The Great Plains Black American history museum in Omaha is opened to the public. was enamored by all the unique historical collections on African Americans. I did not realize that Malcom X was a Nebraska native until I visited this Museum which is located in the heart of Omaha Nebraska black community. I was really impressed with all the interesting and fascinating collections it contains in such a small space. It was a pleasure to talk to the community owner and director. He’s a very knowledgeable, down to earth, and personable man. The are a plethora of other black businesses in the surrounding area of this museum. If you are ever in Omaha, I highly recommend paying your local African American museum a visit. It was worth the commute from the opposite side of Omaha near Offutt AFB. The area is well maintained and I felt safe. My training instructors discouraged students from going this part of town, but knew that it was possibly due to preconceived notions and assumptions about the actual community and its inhabitants. I had already convinced myself that I was going to that side of town because I wanted to check out the Black American museum and I am super glad that I went. I was able to meat some of the people and support local black businesses in that area. I was also able to enjoy a few of the entertainment venues frequented by blacks in that area. The people were friendly and hospitable. I had no regrets nor disappointments about visiting that area. The museum director assured me that the area was deemed safe. At the end of the day, I always exercise my common sense, street smarts, sound judgment, and discernment to decipher whether an environment, situation or person is safe enough for my presence. It was truly a pleasure to see the museum’s collection and learn what I didn’t know about Nebraska’s history. Don’t miss out. Don’t pass this place up. Don’t take places like this for granted. Always support black American museums. There’s a lot of dedication, time, resources, funding, and hard work that goes into maintaining, preserving, updating, adding, and modernizing the facility that holds the museum’s historical collections on Black American Heritage and culture. If you are ever in the city of Omaha, NE....this place is a must see on your visit. The history and information you have access to is priceless. The executive director provided our group with a personal tour and shared his passion for our history with us. I was very impressed with his vision and knowledge of our history. His brother was recently elected the first black mayor of Omaha in the history of the state. Awesome!!!

I was extremely impressed with my visit to the Great Plains Black History Museum. Eric Ewing was the host of the tour and was very knowledgeable about the history of African Americans associated in the Great Plains area. Furthermore, I learned about African American history that was never told to me in my 52+ years. Moreover, Eric kept me engaged the whole duration of the tour. I promise you will not be disappointed.

We had a really great experience here. It was informative and loved the different exhibits. Learned things about local history I had never been taught and should have been. We plan on returning and bringing along more people. Everyone should check this out !

I had the wonderful opportunity of exploring the Great Plains Black History Museum during a short trip to Omaha. I am so thankful I made time to see it. The gracious owner/curator was knowledgeable and engaging, and he took the time to share insights about the various items and exhibits found within the museum. I appreciated his ability to tie events and details about Omaha to historical events across the United States and even to my lived experiences. This museum is an important fixture in the community, be sure to check it out!

We have been there to get stamps on our nebraska passport program. I can say this place was the most impressive one for me. Shout out to the retired navy man who gave us a one hour private tour for the place! He is a very enthusiastic person for what he is doing. It was the most informative stop on the passport program so far. Just make sure you book online(it is free).

The Great Plains Black History Museum was Nebraska Passport stop number 55 for us in 2024. We were very warmly greeted by the young man minding the museum that day who was very patient with us answering our questions and telling us about the new museum being built. It was cool to see the Heisman Trophy there on loan to the museum by Johnny "The Jet" Rodgers. You should check it out and when you take your selfie with it, be sure to strike your Heisman pose!

Yelp
Black History is American History; and this museum can teach us a lot. It's not a very big place, but there is so much to look at and the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I understand that there are plans for a larger building in the future. Admission is free, donations are accepted. I highly recommend going to learn about local and national history.

Yelp
This is a museum that everyone who lives in Omaha should visit at least once. It's critical that we know and understand the history of our city and why things are the way they are now. There is so much to be learned, and this is the perfect place to do so. There are many different displays that are changed out in intervals. I was fascinated by Eric's immense knowledge on Black history and how passionate he is about his work. This is a beautiful museum that I look forward to visiting again.
