Is Black Lotus Brewing Company in Clawson For Sale? - Eater Detroit

"Black Lotus Brewing Company appears to be hunting for a new owner. The popular Clawson-based brewery posted a listing to Facebook in late-August inviting inquiries for the sale of an unnamed “award-winning” Oakland County brewpub established in 2006. The listing on BizBuySell through real estate firm Zak & Associates advertises “a well located, very popular brewery” with a seven-barrel brewing capacity for $450,000. The brewery’s gross revenue is listed as $1,400,000 with a rental payment of $7,900 per month. The lease on the 5,000-square-foot building is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2019. Management for Black Lotus did not respond to multiple requests for comment and a realtor representing the unidentified brewery declined to disclose any information regarding the client, stating that the owner’s desire for a confidential sale. However, people with knowledge of the sale confirm that the brewpub in question is Black Lotus. The reasons for the sale weren’t immediately available. Black Lotus holds a Class C liquor license as well as a brew pub license and a specially designated merchant license. However, Michigan Liquor Licensing Commision confirm that the treasury has a levy against the business for sales tax. Black Lotus was founded in September 2006 by partners Mark Harper, Michael Allan, and Jodi Allan during a time when Clawson’s downtown area was in the midst of an economic downturn. The brewery became a popular spot for live music, beer, and pub food as the surrounding district attracted new restaurants, bars, and businesses. While the brewery may be up for grabs, it’s continuing to operate with regular hours and a full menu." - Brenna Houck

First time back in almost a year. We sat at the bar and the server was nice. The tablet to use for food and beverage menus was not the easiest thing to use. You had to tap on menu item to see description and price and then go back to see a different item. It was time consuming since we wanted to explore the menu items. We ordered a smash burger well done and the ham and cheese sandwich. The burger was medium done. A lot of bread too. The French fries luke warm. The ham was small with 2 pieces of ham and appeared to be one piece of cheese. Since our server asked, I told him I couldn't eat the burger. The manager asked what she could do and I asked for the meal to be taken off. She didn't want to take it off and I didn't insist but she took my full plate and decided to deduct my meal. I appreciate that since I didn't have chance to eat the pickle. The food prices are higher priced too.

You need to walk in to the middle of the restaurant to the hostess, then they will take you to the table (I don’t find this very practical nor like it, it’s kinda confusing when you go there for the first time); it took like 5 min for them to take us to the table and the table was wet and kinda sticky. The waiter arrived arrived and gave us the menu (old and dirty, some stains on it) also confusing that the menu doesn’t show the available drinks. At the end we ordered a beer flight and a firecracker hamburger with habanero cheese (zero spicy but we’re Mexican 🇲🇽) the dish includes french fries; the hamburger was good but I think it would be better with more sauce on it and more spicy 🌶️. The flight was good except for the 313 beer, I didn’t like it at all.

Google
Great beer selections, complimented by great service and food. Had the GRB grinder and it was excellent. Right, amount of meat, peppers and onions, but a little greasy. Lots of room at the bar to enjoy beer or cocktails. Both bartenders were very attentive!

Popped in here on a whim for some beer on a really hot day. Unfortunately, the air conditioning wasn't on. Had the smash burger, curds, veggie of the day (grilled asparagus), and a couple IPAs. The burger was decent, surprisingly good bun for a bar burger. IPAs definitely hit on a hot day and weren't overly hoppy. Bartender was very nice and attentive. Staff seemed great overall despite the heat. Only thing was the price of the curds were $16. Overpriced IMO. About $100 for two people with one app, 3 beers, 1 margarita, one burger, one soup, and one salad before tip.

We ordered the fish tacos and fish and chips. Do not recommend. Arrived less than hot and the fish was not flavorful. On the other hand, the Wisconsin Cheese curds were VERY good and an extremely generous portion. The service was pleasant but very slow considering the restaurant was not crowded. One housekeeping item…. We had a table next to us that had not been cleaned of the dishes and it was still not bussed by the time we left an hour later. I’ve never seen that in a restaurant before. I’m not sure I would try the restaurant again.

Google
We tried Grand River Brewery for the first time. We had a wonderful server. Overall, we had a great experience, but the polish fried pickles stole the show.

