11 Excellent Restaurants to Try in Newton

"Shiuchin Chang, the grandma behind the eponymous restaurant, and her family run this popular Newtonville Taiwanese spot. The menu has plenty of small bites like tender, light and crispy popcorn chicken and larger offerings like braised beef noodle soup. Grandma’s also has a large beverage menu with milk teas available with boba or mini tapioca pearls. With only four tables, seats fill up quickly, but you can call to place an order for takeout." - Carolyn Grillo

This restaurant truly is the definition of what a comforting and cozy food spot should be, echoing what many others have already said. It has a small menu, simple presentation, and quality ingredients that deliver amazing, distinctive flavors. I particularly enjoyed the popcorn chicken, which was crispy and juicy at the same time. The spice level is also just right, with options for customization. The spicy wonton noodles were top-notch, delicious to the very last bite. What was most surprising was the mango milk with sago – I didn't expect it to be so refreshing, with real mango chunks and perfectly cooked sago. The salt and pepper pork chop was also nicely seasoned. I will definitely come back here often. Just a heads-up: they don't have AC in the summer because of building rules, so you might want to plan for takeout on hot days.

This Taiwanese restaurant is a hidden gem! I’ve tried a lot of places, but nothing comes close to the flavor and quality here. The popcorn chicken is perfectly crispy, juicy, and packed with that classic five-spice flavor—it’s hands-down the best I’ve ever had. Super friendly staff, quick service, and a cozy vibe make it even better. If you're a fan of Taiwanese comfort food, this spot is a must-visit!

Google
Found this gem in Newton. The food was tasty. We especially liked the fried chicken and the braised beef noodles soup. They don’t joke around about the spice, so only get the spicy level if you really can handle it. They don’t have many tables, so we waited around 40 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. We visited the bakery nearby in the meantime. The service was friendly but slow, since one person in the front did everything, including takeout and making drinks.

Google
Great food! Had the beef rib rice noodle, popcorn chicken, pudding and taro milk tea. The noodle dish was piping hot, and the beef was fall-off-the-bone perfection. Popcorn chicken was flavorful without being too salty. The pudding was creamy and not too sweet. The taro milk tea kept me coming back for more sips. Service was very attentive, despite all tables being occupied and a regular stream of take out orders.

Exceeded my expectations! First I would like to say it’s a family restaurant and the greetings and service is impeccable! I felt like I was a baby getting catered to by my caring family members haha the food was amazing! It was a bit spicy for my tolerance and they offered me milk which I loved and appreciated! Best Taiwanese food in newton. Their popcorn chicken is so delicious and the spicy wonton noodle soup. Amazing amazing I recommend and will definitely be back again! Update: I came back and got the minced pork over rice with a fried egg. AMAZING! I do want to say that it is ran by a mother and her two kids (I assume). So they definitely do their best with keeping up with serving and seating, as seating is limited in a cozy place. They gave me a little treat for my review which I was not expecting! I adore this mom and pop shop and the pricing is extremely reasonable and food quality is amazing. I definitely recommend stopping by!

We were in town for Friendsgiving and decided to have a quick lunch here. It was the perfect cozy spot. We ordered minced pork rice, braised beef noodle soup, popcorn chicken, spicy wontons, and beef pancakes. Every dish was fantastic. The noodle soup was especially comforting on a rainy day, and the minced pork rice, though it looked simple but was packed with flavor. The popcorn chicken was my favorite. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and absolutely delicious. For drinks, we tried the mango milk, grapefruit black tea, and traditional milk tea. The grapefruit black tea was so refreshing, and the service was great. I loved that they adjusted the sweetness level to my liking. I wish Grandma's Kitchen was closer to home so I could come here again! I would definitely recommend this place.

Google
…a place where everyone knows your name (Cheers reference, but exactly true here. Get there early to snag a table ( it fills up fast) and enjoy a crafted meal served with warmth, just like grandma used to. I had the chicken soup, delightful, and snacked on my daughter’s chicken dish, with a side of sesame balls. Yum!

