My first time in Lucca, though not my first time in Italy. Since joining Bonvoy, I have stayed at more than 20 Bonvoy properties, and by far, this hotel’s staff has been the most friendly and hospitable among the ones I’ve experienced in Italy—comparable to the exceptional hospitality I’ve encountered at some of the properties I’ve stayed at in Türkiye.
From the moment we stepped into the hotel, Vanessa welcomed us at the door. It is such an unusually happy and comforting feeling when a receptionist genuinely shows that they are happy you are there. We were upgraded to one of their lovely suites, which featured both a shower and a bathtub—something that truly came in handy, as we were quite exhausted after being on the road for a while.
The hotel is walkable from the Lucca train station; however, the walkways are not very luggage-friendly, as the city has preserved its historic character, which we genuinely appreciated. We still managed to walk with our large suitcase, but it is worth mentioning that there were taxis available right at the station upon arrival, and the hotel also kindly provides a taxi for departure if needed.
On our second day, I had a few questions regarding how to operate the bath faucets (very modern and chic instruments) as well as the heated towel rack. I stopped by the reception and met Mare—another amazing team member—who truly listens, understands your needs, and takes the time to help.
Upon our return from a day trip to Pisa, we were greeted at reception by Ylenia. Equally professional and friendly as her colleagues Vanessa and Mare, Ylenia was already informed about my earlier questions regarding the bathtub and towel rack, as Mare had professionally passed along the information before leaving for the day. That level of communication and care truly stood out.
I cannot thank MariaPia enough for how wonderfully she served us breakfast and coffee during our first three days. Her attention to detail and sense of perfectionism are immediately noticeable. We also dined in for lunch while MariaPia was on duty, and along with her excellent service came one of the most delicious lunches we’ve had in a very long time. The cooks in the Grand Universe home kitchen do an outstanding job, which is why we chose to enjoy one final lunch there on our last day before departure.
Not only are their cooking skills impressive, but the food is also exceptionally fresh. Even though the restaurant was not very busy during the month of February, they still managed to maintain the highest level of freshness and quality—something that truly deserves recognition. When MariaPia was off, Vicky stepped in and showed the same level of hospitality during both breakfast and lunchtime service.
Their roof top operates on certain days however you are free to go up and enjoy the view!
Autograph Collection Grand Universe truly became our home away from home. The entire team made us feel so comfortable and welcome that we left thinking, “We definitely need to come back to see our friends here again very soon.”
