Every Portland Restaurant Opening of 2020 | Eater Portland

"The latest location for Portland-based Great Notion Brewing, housed in a roughly 2,000-square-foot space with an adjacent beer garden and 20 taps; I’d go for a New England IPA and the pulled pork barbecue." - Alex Frane

Award-Winning Portland Brewery Great Notion Will Open a New Location in Cedar Mill | Eater Portland

"Opening early next year in Cedar Mill, this Great Notion outpost will offer 20 taps, a small food menu, and beer for sale inside the Timberland Shopping Center; the 2,000-square-foot space will have garage doors that open onto a stone beer garden, and co-founder Paul Reiter said the team will be sampling beers out of a nearby tent before the brewpub opens." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

This tap house offers a great variety of beers, making it a paradise for beer lovers. 😍🍺However, the food selection is very limited, with only a few snacks as shown in the photos—far less than most other tap houses. It's not the best choice for those who want to enjoy a meal while drinking.😓

We had such a great experience at Great Notion Brewery in Portland! The beers were fantastic, but what really stood out was the service. Our bartender, Andrew, was awesome—super friendly and welcoming. The real highlight, though, came after we left. We accidentally left our backpack at the brewery and didn’t realize it until we were already an hour and a half away. When we called in a panic, Andrew went above and beyond and offered to ship it back to us. That kind of customer service is rare these days, and it really shows how much he cares about the people who come through the door. If you’re in Portland and want not only great beer but also genuinely great people behind the bar, this is the place to go. Huge thanks to Andrew for saving our day! He deserves a raise! Employee of the year! Best Bartender Award!

Google
Lovely taphouse with a very chill vibe. Good views and good brews. They have a great selection of unique beers, ciders, and sours, and even some unorthodox options like smoothie beers.

Google
Great Notion is an incredible brewery that was originally a small space in NE Portland. I’m at their second location which is in Beaverton.Had Stamper Stout, Over Ripe Hazy IPA and Double Stack Imperial Coffee Maple Stout. Intensely delicious beers!

Google
Fresh and warm pretzels 🥨 this was attested by my European colleagues who hails from France Poland and Germany. I always loved their beer but this time tried their appetizers and it was pretty good. No questions about their beer standards. They know what they are brewing. I loved all of their beer and sour ones are especially one of the best in PNW. Try their papaya sour and you would love it if your taste buds call for sour beer Nice indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy with friends and workmates 🍻 cheers

Google
Great place! We only came by for drinks after dinner so I can't say anything about their menu. Drinks were ice cold, loved it! Had their Mango Coconut Mochi Sour Smoothie and my gawd, it was delicious. Tasted like juice! Love the art work displayed everywhere (even their sticker wall in the bathroom). Speaking of bathrooms, they have complimentary tampons and pads. I was impressed with that 😀. Service was great and loved their glasses, maybe I'll buy one next time! Husband and I each left with a t-shirt to add to our brewery merch collection. Ambiance was nice, low lit, natural lighting from their big windows with indoor/outdoor seating.

Google
First off, beers get a 5/5 but this location seems to have stopped serving food. Which was very disappointing to discover after sitting down for dinner. Been here lots in the past and have always enjoyed the unique food offerings and coming for dinner. Now it's a great place to come to have a beer or maybe even just come pick up some beer but do not come with an empty stomach! Which, again, is disappointing because I enjoyed staying awhile previously and having food and their wonderful beers. Will most likely only return to this location if I want to pick up beer otherwise I will go to their Alberta location from now on.

Derek

Google
Good beer, but disappointed that happy hour doesn't include any of their tart beers apparently. My wife and I ordered 2 beers each from 3pm-4:30pm, all different kinds, so I guess a third of their menu doesn't qualify for happy hour. Feels like a bait and switch. I'll be going to von ebert and the Market of choice tasting area moving forward.