Yelp
Grandma's Kitchen is our go to for amazing food and lovely vibes! The owners are so friendly and make you feel so welcome. Would definitely recommend the braised beef noodle soup. Can't recommend enough!

Yelp
Great food and great service! Cute little restaurant with the kindest staff. The perfect spot to fill all the Taiwanese food cravings. Popcorn chicken was amazing with crunch, spice, and tenderness! The Taiwanese Kimchi was so addicting and the perfect balance between all of the other dishes. The beef noodle soup was the best I've ever had! It has so much depth and flavor and I love that it has a kick of spice in it. Had my meal with a boba milk tea to top off the most perfect meal. Will definitely have to stop by again next time I'm in town!

Yelp
Small casual mom and pop shop with 4, 4 person tables. Service was a little slow, as it appeared to be only two people primarily managing everything. Kudos to them as they did it with a smile and were extra friendly. Everything was delicious. The salt and pepper pork was tender and well seasoned. Taiwanese Kim chi was so refreshing, but on the sweeter side. Beef pancake had balanced well between amount of beef, pancake and hoisin sauce, and not oily like some reviews may have mentioned. Spicy wontons are a must! Can't wait to come back and try the other dishes!

Yelp
If you're not coming here for the food, come for the handsome twink Asian guy at the counter. Seriously, he's like a delightful appetizer for your eyes before the main course! Whether he's giving you that dazzling smile or just handing over your order with the grace of an Instagram influencer, he alone is worth five stars. But let's not forget the food -- because it's as good as the service. Everything from the menu seems crafted with love, or maybe it's just the extra sprinkle of charm that twink magic adds. Either way, it's a win! Highly recommend!

Yelp
My go-to beef noodle soup place! There is almost certainly a line for a seat, but it is well worth the wait. They will put your name on a waitlist and they have plenty of seating around to wait. The restaurant is clean and the seating is comfy. The service is very nice and all the staff are very attentive. I love the texture of the spicy wontons. They aren't too spicy and have a lot of filling. The beef noodle soup came out piping hot which I loved! The noodles had great texture and the beef was tender and flavorful. I will be back at least once a month for beef noodle soup.

Yelp
The food is incredible. Good fast service, attentive staff. Looks busy but did not have to wait too long. Clean, stylish modern restraunt. Yum!

Yelp
Authentic no-frills Taiwanese restaurant with homemade tasting dishes, just like the name itself. It only has 3/4 tables so the wait can be long (anywhere between 30mins to an hour). Got popcorn chicken, crispy fish fillet and minced pork rice as appetizers to share between the four of us. Everything tasted great and the cod was fried to perfection with perfect sauce to dip on the side. I got the beef noodle soup and the broth was a delight. I got it medium spicy and the spice level just adds a kick to this light yet umami broth. Be careful tho, the spiciest can be really spicy. Overall a great place. If I have to complain, the price is a little too much for the portion and for these Taiwanese staples. -8.2/10

Yelp
Incredible Taiwanese food! The interior is quite small so the wait can get long, but definitely worth it. I got the beef noodle soup with medium spice (I was warned that the hot was gonna be really spicy) and it was so perfect! The broth was really clear and smooth. Other places I've had the broth is super fatty and oily but this one is really clean. The spicy level was a good level after pairing it with the brown sugar milk tea. I wish it had more veggies but the portion size was good. The wontons were also incredibly flavorful and not too spicy. The wrappers are the perfect thickness and the filling is meaty. Will definitely be back to try other menu items!

Yelp
I really love their beef noodle soup! I came here with my boyfriend and their soup never misses. Definitely close to home and will come by to enjoy more of their dishes.

Yelp
The food is amazing!!! And the staff are super kind. I had the chicken noodle soup (with medium heat ) and a side of kimchi. I will be back!

