The Tailor Shop Bar & Foodery Review - South Lamar - Austin - The Infatuation

"Calling The Tailor Shop a fully-fledged food hall would be like calling our dinner of Hot Pockets and ice cream a multi-course omakase, but that hasn’t stopped The Tailor Shop from adopting the title and kicking things off with a couple different options. Currently, it’s home to two food vendors: , and Taqueria 1836.  Think of this food hall on South Lamar near Menchaca Road more like one large, central bar with a couple of ghost kitchens in the back. Ordering takes place via QR code, which just makes it easy to post up at a picnic table on the large patio with a couple of margaritas while you and your party wait for pizza, calzones, birria tacos, and ceviches to arrive from their respective kitchens. The Neapolitan pies at Pizzeria Grata are some of , with beautifully blistered and chewy crusts that we think about often. Make sure to grab an order of Americana pizza rolls while you’re there—they come stuffed with bacon marmalade, garlic confit, and plenty of cheese—then grab a couple of pies for the table. And if you’re not in the mood for cheese and dough, the tacos at Taqueria 1836 are a pretty solid bet. The Tailor shop might still be a food hall in its infancy, but we’re excited to see what it grows up to become. " - Nicolai McCrary

Nice pizza spot with welcoming service and fresh pies. I normally stick to my pepperoni but it was happy hour so I tried the Sweet & Spicy for $10. This is a soft crust pie with a good balance of ingredients. The sweet and spicy came through perfectly. I also tried the Philly Special which has double meat with a side of hot pepper sauce. The hot pepper sauce is amazing. The philly was good, you barely have to chew the meat. It was flavorful. Next time I'll try the Original so I can get the veggies on there. The crust of the pizza and bread on the sandwich were both top tier. I'll return when in the area. The customer service was great. Pro tip its an older building so the front bar area doesn't have any cool arlir flowing. Go to the back corner if coming during the summer months there is cool air back there.

When people recommend restaurants, you never know what you're going to get. Sometimes, they're spot on. Other times, you wonder what the heck were they thinking??? Note: Maybe you wonder about my recommendations sometimes. I am here to definitively tell you, with absolutely certainty, that Grata's has the BEST Philly Cheesesteak in the city. With no disrespect to R&Bs and Hoody's - I really liked their sandwiches - but Grata's, they are the king! My Philly boy and I visited Grata's for lunch today, and we were greeted outside by Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers flags and a sign that said: I ❤️ Philadelphia PA. Inside was more Philly memorabilia in a bar setting. Grata's is definitely a bar that serves food, not a restaurant that has a bar. We ordered three different sandwiches, including the Grata Original [cheeseteak] and the Philly Special [larger cheesesteak]. We also had to try their Italian sub because I was told it would rival the Homeslice Italian Sub that I have been touting as best in the city. And yes, Little Deli and Pizzeria has a good one too, but it's not quite as good. I went with white American cheese on my Grata's Original. It was melted throughout the sandwich, so that each gooey bite was a perfect blend of steak, onions, peppers, and cheese. The cheesesteaks at Grata's are served on Liscio's rolls ordered directly from Philadelphia. Similar to Amoroso rolls, Liscio's provides that perfect crunch when you take each bite. My buddy Mike's double meat, double cheese (Provolone and whiz) sandwhich was a beast. See the pictures for the differences between the two. They went big with a ton of ribeye meat on that bad boy. He said this is the new "go-to" place for his hometown-favorite sandwich. Now for our other choice, we elected to go with Grata's The Big Dom over their Brandywine Gourmet Italian because it added a fourth meat, prosciutto, in addition to the Genoa Salami, prosciuttini ham and capicola, plus Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and oil with Italian spices. The Big Dom is served cold, similar to Little Deli's. The difference is that the amount of meat and other fixings on the sub is even more generous. There was a little too much lettuce on it, but once I removed a bit, it was perfect. Normally, Mike and I will add mayo on our Itlalian subs, but we forgot, and despite this omission, the sub was still very moist, and the olive oil and spice blend really shone through. Overall, it was an exceptional visit to Grata's. Service was perfect. If you're a Philly guy or gal, you will love the place. Go during football season and watch the Eagles defend their title. Not a sports fan, but you love those ribeye sandwiches, run as fast as you can there. They are the real deal!

