Chef-About-Town Sam Smith Shares His Favorite Portland Restaurants - Eater Portland

"Grant’s Philly Cheesesteak on Sandy is the only place that reminds me of Philadelphia, where I lived for nine years." - Thom Hilton

The Best Philly Cheesesteaks in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"With a simple menu that declares the cheesesteak is sovereign here, Grant’s has been offering Portlanders a taste of Philadelphia since 2003, in its charming original location on far Northeast Sandy as well a newer outpost in the Alphabet District. Cheesesteak options range from subtle cheese variations to more daring alternatives like the fajita-and-cream-cheese cheesesteak. Unlike some local rivals, the cheese is dealt with a lighter hand, letting the seasoned beef and other toppings sing brighter. For dessert, Grant’s offers Philadelphia’s own TastyKake products, like its Juniors and Kandy Kakes." - Nathan Williams

Ordered ahead. Original with steak. Sandwich was ready before my requested ready time. Cashier was friendly and packed up my sandwich in front of me. Fresh ingredients. It smelled so good that I started eating it before leaving the parking lot. Small cozy environment. Limited parking.

Came to Portland for Anniversary weekend. Just got to town and hungry. Welcomed when we walked in, spoke with the friendly lady working, very pleasant. Got food to go, AMAZING!! Car ride was torturous with the car smelling so good. Great food and friendly service, with personalized touch. We will be back

I think Grant was working the front and his mom working the back. They were quick and served enough fries for two people. The Cheesesteaks were delicious. I would have no problem going back there when in the mood for a cheesesteak!

Google
I honestly think they’re racist at this place! I had a really disappointing experience here. I went in to get a half size Philly cheesesteak, but my card declined. I politely told the cashier I’d go to my car to grab some cash, and she gave me a weird, uncomfortable look. Thankfully, a kind woman behind me offered to pay for my meal. and I truly appreciated that. However, I ended up waiting over 30 minutes for just one sandwich. The employee prioritized preparing the large order for the woman who helped me (which I understand, and I’m happy she got treated well), but it still didn’t feel right that a single half-size sandwich was pushed to the side. Even worse, they served people sitting at tables before me, and I just stood there feeling completely ignored and unwanted. In the end, I didn’t even eat the sandwich. I couldn’t trust it. I didn’t feel safe giving it to someone else either, like someone experiencing homelessness, because I honestly questioned whether it had been tampered with. I would never recommend this place based on how I was treated. But I’ll always remember the kindness of the woman who stepped in when I needed help. God bless her

I love this place every time I come in town I make sure to stop by! Have eaten Genos in Philadelphia and they have nothing on Grants! I’d give more stars if I could!!

Google
Guys at the front counter are always super nice and grateful for your business. Vibe is cool and laid back, feels like a place you’d go in for lunch a couple times a week and get to chatting with the counter guy if you lived nearby. Food is fantastic too, I don’t get phillys around here that much cause they usually suck but this place just does it right. The bread, the peppers, the caramelized onion😍 Steak is great too not just shavings it’s semi thick but still easy to bite through.

Google
Visiting from out of town and stopped by here (our hotel is only about 10 mins away by the airport). They were very welcoming, Motley Crue was playing in the background (cool!), and the Cheesesteaks and fries we had were delicious. Seems like a great local place to grab a bite to eat!

Google
First off, I am not from Philly. So I will not compare this to a true Philly Cheese Steak, as I can't speak on authenticity. Just looking at the building screams "this place contains good food" but the second you open the door, you get punched in the face with that delicious steak smell, it's intoxicating. Service was good, and yes, they DO take credit cards. The sandwich was tightly packed and unwrapping it was like Christmas. It was fresh and hot, cheesy and dripping juice. I got mine with cheese whiz. The bite was great, the bread was good, the meat was juicy and cheesy. It was absolutely loaded with meat and cheese. The grilled onions were delicious. You should definitely check this place out, and support them. Portland, you are lucky to have them.

