MICHELIN Guide Hotels as Stylish as the MICHELIN Guide Restaurants Inside

"There may be no better way to end a day of watching the seals and surf than savoring a plate of Jamaican jerk pork belly at Nine-Ten. Located in the century-old Grande Colonial Hotel, the dining room is more relaxed than grand, populated by beachy sorts who keep their shades on through dinner. During lunch, the menu offers casual fare like sandwiches and salads; the front sidewalk and back area overlooking the pool are excellent spots to tuck in. Those seeking the fullest experience at dinner may opt to put themselves at the “mercy of the chef,” their cheeky way of offering a tasting menu. The pastry program is a highlight, whether it’s freshly baked pastries at brunch or a “creamsicle” dessert with citrus cake, coconut ice cream and orange sherbet." - Nancy DePalma

We were on the top floor. View was really good. Would have preferred the other side of the hotel so we could have seen the sunset and not been above the dumpsters and the morning noise. Nice old Victorian vibe. Bed was bad or worse. Bathroom was small. Great location. It was fine, the people were amazing, expected more of the room for the price.

Our birthday celebration at the Grand Colonial Hotel in La Jolla was pure magic. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel like royalty—gracious, attentive, and genuinely celebratory. The ocean views from our suite were stunning, and the hotel's historic charm added a timeless elegance. Our banquette was a culinary highlight—featuring artful plates, bold flavors, and perfectly paired wine. Between the cozy ambiance and joyful moments shared with loved ones, it was the kind of experience that lingers long after the candles are blown out. La Jolla’s sunshine was the icing on the cake.

Yes, the pillows really were the fluffiest I've ever used. In fact the combination of the bed and pillows are like sleeping on a cloud, being held safe and sound. The bathroom was functional, except the toilet was a bit too close to the sink. Otherwise, great shower, plenty of linens. Lots of mirrors. Big closet. Exceptionally quiet, I did not notice sound from any other guests. The restaurant has very good food, for any meal. The steak is outstanding. The stone fruit salad for lunch is a delight. The staff is ready to help in any way.

I stayed here for 3 nights in June-July 2025 in a standard room on the 5th floor facing onto Prospect Street. Management pictures online and the positive reviews on TripAdvisor are accurate. This is a lovely, traditional hotel in the best possible location in La Jolla cove/village. Everything fresh, spotless, and well maintained. Note that the pool is no deeper than 3-4 feet and is more for cooling off than swimming. Excellent customer service from the car valet (so fast!) and reception, especially Cassie. Very easy walking to many good restaurants and cafes. For a bit of old La Jolla, try Harry's Coffee Shop (diner) on Girard Avenue, about 3 blocks away.

The service was excellent! Location in beautiful we loved walking down by the water and seeing the sea lions. LaJolla was perfect. We walked around and felt very safe. Area is clean and beautiful. Hotel was also wonderful.

Imagine waking up to the sounds of the ocean roaring and falling asleep to the fresh ocean breeze after a walk along shore. Heaven. The Grande Colonial rooms are beautiful and relaxing, the location is perfectly located to walk to shops and restaurants and to the beach, the staff is passionate and friendly and the vibe is perfect for couples or a girls weekend. This is a 5-star experience. They treat you like a famous family member, calling you by name and asking how your day went when you return. I can't imagine staying any place else when I visit La Jolla. (I could live here if I could afford it.) I have been staying here for more than a decade -- and it has never disappointed me. I have stayed in nearly every wing, and have my favorite rooms! My favorite memories have been made with family and friends here!

I have never have been tested as nice at any hotel as I did here. I stayed in hotels in the states and overseas. If I come back to San Diego, I will be staying at the Grande Colonial. Hopefully management realizes the quality of their staff, appreciates their efforts and retains them. Rooms are clean and spacious. Many of amenities offered as well.

The room is spacious & clean. It is in a prime location. 2 min walk to children pool. Walking distance to all restaurants. The only complaint is the room on top of my room making some noise in the morning walking me up.

Yelp
Amazing friendly and kind valet attendant, Gerome. He and the team of attendants were helpful and welcoming- made us feel right at home.