Google
Being from the East coast and always looking for a good pizza, I decided to try this place. I ordered a pizza with pepperoni, sausage and meatballs. I thought it would be loaded with meat but was very disappointed. Why be stingy with the toppings when someone is paying $23 for a pizza? The crust took up 1/3 of the pizza where there could have been more pizza and toppings. I also ordered a large cheese steak. It was pretty good. Close to what I had growing up in Philadelphia. I had it simple with provalone, mushrooms and no onions. Would have gotten more toppings on a DiGiorno pizza for $5.99.

Went on a Sunday for lunch. Wife and I split a large Philly Special and garlic pesto knots. We loved the sandwich and the service from the bartender. We thought the garlic knots were a miss. We’ll be back to try some of the cold sandwiches.

Google
grata’s is a very solid choice for cheesesteaks and pizza in the austin area. the location has fun vibes too, with friendly servers and plenty of tvs. i definitely would go back because who can have enough cheesesteaks?!

We took our kids to Grata's to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary today and had an excellent experience. We split the Caprese salad which isn't a traditional one with spinach, it is even better, having arugula and basil instead. My daughter got the pepperoni knots, my husband the pepperoni pizza, I got the Americana and my son the Caprese Pizza. Everything was super good! We got the dessert pockets too which were insanely delicious, hot and fresh!! Our server, who was very friendly and generally great, kindly comped us the dessert after we told her our story. We ate Grata for lunch on our wedding day, at our house, during Covid. We had to order from their gas station location the day before as they were not open Sundays at that time, to reheat on the day. It's my favorite pizza and is still just as delicious at the new pub location, 5 years on. Attaching a picture our wedding photographer took in our kitchen on our wedding day.

Chloe was so helpful in helping us choose a great vegetarian option along with an excellent pairing for the beverage. She was so sweet and highly recommend visiting! The atmosphere was chill and super fun!

Google
Love the atmosphere and everything. This is an Eagles bar, and the sign is fake. Its more of you parked there so you are therefore a Philly's fan. Food is what you expect from a gastropub, which typically lands in the above average area, but not the best.

Yelp
Not going to post a picture, because I took a bite and I hate posting those. I will post one eventually. First, Austin sucks for a Philly cheesesteak with just cheese whiz and onions (so I thought). It's a very simple staple of a cheesesteak and so many places do not have cheese whiz. I tried another place in Austin last year off east 7th st. and it was terrible. They had cheese whiz, but it tasted awful and I got food poisoning. After that I was afraid to even try another philly cheesesteak, but I read some good reviews on reddit that said this place was legit and I decided to take a chance. First, it looked really good. I usually will ask for extra cheese whiz, but this was the perfect amount of meat, onions, and cheese whiz in a delicious roll. Apparently the cheese whiz isn't from a can, but it tastes very very good and if they hadn't have told me I wouldn't have known otherwise. I wasn't even that hungry and almost changed my mind on the way, but I'm glad I didn't. It's a very good cheesesteak, and absolutely what I look for when I'm looking for one. Big ups to Grata's Pizzeria. I will definitely be back when I'm craving a cheesesteak. Their pizza looks incredible too, but I've yet to try it -- definitely will try in the future.

Yelp
What a huge disappointment. To be fair, saw a few IG posts about this place and the pics looked amazing. I should know better than to believe the bullshit on social media. I'm from the Philly area and I've been searching everywhere for something close to what I remember as a solid cheesesteak, hoagie, or pizza. When you walk in there's all kinds of Philly sports swag everywhere. I was hopeful. Wife I ordered 2 sammiches (cheesesteak and brandywine Italian) and a pizza to try. They claim to use Liscio's rolls and ribeye for steaks. LIES! On top of that, so little meat it was shameful. It was bread with a smear of meat and some cheese. The Italian hoagie...they cut it in half. My half had pickles no tomatoes. My wife's half had tomatoes and no pickles! Wtf?! Again, more bread than meat. The pizza.....left a bad taste in our mouths. For lack of better description, it tastes like it was cooked with a blow torch. There's this weird pungent after taste to it. Service wasn't great but to be fair, it was one woman for the entire place. Bar and all. It was empty and now i get why. Oh and it's owned by a hospitality group which explains the lack of love in the food. DO NOT BELIVE THE HYPE!!!