Yelp
We stopped on a recommendation from a friend, we both got the cheesesteak with whiz and we split an order of fries. A lot of people are saying this place is overpriced, but small restaurants all over have raised prices, it's a tough market so I thought the 40 dollar price was more than fair for the quantity and quality. We came near closing time so there wasn't a ton of people but it was clean enough and the staff was very friendly. The sandwiches themselves were delicious! They had plenty of flavor, the meat was just right, and the bread was awesome. The fries were cooked perfectly and heavily salted ( which is a good thing ) and the fry sauce was unique and also very good. We will return again and recommend it to anyone looking for a great cheesesteak.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Very dark inside. Better to get to-go Food: The size of the sandwich is okay. It's pretty messy and I thought it was merely okay. Definitely does not compare to a Philly cheesesteak but I guess it's among the better options in Portland Price: Way too expensive for a 12 inch cheesesteak. About $5-7 more than you'd pay on the East Coast Service: Average Parking: Street parking

Yelp
Authentic cheesesteak (Pat's for me, but the suburbs are the best) right off of south street. Right kind of meat, cooked and cut the way it's supposed to be. The bread is amazing, soft and fresh. The sweet red cherry peppers are fine, but they don't have hot red cherry peppers. Can't hold it against them, so many places don't. But this hoagie is good enough to bring my own hot cherry peppers, or get to go and add at home! Fries are hot, crisp, salty and fresh. Service was great, the owner unless I miss my guess. The space was clean, the table level and neat.

Yelp
The portions are huge, definitely could be split or shared if you wanted to, but both items I got were flavorful. The fries were generously coated in cheese, steak, and jalapeños, and the hotdog was massive, compared to my arm. The hotdog had spice and savory flavors to it. I would definitely recommend and will be coming back to try even more. It's a very chill and welcoming place to enjoy your food. I chose to go, and the food remained hot even after a 20-minute drive.

Yelp
Stumbled on this place by accident and ate one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life!! I'll definitely be back. I'd even go out of my way to eat here.
google avatar

Jason V.

Yelp
They're sloppy, they're messing, and their doggone delicious! That said, these cheesesteaks are better consumed with a knife and fork, instead of attempting to handle them as a traditional sandwich. My to-go order consisted of a whole Son of Hibachi, a half Whiz, and a half Bleu American Buffalo, to split among the whole family. Once home, each sandwich was section into enough portions to be shareable, so everyone could pick their preference. All of the sandwiches were well received, with the Whiz being the majority favorite, if only just: the Blue American Buffalo was right on its heels! The woman who took my order was knowledgeable, helpful and sweet. There isn't much room to dine-in here, so pretty much any order is going to be to-go, and as is the case with all cheesesteak places, it won't be particularly cheap. Still, that just means you can enjoy being fat and happy from the comfort of your own home!

Yelp
Thought I'd stop by since I work close and it had some good reviews. Plus, I haven't had a Philly Cheesesteak in a long time. However, although the place is cute, I wasn't super impressed. Main gripe: it's outrageously overpriced. For 10.25, I got a half sandwich and it was pretty much the size of a hot dog. I was expecting at least something the size of a Subway sandwich cause that's what 10.25 should get you. The fries were also pretty underwhelming. Decent at first but give it 10 minutes and they're soggy. Taste of the sandwich was good, though, I'll give it that. Overall, for the cost, size of the sandwich, and the $20 I paid to get a sandwich, fries, and a drink, it's kinda nuts. I probably wouldn't visit again unfortunately. Everyone seems to love it too, not sure why.

Yelp
I've gotten some really good sandwiches here over the years but had not ordered in some time. I called in my order today after checking the menu on the website, https://grantsphillycheesesteaks.com/menu.html, and when I arrived to pick it up, the price was $18.65, over $5 more than the price listed on the website($13.50) for a single whole steak sandwich. When I double checked myself and showed the counter person the price on their website, the response was "Well this is the price now" I ended up leaving hungry and annoyed. No idea when the price was raised but maybe fix it on the website as well? Surely I can't be the first person to point this out to them. I guess they're lucky the shop is in Portland. If they pulled this bait and switch in South Philly they'd be out of business.