Yelp
Located in the middle of La Jolla Village. Historic hotel but recently renovated so has all the modern amenities. Very friendly staff, highly informed with good suggestions regarding the nearby restaurants and activities. Snacks and drinks in the room plus fridge. Large walk-in closet with safe. Overall a great place for a weekend getaway.

Yelp
All the employees we encountered during our two days there were very friendly. From Ivy the texting chat, to housekeeping, valet, front desk. We had a ridiculous number of requests (a room upgrade, wine glasses, wine key, bathrobe, slippers, ice and extra bucket, tea, late check-out, etc) to fulfill our needs and each time they were met with kindness and a smile. The hotel itself is a classic traditional style with beautiful details and rich dark wood and marble. It has an upscale feel that makes it fit in nicely. And of course, the location can't be beat. We chose it for the 4-stars and value. We loved our room size and the airy balcony it accompanied with a well operating window that we could use for fresh air and the salty breeze. The mattress and linens were sumptuous and each bed offered several sets of pillows varying in degrees of fluff. We had the wonderful experience of dining at NineTen. Our waiter, Jerard, was fabulous and so knowledgeable about the wines and dishes. He really made them come alive with exciting descriptions. The wine pairings with our duck and salmon were exquisite. Certainly an opportunity not to be passed up while staying there.

Yelp
I stayed here over Thanksgiving and it's just beautiful. It's elegant and beautifully decorated. The staff is so friendly. The TVs are kind of hard to use ... nearly impossible, but that's easy to overlook with all the views and excellent food. I will be back again!

Yelp
This hotel is perfect, and the restaurant is wonderful as well. Amazing location right by the water in La Jolla & the staff is fantastic. I recommend getting an ocean facing room for beautiful views! :)

Yelp
This past weekend was planned for our wedding anniversary and we chose to celebrate the occasion at the Grande Colonial. I am a proud veteran and utilized a third party booking service through USAA. Unfortunately, it was projected we would immediately be affected by the Line Fire on Saturday. I called USAA Perks and requested on Friday to cancel our reservation and begin our evacuation procedures to be ready and not cause further issues for responding fire personnel. We were under mandatory evacuation early Saturday and are thankful we made the responsible decision to prepare. We are on day 5 under evacuation as this is being written. I was notified today through email from USAA Perks that Grande Colonial would not refund the reservation and would stick with their standard cancellation policy. It is a surprise and disheartening that an establishment of this caliber would respond to a state of emergency in such a callous and non-empathetic manner, we were one day out the cancellation policy. This is the decision made to treat a veteran with such disdain? Apparently the management here is not aware of a sense of dedication. We will have our celebration when we and our animals safely return home, and I guarantee, it will not be at the Grande Colonial! Disrespected veteran https://www.gov.ca.gov/2024/09/07/governor-newsom-proclaims-state-of-emergency-in-san-bernardino-county-secures-federal-assistance-to-support-response-to-line-fire/ Updated 12:30: Thank you to Kim for responding to my review and quickly addressing the problem. I am expecting a full refund. We are still dealing with our evacuation and hope to give Grande Colonial a visit in the near future.

Yelp
My husband and I love staying at this hotel for a relaxing getaway! Beautiful area and grounds in La Jolla, walking distance to ocean

Yelp
Initially gave 2 stars but then discovered filthy room and bug in shower and nasty ice bucket. Kim GM said manager would contact NEVER EVER DID. READ MY OTHER REVIEW. POORLY MANAGED HOTEL.

Yelp
This hotel is a hidden gem! The staff is so friendly, the rooms are super clean (and even have snacks), the restaurant food is to die for and the ocean views are incredible! You can walk to everything in La Jolla and there are tons of shops, restaurants & bars. I had a wedding at the hotel & the manager Daisy & her team were absolutely amazing! I will definitely be coming back for vacation!

Yelp
Would love to tell you it was awful so I can go back and not fight for a room but in reality it was fantastic. Clean rooms, beautiful view and nice area great choice... Stayed in the bungalows glad I didn't book the hotel as it was perfect. Wish bungalows had designated parking in front of them but no other issues

Yelp
Had an amazing 2-night stay with my kids. It's a bit outdated but the service was impeccable and the food (we had two breakfasts) was outstanding. Cannot beat the location in downtown La Jolla either. Will be back!!