Yelp
The most authentic Taiwanese cuisine in town! In addition to the heavenly Taiwanese snacks, bubble tea and street food such as popcorn chicken, sesame balls, sweet potato fries and Taiwanese kimchi, the main courses including beef noodle soup, chicken noodle soup, pork chop rice and braised pork rice are all freshly made and delightful. The grandma and the staff here are always incredibly friendly with their most sincere and warm smiles. They always open their arms to welcome everyone. My terrible homesickness for Taiwanese food is always completely healed and consoled whenever I visit Grandma's kitchen!

Yelp
Great casual Taiwanese dining spot! The atmosphere has got a homey, cozy vibe, and the workers are extremely friendly! There may be a wait at times because of the smaller space, but worth it. My friend and I ordered a few things: pork rice, popcorn chicken, beef noodle soup, and spicy wontons. Everything was tasty, and approved by my Taiwanese friend (except the spicy wontons). Prices were very reasonable too. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Overall: grandma didn't let me down. This Taiwanese restaurant is the epitome of family owned small business. Yes there might be a wait but what if I told you it was some of the most authentic Taiwanese food I've had in the US. Food: grandma cooked to us beef noodle soup, pork chop rice, popcorn chicken, Taiwanese pickled cabbage, and threw in a special treat for us! I think the highlight has to be how light and crispy the popcorn chicken was. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful without the heavy oily breading in other kinds of fried chicken. The pickled cabbage just needs that stinky tofu pairing you get from a night market to round out the combo. Otherwise quite crunchy and well pickled with a tinge of spice. The pork chop hits the spot and while it may not stand out it really does bring you back to Taiwan. The best part is that she adds a little minced pork on the side that really feels like home cooking. They use lean pork and prioritize flavor over the fatty texture to maximize the dish. Lastly the beef noodle soup is not the intensely long cooked over multiple day kinda broth but it strikes the right balance of spices and beef flavor for a quick version. The beef shank is incredibly tender (perhaps too tender) but the soup base and the noodles are really reminiscent of home cooking. Ambience/Decor/Service: what I love about this place is that it really represents peak suburban restaurant. Not many dining tables, the register doubles as the boba shop and the kitchen is run by 1-2 people (including grandma!). The service as such is not fast but honestly you go to also just hang out and "meet your neighbors" as I saw the cashier conversing with a few customers as well.

Yelp
Authentic, delicious Taiwanese food! I came here for Sunday lunch and it was quite busy and waited ~40-50minutes for a table. The place is small with only a few tables. Once we were seated, the food came out really hot and quick! Everything we had was really good and portions were reasonable for the price. Popcorn chicken: Got this hot level of spice and it was actually hot which I liked. The fry from the chicken was perfectly light and crispy and sweet and hot from the spice powder. Chicken was juicy. Scallion pancake: This was good, but would have appreciated more beef and scallion inside. Spicy Wonton noodle soup: Soup flavor was very umami and flavorful but didn't feel heavy. It had just enough spice in the soup. Wontons and noodles were al dente. Salt and Pepper Pork chop rice: so yummy! Perfectly flavored and cooked pork chop over rice with some ground pork and broccoli. The broccoli was marinated and cold and was really good too! Lavender milk tea with boba: Perfect amount of lavender flavor to the milk tea. The boba was sweet and chewy. Would definitely recommend this place if you are in the area and looking for authentic Taiwanese food!

Yelp
Really tasty and great experience!! We had a little bit of a wait - on Sunday morning - but it was really nice and they let us get a boba to go while we walked around in Newtonville. Delicious food that came out super quick. The popcorn chicken was delicious and spicy! I really liked the pork chop with rice. Also really enjoyed the wonton soup - the flavor of the broth was rich, garlic-forward and really hit the spot. Super friendly family-run business and a chill vibe all around. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Grandma's has only gotten better since opening! It gets pretty busy now, but the service and food is still top tier. Word of mouth has definitely gotten around, and all the OG's know this place. Definitely still the best Taiwanese restaurant in Greater Boston!