Yelp
Sometimes the picture tells you a lie, this is not one of those times. The sandwich was as delicious as it looks, and my whole review is going to send around that fact. Look at that. Just look.
google avatar

Shradha A.

Yelp
They have relocated and are now inside a pub on South Lamar. We went for Happy Hour pizzas and thought it was an incredible deal. The pizzas were pretty good and they use Italian flour to make their dough. I think these pizza are good and enjoyable even at full price. It's a more inviting setting now.

Yelp
Very solid pizza and beer on tap but also very mediocre in all the best ways. This is where you come for the company and stay for the food coma. The menu offers some great options for all classic pizzas, from red sauce to white sauce to green pesto. All of which are on what appears to be Neapolitan crusts, with great charred air pockets. Just the right amount. The Roma had the most flavor of the 3 pizzas I tried. Probably a vegetarian's favorite pizza but I do wish there was more red sauce. The Bianca pizza was nice and mellow, but missing just a little something as it tastes very white. Not necessarily bland but some more garlic or truffle would've been nice. Perhaps exactly what's missing is the truffles. And no red sauce for dipping. I was a little sorely disappointed to munch on dry bready crusts. Nevertheless a great experience with the best permed hair you've ever been waited on.

Yelp
Get the pizza steak sandwitch and you won't be disappointed. The thin sliced beef, fresh cut cold cut, and tomatoe basil sauce...oh my. Lorenzo was are server and he had the best recommendation possible. This place ain't style it's about taste.
google avatar

Clay T.

Yelp
Had the sweet and spicy pizza here. Much to my surprise their 12 inch pizza here filled me up without feeling bloated as their pizzas here are super thin, which is great because that means less bread. The flavor and texture was amazing, definitely one of the more unique and flavorful pizzas I've had in Austin. In the mood for something that isn't like your typical pizza that tastes great and healthy? Try this place. People here are pretty nice as well.

h n.

Yelp
Got the sweet and spicy pizza. The pizza was good but the crust at the bottom of the pizza was soft and soggy so that it was hard to even hold the pizza all the toppings would slide off the slice. Pro tip: go during happy hour for their $10 and then go home and crispen up the crust

Keefer S.

Yelp
Amazing pizza!! Brandon was very attentive & a great guy. One man show, definitely coming back!

Yelp
The night we checked this place out it was so chill & quiet which was lovely! The staff was so welcoming & they were great about explaining the menu in regards to what was currently available or sold out. You can order straight from your phone which makes it super convenient, you can order on your time vs being pressured by someone. One of the beers I ordered had just sold out so the bartender came to our table & recommended something similar for me which was great! The food took a bit to come out but it was worth the wait for sure. The meatballs were fantastic but I would say there was TOO much bread that accompanied them. Pizza pockets were absolutely DIVINE! The flavors on the pizza worked wonderfully together which makes me excited to try others next time! Would recommend this place for a casual date night or a catch up session with a friend.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
Sub sandwiches spot on and the staff is super friendly. Bar is a great choice and outdoor seating with you dog is great
google avatar

Bonnie R.

Yelp
I picked up a pizza for dinner. After the suggestion of the staff, I decided on the spicy and sweet. I would have preferred a pizza larger than 12 inches but it was enough for two. The crust was a little soggy by the time we ate it , but it toasted up well in a cast iron skillet. I thought the pizza was good but my husband said he has had better. The place also has sub sandwiches.
google avatar

Lee S.

