Where to Find the Iconic Dishes of Minnesota - Eater Twin Cities

"Around here, it’s “duck, duck, gray duck.” This downtown restaurant recently doubled down on its Minnesota dedication with a new menu that includes all kinds of nods to the state’s cuisine including a chicken wrap served in lefse, a turkey leg like a self-contained Thanksgiving dinner, and what is currently ranked as the best restaurant hotdish around." - Joy Summers

Justin Sutherland’s Gray Duck in Downtown St. Paul Is Now Serving Hotdish - Eater Twin Cities

"Gray Duck, the downtown St. Paul restaurant with the most Minnesotan restaurant name of all time, is switching its menu focus from global comfort food to zero in on Minnesota fare. Part of the Madison group of restaurants, led by Top Chef contestant Justin Sutherland, Gray Duck first opened with comfort foods from around the world, including a legendary burger. Before getting too worked up about that burger know, the saucy Animal is saying put, but much of the menu now reads like a greatest hits of regional dishes. There will be hotdish, served as mom intended, with tater tots on top. A wrap is folded together with fresh lefse, as opposed to the standard flour tortilla. There’s a supperclub style Prime Rib French Dip and Swedish meatballs with creamy mashed potatoes, among others. As with many Madison projects, Sutherland is working with chef Donald Gonzalez, who also oversaw Gray Duck when it first launched. The experience between the two chefs, one a culinary celebrity on the rise and the other a French Laundry trained award winner in his own rite, means that these Minnesota dishes are getting a bit more elevated than grandma’s hotdish and the whole cream-of-something situation." - Joy Summers

What a great place to dine. The menu has a mix of feel good food (meatloaf/potpie) to trendy delicious burgers. We dined both Friday and Saturday and had amazing servers/staff both evenings. My coffee cup was never empty and my belly was full. Do NOT pass up the waffle dessert!

Google
Overall the ambience was quite nice. The food overall was tasty however over-salted and I did find a long "fluff fiber" on to of the burrito bowl..... I included the restaurants descriptions and prices under the pictures of our food. Was surprised that the Humpty ducky was 1/2 of a deviled duck egg. But was nicely presented. Our waitress was busy and short with us and it took a while to get our order in, luckily we were in no rush. I can't say that I would be going back as I find the cost per portion / overall was just a tad too high for value. I also did not feel we were valued guests but again this could have had been because it was so busy.

We dined here only because it was close to our hotel and it looked interesting when searching online. We were so impressed we made dinner reservations for the very next evening as well. The Tamarind Chili wings might be the best wings I have ever had. Asian inspired flavours with citrus and a really good kick to finish it off. Absolutely done to perfection. The Singapore Broil was prepared exceptionally well. Tender and full of flavour we paired ours with cheesy garlic mashed potatoes and the green beans. The small plate was more than enough for two, with sides. The gin and tonic is made with in house tonic. My wife loves Gin and tonic and promises it it absolutely worth it (I am not a fan of Gin). The tonic is made with a hint of lime and it has been perfected. The Old Fashioned is done really well. A twist on this cocktail being made with whiskey but the flavour is excellent and the duck ice puts the presentation over the top. I enjoyed two of them during dinner. Great food and great location right in the heart of downtown St. Paul.

This is definitely a great spot for the lunch crowd in downtown St. Paul. It has easy access from the skyway and there is metered parking on the streets nearby. The menu has a lot of great options and a good variety for people with a variety of dietary needs. The food was good, but not great. My French dip came out a bit undercooked and with a lot of gristle. However, the other person in my group had a great lunch and enjoyed their meal though. The staff was friendly and our food came out quickly. I would definitely recommend this place as a lunch spot to an out of town co-worker.

Google
The restaurant is seat-yourself, but the service was excellent. I had a server with water and a drink request at my table in less than two minutes. Very friendly staff, fast food from the kitchen, and though I only had soup and an appetizer I was very impressed. Their Chicken and Wild Rice is a little bit soupy (I prefer creamy) but the flavor was spot on, and required no salt added. The steak bites weren't dry and the onion slivers were like little onion ring bites. The tangy sauce tasted a bit too ketchupy (it worked for the onion rings), but the horsey Blue cheese was a perfect match for the steak. I would certainly visit again when I have more time and try the steak sandwich or burger. Looking forward to trying more of the menu!