Google
We really wanted to like this restaurant. It's in a great spot in the heart of downtown clawson and we like to support local businesses. We first tried their food by ordering carry out through doordash. I got the fish and chips. Worse fries I've had in a long time and fish was barely passible, but we figured it was probably because it was delivered so we decided to dine in give them another try. The host was in a bad mood and didn't say a word to me, but the server was very friendly. We got the reuben fritters to start; really tasty & would def recommend. Then we ordered the Jaegerschnitzel and the Mac and cheese heart attack style. The schnitzel and spaetzle were mid at best. The Mac and cheese was mid too, but the pork on top was just about inedible. It all just felt like a let down and very unsatisfying.

Google
It's a brewery/ restaurant to be perfectly honest it's average as far as food goes not sure about drinks but the service was good and it wasn't very busy when we went!

Yelp
The service at Grand River was good, the woman that greeted us was kind and knowledgeable about the menu, and our server was good. We sat on the patio and they had decent seating, there is only about a foot of space between the tables on either side. To start we got the tempura asparagus; the combination of flavors was delicious I have to say. The batter was lacking, "it looked like there was a national shortage on tempura batter" in my bfs words, and asparagus. The app was $14ish and came with 6 or 7 stalks of asparagus- a ripoff. I ordered the BBQ dinner and it was tasty, the pulled pork was tender, the mac and cheese was fire and the pickles and cornbread were nice compliments. My boyfriend ordered the ribeye medium rare and it was...interesting. It was juicy but still somewhat tough. The menu said it was seared, but the color on the inside and out looked like it was almost boiled(???) He rated it a 6/10. The side vegetables were decent, the mashed potatoes were anticlimactic. Overall I would give it 3.5 out of 5 stars (if you count in the pineapple margs we ordered), the service was decent and the food is good depending on what you get.

Yelp
This is the former Black Lotus space. There is a nearby city parking lot, but there is also a nearby lot that tows, use caution. This is an outpost of the other Grand River locations, and they have many of the usual beer, plus some new ones. Inside they have brightened up what the prior businesses used, more light and more (maybe?) clean looking. Staff was nice, stools were okay to sit in, good variety of beer to try. It was loud on a Saturday mid day, from groups in the adjoining dining area brunching. I hope this business is able to make a success of the location.

Yelp
We went to dinner at this restaurant last night. I now understand why the other Yelp elites have written about the service and atmosphere instead of the food. I'll start with the food. My boyfriend and I shared a slab of ribs last night, so I can't base all the food on this one meal, but this was our experience. The ribs were delicious. They were fall-off-the-bone tender, and the smoky flavor was outstanding. When they initially came out, they were strangely cold, so our super friendly waitress brought another slab out to us. The second slab was medium hot from a temperature standpoint, but a HUGE improvement from where we started. The fries were hot and fine. The coleslaw was the vinegar-style instead of the creamy kind, and I liked it. Sadly, the cornbread was a disappointment--overly dry and pretty flavorless. So, a mixed bag on the food this trip. As I mentioned, I really liked our waitress. From an ambiance standpoint, the place is a bar. There were 2 tables with really loud, rowdy groups, so if your jam is a quieter location, this might not be the location depending on the day's clientele.

Yelp
Poor food... Went for a family birthday celebration on a Thursday around 7 pm. Tiny little slider hamburger for $17 USD. I would not mind if it was good... Came out luke warm and all dried out. I substituted Mack and cheese for my french fries the small side bowl (about 6 - 7 ounces) came out cool maybe Luke warm on the bottom. I also ordered a side salad which I thought would be served somewhere between the appetizers and my cold burger, however, they were served at the same time. I requested no cucumbers in my salad and they omitted everything and served me lettuce in a bowl. I sent it back. The cheese curds appetizer was good. The pretzel appetizer was good. My sister ordered hers with the fries and they were hard and stale as if they made them for lunch and served them for dinner. I ordered a margarita on the rocks and was served 7 oz of ice and 3 oz of drink in a 10 ounce highball glass. Very poor. Our bill for 10 was over $400 with tip and some did not order entries. I will never return for food and drinks. Probably just a good place to get a beer and maybe appetizers.