Yelp
My wife and I chose this hotel because of the location and the reviews we had seen. In terms of the former, the location was excellent. It's central and within walking distance to pretty much everything. In terms of the latter, well our experience was a bit mixed. First of all, the pros. Generally good service, especially the housekeeping staff. They made our experience five stars. Our room (King Garden Suite) was also spacious, included a working electric fireplace, and a small kitchenette that really came in handy. The daily coffee was also good and of good quality. In terms of cons, the room itself, although spacious, could use some updating. For example, where the carpet ends and meets the tile in the bathroom, there were exposed carpet staples which my wife pricked her foot on. The sink occasionally leaked and there are no streaming capabilities on the TV. None. For a hotel of this caliber, I'd expect the ability to at least stream Netflix using my account. Second, amenities. We were told that there would be a shuttle service via London cab or golf cart. The cab was down, so golf cart it is. This is nice but also not the best experience, especially considering the fees that are charged. In fact, of the fees, I'm not really sure what we were really getting for such a high fee. This is La Jolla though, so expect that. Overall, a positive experience but I'd probably stay elsewhere for the cost.

Yelp
Update to my review: service was so wonderful! The assistant manager, Ryan, is a gem. After my last review he reached out to us via email to make it right. Who does that???? Someone who has excellent hospitality skills. The front desk ladies were so lovely this go round and very accommodating! The laughed and teased with us and even switched our rooms when it was very noisy! All in all, because of their customer service and the managers caring and follow up we will definitely be using this hotel as our go to place in the future. We are in California about 2 to 3 times a year and we have wedding festivities coming up so we will definitely be using The Grande Colonial for all!!!!

Jeremy P.

Yelp
Always clean. We stayed here years ago. We stayed in a normal room. Since then they have received email specials. We live less than two hours away so we can go last minute and get a discount price for rooms that hadn't been reserved. We just stayed in a king junior suite for not much more than a standard room. You could see the ocean out of every window.

Yelp
Older Hotel in downtown La Jolla, consisting of a main building and several outlying buildings. I had booked a queen ocean view room two beds. The room does have a lovely view, however it faces a small parking lot snd one side is directly on the street. If you are looking for quiet, do not book this room. Another issue was that across the street was some heavy construction equipment parked. At 3:45 am the company decided to move it!!!Unbelevable! The service in the hotel is good, you are greeted by name, there is a very nice restaurant and a small pool. Dry walkable area. Would stay again and book a different room. There was also a mix up with my car, the valet brought me the wrong car the first day.

Yelp
This beautiful, classic and totally renovated boutique hotel in La Jolla never fails to impress! The Grande Colonial boasts spacious rooms with extra comfy beds, spectacular views and spotless elegance throughout. I've hosted a few corporate functions here (doing another in August) and Leo Lopez and his staff have always proven to be Top Notch professionals who made me and our guests feel welcome and comfortable in every way possible. If that's not enough, Jamie will greet you at their Michelin rated restaurant NINE-TEN for an outstanding meal and experience led by award winning chef Jason Knibb. Yummy, I can't to return!

Yelp
This hotel is my saving grace. I have been a loyal customer for 26 years. This Sunday will be the anniversary of my husband's death. I am a young widow who needed to fall asleep in a place called home. I love this place in every essence of its beautiful walls and extensive view of the ocean. I need to recognize the most amazing employee/ manager ever. Her name is Isabel. She always remembers me and makes me feel special. A few months ago I was studying for my licensing exam. I needed to go to a place for peace and solace. ISABEL WAS MAGNIFICENT. She set up a room away from the noise, arranged a car to take me to the exam, and had other employees check in via text to see if I passed. I was alone without my husband but felt incredibly cared for. After my dinner at Colonial's amazing restaurant, Isabel arranged for a celebratory cake. I was in tears! Thank you Isabel!!!'i

Yelp
Fantastic hotel and great customer service. We especially appreciated Casey L.'s help and recommendations to local places to eat and shop. Very welcoming and friendly demeanor. It was nice getting up early to bike around town (the hotel provides the bikes). Love this town and will be coming back to stay at the Grande Colonial Hotel again.