Google
1pm on a thursday, dead slow at the place. order fried calamari. looks like half was missing.. lol beside that.. it came to us soggy and cold. we tried the fish and chips, again this place was not busy, fish came out soggy. i can probably conclude they dont know how to set the correct fryer temp. lol wanted to like this place.. not it was a disappiontment.

Google
Lots of flavors in these dishes. The table I was with got a variety of different things. Great food, I would absolutely go back. The menu is limited and seems pricey for what it is, but the portion says are good. A side dish of small chow mein was plenty for two to share with s small meat pairing. It seems like they try to up sell you on the food, but in reality the small portion sizes are plenty for two!

Google
Another new favorite restaurant! Delicious food, great service, tasty cocktails! Seated right away, even before a Wild game. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area!!

Yelp
Two picky eaters passed dinner time but very satisfied with the turnout at Gray Duck Tavern. The vegetarian found the quinoa tacos are very delicious, the one exploring low-fodmap diet didn't have any digestive problem with the 3 different kinds of tacos. I appreciated the variety of choices here.

Yelp
We went to Gray Duck Tavern for lunch on a quiet Thursday afternoon. The service was fantastic -- such a friendly server! The adult food was also great -- we split a steak sandwich and cheese curds. The kid food was painfully basic. It consisted of what appeared to be Kraft Mac and Cheese and a cup of Musselman's applesauce. It also came with milk and some oreos, but the general feel of the kid's meal is that it was all pre-packaged stuff. Of course, our kid enjoyed the meal, but for what it was, I'm not sure it was worth the price. Similarly, I'm not sure that the steak sandwich was worth the price. However, I would definitely get the cheese curds again. At the end of the day, you'll get great service, good food, and the price point is fine (not great, hence 4 stars).

Yelp
Food tasted good, but nothing extraordinary. There's something for everyone with such a large menu. Beer list was good. Service was good, waitress very nice and we stayed a little later than their close time and they were very accommodating. Wasn't busy on a Wed night. Atmosphere was calm and we had a good time chatting and eating appetizers. Overall a good experience just nothing spectacular but sometimes you just want a comforting place with a lot of options and this is that kind of place.

Yelp
First time here our meal was amazing and we've been looking forward to going back. Tonight was the night and it was very disappointing. Husband ordered a burger - no cheese and of course it came with cheese. Server who had to deal with it was very nice and took care of it. Our waitress never commented on the mix up. I ordered the Turkey Pot Pie which I have told people is THE BEST...not tonight. The flavor of the turkey was off, way too much gravy and what was supposed to be delightfully crisp and delicious pastry was half cooked at best- raw and gross. Good drinks and really good cheese curds but the main events were a serious let down. I commented on the pot pie and didn't get much of any response. Sad. Left hungry and probably won't go back. Bummer...still remember how good the first turkey pot pie was.

Yelp
Good food. Clean and nice interior. Middle price. Very good rib. Buffalo chicken can be better.

Yelp
Bartender ( Maddy I believe was her name) was AWESOME and they have a ton of beers on tap. I tried a local Minnesota creme ale and enjoyed my beverage. Unfortunately, food was sub-par. Salad was okay but came with Feta cheese without listing that on the menu and I'm not a Feta fan so that's not ideal. The beef nachos didn't seem super fresh since it seemed like the beef was a previously burger patty that was already cooked and cut up into nacho beef. They also used lots of that fake cheese sauce you get at the ballpark but it was lukewarm at best so it doesn't exactly do well when it cools off. Again bartender was awesome and I'd grab a beverage here but I'd recommend eating elsewhere.