Yelp
Underwhelming experience. Over priced food and drinks. Bloody Mary's had nothing in it. We had to ask for olives. The bartender brought me a skewer with 4 on there but ignored my friend who also ordered a bloody Mary. Entree salads were tiny. While there was a decent amount of grilled chicken in my Cobb salad it was dry and tasteless. After our bartender (curly haired lady) rolled her eyes at us we cashed out, left, and went to the Royal Inn where we got treated much better. Unless you're here for the craft beer skip this place and go anywhere else. It's $80 we will never get back. Such is life.

Yelp
First time visit and the restaurant is delightful. Very nice staff. I just ate so I ordered the homemade onion rings which are one of my favorite food groups. These onion rings are thin and battered which were good but greasy because of the thinness. I love the crushed ice for my water! Beer selection is very good. The space is warm and comfortable. I am definitely coming back with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Food, beer and service was excellent. The major problem is it is extremely expensive. I will only go back for the beer. A sandwich for $19 is too much.

Yelp
We walked in at the corner of 14 and main and there was a sign to walk to the back to get sat. There was not a wait on a Friday night around 9pm and we got sat immediately. The restaurant looked very clean which is always a plus. One thing I liked is they have the little nugget ice. My husband had a 313 beer and a pomegranate lemon drop. He said both were great. We liked the cheese curds but they were a bit salty. The batter is light but they also felt so heavy because they were so greasy. I was shocked by how big the portion was. It was too many for two people. I ordered steak and frites. I think it's weird that they don't cut it like how it is served everywhere else but it was good. Nothing mind blowing but decent. I liked the chimichurri but the zip sauce was too runny. My husband had the Santa Fe wrap and rated it a 4/10. He said it just didn't taste good and it was cold. Not sure if it was supposed to be warm or not. He did say he saw it sitting in the window for a while since we could see inside the kitchen. I liked the condiments the most. We enjoyed the hot honey, spicy ranch and regular ranch. We wanted to try something new last night and ended up here. I personally don't think I would go back. Everything was just mediocre to us. I think I could make it all better at home.

Yelp
This is the third different establishment I've been to in this location, but I think this one has a chance to do well. We went with some friends on a Friday night and the place was hopping. We started our meal by sharing the Bavarian Pretzels, which were hot, soft and tasty! For our main meal, my wife and I split the Phatty Melt and the Award Winning Mac N Cheese. I love a good patty melt - this one was good, but I have had better. The Mac N Cheese, on the other hand, was outstanding. The caramelized onions and breadcrumbs made it really unique.

Yelp
GREAT SPOT! The food was top of the line, the service by Zach was top notch and the decor was a nice touch. Overall, we will be back. Finally a spot in this venue that will stick!

Yelp
Service was great! Beers were good. The atmosphere is really nice!! For sure, go hang out and have a drink! Food was....for what you get and how much it cost, I was very underwhelmed. We had the fried pickles as an app. They were not bad. They were fried pickles chips, you can't really ruin them. Crisp and tangy. Looking at the menu, I could not justify ordering some of the other apps. $14 for poutine? No, I can't bring myself to pay that much. I ordered the Cobb Salad. $18. Chicken was generous portion, but it was very over cooked, and I couldn't tell if it was supposed to be served chilled or warm because it wasn't very consistent throughout. Avocado pieces were not even close to being ripe. I couldn't stick my fork in them. The bacon pieces were under cooked and all fatty. Then it was all mounded in a tiny bowl, so the moment you attempted to mix the salad or take a bite, it spilled all over. I honestly don't even remember what my husband had, it was a burger of some sort, also at $18. He ate it, and it looked ok, but it wasn't anything we would go back for. I have spent $18+ on salads and burgers before, and I will again, but they were well made and worth the price. Again, cool vibes and great place to hang for drinks, but the food was not worth the money.

Yelp
So happy that a brewery is back in this location. The beer is excellent, but the variety could be better for a brew pub. The food was very good for what we had. We sat at the bar and tried the fried pickle slices, excellent, the pretzel which was a soft pretzel, with the cheese dip. The ambiance is nice, clean modern rustic decor. It fills up quickly which is a good sign too, so get here early or just wait if you have to. Will definitely be back!

Larry H.

Yelp
Food was just Okay but pricey , service was good. But my biggest complaint is that I came down with Covid shortly after eating there! Cant say for sure that I caught it there BUT!! Will never go Back!

Nicolas M.