Yelp
Great authentic cuisine with super staff. Food is excellent and reasonably priced with many drink options as well. Go there quite a bit

Yelp
Value: 5/5 Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Such a cute little store! I loved this place. They only have 3 tables, so it can be hard to dine in sometimes. We ended up getting takeout because of the wait. Popcorn Chicken Rice: this was so freaking delicious. I got medium spice level but I feel like hot has the potential to be even better. The chicken definitely has a good kick. It was so crispy and tender! I also liked that they added ground pork to it. The richness of the sauce soaked into the rice and made it even better. It could have used a little more vegetables, though. I only got 2 broccoli florets Beef Roll: this one was disappointing. There was way too much hoisin sauce - it overpowered the rest of the wrap. I would have wanted more beef as well. Pork chop rice: this one was deliciously crispy, but I think the popcorn chicken was my favorite (because of the spices) Traditional milk tea: this was decent. Boba was chewy. Milk tea was solid for a place that doesn't specialize. Prices are very reasonable! It's around $12 for entrees. A nice family-owned business. We'll definitely be back

Yelp
Authentic Taiwanese flavors, and the staff are very friendly. You can enjoy Taiwanese snacks and drinks here. I recommend the braised beef noodle soup, fried fish fillet, and salt and pepper chicken. The salt and pepper chicken here might be the best in Boston.

Yelp
Rounding up the 4.3 rating to 5 stars because the food was fantastic! My partner and I had the popcorn chicken (hot), salt & pepper pork chop, minced pork rice, fried mantou, braised beef noodle soup (medium), chicken cutlet rice, and traditional milk tea w boba - TASTE: 5/5 - felt like homemade Taiwanese cooking. The popcorn chicken was truly spicy, and the pork chop was seasoned well w a light sugar undertone. The fried mantou was sinful from the bun itself, but also topped w condensed milk and homemade brown sugar syrup. The braised beef noodle soup was on point: pleasantly more sour and spicier than expected. The milk tea tasted more like tea, vs an indulgent milk flavor, which we still enjoyed! TEXTURE: 5/5 - the popcorn chicken, mantou, and chicken cutlet were fried perfectly w satisfying, crunchy bites. The pork chop, minced pork, and braised beef were tender PRICE: 5/5 - we ordered so much because it was easy to! Glad the price points are accessible for more folks to try Taiwanese food. Items in the appetizers section range from $2-10, soup & noodles $10-23, and rice $12 SERVING SIZE: 4/5 - portions are good to share. Devoured everything, besides some of the popcorn chicken to take home SERVICE: 3/5 - most days, Grandma's Kitchen opens from 11am-3pm, closes for a midday break, then resumes w 5-7:30pm dinner service. We walked in at 5:15pm on a Friday and all tables (only 3!) were already taken. We waited inside, w more groups coming after us, and were excited to finally be seated ~40min later. Although it took a long time up front, our food started coming out immediately after we placed our order, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Would consider ordering for takeout, in the event of another long wait, next time! ATMOSPHERE: 4/5 - cute, homey, and narrow space filled w Polaroid photos and Christmas decor PARKING: 4/5 - got a street spot on Washington St and walked a block over