Yelp
The restaurant is big and there was no wait when I came on a Wed. night. Food was ok, drinks could be better and desserts were good. Sour Heart $9 - I would not order this again and it gave me a headache by the end of dinner. Soup of the day $5 - Vegetable - This might have been made from all the leftover vegetables in the week, but it was done well and broth was flavorful and spicy. Philly Trio $15 - Ok mini sandwiches, bread was a little stale and overall lackluster. Fish & Chips $20 - 2 large pieces of fish, nice and cripsy, comes with good tasting fries. I tried all 3 desserts ($10/ea) - Ranking them in order of preference - Caramel waffle, chocolate cake and tiramisu. Conveniently located near Intercontinental Hotel. .|\---/| | o_o | .\_^_/..2023

Yelp
Casual Friday dinner. It was busy, and a lot was happening - in a high-energy but not chaotic way. We ordered and shared a few different items (salad, tacos, sliders) because it was our first time there, and we wanted to try a few different things. Everything was fine - nothing to write home out but nothing to complain about. The sliders and tacos had a good taste but were dry and lacked the "juiciness" you want when choosing restaurant-quality sliders or tacos. Would I go back? Yes, I want to try other food and drink items on the menu.

Yelp
It was take your son to lunch day and in order to split the travel difference, this was our choice. This was a 3.5 star experience for us. Unlike most other reviewers, our food was mediocre as was the service. The space is nicely done with several types of seating options. We chose a comfy booth and ordered several apps from the menu. The chicken fried bacon was a disaster. I love pork belly but these were deep fried fat kabobs with no meat on them at all. They were ultimately removed from the bill. The tots were freezer to fryer and overpriced at $12. The cheese curds were good but I didn't care for the honey bourbon sauce they were served with. The Philly and steak sliders were adequate but nothing to write home about. Kind of sad that the marbled blue was melted on top and not left sliced or crumbled. Service was proficient without being either welcoming or friendly. We were checked in on after food was delivered, and my son commented that it would have been nice if she even cared about our response. As mentioned the pork belly was removed without comment either about the dish or the removal. Not a place I am in a hurry to try again.

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner before a movie at the Science Museum of MN. It also happened to be the night of a Wild game. I highly recommend you call for reservations as most tables had a reservation' sign on them and open seating was nearly impossible to get. I chose the grilled turkey club sandwich and husband had the chicken rice soup and half Cobb salad. My sandwich was good, not great. Little too much bread but turkey and avocado were tasty. I chose the tater tot side upgrade and they were nice and crispy. I love kettle chips and am not the biggest fan of fries so when our server said the chips were basically ripple chips from a bad, I had to choose another side. I ordered the house cab and was a little surprised the price was higher than some of the other options I could have had from the menu. It's a very nice atmosphere, twinkling lights, low/high bar seating. Lots of energy in the place, especially full of Wild fans. Service was good.

Yelp
Convenient find on a trip to St. Paul and stay at the Intercontinental. You could literally see the hotel while sitting at the Gray Duck's bar. I dined at the bar twice on my visit to St. Paul. I had the Country Fried Bacon burger on the first visit and the mini steak trio the other. Both were good. Who knew you could country batter and fry bacon?! The mini steak trio was essentially like french dip sliders. Those were my fave! The bar is bright and has plenty of TVs as well.

Yelp
We had a group of 5 had reservations . The space is open and our table was by the kitchen everyone ordered something different and the menu gives lots of options

Yelp
Was visiting Minneapolis for work and we stopped by this place for lunch. Never thought one can make a cauliflower burger. I am a vegetarian but not a big fan of Cauliflower. Tried the Cauli Burger as this was recommended by the server. I was very impressed with this burger, it had a crunchy flavor, huge in size - can get a bit messy while eating. You can order side of fries or salad with the burger. I went with salad and no regrets. Will definitely visit this place again during my next work trip.

Yelp
Had a nice dinner here last night! Casual bar atmosphere right downtown. Tasty cocktails, a diverse, fully loaded supreme flatbread, and a messy but yummy pulled pork sandwich. Service was swift and no-nonsense. Slightly odd that the restrooms are outside the restaurant in the lobby of the office/apartment (?) building that Gray Duck is in... made weirder by the presence of two homeless guys chilling on the lobby couches while awaiting their pizza delivery.

Yelp
Great spot with good vibes! It was a perfect spot to grab a drink and a meal before heading to the Xcel energy center. All our food was delish, the place was busy and lively but service was great. Absolute gem.

Yelp
Food was okay nothing too crazy. I got the tavern pasta and it was a lot! Caesar salad was good also. Cheese curds yummy!