Yelp
Service is hit and miss on who you get, I've been many times where the server was attentive and friendly. Where as other times I've walked out because no one acknowledged we were at the bar with only two people sitting there, not even a "I'll be right with you". I asked for a cup for the social district rules(with the sticker), they said uhh I don't know about any of that, I guess I could go ask someone, then proceeds to walk away, I go find another person and knew exactly what I was talking about. Expect to be there around 2 hours since the food comes out slow, though it is pretty good but expensive for what it is. The beer is great, a few rotating taps among their flagship. Service is key though, it can have the most amazing food but when you have poor service I don't care for returning.

Yelp
Packed on a cold Saturday night, the wait was about 35 minutes for a table. Fun busy atmosphere. We ordered the Steak Frites and Fish & Chips (walleye version). Tried to order the Jaegerschnizel but they were out. Our beer choices were the Buffalo white IPA & Blanc Stare, which were good. The food was hot & well presented. They were very busy so service was a bit slow--understaffed maybe? Back to the food. Blah? Under-seasoned? Hot fries should always taste so darn good, but just blah, kind of tasteless. Everything we ate was 'meh'. Steak frites should be sliced & menu described as covered with chimichurri, but that was on the side. We were generally unimpressed. The space inside has changed quite a bit since the Black Lotus, which is good. Nice long bar, and the adjoining space is now a nice dining room. The kitchen just isn't hitting it. Maybe they need to season the food?? We'll try again, but mostly it's just not a place where you're going to say 'let's go back and get the --fill in the blank. Like I said, we were quite unimpressed. And LOUD, but maybe it was just the larger groups there tonight. We'll see....

Yelp
Overall, we give our experience a 7/10. We had the rocky balboa pizza and the Nashville hot chicken. The pizza sauce had good flavor and the toppings were plentiful, we thought the pizza could have been cooked longer because it was kind of soft and soggy. The Nashville hot chicken was perfectly crispy, however, we did not taste any Nashville hot seasoning. So the chicken was kind of bland. We would give this place another shot though. Also, I appreciate that our server was very honest when we asked about dishes that he recommended.

Yelp
onight we went to try out the new Grand River Brewery in Clawson for dinner and I haven't been this impressed by a new restaurant in years!! All the food is farm to table and so fresh! The atmosphere is very nice and cozy and we even had a booth with a window into the kitchen to see what happens behind the scenes. My daughter and I both started with a cup of homemade soup-I had the whitefish chowder and Angela had the tomato bisque...seasoned perfectly!! Then she ordered the Seasonal Mac & Cheese that includes mushrooms and spinach in the most delicious Beshamel sauce you can imagine!! I went with the Poutine made with fries, homemade ale gravy, cheese curds and pulled pork - you could drink that gravy from a cup...it was that good! I will definitely be making it back here as often as possible. Treat yourself and try it out!

Yelp
I went for their soft opening, and was able to try a nice flight of beers. It wasn't very busy and the bartender was extremely knowledgeable, she gave me all the information I asked for and then gave me a couple recommendations. Jory is very good at her job, and was a delight to talk with. She gave me lots of information about the company as well as both the drink and food menus. The atmosphere was very comfortable and very light. I wish this new place all the best in clawson and hope that they stick around for a while.

Ann N.

Yelp
Husband and I ordered the chicken nachos. Sat at the bar had a drink and we just wanted to share a quick bite to eat. Ha! What a joke! We basically got a plate of chips with burn cheese! I told him we just paid $20.00 for a 1/2 bag of chips! So disappointing.
google avatar

Alexis H.

Yelp
Great vibe, good beer, solid menu and cool mix of people. Enjoyed the laid back but still classier atmosphere of this brewery. Spacious, clean, good service! Start with a flight of beers to get a feel for your taste. Menu has a good selection of appetizers and meals.

Mike R.

Yelp
Another very good visit to GRB. Food was great. Loved the Jagerschnitzel! And the Hot Honey Chicken pizza too. Beer as always was great!