Yelp
Arrived with my boyfriend for the Memorial long weekend and left engaged! Our whole 3 days 2 night stay can't be more perfect. We arrived a few hours early so we had left our truck with the valet to park while we grab some food. Came back and our room was already ready with our belongings in the room. Super nice! Our room had a pool view and partial ocean views which was cool. We had everything we needed in the room. Comfortable bed and amenities like coffee. I like that it's close to the lobby when we had to grab extra bottled water which they graciously gave us. All the staff was friendly and accommodating. We had room service for breakfast on Sunday, it came fast and food was delicious! We're very happy to have stayed in this beautiful hotel. I'm all for the charm and historic buildings.

Marky M.

Yelp
I had a wonderful stay at the Grand Colonial. I had to book my reservation from out of town and Isabel took a personal interest in making sure I got the right room at the right rate. She remembered me when I checked in! The room was beautiful, clean spacious, and all the amenities one could hope for. I love the history and classic look of the hotel. The view was spectacular of the ocean. The staff was warm and friendly. The grounds were meticulously maintained. The hotel is situated perfectly right in the center of La Jolla Cove I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone wanted to stay in La Jolla Cove, and be in the middle of everything going on and yet still feel like you are in a quiet and secluded space.

Yelp
The hotel was nice and the vicinity to the beach was perfect. I thought I'd be doing more in La Jolla which is why we paid the extra money for a closer hotel. We ended up not really staying there and venturing out. The demographic at the hotel seemed to be more of a retired crowd and also not too diverse tbh. We went to restaurants in the area that seemed to have a diverse crowd so I feel like it was probably just the hotel. Also, at check-in, I overheard a guest mention that the manager waived an amenities fee since she wasn't going to use them. I requested the same waiver and was denied. I was told everyone pays it but obviously not everyone. Lol I didn't push for it just let them know I wish they'd be consistent. The area was beautiful but I don't think I'd be comfortable staying again.

Yelp
Wife and I checked into the Grande Colonia as they were hosting my relatives wedding this past weekend. There was a mix up early when we checked in which caused us to stay in a lower-tier room. However, once we brought it to the hotels attention they found the correct room and moved us the following day after apologizing for the inconvenience. The good part was they were able to check us in a bit earlier than advertised. The restaurant Nine-Ten catered the wedding we attended and their food was decent enough. They valet was on time professional and also helped with baggage whenever needed. Our room as facing the ocean and had an outstanding view. This is a historic location and older hotel and some of things were notably missing for this reason. The floors are hard and they didn't have any slippers available. Also I just comment about the size of the showers. The showers were in the small side and the glass covering the shower only covers half of the shower which allows for water to drip down causing a slip and fall hazard and allowing cold air to brush against your backside depending on how you are facing the shower. Room service did a great job kept our room nice and tidy. Overall this was an okay experience just note you are paying for the view and proximity to the ocean. This location is near a strip mall with a lot of tourist areas and great restaurants. If you stay here I recommend you check out the Manhattan of La Jolla and excellent food place and the Outpost which for souvenirs. Both are within walking distance! Also there is a daily hospitality charge of $45 which de-incentivizes tipping. Although I am sure they put that in place after considering the business side economics.

Yelp
Absolutely excellent in every regard! From the moment you land on the curb you are treated as a welcome guest. Polite and efficient staff at the front desk, and a ambiance on par with many grand old hotels. Not to mention the rooms are impeccably clean and we had a spectacular ocean view. In more ways than one, this hotel has an edge over that pink hotel up the street where we've stayed many times. Filled with charm and great service this will be our "go to" spot in La Jolla in the future.