Yelp
Amazing service and food. We love bruschetta so we tried theirs even though we weren't starving. Amazing.but would probably leave off the mint if my choice. Monte Cristo was very food and she loved the SoCal burger. Their homemade onion rings were pretty tasty and very light.

Yelp
My biggest regret may be not getting a second order of lefse, but there's next time for that. It is served warm with a side of apple butter and salted truffle butter. Uff da! You betcha! The rest of the very Minnesota-Wisconsin inspired menu features a whole lotta elevated comfort food. This time, I had the tomato soup and house salad that consists of mixed greens, toasted pumpkin seeds, Door County cherries, and a creamy poppy seed vinaigrette. I would get both again, although my dinner companions also enjoyed their Swedish meatball plate and wild rice bowl. The Ole & Lena cocktail was also tasty, made with gin, black pepper, fig syrup, and an orange peel garnish. Service was prompt and friendly, and while the parking situation is not ideal, it was not overly difficult to find a spot on the street a block away.

Yelp
This place was quite nice with a modern feel, fast and friendly service and an interesting menu concept. Speaking of interesting menu concept, I had to order their tater tot hot dish because I was very intrigued to check out what their take is on what I make at home and pass for a tater tot casserole. I think it was the same concept except for the fact that they used some very tender short rib, fresh mushrooms and then topped the whole thing with some shaved parmesan for extra flavor. Honestly, I think the dish was good but it could have used a little bit more flavor as far as the mushroom sauce went. It tasted a bit on the bland side to me. My dining partner (aka my other half in other reviews), ordered their Swedish meatballs and gave me a taste. It was pretty good but again, I thought a little bit more flavor was required for them to be on the outstanding side. What I did love though was their chicken wings! We ordered some for our appetizer. They were crisp and flavorful and although I was unfamiliar with the hot sauce flavor, it was so good that it left me with nothing to complain about. Well... maybe just one teensy little thing. The fact that they gave us an odd number of chicken wings (5) gave me a bit of an unsatisfied feeling as you cannot split a wing and therefore, one person would have to eat an extra wing rendering the other to watch such a despicable scene. Okay, maybe that's a little too dramatic but... Other than that, it was great! Our waitress was very considerate. Before she took our drink orders, she asked to make sure we weren't on any time restraint. Once she found out we had all the time in the world to spend dining there, she allowed us to leisurely finish our dinner and even offered some dessert options. We were both too full and opted to skip the dessert. It's very unlike me as I generally try to eat everything but the kitchen sink while on vacation but... sometimes, you have to wave the white flag.

Yelp
Upscale bar food. We originally stopped in prior to a wild game. The food is upscale bar food with a gourmet twist. The service was fun and efficient. The wait staff intelligent and efficient.

Yelp
We won't be back. Phenomenal food is ruined by bad service. We came out tonight 6 women for dinner. We each ordered a glass of wine... first night free from our kids in a minute. It took over 20+ minutes to order dinner after we ASKED to order. All of us at this point have 0 drinks left on the table.... She quickly runs away. We try flagging her down for close to another 20 minutes for refills. Finally we do. After about 10 minutes she brings a bottle of water and never takes our refill for wine. More time goes by and we finally get our order for wine put. Our dinner comes and still, no wine. We asked her about it. She says she needs to just go get it but yet again she doesn't. Another 20 we ask that she just take it off our bill. One person put in a to go order that was lost & besides that she just dropped our bills and left. Leaving us a 7th of random crap we didn't order. Worst service we've had in months. Currently 10 minutes into waiting for our debit cards back. Maybe we will get charged..... well finally.... We won't be back.

Yelp
We ate at Gray Duck before Covid many times. The food was amazing! After reopening under new management, don't bother. Quality of the food is terrible.