Yelp
2= could've been better and that sums it up. 9 of us came for dinner with a reservation and got seated promptly. Service was challenging however. The first lady to arrive ordered a beer and after everyone else ordered and drinks served, including waters, she was left high and dry. Finally got the waitress back who said - 'Oh yea, I've been busy, I haven't checked to see if it's in the window'. Yikes. At least one person didn't get a water glass and we ran out of water and had to ask for more. I was disappointed to find out they didn't have a Non-alcoholic beer - hello Dry January and non-drinkers. I ordered a blackberry lemonade mocktail. Super heavy on the crushed ice. I saw all the drinks were like that. Not getting much liquid in the glass for sure, I hate that. I sipped baby sips to make it last, at $5 for a non-alcohol drink, not cool. Ok on to food. We ordered apps, which I think everyone liked. I got the Rueben fritters, (4 for $12), they were good, the sauerkraut tasted just like sauerkraut - couldn't detect bacon or anything different. I ordered the whitefish chowder - it was AWFUL. Something was quite wrong with the flavor. Also, super spicy. And - the waitress didn't bring spoons - when asked about spoons she said they were being washed. Well we waited (my friend had chili) and waited, and finally resorted to forks. My friend took 1 bite of her chili and almost choked. She said it was too hot/spicy to eat. When the waitress came back with our spoons we both sent back our soup and chili. She offered the tomato bisque instead - we said ok as long as it wasn't spicy. It was tasty - I asked for some crackers - well those showed up after I was done with my soup. Timing was definitely a problem for our waitress. The person next to me had a wrap of some kind that they said was a bit too spicy also. The chef had a heavy spice hand last night. Unsure if I'll try again - I thought the price point for all of the food was above average expensive and no NA Beers is a bummer. Service needs a bit of help.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
If skimpy portions, flavorless, over priced food is your thing then this place is for you. Service was slow and the staff seemed like they were bothered to be serving the patrons, especially the curly haired female bartender. I'll never go back, Renshaws or the Royal Inn are closer and much better places for food, service, and prices. Those places might not look as fancy on the inside but they are both 100x better value.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
Grand River Brewery is certainly a welcomed addition to the neighborhood - the service both times has been great and everything was timely. They serve their own beers, and I really enjoyed the Pumpkin Ale that I got. We ordered the fried chicken our first time, and the BBQ platter and burger the second time. The platter had a huge piece of brisket that was really good, certainly worth the money. The burger was solid, a bit overdone as I ordered medium, and it was well done, but the flavor was good. We ate in the main dining room both times, and I struggled to hear the person sitting across from me because it was so loud, so they need to do something about the sound in that room. I hope this place succeeds as there have been several restaurants in that spot that haven't, but there is certainly some room to improve food and volume wise.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Great place terrific food. New and happening. Definitely a great place for food, family, and fun. Always was taken care of by employees great service

colleen c.

Yelp
Beer was good. Fries were soggy and raw and ordered another side crispy-no one asked why I would order a side of fries when I had an entire order of fries uneaten. Bartender doesn't like the beer or food there so not sure why he even works there. Place is okay, but why bother when they don't.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
A lot of room for improvement. Had a reservation and we were sat right away. Server wasn't that knowledgeable about the beers. Ordered the fries as an appetizer because it sounded interesting. It was ok, but $16 is a lot for a small basket of fries. We ordered the steak and frites and the brisket sandwich. The steak was cooked perfectly, but was so overly salty I couldn't finish it.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
This is one of the best places I've been to in a long time! The food, service and atmosphere were all amazing! I recommend checking out the brunch menu. We came another time for lunch and drinks, again everything was delicious. Great new place in the area. All of the staff members seem to genuinely like working here, customer service was awesome!

Kris M.

Yelp
Went to Grand River Brewery last week. Nice place and good beer however a few items to clean up. I had smoked chicken wings. All were burnt and served burnt side down it what appeared as an attempt to hide the error. Told the waiter they were not edible. Expected to hear right away let me talk to the manager or let me get you another order done right. Got neither response. When the bill came no mention of the wings. I asked if he was going to do anything about the burnt wings. Said he'd talk to the manager. A little later a new bill was brought minus the wings. Maybe too old school but I never saw the manager. I expected to see him or her about 30 seconds after telling them the wings weren't edible.