Yelp
This would have been a 4.5 star experience had it not been for the... ...wait for it... the NOISE. It's 100% true what others are saying so heed the warnings you are reading. I was treated to a staycation here a few weeks ago. We tried to book online but all the rooms seemed sold out. Friend was able to book a room via the phone though. It was his gift to me so I wasn't really sure what to expect from the room. I told him how the yelp reviews warned of construction noise so he made note of that. The valet guys were nice and efficient. The lobby looked dated and empty. The check in desk was to the left of entrance. Nine-Ten is to the right of entrance. There was just an eerie feel that early evening (check in is 430p). Elevator was first sign of renovation (see pic). It was shabby and all padded with cushions on the wall. We get to 5th floor and immediately noticed many rooms open and being worked on by construction/handy men. We had to maneuver around construction items in hallway to make it to our room. I felt so bad as friend said upon making reservation, the girl said construction was not being done on 5th or 3rd fl (something like that). So apparently that was false. But, my goodness. Our ROOM was breathtaking. I'm not sure why it's called a suite as it wasn't very big or had a table (for eating). But the views - the fresh ocean breeze that would blow on your face and through your hair - when you opened all the windows facing the ocean. It was truly one of THE BEST rooms I've ever experienced (due to views and breeze, not because of room amenities or furnishings). Friend said hotel mentioned this was a renovated room. There wasn't too much noise that evening. But in the morning, I can't remember what time. The noise just appeared. It was so frustrating and distracting. Friend wouldn't tell me what he paid for room but I know it was alot. It's expensive here at The Colonial so every minute counts when you want the full experience right? So losing precious moments with someone, because of construction noise, was unacceptable. What's the point of this staycation when the morning was pretty must lost due to their construction. We did order room service which comes from Nine-Ten. There were a few mistakes in the order but no biggie. The star dish was their FRENCH TOAST - holy moly . This food blogger was blown away (separate post to follow about Nine-Ten). We tried Nine-Ten happy hour the night before and enjoyed it quite a bit. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom had nice amenities but no tub. The shower was awkward as there was no shower door. Overall, an ok-stay(cation) that should have been a most memorable one.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible stay and staff! Some of the friendliest and most accommodating staff and loved the ocean view. Will definitely be back next visit and recommend to everyone.

Yelp
This Hotel actually stated that it does not Have Bedbugs. After I was bitten over 50 times and showed them the welts did the hotel manager, Kim Avant and Cassie, a day manager said "This never happened before". I actually saw the bedbugs on the hotel pillow, and the hotel manager, Kim Avant, denied the whole thing. Unbelievable. But true. I travel for a living for 25 years. I stay in the Ritz Carlton worldwide regularly and the Sheridan--Holiday Inn hotels. I have NEVER EVER been bitten by bedbugs. THE GRANDE COLONIAL INN in La Jolla, California has bedbugs. Not 1, not 2, but 3 their coffee makers in the room exploded both days before breakfast. I only stayed 2 nights. ONE NIGHT COSTS $487. Frankly, is a guest entitled to a clean bedroom????? Apparently not.

Yelp
Once again a fantastic stay, perfect location and always great service. And one of the few value buys you can find in La Jolla. Only disappointment is fact 9-10 restaurant was closed as I stayed on a Sunday night and love their breakfast. Will be back in July.

Yelp
We live here in SD and hosted our daughter's wedding at La Valencia. One of our wedding blocks for guests was at the Grande Colonial. After reading the online reviews, we were confident that our guests would have a wonderful stay. Unfortunately, of the 3 hotels we referred our guests to, this is the only one we received complaints about. The consistent complaints were that the staff was not hospitable or friendly in the least. I booked a room for my parents and they were not made to feel as "valued guests" whatsoever. They are in their 70's and I assured them that they could ask to be transported to the wedding events via the golf cart or the "London Cab"; yet they were told "no" every time they asked. The coffee maker didn't work so they had to purchase room service every day. Valet attendants were also very unfriendly. Ironically, the only staff member that was kind to them was when they checked out... an hour before we received the auto email asking us to review their stay.

Kathy C.

Yelp
My friend and I came from separate cities to reconnect for a few days and Grande Colonial is the perfect place to stay. We stayed in the Little Hotel and loved the kitchenette, which the amazing housekeeping staff refilled with free snacks and water/sodas each day. All the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. The seal beach is only a block away and we saw multiple mamas and babies playing in the water. There is a plethora of excellent dining within walking distance, and we loved the hotel pool and the Little Hotel's rooftop seating area. I would go back there in a heartbeat!