Yelp
Maybe I came in on a bad day, or maybe Portland is just used to subpar food and everyone gets high ratings. Nevertheless this is by far one of the most below average Philly cheesesteaks I've had in my 26 years of life, and the most regretful 27 dollar purchase I've ever made. Yes, you read that right...27 Whole US dollars for an underwhelming cheesesteak with a side of underwhelming fries, and a coke which was actually the highlight of the meal until I threw it at the wall out of frustration. Ok im kidding, I actually forgot to put it in the cup holder and it spilled all over the floor of my truck. I was vexed and stressed and not in the right state of mind after that first bite. I even tried dipping it in their ranch and fry sauce hoping it'd make it a little bit better. I'll be honest and say it does looks quite appetizing, but as the old saying goes; it's all about the inside that matters.. Their service was great tho, good people fr
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Always great. Cheese wiz Philly the best I've tried but the cream cheese plain Philly was really good and you have to order the cheese fries, they are always piping hot and smothered in cheese.

Yelp
It actually makes me sad to write this but they've gone way downhill. Whole is $17.50 and I'm told they're going up from there. I asked why and was told food costs. Let's say they're way on the high side of $8 into each sandwich. That's an amazing margin in food service. Problem is, everything about the sandwich is subpar now. Meat is way different and has spent a lot of time in the freezer. Peppers are good but they skimp. Bread isn't the same. Less cheese. Meal doesn't include their chips anymore. I'm afraid if you all don't step it up you won't make it. I don't want to see that. Good luck!

Kathy S.

Yelp
Nice, hot steak sandwich with a very good roll. Our order was ready within only a few minutes. The steak sandwich was large enough to share with my housemate & some worthy morsels for the doggie. The complimentary chips were quite enjoyable, too. The restaurant appeared clean inside & the workers seemed to be very efficient.

Daylees G.

Yelp
We finished hiking for the day and were looking for a place to grab food before heading home. This place was a comfy little spot with great customer service and delicious food. I recommend getting half a Philly and the cheesy steak fries as it is a lot of food. Would definitely come again.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered a to go order of 5 sandwiches for my family. The sandwiches were tasty but i felt like the filling was a little skimpy. I paid nearly $10 for the half size sandwich, approx 5 inches, with a little amount of meat/cheese/onion. I was surprised since I didn't see this tendency in the Yelp reviews. The only consideration I will give them is that they were busy during the lunch hour rush and this contributed to the oversight. BTW, I would've given Grant's 3 stars but my sister's vegetarian sandwich was overstuffed with grilled veggies and cheese. It was twice as heavy as the sandwiches with meat. Sooo, embrace vegetables and get the vegetarian cheesesteak when you go to Grant's. That is a sure thing for those who like that sort of thing.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Huge disappointment. I used to go to their other location in NW when I worked at the hospital. This place tastes nothing like those experiences. The meat was old and frozen, and the bun was soggy and wet. It barely had any cheese! We didn't get any veggies on our sandwiches other than some marinated peppers, and the woman didn't ask if we wanted any either. The fries were gross and soggy with cheap Sysco cheese ontop. My wife asked for lettuce on the side and the lettuce was rotten and inedible. For the price of 15 to 20 bucks for a cheesesteak, the quality does not come any where near where it should for the price. We would have gone to Steakadelphia today if they weren't closed. Go there if you want a real Philly. Or you can visit Grant's if you want to eat a school cafeteria cheesesteak.

Andrea O.

Yelp
Still the best cheesesteaks I've tried. However, the price increase these last couple years has stopped me from eating here more than twice a year. The price cannot be justified anymore. I also wished they'd update their website information--pricing is old and their phone numbers for the NW and Sandy location are switched around.

Yelp
This has been a fav of mine for sometime. In spite of the Covid, that they don't do in/dining anymore, no homemade chips - I still find their Philly Cheese sandwich to be one of the better ones in PDX. Plenty of meat, peppers, flavor and mushrooms (extra add-on ) in a soft roll is great. Now they fo wrap it up hot and the resulting steam does make the bread a little soggy if you don't get to it right away. So, take it out to your car and start eating.

Mark P.

Yelp
Delicious, and authentic! Amply fried onions and peppers and nice thinly sliced beef. Goopy delight!

Eric M.