Yelp
Time again for "boys night out" -the monthly adventure to try something new and just catch up. This time we decided to venture from the western suburbs over to the Saintly city to check out this hot-spot. Now, I do have one small issue-growing up in Wisconsin the childhood game is "Duck, Duck, GOOSE!" (I've only ever heard they 'gray duck' iteration in Minnesota). That aside, Gray Duck is a stylish upscale spot in a cool old (renovated) building in the heart of downtown. Their menu says they specialize in "comfort food from Minnesota and beyond" with things like blue plate meatloaf, Swedish meatballs and MN sweet corn bisque. What caught my eye were the appetizers from WI cheese curds, humpty ducky (deviled duck eggs), and Kingston jerk shrimp. As is our habit when my buddy and I get together, we decided to work our way through the menu a bit. They've got a bunch of theme cocktails too so I I started with the "duck old fashioned." (Unfortunately my excellent server Braiden informed me they were out of the "duck ice"-special-ordered iced etched with a duck at its base-have to see that next time.) anyway the OF was very good, not too boozy and with a nice orange flavor. For food we started by getting... -Venetian meatballs -tender beef balls with cheese on top - savory and delicious -Tamarind chili wings-spicy and sweet and extra crispy - I really liked these -sweet corn bisque-life changingly good! Worth the trip just for this explosion of flavor -heirloom tomato salad-like six different varieties of flavorful tomatoes (yum) and leathery mozzarella-the only disappointment of the night-would be much better at room temp-was clearly refrigerated -walleye fish and chips - pretty good, but we were pretty full by then. Overall a winner of a spot, and definitely worth the drive.

Yelp
An underwhelming experience for my visit to this establishment. I ordered a flat bread and it was barely cooked. The crust wasn't crust-like, it was more like room temperature white bread. First round of drinks came promptly. An order of an additional beer took 15-20 minutes. The beer was comped so we did appreciate the server acknowledging the delay. Potato chips that came as a side choice for a sandwich were flat. The special soup of the day (can't remember the name but it was a concoction of 10 different ingredients) received a thumbs up from our soup connoisseur. It took 20 minutes to receive our checks after we asked for them. Overall I wasn't too impressed and not likely to return anytime soon.

Yelp
Called ahead and were assured dietary restrictions wouldn't be a problem and told they had a button they could push to ensure the food was safe for a medical condition in our party. Then, when we were there, our server acted like it was too much trouble to check on items for us. The service was very poor. Food was mediocre. It also smelled strongly of cigarette smoke in the restaurant, possibly due to the line of smokers outside the doors of the building. We will not return.

Yelp
Oh my gosh the WALLEYE Fish n Chips are amazing!! Gorgeous downtown St Paul restaurant with big beautiful windows and great service. Clean!

Sandy G.

Yelp
This place was great. Nice menu, nice ambience and the prices were great! Situated between The Saint Paul Hotel and The Intercontinental on Wabasha. The gorilla had a cheeseburger he liked greatly whereas the hippo (me) had an open faced turkey sandwich. My turkey was a little overcooked but not inedible. The real mashed potatoes and roasted veggies were very good. Just the reasonable prices alone warrants eating here.

Yelp
Styled as a young, hip place, it ended up being a mediocre wannabe-hipster bar. When I asked about alcohol-free beverages, I got a look from the waitress as though I was from Mars. I was offered soft drinks, lemonade and soda water from the gun. The ginger beer with lime I settled was served in a pint glass full of ice with a straw. Bear with me, but when I'm not drinking I don't want to feel like I'm guzzling a children's drink. The food was likewise underwhelming. The jalapeño appetizer tasted mostly of grease. The burgers seemed to be pre-made patties with no great flavor. Maybe that's why there was half a jar of aioli as a topping? Good fries.

Yelp
Gray Duck Tavern has been on my Saint Paul hit list for a while. This place is so chic and fun. Aiden greeted me and coincidentally was also my server. I was craving the animal burger since pics from fellow yelpers left me salivating. After being seated at a high top table by the bar I asked Aiden what he suggested to compliment the animal burger since I was torn between the side of fries or the Mac and cheese. He recommended the Mac and cheese and I was so glad. Becca, who was a hostess said she also liked the Mac and cheese as a solid choice. To top it off, I needed a nice cocktail to tie it all together. I was going to get a red but then I expressed my desire to get something more tropical and Aiden knew exactly what to suggest once again. This time, he suggested the Latin inspired drink, "Et Tu Brute?" It was just devine. I must return soon...