Yelp
Alright you guys, if you are looking for an amazing stay in La Jolla with an ocean view at a great price, look no further! This place is amazing, staff is very friendly and helpful. Stayed only one night for my wife and my anniversary, and I had called ahead to ask for something special for my wife since it is our anniversary, they provided us with a bottle of wine and an amazing view! When I first booked, I was a little worried that I was paying more for an ocean view because I have heard of many experiences where people only get a partial ocean view from let's say the bathroom. This place is definitely not that! Thank goodness, from every window in this room, we have a view of the ocean! The room is beyond clean, is not outdated, if I were to give some downsides for our room it would be that I wish the shower head was a little bigger or extended out farther from the wall, and that I wish there was a table in the room to eat at. This is more my own preference, there is a desk to sit at.

Yelp
I have stayed at the Grande Colonial several times over the past five years as a stay-cation. I went back last week and spent two nights at the Little Hotel By The Sea. They had a great deal where you could stay in a small studio king room for the same price as a room in the main hotel. The room was extremely clean, with a lovely soaking tub. The bed was super comfy and the roof deck was empty so I was able to sit and enjoy sunsets there. The service was outstanding. They fulfilled my every request. Extra pillows, a throw blanket, room service, they helped me make reservations at the Nine-Ten restaurant and even the maintenance person came to me and asked me if the pool was warm enough as I had requested it be made warmer. The only thing that gave me pause (any why I didn't give it 5 full stars) was that there were a LOT of guests walking around inside and outside the hotel without masks. When I pointed this out to host staff while I was waiting to get into the restaurant I was met with a "well they should be wearing them" - at that very moment I pointed out 3 guests in the lobby without masks and again was told "well the valet should have told them and look - one guy has his mask in his hand". Well holding a mask in your hand doesn't help anyone. That employee should have stopped what they were doing and told each guest to put on their mask! My suggestion is that the front desk verbally remind everyone checking in about the mask policy AND politely remind guests who are not wearing masks to put them on.

Yelp
Upon arrival we had a great impression we paid almost $600 for a double bed with ocean view. I knew it was a little expensive but knew we were also next to the beach. It all took a turn when we had to walk through the bar area where people were eating and drinking then in a door that was right next to the kitchen to walk up one flight of stairs. I was ok with it till we got to the room and I realized I way over paid the paint was cracking on the walls and you could tell it had been painted over many many times. The room was probably smaller than any "regular hotel". We accepted the condition knowing we would only be there one night. We were excited to eat at the restaurant downstairs but we were told no tables were available "sorry" I mean if you need to make reservations why not say that at the time you book your room. We went to a fabulous restaurant down the road that took great care of us. Now to the worst part of the stay. I woke up with a SPIDER IN MY BED!!!! I took video i will attach...also the coffee was all gross with old creamer. When I expressed my concern all the said was next time make a reservation... nothing about the spider or coffee....So unless this is the kind of stay you want I would recommend looking for another place

Yelp
This is just in our check in experience on Saturday, 10/19/19. First of all, we had to wait in line on a Saturday night and the desk clerk was downright rude. She could have easily called for back up help but didn't want to disturb her co worker who later resurfaced with a fast food drink in hand. No comment. Very VERY disappointing for an upscale beautiful hotel like the Grande Colonial. The owner or manager needs to step in and raise the bar!! :(

Yelp
I LOVE Yelp reviews! We were planning to stay at the la Valencia for about $550+ a night and after reading "not so great reviews" and not worth the money, someone said save $$ and stay down the street at the Grand Colonial - same great location, historic vibe and great service for less! They were right!!! So glad we switched last minute. Paid $279 for our room (#517 - no ocean view but gorgeous, spacious and we were ok with the night life on prospect street - felt like NYC a little. The staff was so attentive and incredibly friendly. Highly recommend and would stay here again. Walked to everything! Our fav place to eat was the Sugar & Scribe for brunch!! Wow! 5 stars for us!