Yelp
Grant's is a bit of a hidden gem. We came across it by our accident as kind of off the beaten path, but man was it a great stop. The sandwiches are very tasty. What really blew me away though were the sliders for the kids. Had one left over that my kiddo didn't eat and, wow, it was so so good. I would highly recommend going out of your way to try this spot.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
I spent $53 I got two burgers and 2 cheesesteaks all was beyond soggy. The mushrooms on the burger were still raw, the $10.50 sandwich I ordered looked like it came from 7-11 don't waste your money. A good friend told me about this place I ordered while I was out and he said it's not what it use to be. Look at the old reviews this place at one time was good. Again it's over priced for the quality and portions....I don't know how they are still in business??? GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Melanie C.

Yelp
Im from Texas and travel alot and this is one of the best Philly cheesesteaks i have ever had, The service was amazing, The philly had so much flavor and can we talk about how wet the sandwich was (no dry Philly here). The price is definitely worth it !! 10 out of 10
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
So it's been a few years since I've been out here to this one. With NW 23rd being right over the hill I've gone to it. I suddenly found myself out that way the other day and decided to stop in. As normal a very good cheese steak. I should have gotten a small but what the hell it's ok to be a pig once in a while.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Great subs and friendly service. They even do wiz, it's expensive for the size but so is everything else. Not a fan of the fry sauce though. But quality food.

Johnny C.

Yelp
Best Philly cheesesteak I had ,may be pricey if you want to eat here regularly but it was worth the experience for me quick service nice people
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
I would avoid this place. Weird vibe. Cheese fries use spicy nacho cheese. Does not state in menu. Cheesesteaks fairly small and really greasy. Dude at cash register puts out strange attitude. There is better in town. Wish I didn't waste my money.
google avatar

Yelp
Grant's food is EXCELLENT! If you're looking for the perfect french fry, you'll find it here. They're cut from very large potatoes, are perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and impossibly flavorful, and are not even remotely greasy. The "small" size is (as of this writing) $4.25, but it is easily enough for two people with non-gargantuan appetites to share. The cheesesteaks and delicious, and are available with all of the usual toppings such as mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc. and the requisite Cheese Whiz. You can also get provolone and Tillamook cheddar, so you have plenty of options. The staff is very small in number, but their service is prompt and as friendly as can be. The only things weighing against Grants are: 1. It is too small for the number of customers it serves. There are only a handful of parking spaces, and a few small tables inside and outside. You'll likely have to street park, and perhaps eat in your car, or at the nearby park. 2. The prices are quite high, honestly. A full sandwich is $14.25, and it isn't terribly large for that price. It is very high quality, but it still seems to be on the pricey side of things. Definitely go to Grant's if you're in the mood for an amazing sandwich and the best fries you'll find anywhere.

Kharma B.

Yelp
Hi this is the local kids that were just there so good really good cheesesteaks and fries
google avatar

Francisco A.

Yelp
I was disappointed with the quality of sandwich I got for the price I paid. The day after got one at a food cart for a lower price and it was a great cheesesteak.
google avatar

Rick H.

Yelp
Grants blows away the competition in Portland. Hands down. They may be a lil pricey? But you get what you pay for. Their homemade tater chips are exquisite. Their cheesesteaks with pickled peppers are beyond delicious. Mouthgasm. Geno's and Pat's in Philadelphia don't even come close to being as good. Do yourself a favor! Visit Grants!!
google avatar

Toni T.

Yelp
Yesterday my husband ordered three sandwiches (Sandy Blvd. location) one of them was a Philly Philly. He told me the order taker was very rude and very "short" with customers. After waiting over 20 minutes for our order, he brought it home. The Philly Philly sandwich had NO cream cheese (and no other cheese substituted on it) and there was NO chips provided with any of the sandwiches. If you run out of product, especially at lunch time, you should advise your customers of substitutions instead of not saying anything; i.e., "Hey, I'm sorry we are out of cream cheese. Would you like another cheese. We are out of our homemade chips, would you like fries instead?"

Michael T.