Yelp
Casual dining with a great selection of Minnesota favorites. I had the pbj burger. Never heard of anything like it but it was delicious.

Yelp
I came here for a work lunch as I had heard Gary Duck reopened under new management. The menu has become considerably less healthy from what I could tell and prices were pretty high for a lunch menu compared to other restaurants in town. I got the steak salad, and the steak was very tough and one of my colleagues made a similar comment because she got the same thing. I have to say the most offensive thing was a comment the waitress made. I was celebrating a work event with several colleagues, and the ones who were able to make it are all successful women. When asked if it was all on one or separate checks and I said on one, the waitress made a comment about "angels," which I found deeply offensive. If I cannot come here with colleagues and have a professional environment, I won't be coming here.

Alexis N.

Yelp
Staff seemed short staffed HOWEVER our service did an amazing job. While not able to chit chat she was fast and helpful with our order. The food was good we got the fish and chips. Would love to try more of the food. A cute little tavern with a good vibe. Place to go if you are looking for American food and a good time
google avatar

Yelp
What a bummer. Service was good. Location good. And concept good. But the food was not even close to ok. Our table ordered steak sliders, chewy and flavorless. Mac and cheese, bland and terrible presentation with a random hunk of un seasoned meat on top. Pomegranate bruschetta, proportions of topping was way off, bread has no flavor and was soggy.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a chance to eat here today. We were looking for a place to dine before our concert at the Xcel Energy Center and I came across this place. Being a burger fan the "animal" caught my attention! We arrived around lunch time. We had no problem getting seated as the place was about a third full. Parking was available in the ramp across the street, 8 bucks for two hours! Convenient but something to remember to add to your dining experience. It is located about a block off the light rail, a much better parking option! The waitress was quick to take and serve our drink order. We elected to stick with water and soft drinks. Good thing after we saw the bill. Bring your wallet, you will need it! This place is a bit pricey for meal value! The food and service is excellent! But the $100 bill for a party of 4 that just order 4 sandwiches and 3 sides (because sandwiches do NOT include anything but the sandwich!) was hard to swallow! The milk bun was much denser than a regular one, good taste and reminded me of a pretzel bun without the fluff. The "animal" burger and the French dip both tasted great! I was a bit worried when I see the words special sauce, McDonalds fetish I guess! The "animal" had good flavor and was the first burger in a loooooong time that I have not added ketchup! The side of rosemary fries are perfect for two. Others ordered vegetables, which were more expensive than fries and only a single serving. The veggies were rated low by the others in our party. Fries were good and had a duck dip (Duck Fat Mayo) which was ok. The host said the place has been open for 6 months. The place was very nice and had lots of televisions for the sports nut. I wish I could get past the price...include a small order of fries (1/3 of what comes with the side order) with the price and this place will be much more affordable!

Yelp
The service is always friendly and quick, the space is beautiful, the drinks are good, and so is the food. The only reason for 4/5 is that the food isn't remarkable, maybe I haven't had their best dish but I don't currently have a reason I'm dying to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's get this straight right off the bat. I'm a duck duck goose person, but I didn't let this restaurant's name turn me away and neither should you. Went here for dinner with friends and had the charcuterie board and cheese curds for our app. Delicious. I ordered the Animal Burger and it was great. I'm a picky meat eater and this was the perfect salty, cheesy beefy mix. Other orders were turkey leg-tender and delicious as well as the tater tot hotdish. Our waiter was really nice and answered all of our questions. Only down side--I hate tall stools at a table. Fortunately, these weren't too uncomfortable.

Yelp
I'm not an In and Out fan, well...unless I'm drunk, but Gray Duck's version of the Animal Burger might be one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. I came for date night on a Friday at 6pm. It wasn't busy, but by 7pm the place was packed. I loved the modern open space, and I felt hip and chic in it. The drinks were insanely good. We tried peachy keen and seven pools, I'd come back just for the drinks. Liquid gold. I want a pitcher of peachy keen, and then a ride to the hospital. We tried a lot of food, so here it goes. Fried almonds and humpty ducky - Fine, but nothing I'd order again, you should pass. There's plenty of other interesting items on the menu. Cuban cigar - Huge let down. Filling was good, but man, the skin was soggy and thick, it was a limp stick. Yucky. Broccolini - Needed salt badly. Pass. Chili tamarind wings - Amazing. Full of flavor, crispy, and juicy. The sliced chili peppers added perfect heat. Animal burger - My first bite my eyes rolled around in my head with excitement and I made all sorts of moany food noises. You must order this. Gray Duck is a great addition to downtown St Paul. I can't wait to come back for a girls night out.