Yelp
We finally tried Grandma's kitchen, that recently opened on Washington St in Newton. There are several new places that opened here and I tried 2 of the 3 that I know of (The empanada place and an asian bakery were the other 2). Decor and ambiance: This place looks very clean and the tables are laid out pretty spaciously, so I imagine dining in would be comfortable (space wise). Its bright inside. The problem I have is that its hot/humid inside. I went next door to the empanada place (cause of the very long wait for food) and they had sufficient air conditioning despite just the single worker being there. Grandma's restaurant had a few tables and several waiting on orders and the AC was way subpar for comfort. Imagine eating their hot noodle soup on a humid day like this...ugh. Service: Very friendly man who took our order over the phone and checked us out at the restaurant. Outside of the kitchen, it seemed like it was just this man and a very young girl acting as the waitress. She looked like maybe a 5th grader, definitely no more than an 8th grader. As its just a 2 person operation outside the kitchen, service was extremely slow. People dining in were waiting for food, and people ordering takeout were waiting on food. This leads me to think inside the kitchen is understaffed as well. I ordered a few appetizers and it took 35-40m wait on a friday around 6:30pm. Food and pricing: The food was very tasty and overall good. Everything had good flavor and just enough of it. However, everything tasted the same or very similar. Its like all the food is marinated in the same stuff, or deep fried in the same oiled with similar flavors. The chicken cutlet and salt & pepper pork chops and popcorn chicken and chicken wings all tasted the same to me. Pricing will look pretty attractive here, but note the portions are tiny. I got all appetizers and each item is barely shareable with another person. They have combo plates that cost a little more, but I think its likely the same quantity but they add a little minced pork, rice and veggie. The wings were very very small, so don't expect anything like korean fried chicken wings or even chicken wings in a pupu platter. They were very tasty though! Other thoughts: - Parking is easy, as there are plenty of street parking with meters outside and across the street. - Even if you order takeout, they charge for a paper bag. This is a first for me when ordering take out. I feel they should bake in the 25 cents or whatever into the cost and not make it a line item/option. I know its required by the city, but other take out restaurants don't ask if you want a bag...? - Food was good and I would've liked to give 3.5 stars, but thats not an option. The opportunity areas for the restaurant are definitely Poor air conditioning & Very slow service.

Yelp
Went there a few weeks ago for the first time. Small, clean, exceptional food. Staff were incredibly friendly and the food was delicious! The beef rolls were to die for - beef was tender and flavorful, the pancakes were homemade. Weeks later I am still dreaming of the sesame balls! Place is a gem, cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
As a Taiwanese American, I am always excited to try a new Taiwanese restaurant in the area! There aren't too many of them unfortunately. We tried many dishes and I really enjoyed everything despite it being takeout. I'd say my favorites were the popcorn chicken, spicy wontons, and beef noodle soup. The flavor was on point and really reminded me of the food I ate growing up - thanks Grandma! Also want to shoutout their drink menu. We ordered the mango milk with custard pudding and it was SO yummy. The creaminess of the milk + fresh mango was a match made in heaven. I was also excited to see imported drinks from Taiwan! What a special treat. The only gripe I have with this place is their logistics. They just opened in November 2022 so maybe they are figuring things out but they definitely need more tables and maybe a waiter. There are only 4, 4 top tables in the restaurant but there is a lot of empty or waiting area space. We chose to do takeout because the wait on a Thursday night was over 40 minutes due to lack of seating. Since there are only 4-tops, they also had to give one table to a person eating alone. Things to think about. I'd still come back tho! There are plenty of other dishes I'd like to give a try and happy to support a Taiwanese family owned business.

Yelp
Grandma's Kitchen is such a cute and homey space with comforting foods. SPACE: It's a small space with 5-6 tables that seat up to 4 people max. They have quite a big waiting area for those waiting on takeout or for a table. FOOD: I ordered the regular sized beef noodle soup with a braised egg. The beef was absolutely tender and delicious. The broth was light in flavor and flat noodles were great. Portion size is much smaller than expected and the flavor of the braised egg didn't fully come through. The popcorn was very delicious and will definitely have to get it again! DRINKS: I recommend getting toppings! The Lavender Milk Tea had a hint of lavender and was good. SERVICE: Definitely a family run business - everyone was so friendly!

Yelp
A neighborhood gem. Please just take all of my money. Food is authentic and prices, while on the high side, are reasonable. Newton is not a cheap place to rent a space for a restaurant like this. We have been here a couple times already and this is going to be a staple in our family takeout rotation. We have only tried the snacks (popcorn chicken, beef wrap) but everything so far has been delicious, tasty, and true to the authentic Taiwanese flavor. My mom is visiting from Taiwan and she was skeptical at first but wowed by the authenticity. Will be back (probably this week)!

Daniel Y.

Yelp
Good taste. You should try here before you leave Boston. FYI you have to check their business hour.