Yelp
The food is pretty mid I don't recommend the Reuben anything the Brussels sprouts were probably the best thing there. The hamburgers are pretty well done as well as the steak. When I order. I usually have a harder order and they got it right.Their food takes forever and I mean forever to come out it was pretty good.the server was pretty good.it took about 10 years to get a to go box but that was the only negative.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place but...Overpriced everything and not very good. Felt a little off the next day which could be from not cleaning their lines or the craft beer. My wife felt off too. Waitstaff was meh. Really noisy as well. Won't be back.

Andrew S.

Yelp
Grand river you continue to disappoint. I ordered online and came when the time said I waited an extra 30 + minutes for my food. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant and I am done giving y'all chances

Yelp
Went here on a Thursday night and the place had a lot of people in it, always a good sign. Decor was nice and comfortable. Greeted and seated immediately by a very nice young lady who also ended up being our waitress. I asked about an NA beer, they had none. No biggie, I stuck with water. My wife had a margarita, which she said tasted like it had no booze in it. I tasted it, she was right. We then ordered some cheese curds, they were great! I had the walleye fish and chips which had 3 SMALL pieces of fish and cold fries. The fish pieces looked like they were cut in half they were so small. They tasted great, and I don't normally complain about portion sizes, but this was ridiculous. My wife's salad was OK. We split a piece of carrot cake for dessert which tasted dry and crusty like it had been out for a while. I'm thinking about changing my review to 2 stars as I write this, but it's a new place so I'll give em 3. I don't think we will be back. Could this end up being another failed restaurant at this location?

Yelp
Rachel was amazing! Drinks were great! I had the brisket steak and cheese my husband had the jaegerschnizel both delicious as were the appetizers of poutine and Reuben croquettes. Looking forward to visiting again soon.

Matt H.

Yelp
The atmosphere was super cool, reminded me of the old Pumachug. The beers/ciders that we ordered were really good as well. The food was so-so unfortunately. The fried pickles were good, slightly undercooked and floppy. My Fiancées margarita pizza was plain. No tomatoes or basil, everything that makes a margarita pizza! The server did recognize it and brought a bowl of toppings for her to put on. The dough was undercooked however and difficult for her to eat. As a big BBQ guy, the ribs were probably the worst part of dinner. They were really tough and not fall off the bone. Very little to no smoke flavor, and a TON of BBQ sauce to make up for it. Overall it's a cool little spot that I hope does well. We won't be getting the same items off the menu, however.

Matt R.

Yelp
This place is so sub par. First off, the chef didn't show up, and the service was very ill attended. Charging $17 for a burger that is thin and tasteless. The fries had a gray, greenish hue to them, and were saltier than the Mediterranean Sea. $11 for brussel sprouts that were deep fried, and sitting in a pool of oil. We won't be back :(

Yelp
Brooke was our server and she was fantastic. Very friendly, great service, and the walleye fish and chips were great.

Yelp
What a great place to grab food! Their hamburgers are delicious! Philly cheesesteak and Classic burger were great! Brioche buns are perfect Sweet potato fries were tasty and the hot sauce was just on point! Not too spicy but just good as it should be! You can see the kitchen through the glass wall and the pizza oven looks great! Something to try for the next time! Will be coming back for more. Very chill laidback place, cool atmosphere, stylish interior, arcade games and friendly people working here!

Yelp
Tried this "hot and new" restaurant, which is the Detroit area location of an establishment with locations in Jackson and Marshall.. We were not overwhelmed. First, the service: our server tried her best to deliver the food promptly, but was hampered by the slow kitchen service and the general lack of staff. We were accompanied by 2 friends who don't partake in alcohol, which caused us to wonder why they had suggested a bar. I ordered a porter that - like other brews at the restaurant - was brewed by them at their Jackson location. It was adequate. One of the co-diners ordered pizza, while I ordered the seasonal Mac & Cheese. We tried each other's entrees. I found my mac&cheese to be quite nice. The pizza was another matter. First, the pizza arrived about 25 minutes after my entree. The server apologized, saying that the pizza ovens were "too small." I would think that by the time you opened your third location, you would get the oven size right. The pizza was also underdone in spots, almost burnt in others. The other 2 co-diners got the blackened salmon and beans. They asked for their beans not to be cooked in bacon fat, but to be prepared vegetarian. They also asked to skip the chimmichurri and green onions from the salmon, and this request was accommodated. The waitress did warn us that the vegetarian version of the beans would be somewhat lacking in flavor. She was correct. As to ambiance: the noise was quite high, to the point where conversation became a challenge. We are on the upper end of the age range of patrons, and perhaps this was not the best place for us. All in all, a decent brew pub, although we have been to better.