Yelp
Bring back the real Grant's Philly. Went in today ordered an original and got meat and cheese on a soggy bun thing, nothing like the old Philly. The counter attendant says the right words but was not very believable. He was very short with a customer regarding a to-go order. He never asked us if ours was to-say or to-go. Nice new paint, nice new sound system but we would prefer quality sandwiches and skip the decor. PS: went in twice for gift certificates and they were out, no idea when they would have them again, today, a big sign on the counter " gift certificates", too bad after today we don't need any gift certs.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Always a good experience at Grant's. From phone orders to pickup, to wolfing down the best cheese steak sandwiches in Portland. I've never had a bad sandwich! Not cheap, but to me, worth it. Saves me the time and airfare from flying to Philly!

Mtb T.

Yelp
My sandwich was great and filling. The seating is a bit Spartan but the food came fast and hot.
google avatar

Olivia D.

Yelp
My favorite Philly cheesesteak spot in the Portland area. I'd never had a cheesesteak until about a year ago and became a little obsessed with them lol so I've tried a few places and this is def my favorite. I always get the whiz with just onions as I'm not a huge fan of peppers and it's just sooo good. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Clifford H.

Yelp
Fries were crispy, but not to where my grandma couldn't eat them without dentures. perfect thickness, and fried with delicious oil; these are my grandmas favorite fries. The philly cheese steak was delicious. Yummy beef, soft bread, and stretchy provolone. The mildly sour bell peppers compliments it perfectly. Overall, freshly made and delicious local food.Only complaint would be the price, but quality ain't cheap; it can't be helped!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
A little crispy (very well done) steak but overall it was a great tasting sandwich. One of the best in town. Lots of orders to go because there's very little seating inside. Complimentary homemade potato chips was another nice surprise. I plan on going again and again.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
Yum yum yum yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm And they are so nice!! This place has the best Philly cheesesteak I've ever had outside of Philly.
google avatar

Misty O.

Yelp
I have yet to find a better cheesesteak in Portland. They are a little pricey for a cheesesteak but the full size sandwiches are definitely two meals or one long food coma.
google avatar

Jacob P.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Delicious Legit Philly Cheesesteak! They are super meaty and messy like a good Philly should be and the peppers are on point! Great service and quick too. Highly recommend if your in a cheesesteak mood.
google avatar

Peter F.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. I am from Boston and a huge foodie. This is the BEST STEAK AND CHEESE EVER. I have had lots of steak and cheese subs but NOTHING compares to Grant's. If you have never been here you Need to try them . I just don't have the words to describe how good it really is. I always get the full sandwich with American cheese, mushrooms, onions and hot peppers. You can not go wrong.
google avatar

Michele W.

Yelp
We have been planning to go here for several years. We stopped by and were very disappointed. Currently there is a mask mandate in Oregon and probably 1/3 of the customers and none of the employees had on masks. There was no sign on the door indicating masks were required. The man at the counter handing out food was putting cups on the counter to give to customers, putting his fingers into the cups with no gloves on. There was no courtesy water available and it was $2.80 for a small bottle of water. The sandwich was $12.50 which was a lot for what we got. The sandwich was okay but nothing great. We won't be returning.
google avatar

Jes J.

Yelp
Since moving to Oregon, I've been looking for a good cheesesteak place to try out that matched my favorite place back in California. Grant's popped up when I did a search for food close by so I decided to try it out. It's a small spot off of Sandy Blvd that doesn't really catch the eye from the road. Easy to access with good parking, for today at least. I must have hit it during a slow period as there was only one other customer present. The lady behind the counter offered a warm greeting as I checked out the menu. I opted to order the Original Philly Cheesesteak since this was a new place for me. Not much of a wait before my food was ready. I didn't time it but maybe about 5 minutes, if that. I love that even if you don't order a side you still get a bag of their housemade potato chips with the purchase of a sandwich. Total came to $14.95 for a whole sandwich. Food was delicious and still warm after the drive back home. I love that they use the hot & sweet peppers over bellpeppers. It just seems to add a bit more flavor. And the bread was wonderfully fresh and soft. Grant's was just what I've been looking for!! Great customer service, and great food. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
Super disappointed! Friends were ranting and raving how good their Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches were! Got a whole sandwich back home and to our surprise the folks forgot to put one of the most important ingredients, the cheese! Not the first impression you were looking for!
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Best Philly Cheesesteak I've had on the west coast. They have several option for cheese but the white. Cheddar was amazing! Add a basket of fries and it's perfect meal. Also cool that I went with my brother Grant.
google avatar

Kara C.