Yelp
Highly recommend! I frequently visit this restaurant, and I always order their beef noodle soup. The flavor is incredibly delicious, and it has become my go-to dish. The owners are a warm and friendly family who always remember my preferences and provide excellent service every time I visit. This is hands down my top recommendation for a restaurant in Newton! If you're looking for a great place to have a family gathering on the weekend, this is the spot! It's also perfect for a solo work meal.

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday late afternoon. Arrived at 2:15 (they close for a break 3-5 pm) and there was a 10 minute wait for a table. There are only 4 tables, but they have a cute waiting area in the front of the restaurant. They have a large counter area to make boba and other drinks. Reminds me of a smaller version of Dolphin Bay in Allston. They are understaffed, so service is not the highlight but staff are friendly. The food is delicious. We ordered the Beef Rib Soup, Beef Noodle Soup, and Strawberry wontons (they were out of the blueberry). Strawberry wontons were essentially strawberry cream cheese inside wonton wraps. Simple but tasty. I liked that the sauce they drizzled on top was not too sweet. The beef rib soup was very good. The short rib fell right off the bone. It was nice and tender. We ordered the soups medium spicy and it def had a kick. They use Thai chili peppers, so I would recommend not eating the peppers, just enjoy the broth lol. They use the same broth for the beef rib and the beef noodle soup. Broth was flavorful with depth. You can tell alot of work was put into the broth because it had that dark consistency throughout and the soup did not separate. At first glance the portion size looks on the smaller side but it is filling! Pricier than your average noodle soup bowls but worth it. Looking forward to trying other menu items next visit.

Yelp
Good for fast casual food. Prices are very decent. I recommend the mince rice bowl and chicken wings! Place is clean and comfy with plenty of seating.

Yelp
Fresh food made with care and passion. It's easy to miss if you drive by too quickly. The inside is well lit and very clean. Seating is limited to maybe 5 or 6 tables. They ran out of blueberries so they offered the Blueberry cream cheese wonton with strawberries instead. That's a good sign it's fresh ingredients. Unfortunately the wonton needed more time in the fryer. They came out slightly undercooked and little doughy. Chicken cutlet was really good. It's one of my favorite dishes growing up in an Italian household. This one was delicious. The spicy wonton noodles dish was not quite a soup. For some reason none of the sauce stuck to the noodles. The wontons were so good though. The beef soup broth was really delicious. Overall it's a great spot in Newton. The food is very fresh. I would like to come back and try more things. The chicken cutlet was my favorite. I might order the wonton appetizer too. That looked good.

Yelp
I hesitate to write this, because it is already a bit challenging to get a table here, but wow this is the best food in Newton, hands down. Grandma is actually in the kitchen, and the place is run by two other family members. Please be patient, as she is cooking solo! But even still, the food comes out relatively quickly, and every single thing we've had has been phenomenal. Andy could not be kinder or more welcoming. I sometimes wish they had more tables, but then I remember that with such a small staff, everything is exactly perfect for what it is!

Yelp
Best taiwanese street food restaurant. Small family owner business but the service was quick and super friendly. Theres only a few tables so on a busy day you will have to put your name down and wait up to 30 minutes but definitely worth the wait.

Yelp
First restaurant in years that I dined in twice a day. I know I miss my late grandmother. But on her steps are also a few notable elders who made a huge impact in my life. The one that specifically did so was 黄妈妈 (Auntie Huang) who was so stressed over the fact that I lived alone from family overseas when I first got here. She didn't believe I'd survive alone and so she always cooked and packed meals for me. Two decades later, long past and still grieving that loss, here I am taking time to remember her again - twice in a day. It's a small restaurant with limited seating but it is worth the wait. The food is good and the price is very cheap for what you get. But more than anything is the head chef is actually grandma herself. She does say hi when there is an opportunity to do so and she is the sweetest old lady you can find yourself to speak to. I will be back. Thank you again for being the first in decade be a double visit in a day.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Would definitely go back to try some of the other dishes. Best dish we tried today was the popcorn chicken; very well seasoned and just enough crunch. Portions were reasonable, just enough to get full (we finished everything without overfilling or leaving still hungry). The fish fillet was perfectly fried without drying the inside. The noodles were a good level of chewy. Space was also very clean.