Yelp
Hi I try your fish and chips on 1/29/2024. And the portion size was amazing. But the food was so salty . The fish .. the fries and tartar sauce was full of salt . I notice it because I have high blood pressure. And the food was real greasy . Like the grease needs to be changed. Coke slaw was hot. I know because I used to work in a restaurant. I really love fish & chips . This place is 5 minutes where I live .. I think you need to have a training meeting with the cooks. I seen the last place disappeared because of bad food quality.. I tried it once and I said I never go back there. Tha was over four years. Then I like black lotus they had the best fish and chips and then they went downhill. I said I'm going back there, so I just want you to stay longer. You have to get good quality cooks in Order to make it. Work I will wait tell you get the kinks out a long-term clawson neighbor. Ms k

Yelp
I will start out by saying the food tasted good. I got the Mac and cheese and my only complaint on that would be the pork was dry on top, but tasty overall. The reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because the portion sizes are small for the prices you pay. The Reuben bites only came with 4 small bites. This would not be enough for a family to share. The two of us were able to eat it very fast. I would recommend doubling the portion on that to make it worth the price. The service was a little slow too, but okay overall. Not sure if I will be back because we have our local favorite spot where it's hard to beat the prices, service, portion sizes and consistency.

Yelp
A friend and I went here for dinner last night and had a fabulous time! The food was delicious, the beers were on point, and the service was top notch! Abbie, our server, was so knowledgeable and friendly, and made our experience that much better! Will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Smelt was amazing! Our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about our beers and made some great recommendations. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Ultimately, Grand River Brewery is absurdly overpriced for less than mediocre food. Nearly everything is $20+ dollars a plate, even for Mac and cheese or nachos. Want to add cheese to your pretzels? That will be an extra $6. The beer is also largely disappointing. Very little variety and they were out of the few beers that caught our interest. We were very excited a new brewery was opening up in town but this place is certainly not worth your time or money.

Yelp
Service is good! Food is excellent and locally sourced. Their weekly specials are always interesting and delicious. Beer and wine are great.

Yelp
Service was a bit slow with Angel but she was polite. Fried Brussels appetizer was under done but had good flavors. My seasonal Mac and Cheese was burnt to the point of being inedible but I didn't want to make a fuss so I didn't send it back. I'm not sure that I will be giving this place another shot and I can't say that I recommend it.

Yelp
Visiting a friend who lives in town, we decided to check out the new place in town. It was very busy so be prepared to wait longer than expected. A 30 minute wait turned into a 60 minute wait. It's a new place so in time things will work out. The staff is hard working. I felt kind of bad that only two people were working behind the bar pouring drinks for the entire place non-stop. Where the place falls short is the food. Barbecued chicken wangs (wings) were overdone. I had the pork tacos and I probably should have sent them back. They smelled funny. The pork tasted funny. I left them uneaten and instead filling up on the rice and beans.

Yelp
Poor service, poor food. So disappointed. The Nashville chicken sandwich didn't have spice. The short rib was slop with all fatty and gristly pieces. Overpriced for what it is.

Yelp
Definitely a miss. When we arrived no one greeted us and there were no signs for whether to sit or wait to be seated. We sat down at a table by the bar and after 15minutes no one had noticed us but they had already taken orders for a couple that had arrived just before us. We moved to the other side of the restaurant where we were noticed immediately and thought all was good. Unfortunately our order was not put in due to a miscommunication between servers and no one noticed for a very long time. It took over an hour to get any food. When we did get our food it was pretty mediocre. We were not offered any discounts and or comps and ultimately spent an uncomfortable two hours there which was our mistake for not leaving when we didn't initially receive service. I don't know that I've ever received service poor enough to actually leave a negative review for a restaurant before.

Yelp
Food has been terrible both times I've been here. Atmosphere is a 10/10, drinks are 9/10, but food has been miss every time. The hot chicken pizza has no flavor and the salads are over boarded with chips or dressing. Hopefully they fix soon! We're mug club members and they forget our mug every single time. I'm sure that's just because it's new but still frustrating to pay for a mug and not utilize it.