Yelp
yooooo their roasted/toasted corn is really good haha i've been a fan of this place since it opened up, since its nearby. the great thing about it is that they do experimental beers that are super unique (& tasty) they allow outside food and often have rotating pop up food truck events that park outside on certain days one of my dogs is pictured at the counter! look for hugo the corgi

Yelp
Went here after dinner for a quick drink. It was literally like 10 mins till last call so I landed on a flight. I honestly don't remember what I ordered but it's in the screenshot so just zoom in and you'll see it. If you can't, it's beer beer beer beer and beer. The beers are on the fruity side, so try some new ones if you're a boring beer drinking like me. Cool bartender who let us snag some samples before picking the final lineup.

Yelp
I had no idea this was even in Beaverton! Someone posted a pic of a can in the scooter group because Great Notion has a seltzer with a scooter on it!!! Bubs Blueberry and Lemon Seltzer!! So cute. I'm new to the sour ale world. I was strictly a cider girl for a longtime until I saw a sour ale I wanted to try--and loved it! So, we decided to come the ales here. Plus, I wanted a Bubs. We got a flight of a bunch of fruity ales. And loved nearly all of them. I am officially an ale girl now too. And Bubs was really good too. I might be biased because of the cute can, but hey, it was still tasty. Nice place too.

Yelp
Bartender was rude! I was pretty excited about this place after reading the reviews. However, when I got there, I was informed they no longer had a kitchen. I then said, oh just a food truck outside and he said "I wouldn't say just". The taco shop out front really is amazing but I didn't care for his comment. The beers were not great either. I'm from Bend and they definitely can't hang. We got a flight and I couldn't find one I liked. They also need some schooling on marketing. Driving by it looks like it could be an ax throwing establishment.

Yelp
Great Notion is one of the best spots we hit in Portland! The beers were fantastic, but what really stood out was the service. Our bartender, Andrew, was super friendly and helpful. We accidentally left our backpack behind and didn't notice until we were an hour and a half away. When we called, Andrew immediately offered to ship it back to us. Above and beyond service! If you want great beer and even better people, this is the place.

Yelp
Great beers, even better service. Thank you ANTHONY for all the recommendations and curating a flight based on taste preference. Get the seltzer smoothie chocolate banana vanilla seltzer is insane. Also, rancho viejo taqueria food truck outside is fuego

Yelp
This is definitely a place for sour and IPA lovers. Great Notion has some of the best sours and IPAs! I am not a big IPA fan but 'Northleft' is a beer I would drink regularly. I did enjoy one of the few lagers they had, 'Children of the Corn'. The 'Blueberry Muffin' sour was my absolute favorite and wish I got a pack to take home. I was told to try the pretzel and was NOT disappointed but the cheese spread was an acquired taste. The service is quick and seamless with QR codes at each table, which makes ordering at the bar a fast method as well. It is very clean and also dog friendly. They have a cute little Big Foot/Axe Man theme going on with inside and outside seating.

Yelp
This is my second time here. I'm visiting from California and remember this place as a good beer and food joint. I needed more than pub fare and this place delivers.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
My husband and I had a fruited sour at a brew pub near our house and thought, huh! These are quite good! I need to try more of these! After having another at a different brew pub, we decided to go to the actual Great Notion in Beaverton. We got a flight of all of fruited sours on tap and wow! I never considered sours as I've found them too, well, sour. As it turns out, I just needed to try fruited sours. They are more like a boozy pressed juice and super flavorful. The manager was super kind and helpful in describing each of the sours. It's very laid back so if you're looking to chill.. this is a great place. Plus, I love the logo as it looks like my hubby Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
Visit d this place for a quick lunch and it's a worth trying. Friendly staff, cool ambience , cleaner place. Food is limited menu but good portion, regular sandwich itself makes you full. Really liked their combination of ingredients in the sandwich and great collection of beer too
google avatar

Jin P.

