Best Places to Eat in Walla Walla, Washington | Eater Seattle

"This family-owned establishment has been a town favorite for over 10 years. From the tortas to the comforting soups to the chiles rellenos to tortillas made onsite, each dish is prepared with care in downtown’s most unassuming dining room." - Matthew Lombardi

Very interesting place, the flavors of this place is far from traditional Mexican food. The guy there would not let us know where or what style of food this is but it’s not your traditional Mexican food. Food was decent plenty of room to set, the guy is the founders son, not very personable nor does he share any information of their history, which we were very interested in the style of cooking that he would not share sad! Food was decent though can I recommend this place, not sure has a very different style of Mexican food I’m guessing very southern Mexico style which I’m not used to. Food was not great, but it wasn’t bad. I’m glad we stopped just to experience it.

This is something far beyond every other Mexican restaurant in the area. The dishes span the wide range of cuisine in Mexico and offer a great alternative to the more common northern Mexican cuisine. The recipes are all a reflection of the family that serves them. Service is not only outstanding but is evident of the care and pride behind every tasty dish on the menu.

Such amazing flavors..... Carne asada wasn't super flavorful but was tender and delicious. Their pork was phenomenal! Try it. Totally worth the price.

The owners moved to Walla Walla from Mexico City and are so sweet. Their food is delicious. We sat outside with our dogs who unfortunately had 3 seconds of misbehavior that resulted in our drinks falling on our food and our laps. The owners could not have been more kind and understanding. They quickly helped us clean up and replaced our food. They told us to laugh about it and be sure to come back. We will!

Google
Freshly prepared with wholesome ingredients literally made by Abuelita, as pictured. Wonderful selections of not so typical choices. Large portions! Good value. The guacamole is creamy and delicious! The mild green tomatillo salsa is absolutely wonderful! Home made unique coarse ground tortilla chips. Just passing through, and I wish I could have tried More than one item.

Google
Outstanding food! Handmade tortilla are excellent. Mole was delicious. Sangria was filled with all sorts of fruit. Visited on a very busy day (Mother's Day) and I've never seen a server work harder with such grace. All customers were patient and it was clear there were a lot of regulars there that knew the food was worth waiting for. We're definitely coming back next time we're in town. Live music was such a nice bonus!

Google
This restaurant is amazing. The care and attention showered on us (party of 9) was phenomenal. The food is even better. I had the fish burrito. Thicker than my forearm. The flavors will keep me coming back again and again.

Yelp
We had reservations at a different highly rated restaurant but came across Grandma's Kitchen. The ratings made us change our minds and we were so happy we did! We ordered the Salpicon Salad, the Pork in Pipian Burrito and chips and sauce. The chips were light and crisp and the 2 sauces were tasty. One was hot and the other mild. The hot salsa is spicy and has an amazing Smokey goodness to it. We were told that Grandma made this! My salad came and was made without any dairy after our server and Grandma's son, learned I had a lactose sensitivity. It was huge and beyond delicious. The wild greens were fresh and the chicken in the salpicon was shredded so uniformly and perfectly. "Mama shredded it", is what we were told. The blend of flavors in the salpicon accompanied by the pepper sauce and vinegar were subtle and delicious. It was healthy and so filling and satisfying. There was also an ample amount of avocados carefully laid on top of the dish. I was in heaven. Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the massive burrito. Usually he doesn't finish a typical burrito, but this one was enjoyed to the last bite. He raved about the blend of flavors and textures. We were seriously stuffed. We had to try the flan and took it to go. Just ate it and the texture and flavor is another exciting adventure for your taste buds! I wish we had this family restaurant in Seattle. Top quality ingredients melded together for such an enjoyable and healthy homestyle treat! Do not hesitate to go to Grandma's place! She is adorable too as she visits each table to ensure the food is being enjoyed!

Yelp
THE FOOD WAS AMAZING! There was one guy running the whole restaurant when I went with a group late in the evening. He was willing to spend time joking with us and then made our food exactly to order! 10/10 the best Mexican in Walla Walla area and the greatest staff!