Yelp
They forgot part of my order and when I went back in the rude woman up front told the younger woman in the back to pull up my order and confirm I wasn't lying about fries?? Really?? The young lady then tried to tell me I wasn't charged for the fries and I had to show her my receipt. Just unnecessarily rude. Also, food is way over priced, bread was so soggy it wasn't edible. No workers were wearing masks even though there's a mandate. 2/10 would not recommend.

Tim C.

Yelp
Best cheesesteak I've ever had. I used to work close (15 years ago) and would have lunch here monthly. Having not eaten at Grants in a while we revisited it and it didn't disappoint. It's delicious and heavy be ready for a nap post Grants Original.
google avatar

Yelp
6 Stars if I could. The Original Philip is the best in PDX, if only they had a location in East Vancouver so I could go all the time.

Yelp
Juicy story! Lisa (employee) straight up YELLED and BERATED me in front of my friends and customers. Came on a Friday at 12:50pm. We intended to eat there but all tables were taken so we ordered to go. Friend got his food after 30 mins (understandable bc they were noticeably busy) so I assumed mine was next which was an order of 3 sandwiches to go. Lisa comes out later to serve 3 dine in customers who came after us and rushes to the back. She starts bagging up an order and I assume its mine, only to see her walk over to another customer. I catch her as she walks back to the kitchen and ask her to check on our order as its been 45 minutes at this point. She looks at me and rushes to the back without saying a word. I could hear her in the back venting to her coworker about me not speaking up if its been 45 minutes(how can i speak up if she never comes to the front?). I remain up at the counter to wait and speak with her but she doesnt come back. A younger employee starts bagging up another order in the front and I ask her if that is mine. Another customer claims it. At this point, i have no clue whats happening. I thought Lisa went back to work on it but no. The other girl graciously helps me to confirm my order and apologizes since their ticket machine was not working properly in the back and the ticket must have gotten lost and that she would work on those right now. Lisa comes out to take other customer's orders and bags ours up. She apologizes about our ticket getting lost, they are short handed and shouldnt even be open today. I let her know i could hear what she said about me and that i did speak up but you left immediately and didnt come back out. She refuses to listen to me and the order of events I am attempting to explain. She starts raising her voice, snaps at me and rants about how her bosses are in the middle of the ocean, i should know its friday, lunch time, beginning of the month and they are only 2 employees running around like chickens with their heads cut off with a broken machine. That I should have stopped her when she was delivering orders to people. I let her know its not my first time here and that im fully aware its lunch time. She yells that i have my food, leave, go, bye! Then calls me a princess! Keeps yelling until I get out the door with my friends. I could not believe I was yelled at in front of about 5 customers and my 2 friends. I call back later and politely ask when Grant returns so I can speak with him. She starts yelling at me again on the phone saying she doesnt have time for this (but continues yelling for 1 minute) and that she will certainly tell Grant what happened. I said all i want at this point is just a refund (3 orders + tip = $51.75). She responds that she was going to give me a refund but then i attacked her and that i dont have to come back, continues to rant for another minute and repeats she doesnt have time for this and hangs up on me. Excuse me?! I did not attack her! She raised her voice at me, admonished me profusely, name called me, etc. I would not have tipped them (on a to go order even) had i known i was going to be treated this way. She totally snapped at me and ranted with excuses as if she were taking it out on me that theyre short staffed. I dont need to know this as a customer and I was trying to be considerate only to get my head ripped off. such a shame because this place is delicious but never going back because of her. Lisa - I hope you read this. you can believe whatever you want but watch the security tapes and see what really happened versus what you thought happened. you were totally stubborn and refused to listen. I understand working under pressure and multi tasking - i have a job too (and it has nothing to do with being a princess). i was definitely aware of who ordered after me and you should know too since you took the orders, but you disregarded me. i see other reviews of customers being treated poorly. please take a chill pill!