Yelp
Beer is always yummy here. We got the GR-75 and the Bicycle Day today and both were full bodied, slightly tart, delicious sours. We also got the Italian .. which was just okay. I think we've been spoiled by the Godmother in LA Service is always friendly here though, and the big plus for us is that it's family friendly and baby/stroller friendly. Lots of high chairs and booster seats too. Side note, we miss the hot food options!! Regardless, thanks always for the delicious and rotating selections
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
I enjoy a beer or 10, craft beer, tap houses and beer. Great Notion is top on my list when up in Oregon and I can find it in select locations in California. This is a small little tap house with a pretty tasty bar food menu. The food really looks good but I just had a beer...or 10. My personal favorite was the WC IPA. They have a large hazy selection, sours and a rotating tap menu of course. I grabbed a HUGE DELUGE Imperial IPA 4pak for the road. Love your labels. They're the best!
google avatar

Kiley Corrina V.

Yelp
Food is delicious, always has been. I got their salted pretzel with the spicy cheese. Always hot and fresh when we get it! Thought you order from your app (or go to the bar) once you have ordered something it always comes out quickly and the staff is always nice when doing so. The inside is lovely, the bathroom is my favorite (weird I know, but don't judge me till you go). I sat out on their deck so I could have my dog with me. They're a very welcoming and friendly place to go!

Yelp
Great Notion Brewing has really good beers! Came in two days in a row during my Oregon visit because it was close by my Airbnb and of course they have really good beers. The first day I got a flight, I'd say 4 of 5 were good, including the darkest beer, which I'm not normally a fan of. All beers are crisp and refreshing. I'm not a sour beer person but their sours are on point! Especially the mango one. Service was fairly good. Of all the workers, it was the gal that stood out the most. She was friendly, energetic, and really helpful. When my drink was running low she always checked to see if I needed anything else. Bathrooms are gender neutral and they were stocked up with feminine products, which is always a plus to see when I go out.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was great (although they ran out of risotto) the ribs fell off the bone and the sauce was perfect. The fish and chip were up to British standards as were the chips. The beef pot pies crust looked amazing and inside it was stuffed with beef and vegetables. Lastly the Alfredo was plentiful and cooked just the right amount of time. The service was great and the place was packed inside and out. Clean and safe. Will be back
google avatar

Prag R.

Yelp
Not a beer fan, but the flight tasters of sweet and fruity was worth it. I definitely couldn't finish all of them by myself, but go for it if you want the real experience as you get to choose which drinks you want and can make that into a flight. Food options were good too, we picked Nachos and they were so good.

Yelp
Usually when visiting Portland we hit up the OG spot, but my last trip up we decided to check out this new Beaverton location. Located in a poppin shopping center, parking was pretty tight. Came on a Friday afternoon and had to go down a couple aisles before snagging a spot. Once inside those great notion vibes shined through in every aspect of the space. From the werewolf on the wall to the bathroom completely covered in different beer can sleeves, there was no second guessing where you were. Now onto the star of the show, the beer flights. Went with a flight of 3 sours and 2 hazys, unfortunately they didn't (maybe no longer?) have my all time favorite the orange creamsicle, but was still impressed with most of the beers. The only one I wasn't really a fan of was the "easy like Sunday morning" sour, but aside from that was happy with all my other selections. They allowed you to order directly at the bar or by scanning the QR code on your table. We opted for bar ordering so we could see the descriptions on the menu in full instead of having to hit the back tab every time we wanted to read about a beer. Service was great, and everyone working was super chill. Was bummed that they didn't do crowlers here or have any of the beers I wanted available in four-packs. So sadly the great notion experience for this trip ended....until I found some more at a tap room the next day!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Drove up from the suburbs to pick up my buddy a four pack for his birthday. Decided to enjoy a pint. Staff was really friendly, service was really fast and location had a cool vibe. I didn't order any food because I had just eaten but the stuff I saw come out of the kitchen looked pretty amazing, especially the Italian sandwich.

Yelp
This place is like a second home for me. Since the pandemic, this location is what has kept my beer-loving soul thriving. Chad (who has flown to bigger things), Drew, Kanoe, Cliff, and now Jared are MY KIND OF PEOPLE. love them and love it here. (I do miss the food though!!)