Yelp
There are a lot of Mexican restaurants to choose from in Walla Walla, but this is the best. Great authentic food wonderfully prepared, good prices, and the nicest restaurant owner in town, as well as a valued supporter of the local community. Don't miss it.

Charlie S.

Yelp
In my opinion, it's hard for a Mexican restaurant to stand out. There are a lot of very good ones, but this one did stand out as one of the better ones

Yelp
It's not a fancy restaurant but a cute and cozy one. We first came by but couldn't find a table. We were lucky to get a table without waiting when we came the second time. There's only one man working here. He does everything, from setting up tables to cleaning up, from taking orders to cooking food. I am impressed that he is able to take care of everything when it's always busy. Customers keep coming in and making requests. I am not a Mexican food person, but I would definitely give this restaurant a big thumb up! The burrito tasted so delicious. The size was quite huge, so I guess two can just share one burrito. The price is also reasonable. I also love Agua de Jamaica, which is so good. If you have a chance to visit here, I would highly recommend Agua de Jamaica to go along with any burrito you choose. Because only one man is working here, sometimes it may be challenging to get his attention. Sometimes some customers just decided to do by themselves, such as setting up their tables or adding chairs to their tables, but the owner didn't like that, which is also understandable. When I was there, I did witness the owner was mad at one customer who had moved the chairs without telling the owner. But because customers are not getting attention they deserve, I do think the owner should be more clear about what the customer can do or can't do.

Yelp
My wife and I recently moved to Walla Walla from Texas and we honestly expected Mexican food to be disappointing here. As of today, we stand corrected by an insanely beautiful meal and experience at Grandma's Kitchen. Starting off, we realized the service would be a bit slow: only one dude working in the whole place. He is serving each table, taking orders AND making all the food, including corn tortillas fresh to order. We were right, the service was a little slow, but he was an absolute sweetheart and we were more than willing to wait--based on photos we had seen of the food, we were in for a treat. Our beers and chips & salsa arrived at the table pretty much at the expected rate of service. Salsas were good. Chips seemed store-bought, but good enough. Beers were cold--we're rolling. Food comes out and we immediately knew we were about to get smacked in the face by some delicious tacos. One bite in and my wife and I were looking at each other like we hit the jackpot. This place is so legit and Walla Walla is lucky to have it. We agreed that this was now our favorite restaurant in the city. Come here. Be patient. Be thankful. You are in for something truly special. ¡Viva Grandma's Kitchen!

Yelp
Great food and amazing people. Pollo tacos were some of the best around. Burrito was full of flavor and great portions. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Good, honest food made by a really hard working kind person. Love the story behind the restaurant and each meal is made with love and intention.

Yelp
Good home style Mexican food. Just what you would expect from Grandmas / Nanas Kitchen. Nice quiet atmosphere with very good food and service. Definitely a nice place to enjoy Mexican food in Walla Walla.

Yelp
Lovely little Mexican joint. Two people working the entire restaurant; a man and what appears to be his mother. Adorable! Great mole, awesome fish, impressive guacamole, good music, reasonable price, and beer is available. Will return!

Lorri B.

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful fresh made fish tacos and nachos with a great accoustic guitar singer!

Yelp
I ordered cheese dip with chorizo , horchata and flan. This possibly is the worse cheese dip I have ever had from a Mexican style restaurant. The only thing good was the horchata. It cost me 40$ to get cheese dip, flan... and horchata . And the only edible thing was the flan

Yelp
I came in here one night for dinner and was very impressed! It's very cozy yet there is a good variety of food on the menu. I ordered chips and salsa and the burrito (one of the two vegetarian options). The burrito was HUGE. I mean ginormous! It was amazing and came with a really delicious sauce in addition to the incredibly salsa spicy I had. The contents were spilling out a little bit it was so big and full of delicious rice, beans and veggies. My server was very sweet and checked in with me throughout the amazing meal. Sadly they were out of horchata but I will be back soon to have a glass!