Yelp
I got a gift card to Gray Duck for my birthday, so I was excited to venture over to St. Paul and make a day of going to Gray Duck and the Science Museum to see the Pixar exhibit (side note: the Pixar exhibit was awesome). The restaurant was empty except for one table and one person at the bar, so we took a seat at the bar. The service was inattentive and just plain bad... our waters were never refilled, we were never asked if we wanted to order food or another drink, and once we did order food, the bartender forgot our fries. The food itself was only okay... the burger that everyone raves about was good, but the "special sauce" tasted like Thousand Island which isn't my favorite. I ordered a half turkey heirloom club, and it was average. I didn't like the heirloom tomato salad at all. I love caprese salads or variations on caprese salads, but this one just tried too hard. The olives, pistachios, and fried? basil were just too much. The fries and duck fat aioli were the highlight of the meal. I thought prices were a bit steep for most items - $8 for a half sandwich and $9 for the smallest size of the heirloom tomato salad. The price for the burger and side of fries was more reasonable because the portions were large. Overall, I'd say Gray Duck was a miss for me...

Yelp
Drinks were good, food was good. Service was ok. Waited for food a little longer than expected. We had a show to make so we ate and ran.

Yelp
The BEST cheese curds. And their pomegranate goat cheese bruschetta was so good! The burgers are fantastic!! Note the area around this restaurant is kinda sketchy so park close. But the food is fantastic! We went two days in a row.

Yelp
Sat at the bar and ordered the soft pretzel and turkey with wild rice soup... Both were excellent.... Definitely the best soft pretzel I've ever had and the soup had got to be one of the best I've had as well. Bartender was friendly and attentive. If I lived in the area, I would definitely frequent this place.

Yelp
A solid restaurant with a wide drink selection among other things in downtown Minnesota. Came here on a business trip and decided to get the pork with creamy kale. The food and service was excellent. They have a wide beer and liquor selection and it's all fairly priced. They have lots of big screen TVs showing various things. On one TV, they were showing Goodfellas. On another, they were showing Andrew Zimern eating some nasty crap in some random country. On others, they were showing various sporting events. They are known for their duck obviously, but they offer a wide selection of other proteins. Come here if you are in town!

Yelp
Got take out. Delicious food! The Turkey pot pie was amazing. Just fair warning parking isn't easy, go for the ramp across the street with hourly rates.

Yelp
Gray Duck is a great addition to the St Paul restaurant scene! The restaurant is spacious and airy, the staff is friendly and happy to serve you. The menu is not overwhelming, yet offers a variety of options to suit various moods and cravings. We were here for a very late lunch, just as the restaurant started to serve dinner. We went for some appetizers, burgers and fries. The Animal burgers were to die for - 2 juicy patties, caramelized onions, pickles and finger-licking delicious sauce, on a milk bun. It's wrapped in foil, so you don't get the delicious juices all over you. The rosemary fries were a pleasant surprise- the deep fried rosemary branch was delicious. My husband didn't even get to try it, I was not willing to share. Also, the portions are very large. We split a medium, and it was huge! We haven't finished it. The beer selection is great, my mixed Mescal cocktail was strong and flavorful, and we enjoyed the Food Channel playing on mute on a huge TV. All in all - if you are not making plans to visit Gray Duck yet - your loss!

Yelp
I went here before the wild game, and it's a perfect pregame spot. They're playing hockey on all the TVs, so they set the right vibe. There's a mix of high tops, booth and bar seating to accommodate your group and vibe. The menu is pretty expansive, but I got the jack burger and literally inhaled it. One bite, gone. I subbed tots, and the only thing missing was a signature house sauce. It's a couple blocks from Xcel, so convenient location too! Street parking.