Yelp
We were hiking in the area and decided to stop here for a post-hike beer. Bright & open space with a good amount of seating inside and a medium-sized patio outside. They planned the interior & patio wisely to take advantage of being located on a corner, so once you're inside you forget it's in a shopping center. The staff was friendly and the Hubs and I shared a flight (currently five, 5-oz pours for $19). They have a large taplist, but nearly half were IPAs, and the other half was mostly fruited sours, with a couple lager/biers and a couple imperial stouts. We were hoping for a bit more variety and disappointed the only two dark beers they had were imperial (we both love dark beers, but tend to steer away from imperials due to the high ABV). Luckily I love sours & the Hubs likes lager, so we opted to share a flight with 2 sours (the key lime one with a hint of coconut is FANTASTIC), 2 lager/biers, and 1 imperial stout. They have a small food menu, but we didn't eat here so I can't speak to the quality of the food.
google avatar

Billy F.

Yelp
Great Notion has great beer and a great patio. Food is standard pub and clearly secondary to beer. Very friendly staff.
google avatar

Yasuyo T.

Yelp
My sister shipped a box of beers for my wedding anniversary gift from Great Notion. I can't wait to drink their sour beer. They do a really good packing.
google avatar

Fermin C.

Yelp
Came in visiting from LA on a slow Thursday afternoon with party of 14 & Loved the service, the food and the drinks. They have some TVs to watch sports at the Bar area which I thought was cool. Took some cans, glassware and stickers to go. We ordered some light eats since we had a heavy breakfast and we were satisfied a couple drinks each. If we're in town again def will be coming back. If you're reading this and are in town, Great Notion is a must.

Sam P.

Yelp
This bar's the real deal. Jared always takes care of you, and Cliff's been a legend behind the bar. Best bar in the area and it's not close.
google avatar

Adam G.

Yelp
Quick service, fun food, and good beer. What's not to love? Informal setting. No pressure to move on or rush. Using Toast Tab ordering on the phone led to us trying out new things and ordering more than we would have with traditional ordering. Wife really enjoyed her watermelon salad, daughter loved the biscuit and jam. I had the chicken and biscuit sandwich which was quite filling. Was easily able to feed a child with seed and nut allergies.
google avatar

Jesy B.

Yelp
Great Notions is probably my favorite brewery in PDX at this point. At this point I don't drink beer as much as I used to but if I will break that rule if we're by this location. The beers are always super creative and delicious. I normally stick to IPAs but some of their sours are fantastic. The blueberry muffin TASTES like a blueberry muffin and the strawberry cheesecake tastes as described. My only beef is that the non-core beers don't stick around long enough! There was a strawberry mochi milkshake one that I still long for. Service is simple and polite. Nice to sit outside when the weather is nice.

Rodrigo V.

Yelp
Some of the best beers I've ever had, but unfortunately the experience was completely overshadowed by the extremely rude and discriminatory service. The bartender became visibly upset when we spoke Spanish and wrongly assumed that my son--who is of legal drinking age--was underage and wasn't drinking. Rather than asking for ID, he chose to confront us with hostility and make unfair assumptions. When we decided to leave to avoid further conflict, he escalated the situation by following us outside, spitting at us, and yelling that our "Mexican cuisine sucks." This kind of racist and aggressive behavior is unacceptable and left us deeply disturb - 05/11/2025
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Their beers are delish and the vibes are good but I miss when they had a fuller food menu. They only have sandwiches now and it stops me from coming back a lot more frequently than I used to.
google avatar

Sirena L.

Yelp
Wow. Great Notion has great beer. I have not tried the food, but the selection and quality of beer is amazing. The sours are the best! Blueberry Muffin on tap is just fantastic, and I loved the Mellifluous (smoothie style sour). Friends who had not previously cared for sours have converted thanks to Great Notion. They also have great IPAs and strong stouts. I loved the easy online ordering process at the table - you just go on your phone, scan the QR code, enter a name, and it takes you to the menu which has all the prices and options laid out for you, and you can basically just keep adding to your order. Why don't more places do this?!
google avatar

Veronica F.