Yelp
Nope. Paid for some extra cheese on my meatball pizza. Got this instead. Burnt pizza of some kind - not sure what it was supposed to be.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Got delivery recently and I don't know what came over me but I opted for a buffalo chicken calzone. Ok, annnnnnnnnnnd pepperoni pizza rolls. The pepperoni pizza rolls hit the spot. The dough to pepperoni to sauce to cheese ratio was almost scientific it was so good. I would order time and time and time and time and time again. The calzone was interesting. A lot of dough, which I was not mad it. I think if there had been more chicken inside the calzone it would have balanced the doughiness and rich Buffalo sauce a little more. I will continue to explore their menu!
google avatar

Amanda G.

Yelp
Unbeatable happy hour!!! $10 pizza and half off bottles of wine is insanely awesome! Not to mention their pizza is absolutely delicious. I had the gluten free crust and it was good - had some crispy to it but was not a cracker! It's a sports bar with many TVs and laid back atmosphere. Service was so so sooooo friendly. We will 100% be back.
google avatar

Gina S.

Yelp
The best Philly spot in Austin! Menu is spot on. Calzone, pepperoni pizza pockets, Americana pizza, garlic knots with fresh pesto. Dough is freakin perfect, nailed the elasticity. Great ingredients. Cooked and executed delightfully. Service is friendly, makes you feel at home (but not 'Philly at home' bc then they wouldn't be friendly) Great staff. Great clean sports bar with an amazing menu(s) and friendly service. Picky with my Philly spots. This gets my approval Source: mega foodie and Philly born n bred

William P.

Yelp
Amazing food and service I went twice in the same week, the pizzas are amazing but the Philly cheesesteaks are what keep me coming back, Diego , George ,and Brandon keep the Philly vibe alive and well 10/10
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
We went here on a whim because we wanted to try out a local pizza place and it was DELICIOUS! We tried the balsamica pizza - it was fantastic. The server was very friendly and even gave us free garlic knots to try. The garlic knots had basil pesto on them and were delicious. We will be back!
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Mind blowing food. Barbacoa birra tacos, strawberry Agua Fresca, and Neopolitan with prosciutto. Wow. Pizzeria Grata and Taqueria 1836 under one roof. Tailor Shop Foodery

Michael O.

Yelp
Excellent Happy Hour Pizza Prices! Food was great. Food pacing could have been better. Salad shouldn't come after the pizzas.
google avatar

Lizzie D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious as usual! I've been in love with this pizza since they were inside a tiny gas station in South Austin. Now they have a brick and mortar with drinks available. Pizza tastes JUST like I had in Naples, Italy. Seriously. That good. I talked to the owner and he shared it is because they use only the best imported ingredients from Naples. I can tell and you can really taste the difference! Do yourself a favor and try their margarita pizza today. Ricotta y limone is good, too. But margarita is my absolute favorite and it's a classic.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Went here for happy hour and was pleasantly surprised with the pizza. Not even just for a bar, this pizza is great. Hidden gem in Austin because it wasn't busy at all - definitely should be!! Great service, stellar pizza, and good prices.

Joanna H.

Yelp
Terrible. Soggy. Barely any meatballs. Where's the extra cheese I paid for. Tastes awful. Waste of money.
google avatar

Melanie R.

Yelp
I just moved to the south side of Austin and found this little gem with the Help of Yelp So glad I did! They offer some seriously good, healthy pizza. Vegetarian options (unsure about vegan). I ordered the pizza rolls (3 were enough to fill me up but I kept going ) I was hesitant about ordering the Ricotta E Limone because some places really make it not worth ordering much with prosciutto but they supplied a hearty amount. Garlic confit and arugula really blended all of the flavors well and the crust was great! Not too hard or soft. Located inside a Valero (just an fyi) Delivery is only with services like Grubhub, UberEats, Doordash and...a 4th one I can't quite recall. Even during the busiest time, my order only took ~20 minutes. Will definitely be ordering from here again
google avatar

Mahesh N.