Yelp
See pictures. Newly opened Taiwanese restaurant with decent food. Service is good with owner's children helping out, which was nice and fine with us. Popcorn chicken was pretty good. We did have to wait for about twenty minutes to get a seat. The place could be more efficient by having tables for two instead of only tables for up to four people. Just a suggestion as this place is still new.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant in Newton! The employees are so friendly and efficient, too. The portion sizes are perfect IMO; smaller than normal American restaurants but just enough to fill you without stuffing you. I've had almost everything on the menu and nothing misses: my favorites are the spice wonton noodles, salt and pepper pork chop plate, and the popcorn chicken. It can be hard to get seating but you usually don't have to wait too long and it's very clean and cute inside! Side detail: there are also real Taiwanese grandmas in the kitchen whipping up a storm. They came over to my table to chat one time and it was so sweet; one of them told us that after she retired she didn't want to just stay at home so she decided to open this restaurant and is now gracing all of our tastebuds!

Yelp
My family and I were in Boston during President's Day weekend and came across this place called Grandma's Kitchen in Newton on our first day and came back again before heading back to NYC. We enjoyed every dishes from popcorn chicken (my sons and wife's favorite), beef noodle soup (their favorite again :-)), beef rib noodle soup (my favorite), spicy wontons noodle, pork chop, minced pork rice, bean curd to fried mantou. Also their french fries are crispy and seasoned just right. Friendly service and a cozy spot for some tasty Taiwanese food. For sure we are going back again next time when we are in town.

Yelp
We have been coming here since the place opened and each dinning experience was progressively worse than the last. To start off you will always have to wait for a table and thats not becuse the place is crazy busy. its just really poorly ran. one thing stands out is the guy who works at the front desk does not give one single fuck. People have to come up to pay him because he never checks on the tables and the two children who work busing tables well shit they are just kids. We ordered drinks with our meal after 50 min of waiting the guy never made them. so we go to grab the check he kept the drinks on the bill after we told him we never even got them he shrugged it off and offered no apologies. The place shoots it self in the foot by not hiring the staff that would allow them to turn tables

Yelp
The food is delicious and the service is fast. The restaurant only has a few tables so it doesn't to time your visit around busy hours. Do head their warning on the hot level for the popcorn chicken.

Yelp
Always close. Newton is so far away from me and every time I took 20 minutes to get here. Today is the third time that I come here and see the you are closing. Why not update your status in Yelp? I think you don't care about your customers......BTW, the food is really good. i love it

Yelp
a small, authentic taiwanese restaurant that hits the spot! there are only 3 tables so it may be hard getting a spot, but we had no problem on a sunday. popcorn chicken 10/10: flavorful and was freshly fried, as it came out super hot inside. $7 for a good portion braised beef noodle soup 9.5/10: the medium spice has a good kick. personally i'd enjoy the no spice a lot more. the flavor was really good and the beef was super tender. my only complaint is that there is too little vegetable in it pork chop noodle soup 8/10: the pork was well cooked and flavorful. the soup was average, but good. had the same issue with the lack of veggies overall, the prices were good for what you get. parking is pretty easy as there is a lot of street parking. super homey feel of the place!

Yelp
This is a cozy & quiet place. The vibes & food are just like it's name, grandma's kitchen. Very good comfort food, like how your grandma would make. The noodle soup was delicious, however the portion was small. The apps & boba were pleasantly decent as well. But the noodle soup was definitely a highlight & must try here.