Yelp
Been wanting to give this place a try, mostly because I love the logo, pretty cool. Came to hang out with family, I had a cider and sour flight and the chilli. Chilli was aight, could use a little more flavor. But I will come back again mostly for the beers.
google avatar

Robyn B.

Yelp
We stumbled onto Great Notion looking for lunch after touring Pittock Mansion and we'll definitely be back. They have recently expanded their menu (this was told to me by the counter person when I complimented their salads) and the new options are great. I tried two different half-size meal salads and both were really good! Like, I'm still thinking about them two weeks later good. The roasted roots salad had dukkah seasoning and a delicious vinaigrette, and the chicory salad was sweet and savory with all kinds of textures, very fun to eat. Hubby had the ham & cheese sandwich and enjoyed it. He also had their beer special, the house lager for only $2/pint, and thought it was good. Atmosphere was fine, music a little loud and bathrooms too dark but overall okay. Will definitely be back for the food, I'm a major salad snob and I was impressed!
google avatar

Shauna F.

Yelp
I stopped drinking beer 10 years ago and this place just made me start again. I love the fruity beers here. Got a flight to try a few and loved all of them. My salad was really good too. And super nice and quick service. Liked it so much I suggested it to a friend who wants to do happy hour today... So I'm going for the second day in a row.
google avatar

Monica D.

Yelp
They have done a great job during COVID with the process to pick up delicious beers. Glad they opened a place on the west side. Excited to try the BBQ(have not yet), but was able to snag a bottle of hot sauce and it did not disappoint.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
What can I say other than this is my absolute favorite brewery ever. There's nothing bad in their rotation. I love sours and I love hazy IPAs. It's always so hard for me to choose my flights because I want to drink everything. They have a QR code on the table for you to order and close your tab. Beaverton location is far less crowded than the Alberta location. I like that this location has more of a bar vibe. They also have TVs so you can watch sports games.
google avatar

Carl N.

Yelp
Down in Oregon visiting son #1 (in order of birth ). Stopped in for lunch without knowing really want to expect, but we like to try micro breweries so there ya have it. Their beer selection was great, several IPAs to choose from. I ordered the Beetlejuice (hazy) IPA and the Chicken Apple Brie Sandwich which was a special. Both very nice! I ordered a 2nd Beetlejuice just to be sure and would have ordered another sandwich, but the first one did the trick! And really, I had to prioritize If you come across Great Notion, I recommend!!!
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
One the most unique brewery in Portland! First experience with Great Notion was at their east side location, funky vibe, great beer and solid food. Now onto the Beaverton location, since they opened around the start of covid, I've chose to just do pick ups, until today. First of all, they check for vaccine status to sit inside, which I appreciate very much. The people working there are friendly and happy to tell you more about each beer, since I couldn't decide on just one, I went for the sample flight. This probably goes without saying, but beer on tap beats cans, so the beer tasted better than usual. They do have some food options, not as many as the east side location, but I'll be back to try them.
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
Let me say i'm a huge fan of Great Notion and I go back and forth between this one and the NW 28th. I mostly stick with IPAS (of which GN has an abundance), but they have made a sour-liker out of me. Generally I go every other months or so, have a flight, and then stock up for home. In particular, I'm a big fan of Citra hops, so the Invader series is my favorite by far. As far as this location, it's pretty easy breezy when it comes to service and ordering. There's a QR code you scan at your table to order, and then someone brings it to you. Got me thinking- why aren't more places like this? No menus to touch, and no need to stress your server out asking for things again and again. I've often sat outside or near the front, and let me tell you the amount of anti- maskers who show up here is beyond annoying. The staff does a pretty good job of keeping it friendly and checking status, but really hats off to them for dealing with these edgelords. Yeah, the menu is pretty limited, but I'm not expecting cheesecake factory caliber when I come to a small batch brewery. They have chips, and sandwiches people!
google avatar

Maddy R.