Yelp
What a great find in Walla Walla! After years of living local, we moved 10 years ago and only visit now occasionally. Our past favorite for lunch was fish tacos from The Worm Ranch/Dora's Deli, but we've been disappointed recently with them for various reasons. Grandma's Kitchen has that same feeling of authenticity but with a higher level of hospitality. I've traveled extensively for business in Mexico and the dishes we tried had the same flavors and textures I remember. My husband had a burrito and quickly claimed ' I think this might be the best burrito I've ever had'. We will eat there again during our next Walla Walla visit.

Yelp
Food is very good. You do have to wait but worth it. Side street but worth it. Great for lunch, call ahead.

Yelp
Okay, I'm going to beef up the rating for this one. It's been a little while since we were in Walla Walla and our first time here we wanted to try Grandma's Kitchen but they were never open. It was very frustrating because by reading the hours on from Google and Yelp they should have been open. But we tried going here on our last trip to Walla Walla and indeed they were open. So we parked the car quickly and wanted to make sure we could get lunch here because the food is highly praised. We sat down and I ordered a burrito. For the filling I went a vegetarian route instead of any meat and got cactus as the main filling inside along with rice and all kinds of other fresh ingredients. The burrito was then drizzled with a chile sauce with sour cream on the side. The burrito was absolutely fantastic. It was so fresh and flavorful and the cactus in the burrito added a very good dimension of flavor to it. I absolutely devoured this burrito it was so amazing. In addition to that I got some Hibiscus Tea that they had on the menu. I have had this kind of tea before at Mexican restaurants but never one as good as this one. That too was amazing! Steve got some chicken tacos and yes... those were equally amazing as well. So very delicious! The hours are still kind of complicated and not fully posted on the door. Google says that they are open from 12, noon to 9 pm but that is not completely correct. I believe that the gentleman working here said that they are open from 12-3 pm and then open again at 5pm and then I imagine up to 9. Working with these hours is totally worth it however because the food is so very good. My suggestion to best land in at this place is right at noon or slightly after and then again around 5 pm. They do appear to be closed on Mondays.

Yelp
Delicious preparations from Abuela's hands. Hospitable, welcoming service. A bright and cozy space. Be prepared to wait; good food takes time.

Yelp
The place was recommended by one of the locals. We ordered the pibil (burrito) and nopales (torta). The service was good and the food amazing! The place is authentic, will definitely visit again. Gracias

Yelp
Family run Mexican restaurant with excellent food. I had pork chops and also a Tingo beef tostado. High quality food and flavor. Real coconut lemonade drink and good service. No complaints. I recommend this place.

Yelp
The thing that makes this place so special is how FRESH the ingredients are. I never leave with that heavy feeling some other restaurants give you--just complete satisfaction. This is certainly the best Mexican food in Walla Walla, and perhaps the best Mexican food I've ever had in a restaurant. Their corn tortillas for tacos are freshly made and wow does it show. I love the elite corn tacos. My husband loves the mole special on Fridays. We often leave with tortillas and green salsa (amazing) to go to savor for the next few days. I'm vegetarian and there are several delicious dishes that work well for me, which could easily be made without the cheese for vegans. Don't come if you're in a hurry. This is a place to relax and savor.

Yelp
This place is NEVER open! Been trying to eat here for the past 2 weeks. I've tried different times of day and they haven't been there every time.

Yelp
Amazing flavors. Not your typical Mexican restaurant. Great service as well. The red salsa is really hot. Enjoy.

Yelp
Fantastic!!!!! Stop at this place !!!!! We had the tacos (chicken and corn) and special pork green mole huarache along with the chips and guacamole - every bite was amazing ! Wish we could transport this restaurant to the Bay Area We ate once here but would love to eat here everyday and try everything on the menu and especially the specials

Yelp
Small, eclectic and oh so good food in downtown Walla Walla

Kimberly Y.