Yelp
Exceeds expectations. 7 out of 5. After our air bnb fell through due to a bait and switch scam, we were scrambling to find last minute lodging. With two kids and a long drive, we were stressed, angry (at the air bnb host who ghosted us), and desperate. We called here because we stayed here in the past and really liked it. Praying there might be a room available, Stephanie came through here! So nice, so comforting, and so helpful! The rooms here are nice, clean, spacious, and fancy. The experience here has been A+++.

Yelp
We stayed at the Grand Colonial this weekend and it could not have been better! It's an older hotel but it has been updated throughout beautifully. The staff is all so helpful as well. We stayed in an ocean view king room with an amazing view. We dined at their on site restaurant, Nine Ten and the food was amazing! We highly recommend the pork belly appetizer and the donuts for dessert. We ended up going back for dinner a second night because we enjoyed it so much. We also planned on using the Grand Colonial for our wedding hotel block but due to COVID, we were forced to cancel our big wedding. Leo Lopez, the director of sales, helped us come up with an option that worked for us as well as the hotel. We are so thankful for his responsiveness and willingness to accommodate our needs. This is our second time staying at the Grand Colonial and we know it will not be our last!

Yelp
We drove down from L.A. to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. Couldn't have gone to a better place. Right where the La Jolla action is, surrounded by very nice restaurants and cafés, easy walk to the beaches. The room was extremely nice and clean, the bathroom was spacious with a great shower. But, best of all, the people need extra mention. Everyone went out of their way to assist us. We needed the small room refrigerator to be colder for our champaign. The woman helping us got us a super cold icebox and we were very happy about that. We will be back!

Yelp
This is our 3 night in a row staying. I need to leave this review before our stay is even completed for fear I will get home & get too busy to remember. I saw a couple of reviews before we booked that someone gave a 3.5 rating. That's ridiculous. My husband and I travel a lot and frequent all kinds of hotels. From the moment we got here every person we have come in to contact with that works at this hotel has strived to go above and beyond. So friendly, so genuine & so quick to help with even a tiny request. We Live 12 miles from here and we're attending a weekend wedding. The weather has gotten surprisingly warm here so today we decided to stay 1 more night in the air conditioning. They happily accommodated us. The room is spacious & overlooks the street. It's fun to see what's going on outside. Choose this hotel if you're looking for a pleasant, clean, comfortable lovely La Jolla historic hotel easy walking distance to everything La Jolla has to offer. The rooms are bigger than La Valencia Hotel close by & far less busy busy. Thank you to the Grand Colonial for making us feel so welcome and providing a great experience! We may just make this a yearly event.

Yelp
Nice, Clean, Cozy Hotel! My family recently stayed here for 3 nights while we were visiting San Diego and it ended up being the perfect spot for us! It has a cute victorian look with top service from their staff. Whenever we needed anything they were quick to provide it for us. We even had a beautiful Ocean view from our room, that we were able to also walk down to and enjoy. Bonus, there were lots of restaurants and shops that were right outside and all walking distance. My son loved eating at "The Spot". Our family will definitely be staying here again.

Yelp
Wish I could give 6 stars! I stayed at grande colonial this past weekend to celebrate my birthday and it was everything I was hoping it would be and more. The location could not be more perfect, just a block away from the beach and surrounded by a bunch of amazing shops and restaurants. I only ubered to and from the airport, otherwise I was able to walk everywhere else or use the bikes the hotel provides for free. The baskets on the bike are a great touch, I was able to throw a towel in and just cruise around for the day. The restaurant attached to the hotel is fabulous. I ordered room service from there and have to say it was probably the best meal I had during this trip (which says a lot because all the food I had was amazing). What really made this stay extra perfect was the amazing staff and comfy beds. I was a little needy this trip as I needed extra linens several times and took out bikes each day, but the staff was always on point and never made it seem as if I was a bother. The beds here are probably the comfiest hotel beds I've ever slept in and I travel often! I felt like a queen my entire trip and the grande colonial played a big part in that. I can't wait to come and stay again!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. We did need to move rooms once due to noise. The rooms were spacious. I also do need to mention that the hotel was accommodating in allowing us to change our reservation dates prior to our visit which was nice. But what was absolutely inexcusable were the towels. All towels had the absorptive capability of a rubber mat and made the shower expense quite unpleasant. We honestly don't even know what was done to these towels to make them quite so bad. I think this is a basic thing that a hotel should really get right. It was bad.