Yelp
I always recommend Great Notion to people in my workplace! The Cedar Mill location has been especially great, saving me about 15-20 minutes versus driving to their Portland location. Each beer is not only interesting and different, but actually tasty. This I find is rare with the current sour and fruit IPA craze. I have never been let down by customer service either. Our server tonight, Nick, was attentive and assisted in mine and my friend's indecisive tendencies choosing our flight. I never expect over-the-top service, but a shoutout to friendly, present, and hard workers is always due.
google avatar

Jeannie D.

Yelp
Small place, in a strip mall. Lucked out for a parking spot. Not much in the way of food, we had planned on eating here but frito nachos didn't really sound appetizing. They have a few other options for the gluten free pescatarian, just nothing that sounded good. Clean place, nice employees. I personally wouldn't come back here for anything other than a beverage.

Yelp
Guess what I did last night? Paid $18 for a 4-pack. Guess what I won't be doing again? Stepping foot in any Great Notion location. To Great Notion: people want VALUE; they don't want to feel like they are being fleeced. Value keeps them coming back. Value builds loyalty. Taking every red cent you can from customers doesn't make them leave happy. My wife and son and I are always looking for places to eat in the area because our son plays tennis twice a week nearby, and we always grab dinner after; so last night, I thought "Let's take a look at the menu at Great Notion (for the future), and I'll grab a six-pack (or four-pack) to go in the meantime." It was late and we needed to get home so I begrudgingly paid the $18 for the four-pack, but I left saying to myself "Well, at least I know we can cross this place off our list." Great Notion: we're just one family, but you lost the opportunity to earn our business because you felt the need to charge stratospheric prices for a 4-pack of beer. There's not even a retailer in the middle, for crying out loud! You traded a potential new customer who always dines in the area for $18. That doesn't seem like a smart decision. Again, people want value. Then they come back.
google avatar

Kristi N.

Yelp
Great beer and great service. We got a flight of the sours and IPAs and liked most of them.
google avatar

Vincent O.

Yelp
What an incredible brewery. It's hard to find a brewery with amazing beer and amazing staff . It's sad that they don't have anything like this in Las Vegas . 100% will come back . I highly recommend you try their sour beer. If you're not into beer you'll love them and if you are a big beer drinking you'll think they are top 5 on your list .
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Would be rated higher if there was more food options, if they sold single cans and if their hours were longer. Great Sours!
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
Very easy online ordering process. Service was prompt getting drinks and food. Servers were all pleasant. About ten tables outside and open garage style doors to bring the outside in. The three beers I had were tasty. Ordered the steak sandwich, steak was thin sliced, not chopped. Whole size is enough for two, my husband and I spilt. Served with pickles and a bag of chips.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
Amazing beers and amazing food. Nachos are to die for! Wouldn't expect anything else from a great brewing company! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Annie H.

Yelp
Great notion is my go-to brewery. I love the wide selection of beers they have available. With the city being open, I haven't had to wait to seat myself the past couple of times I've been. Love being able to order on my phone and service is quick. The artwork on the bottles are insane. They're definitely unique and so fun to look at. As for the beer, the description of the beers sound so appealing and delicious. I always end up getting a flight because I can't ever just choose one. This brewery is the first one that made me like sour beers. Sometimes the descriptions sound amazing and most of the time they are, but some can definitely be misses. However, overall the beer is outstanding.

Jo S.

Yelp
Stopped in last night for drinks and snacks and really enjoyed this place. I tried a nice white wine and my friends tried a flight and other beers which they enjoyed. Also we ordered pretzels and nachos which were both tasty. Atmosphere was welcoming and casual there's both inside and outside seating. Would definitely come back again.
google avatar

Morissa P.

Yelp
Typical Portland style brewery. Plenty of suds on tap and some nice munchies. Happy hour makes this super reasonable even by non Portland standards. My only removal of a star is I wish they had a few more lite munchies to offer. The frito nachos are, however, surprisingly really tasty.
google avatar

Kourtney E.

Yelp
Just really interesting and good beer all around. If you're into fruity/tropical hazy IPAs, heavy stouts, and extremely flavorful sours, this is the place for you. Cool little taproom. Excited to try out their main brewery.