Yelp
I have been meaning to try this place, so I went on a Saturday afternoon with some friends. There was plenty of street parking available in the vicinity. The restaurant is not that big and was packed. We left our name down and waited about 30-40 minutes before being seated. We shared the popcorn chicken, and I ordered the braised beef noodle soup (medium) and the blended mango milk. My friend wanted the blended taro milk, but they were out of stock, so he settled for avocado milk. I have no complaints about the popcorn chicken. It tasted like I expected it to taste, and I enjoyed the crispy texture. I did kind of wish it had more meat though. The beef noodle soup was amazing. It was not heavy but had the perfect amount of flavoring. i really liked how I could choose the spice level. I kind of wish they had more vegetables and meat in the dish, but that did not stop me from enjoying it. The mango milk was amazing. It looked really light in color, but surprisingly each sip carried the taste of sweet mango. It was very easy to drink and paired well with the meal. Unfortunately, the avocado milk was a disappointment. The flavor of avocado was not as prominent in the drink, making it disappointing in comparison to the mango one. This place is locally run; you can tell by how there are children helping at the store with taking orders or handling the register. The owner is very sweet! He took the time to sit down and receive feedback about our meals while also getting to know us. He was very grateful that we took the time to purposely come to Newton to try the food. Overall, this was a great experience. If you are craving hearty noodle soups, I highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
Wow, what an incredible find! My girlfriend and I stumbled upon Grandma's Kitchen for lunch, and we were absolutely thrilled to finally discover authentic Taiwanese food right here in Boston. Trust us when we say we've explored many other places, but none have captured the true essence of Taiwanese flavors quite like this hidden gem. As someone who's had Taiwanese cuisine from Southern California and even Taiwan itself, we can confidently vouch for Grandma's Kitchen. This place is 100% legit and if you've ever had Taiwanese food from SoCal, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The spiciness here actually lives up to its name - it's actually spicy! The popcorn chicken has that perfect, addictive crunch, the spicy powder is on point, and it truly delivers that mouthwatering spice we've been missing in many of the places around here that just deep fry their chicken and lightly toss on spicy powder. Beef noodle soup is absolutely bomb - super tender meat and has that spicy kick to it. Finally, a place that gets the boba right. The boba here actually tastes like real tea, and it's downright delicious. Hands down one of the best bobas in the Boston area. Grandma's Kitchen gives off an authentic, family-friendly atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. The service was outstanding, going beyond the norm. It's the perfect spot to satisfy those Taiwanese food cravings, whether you're in the mood for a quick bite or a leisurely meal. Needless to say, we're already planning our next return to Grandma's Kitchen. The food, service, and overall experience exceeded our wildest expectations. Grandma's Kitchen has captured our hearts and taste buds, and we can't wait to come back.

Yelp
We got takeout last night for the first time from and really enjoyed it. Note that sometimes you'll call on and the phone will just ring. I suspect they're just very busy which is a good sign. We loved the beef noodle soup, popcorn chicken, beef pancakes, and spicy wontons. We went with medium spice and that's about right for us with a good burn that doesn't mask the flavor and doesn't make you cry.

Yelp
I honestly wanted to give this place 3.5 stars and debated about 3 or 4. Here is my opinion on what is good and what's bad. What is good: Food wise: The rice plates is incredible. Popcorn chicken, chicken wings, Pork cutlet, and mince pork rice was also really good. Mince pork could be a dish that Taiwanese places get judged on. I find the blended tea and regular tea very good on a hot day. The price point is more than reasonable. What isn't: It's a bit brutal waiting there for a table because there is 1 host that also is your waiter while making the drinks. It's really frustrating because you can see a table not get clean on wait longer to have your orders placed. Can the restaurant just hire a wait staff, just 1 wait staff? The braised beef noodle soup was quite disappointing at best. I find it a bit water down and might benefit from a much longer cook time. That's tough because beef noodle soup is a very Taiwanese dish and really wished it was better. The milk tea is average.

Yelp
Food is good and you can definitely tell this is a family run establishment. Portions are on the lighter side but I think it's just right. You can tell they take their dishes seriously. Expect to wait because it's all made to order. Call ahead for take out and save yourself the wait time. Advice to management: print a menu that's easier to read.

Yelp
Grandmas is excellent! The food is out of this world, the staff is friendly, the atmosphere is inviting And best of all the restaurant is SUPER clean!