Yelp
Great service very welcoming. We were greeted and seated with such kindness. The food is amazing. Fresh authentic Mexican food. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Incredible! Each plate beautifully composed and so delicious. Very small family owned restaurant serving authentic Mexican casual cuisine, cold beers and coconut lemonade. Appetizer of queso was not only tasty but again.... Presentation was spot on. No detail overlooked with the plating ... lots of love in each plate!

Yelp
CLOSED when we tried to go there for lunch on 4/29/22 (Saturday). No mention of it on their phone message so not sure if they are gone for good or not but call before you go!

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow!! I can not say enough to describe how amazing and delicious our experience here has been. We ordered take out and the service was amazing and they got our order correct and unlike some take out it was plentiful and well packaged. But best of all everything we ordered was amazing! We all said, even our kids, that it was one of the best Mexican meals we have ever had. The tortilla soup was my favorite! But everything was so flavorful. And you can't beat all the food you get for the price! Also they have wonderful vegetarian options!

Susan H.

Yelp
Most amazing tacos!!! I cannot express how much I love this place. I had a chicken and carna asada taco and being from PHX this place blows anything I have had there away!!!!! Seriously if you are in Walla Walla you need to go
google avatar

Deonne S.

Yelp
Amazing food, hospitality. A must go to place if you go to downtown walla walla. My friend and I stumbled upon this place for lunch and were so delighted we stopped. The owner is a very humble and gracious man and is very talented in the kitchen. We will definitely be back to visit.

Millie J.

Yelp
Great authentic food!! Loved the homemade corn tortillas, the chips and guacamole are fabulous. We loved it!
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
I wanted to believe the hype based off the reviews and I want to be nice to grandma but I just didn't taste what people were tasting. The only meal I did enjoy was the guacamole and we ordered the large with a small handful of chips we had to keep asking for more. I ordered the burrito and sope which were alright nothing really stood out. Haven't had a burrito with lettuce in it since going to Taco Bell and a side of lays potato chips threw me off. The service was slow but kinda expected and we were in no rush. Like I said I really wanted to love this place and being from out of town I had high hopes but the food was just average for myself.
google avatar

Doug J.

Yelp
Must Try!! If I could give this restaurant 6 stars it well deserves it. By far some of the best and most authentic Mexican food I've ever had. The Tinga Beef, Pork and Pollo were fantastic and they're paired with different salsas that accentuate the flavors. Thanks for the wonderful meal.
google avatar

Jo A.

Yelp
Muey Bueno!! The food was authentic and delicious ... the service was spot on... friendly and attentive.. and they were busy!.... the ambiance is very simple. Everything we ordered was so so good!... habenero salsa was spectacular and the perfect compliment to our tacos... the right amount of spice and flavor! Definitely coming back!!

Yelp
This was a wonderful find for us. I had two fish tacos with fresh pineapple salsa for $4.50 each. Amazing price point. Wonderful guacamole, 2 fabulous salsas. A green + spicey. My tortilla made at order, by hand pressed. Best corn tortilla that I have ever had. I finished off with homemade mango pudding for dessert & my friend had the flan. They have a great choice menu for a small place, offering a daily special. My friend had the special, chicken enchilada with chili verde & (chayote squash) soup. We each enjoyed our meal, desserts, the atmosphere & the service. Nice presentation. I am dismayed to read reviews like "nope, too slow". Would you expect that in your grandmothers kitchen? I think such a reviewer would be happiest at a larger commercial restaurant. This food is the utmost fresh. Fine & simple ingredients. If you come, plan for a proper home cooked meal & you may even get wonderful conversation with the people who work hard here. I highly recommend Grandmas Kitchen. I am a visitor, never heard of the place & I would come back. Two of us, came on a Sunday early evening for dinner. The lovely spot is small with about 5-6 tables. I can tell you there were 5 tables of us, 12 customers total. Plus 2 walk in take out orders! The owner/chef was certainly not slow. The fact that he accommodated all customers, cooked, waited on & served that many in this small spot was an amazing feat. We arrived about 6:15 @ left at 7:30. This is no fast food restaurant. Any self appointed foodie would enjoy this spot.
google avatar

Dale L.

