviously. This is a nice stop for those looking to get aquatinted with the historical district of Saint Paul.

Tory S.

Yelp
The intoxicating smell of freshly pressed waffle cones hits you as soon as you walk in the door! It's impossible to resist. This fun unique ice cream parlor is one not to miss! Immediately brought back memories of a trip to Stockholm where the scent of waffle cones permeates the streets. Mickey ordered a giant hot fudge sundae called "the chipper" and he couldn't stop eating it! I had a single scoop of "winter wonderland", a peppermint flavor, in one of their homemade cones. Can't wait to come back again!

Mikayla K.

Yelp
Great ice cream and great pizza! Their ice cream is great, and their homemade waffle cones taste as good as they smell. During the summer, expect a wait. Their three little pigs pizza is AMAZING, and heats up well too. I avoid ordering by the slice in the store as I found that pizza is never as fresh.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
A good old fashioned ice cream parlour attached to a pizza joint?! Sign me up! As soon as you walk through the doors, you get mesmerized by the aroma of freshly made waffle cones (very cleverly stationed right by the doors). Walk a little further and you reach your full selection which has your sorbets to your chocolates to your birthday cake and everything in between. If you're not feeling the sweet, walk right past on through to the savory pizza counter. Haven't tried this yet though, so stay tuned!

Paul D.

Yelp
Went to the como zoo and wanted ice cream on the way home. Found this place on Grand Ave and would say it was a score. Would certainly go back again if in the area.

Charlie P.

Yelp
The portion sizes are decent. The in-person wait times are horrendous. Even with a seemingly full staff, I waited over 20+ minutes for a salad. I can walk into Crisp n Green and be in and out in less than 5 minutes.