Yelp
This is one of those places where I want to give them another chance. On both of our pizzas, the crust was excellent. However on the margarita, the mozzarella didn't seem it had melted well. On our caprese, the pesto was tasty but it had cooled a little bit. So maybe best you eat there or pick it up yourself. They did mix up our order of 12" pizzas and when we got them there were a shade under 9". To their credit, I called and they credited us back the difference between the 12 and (I am assuming 10") pizzas. We had ordered olives added on to our margarita, and we felt half the pizza had none. Still for what you get, not sure it is worth the cost.

Matthew G.

Yelp
I'm from the suburbs of Philadelphia and met one of the owners who promised a great cheesesteak at a Philly themed bar. He told me the sourced from the Philly area. OMG he was spot on! Great food, great atmosphere and one of the best cheesesteaks I've had even when I go home to visit. The roll was perfect, light and flakey with great flavor. The steak was noisy and flavorful and your choice of cheese. I went with wiz. I'd say this would best many steaks back home! Amazingly outgoing staff and made me so happy to find this gem here in Austin Can't wait to go back and try the chicken cheesesteak

Angel C.

Yelp
Amazing place! Had the (meatballs) and the were great. The bread that comes with it. Is just so good. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Bo B.

Yelp
4.5 stars I loved the sweet and spicy pizza here. The Roma one was just ok. The calzones looked pretty good too.
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
Honestly a "hot and ready" from Little Caesars would have been better than this. This was straight up stale. The crust tasted like cardboard and nothing about was even remotely notable. The only thing I can remember from my order is paying $17.00 per pie and being beyond disappointed. I don't mind spending money on Pizza (Bufalina, Sammatoro, Via 313, Home Slice) - but this one was not worth the money spent. Literally spending ~5 dollars or whatever Little Caesars charges these days would have been a steal. Even my frozen Digiorno would have been better. Cheers
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
The new location is dreary. The service lacking. The bartender could not produce a printed menu. The décor consists of some spooky looking mannequins standing forlornly in the corners. Otherwise, the place was empty. This is not the Pizzeria Grata I once loved. I didn't bother ordering any food. The vibe was just too downbeat. My instincts told me to leave. In addition, their pizzas are no longer woodfired. It brings me no pleasure to reduce my 5 star review from years ago (now deleted) to two stars. If I didn't have good memories of Pizzeria Grata it would be one star.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
I ordered online and was told it would be a 20 to 25 min wait.. it ended up being closer to a 50 minute wait. It was around dinner time though, and it seemed that one of the staff was new and only one other worker. That's where my complaining ends. The pizza itself was very good, ingredients were fresh, and the crust was just the right amount of chewy. The garlic knots are also pretty generously sized. Definitely pick these up if you go ;) It's located in basically a gas station convenience store. If you're nearby and want some pizza, give it a try!

William W.

Yelp
Just got 2 meat calzones they we're pretty small not much meat, a meatball pizza with no meatball's. Now the pepperoni, onion and sausage pizza did have what it said, 105 bucks.....y'all must be insane to give such high reviews. I'll stick with home slice when I come to town. The dough was good that was about it.
google avatar

Gurpreet L.

Yelp
I never thought I'd like any pizza more or even similarly to the way I love Homeslice but I was very wrong. Pizzeria Grata has the most delicious margarita pizza I've ever had. I'm more of a white pie girl but wow, their red sauce is great and don't get me started on their sauce. I'm so happy to have another wonderful pizza joint to add to my rotation
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
Have driven by this unassuming gas station location many times and finally got a chance to order the pizza I've been hearing so much good stuff about.. All I can say is it's worth it.. I am so glad I stopped in! Ready for pickup with 15 minutes. I ordered my go-to pizza when I try a new place, the margarita... Clean flavor with a touch of garlic and the perfect amount of fresh basil and cheese on a crispy crust. Exceptional. One of the coolest thing on the menu is a pay it forward option, which will give some food and love to the needy. big fan of that. Nice addition to the neighborhood. I'll be back!
google avatar

Alessandro C.

Yelp
Pizza is good, beer is cold and live entertainment on Saturday night while eating Al fresco was great.

Darian D.