Yelp
This is a perfectly lovely place to stay in La Jolla. We probably won't stay at the Grande Colonial again, because presently, our needs lean more towards an Airbnb. We have been to La Jolla so many times, we are no longer tourists. Certainly, we're not residents, but we're kind of in between a tourist and a resident. An Airbnb can bridge that gap. Our room at the Grande Colonial had views of the ocean, an updated and wonderful bathroom, and a comfortable bed. A refrigerator in the room was perfect for leftovers. There is a Keurig Coffee Machine, ample outlets, and plush towels. Even housekeeping was efficient and good. Include room service from Nine-Ten, and the Grande Colonial is certainly five star material. In the past, we always stayed at the Scripps Inn, but opted for the Grande Colonial because of the lack of air-conditioning at Scripps. However, the location of Scripps can't be beat, across the street from the ocean, and the sound of the waves at night is enchanting. The rooms, service, and amenities at the Grande Colonial are infinitely superior, but the quiet and soothing location of Scripps is special. It's all a matter of taste, but the Grande Colonial is a superior hostelry.

Yelp
Enjoyed our stay overall. Staff were wonderful. Very kind and helpful. Special shout out to Laura Bacerra who gave us a tour of the property even though she was off duty. Took off one star as I don't think our room had, "expansive ocean view" see picture. Also be aware the mini-fridge is more a cooler and not safe for medications etc. Restaurant was disappointing for breakfast. Pretty patio closed for private group and food mediocre. I noticed other patrons left their food too. Better to walk to The Cottage which is very close.8

Yelp
Our annual Christmas party was held here. I decided to get a room so I could relax while I was getting ready and not have to worry about going home to North County then coming back to La Jolla. It was a great call on my part (if I do say so myself!!!) I was upgraded to an Ocean view and I had a beautiful view of sunset as well as sunrise. My room was quant... plenty of room to shower and get ready... I was glad It was only myself and that I wasn't sharing a room! The venue was very nice- great appetizers and I have to say I think there could have been more choices at the bar...... it was very limited.... but, hey... I had my boyfriend Jack in my room saving the fireball!!!! ;-) The dinner was amazing and everyone really seemed to enjoy their choices. I had Filet Mignon. The room we sat in was elegant and quant. Afterwards quite a few of us moved into the bar area to finish off the evening! OOH my! My only complaint..... The robes in the room were definitely for petite people.... I don't think they would fit many of the guests I saw......

Yelp
This place is in the center of town. Walking distance to everything! It is connected to Nine Ten restaurant which is an amazing restaurant. My boyfriend and I shared a 5 course pairing meal with wine and it was unbelievable! When we first arrived we wanted a hotel room with a fireplace. The only problem was we couldn't get our fireplace to work but they then sent Maintance and worked on it for a while. Since that fireplaces didn't work they upgraded us to a suite with another place that worked! Gave us a complimentary bottle of wine and was so nice to us on our weekend there. I highly I recommend staying at the grand colonial hotel. It is it is classy quaint and tranquil!

Yelp
Treat yourself. Ask for the King Suite in The Little Hotel by the Sea. Open the French doors to the tiny balcony for a view straight to the ocean. Things we loved: the small but lovely pool, the rooftop deck, the food at 910, nice linens, great pillows, super close to coffee shops, restaurants, galleries. Above all, the staff is wonderful. Everyone from the front desk to the multi-tasking housemen was delightful to say the least. The vintage buildings, elevators and architectural detail were the icing on the cake. No question, five stars!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay here at the Grande Colonial. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We loved that we can correspond with the front desk by text message, they would text in the evening to remind us to order our breakfast for the morning and ask if we needed anything in our room. The hotel room was lovely and we had a nice view of the ocean. The shores of La Jolla were so beautiful to stay by and we woke up each morning to the sounds of crashing waves. Also tons of stores and food within walking distance to us. The building has a wonderful charm to it and a vintage feel with modern amenities ! It was such a lovely hotel experience and we can't wait to come back again in the future!