Yelp
Seven of us had dinner there this evening and we all agreed it was the best Mexican food we had ever had. In particular, the nachos were outstanding. They work so hard and serve terrific food. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
We came late right before closing. I am assuming the cook and the woman are Grandma and her son. They were so sweet and very attentive to us. The food was just ok, it was not bad, it was made fresh, it was fine.... but just fine. It seems that every place we yelped about in Walla Walla had a 4 star rating, which being from Tacoma means it's going to be REALLY good. This was not bad at all, but for the price and portion size I wouldn't give it 4 Stars. There are a ton of Mexican places to try in Walla Walla, so while I'm glad we tried it, I would try a new spot next time.
google avatar

Flip M.

Yelp
I had absolutely amazing meal here from one of the most amazing people I have met on my trip! Manny isn't just kind and genuine host, but an amazing cook!

Eli T.

Yelp
The food is amazing. One of the first restaurants I visited when I first moved to Walla Walla.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Very authentic food and so tasty! Grandma's Kitchen's food made us travel to Mexico while touring Walla Walla! Highly recommend this place! Make sure you order the flan dessert to cap off a delicious meal!

Shawn J.

Yelp
sooooooooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooood. I would eat here everyday if i lived in town

Patrick S.

Yelp
We had an amazing meal. Authentic and delicious, and great service. My wife had a quesadilla, I had a torta, both were really great.
google avatar

Jeanne P.

Yelp
Yum. The flavors are still mingling in my mouth. I had the cheese dip with Chorizo... It comes with chips AND flour and corn tortillas and is fantastic!! Pretty sure they are handmade. We both had the sangria (also great) and for the main course a tostada (also great). The menu is short and to the point...so you can't go wrong!

Zachary W.

Yelp
Didn't answer phone, told us we would be served immediately, didn't take our order for 20 mins, waited another hour for food. People were served that arrived after us and left before we even got our food.
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
THANK YOU fellow Yelpers for guiding us to Cucina de la Abuela for a wonderfully authentic Mexican meal. My wife and I each had the sopes, she with a combination of pollo and the cactus and mine with pibil. Both very tasty. I liked the fact that prices were appropriate and portions right sized. We shared an incredible flan dessert which was awesome. The owner showed us around the place afterwards, talked about his plans for future events and gave us tips on what to do in Walla Walla during our visit. Super nice of him. This place was a great find.
google avatar

Ves S.

Yelp
Was in town for a basketball tournament and found Grandma's on Yelp. Service does take a little while but don't let that deter you. The food is definitely worth the wait. The server is super nice and has a great sense of humor. Grandma herself works there and can be seen actively involved with the running of the business. My two young baller boys weren't too daring and only ordered nachos which they loved. My daughter got the elote tostada which was also very pleasing. I ordered the pork posole. It was divine! Tender pork with white hominy soup. It isn't too spicy and comes with seasonings on the side. It's a huge portion and I barely made a dent. Overall a great experience and I will definitely be back again.
google avatar

Austin B.

Yelp
If you're in a hurry you might want to choose a different dinner spot, but if you have the time to relax and enjoy a meal with the people you're with this place is great! The same guy takes your order, cooks your food and provides regular service at your table. I came here with my daughter after a track meet, and it was great to just sit and visit with her while we waited for our food. She got a pork burrito and I got the Nepalese (cactus) burrito. They were both delicious! Can't wait to go back. Everything was very fresh, and well prepared. You can tell the chef puts a lot of love into his food!
google avatar

Tawny M.

Yelp
Well we would have liked to try this place, however this is the second time we attempted. Open sign lit, within business hours but no one home! Not sure how they stay in business!
google avatar

Yelp
We've been looking for a great Mexican food spot in Walla Walla since we moved from Southern California and we found it! We literally saw Grandma in the kitchen making our fresh tortillas and ALL the food was absolutely stunning!! Fresh tortillas! Fresh guacamole! The pork, the chicken, the steak, ALL soooo damn good. This will be our spot for Mexican food from now on. Hands down some of the best food I've ever had.