Yelp
I went to Pizzeria Grata for an early dinner earlier today, had the meatball pizza and it turned out to be great, Gracie did a great job attending to her guests and is such a joy to have as a server, I also appreciated the live music they have which made it more fun dining out at Pizzeria Grata. I think the new location on Lamar is a big improvement over the old location.
google avatar

Ky C.

Yelp
i'm gonna be honest, the gas station from the outside looks a little sketchy and at first i was hesitant but after entering i saw a cleanly and inviting pizzeria. The employees greeted me and you can watch them make the pizza at the lil bar with some chairs. The menu looked delightful- I will do anything for a pizza with prosciutto on it, for a 10 inch pizza with multiple toppings included prosciutto it was $14 (not including tip). holy cow it was/is delicious as i am stuffing my face currently. so so good.

Tom G.

Yelp
excellent Philly style pies and cheesesteaks. Great beer selections and friendly service. Lots of parking which is a real treat in Austin.
google avatar

Alexia W.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. A little hidden gem inside a gas station that dishes out the best pizza ever!! The service was great, shout-out to Kyle for being super courteous and kind. Definitely the best pizza I've ever had, the cook on the dough was perfect and the crust was *chef's kiss*. Will be coming back for sure!!

Katie L.

Yelp
AMAZINGGGGG!!! Better than home slice. Seriously you have to try the margarita and the americano pizzas
google avatar

Vic Z.

Yelp
I can't believe this is the best pizza in South Austin! Why? Because it's located inside a gas station, and they serve Napoleon-style pizza. I was shocked when I placed my order online for the first time and the GPS had me pull inside a gas station. I'll be honest, I was confused at first. This just shows you, it's not what's on the outside, but what's in the inside. As someone who is a snob for Napoleon pizza, I was very much impressed. I highly recommend Pizzeria Grata! I would give this 4.5 stars, only because I typically like to dine in and you can't here.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
I love this place but our pizza was burnt to a crisp this evening. Will definitely give them another try but super disappointed.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Delicious pepperoni pizza. Best I have had in a long time! Sauce, topping and crust were the best

BJ W.

Yelp
Can I give ZERO stars? Nothing to do with the food or the service. Actually, would really love to recommend this business but they had an epic fail. Website says open on Sunday. Online ordering was spotty. Favor showed availability but menu was severely limited. Door Dash (who I despise) didn't show the restaurant at all. Not like closed, literally nothing. So what to do? Called three times. Voicemail only. Maybe they are permanently closed? Maybe they really aren't open on Sundays? How hard is it to Post/Update the hours? Overall 0/10

T. D.

Yelp
Fresh hand-tossed pizzas in the back of a gas station? I didn't believe it either. But the chicken pesto 12" pizza for $15 will have me coming back. Can't wait to try other flavors, or even the sandwiches. Never would have found this place or believed it existed had someone not taken me. Very, very worth it.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Neapolitan style pizza is my absolute favorite, and it isn't easy to find here in Austin. This place hits the mark 100%. It's casual, no frills, rock music playing, scruffy friendly, and very reasonably priced. Love it.
google avatar

Jill C.

Yelp
Great flavorful pizza. Located in a valero, but tasty wood fire pizza for a fair price. Will definitely be a repeat customer!
google avatar

Alisa N.

Yelp
The pizza is good, but I wouldn't say it is great. The pizza rolls are AMAZING but pretty expensive and price out to $2.50 each, and they are very small. Location is in a gas station-there are several stools, but you basically have to get it to go. It's right across the street from a church with a large homeless population, so you very likely will run into them at the gas station. For the price, I'd suggest going elsewhere. It was fun to try and different, but not worth the price.
google avatar

Alysha M.

Yelp
I don't think I've ever gotten a pizza that I couldn't even eat a single slice of...this was an UberEats mistake :( the pizza was not good, but the pep rolls were worse- completely black on the bottom, super burnt. And the Ranch I paid for was missing.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
Great service, even better pizza. Such a great variety, and the quality is out of this world. The buffalo chicken, pizza, rolls and pepperoni pizza rolls and sausage Pizza rolls are to die for. I've never had a bad thing here and I will keep coming back all the time.
